I got one this weekend, and it’s spectacular. Yeah it’s pricey, but when you see the detail, the engravings, the movement, it all comes together. It feels and looks great on the wrist. Don’t buy it for investment, buy it cause you love it, you are collector, or you want a speedy +. It’s a little more something than a regular speedy. As you said Andy, it’s technically and aesthetically perfect.
Of course this is a cool piece. Although some have said it’s probably over priced, but you do get what you pay for. The dial alone is worth the premium. Whoever gets one is lucky.
Totally agree. Of all the things Omega should be doing, releasing this model is not one of them. Makes you wonder what mess they will make of the next generation of Seamaster and PO
The only reason I would ever buy an Omega is because of that Rocket , it makes hugeeeeeeeee difference in some ppls life like me , absolutely stunning and role reason I would buy this and only this compare to even rolex for that price
I as a Watch collector do mnot care at all what other people thinks about watch sizes, dials, brands. stiles, etc, as long I am not getting it with a strap, any strap. And I weal four watches from my collection- An Invicta divers with cal. 2824-2 and is a 45mm dia, 52 mmm lug to lug, and Ocean7 LM-8 Diver's chronometer with a 57mm dia case and 54mm lug to lug, a Seiko with a Mecaquartz Chrono movement, and an Omega Speedmaster Chrono with Master Co-Axial movement, and has a 39mm diameter. So my collection have to be with divers and Chronographs that I like.... And I don't like that Speedy at all, dial is too cluttered. Otherwise, very nice and thoughtful review.
What collectors should consider is for how long the MKI was produced (2019-2024) to the MKII (2024) as far as I know. Please correct me if I’m wrong. I got both for a halfway reasonable price, and the reason was because the MKI is a classic and the MKII because of the SaturnV rocket, the finer details and the different caliber. I love them both. Yes, I also have a Daytona, but my “daily” is a Seamaster Diver300 with a little Gold on it. It doesn’t look like much, it’s sturdy and reliable. Thanks for this interesting review!
Looking forward to your 1 Month video on the PO. I have one but have never worn it more than a few days. I'll be interested in its accuracy over that time span. Mine is very precise. I read an earlier comment about Omega bracelets and don't get the hate. I'm wearing a 1998 50th anniversary Seamaster GMT on a Speedmaster bracelet. 10-12 years ahead of Rolex of the period. My PO has an excellent bracelet with easy adjustment. I also pwn 2 modern Rolex, a Batgirl (hate that name) and a Yacht-Master 40. Those bracelets are no better than their contemporary Omega bracelets. But I do hate hate the Bond Seamaster bracelet....
Andy, I tried this on yesterday, side to side with the ‘Mk1’, both of which were available in a London Boutique.. the new ones etching is noticeably improved but the Saturn V? -meh. I’m a NASA nut and love the Moon-watch Apollo heritage, but as nice as the new one is, I think the ‘8’ stood well enough on its own with a decorated 1861 …it’s now in Ed White 321 territory price wise, so I don’t think adding a current movement and tooling improvements justify a £3.5k hike. Now that ‘special editions’ have replaced ‘limited editions’ enabling omega to sell thousands over time (like the FOiS), I think we could see more of this sort of thing to keep things ‘fresh’. After all they need to sell watches, but if had already bought an Apollo 8 I’d be pretty miffed now! What’s next?.. a Silver Snoopy mk2 once the markets been satisfied and they’re in AD’s windows?😉probably not, but no one thought they’d update this one ! At least a good old limited edition couldn’t be messed with.
Well over £10K… Yup, £13.5K! That’s £300 more than a Daytona & also a wait list piece. Preferred the older ref to this one. And prefer the Daytona to both the latest & previous ref of this. Just a bit too busy, tacky & big. Do like the grey side of moon, though.
@@ALL-il1swRolex introduced their own proprietary ceramic material in 2005 I think & have ceramic bezel inserts across a lot of the models. Laser ablation… to make a moon surface effect? What, did Omega go to the moon… they really should make more of that fact! 😂 Yawn. Omega have dined off it for years. It’s boring & tiresome & the dial is too busy for it. Ps. Yeah, I know the moon thing bothers you, Omega should do something cool like lie about summiting some mountain. Because unfortunately as popular as they are, Rolex is not capable of making a watch like this. Which I tend to think is why Omega is hated on so much
Great video Andy! And I agree in that it’s a strange release.. imo the updates to the watch aren’t ones that people will notice and justify the price increase with. White dial professional would have been a much better release!
The overall consensus is that the price for this is too high. Although I would have preferred something closer in price to the mark 1 I do believe it was underpriced originally. Considering that the old price is the same as the current no date sub with the level of finishing and technology. 14k for this level movement and ceramic is pretty par for the course given the price of similar feature Zenith defy. I hope to see some new iterations of the other (side of the moon collection) as they are getting a bit long in the tooth.
Current Mk.1 price is £10100, up from about £8700 12-18 months ago. £13.5k for this new one, rocket hand and all is just ridiculous. It’s somewhat of a niche model, without the mass appeal of the classic Moonwatch. Reviews have also noted it’s difficult to tell the time during daylight hours too, due to the hands disappearing against the dial. A Mk.1 from the grey market is the way to go if you must have one.
I was able to check it out at the boutique and it’s a really nice piece, but my rep and I agree it’s not worth the premium. The little rocket is cool, but unless you carry a loupe, you can’t really tell when looking at the watch normally.
Andy, Thank you for the timely video. I like your thought process. Yesterday I tried on the Apollo 8, Mk 2. It’s a nice watch, with a lot of detail. I like the yellow and black. $14,300 before tax in the US. Question: Would you take an IWC 46mm Big Pilot over this watch? The IWC is $1,000 less, but not a factor. Which watch pops the most in a crowd, in your opinion. I’m old, so appreciation isn’t a factor for me. Thanks.
Yikes. I wouldn’t buy the MK2 on principle tbh. Save a few quid and buy the Mk1 that’s still available. Not sure how big your wrist is, but the BP is a cool watch and wearable for most, although not as a daily for those of small wrist. For the money, and not knowing what else you have, have a look at the IWC Pilot 41 in ceratanium or the JLC Polaris date. I’d also have a look at the Speedmaster Moonphase. These are worth a look and wear incredibly well.
The Omega's is much better, in my opinion, regarding to its special and unique design. The IWC'S looks like so many watches you can find for 100 bucks and nothing special on the design
Thanks for the video! If the Apollo 8 was on a bracelet, it would be one of my favourites, however, it’s not and it’s too bad. I still think a preowned Omega Speedy 3861 Sapphire Sandwich is one of the best values in the market.
The minute and hour marker hands are too dark blend in to the dial, manual winding and the yellow are the things that made me sell mine. Would have been a perfect watch if they changed those 3 things then new rocket added looks pretty damn cool.
Has anyone considered why Omega updated this watch? Maybe customers of the original (or potential customers) were put off due to it not being Metas verified? And now they have and upgraded a few other things, they are getting critised for it? The only criticism i have is the strap (should be a nice luxury item) and the fact the lume is a lot less than the original
Think it’s a bit shameful for a brand like Omega to propose such an anonymous wooden case for this new version - particularly with such price increase. Never really understood the red decorations of original version’s case seen the yellow details of the watch itself but at least was a commemorative choice for a commemorative version rather than such a generic wooden case which has been there for years on all sorts of different models.
