I never thought I'd love anyone more than Tureck for these concerti, but Nikolayeva, oh my God! This is what Bach wanted us to hear. It's like she lives inside the music.

Tatiana Nikolayeva was one of the brightest stars of XXth century piano music. Her playing is straightforward, effective, emotional but not sentimental, warm, not romantic. She was a model of what a music interpreter should be. Modest, respectful, generous, grateful. Overall, a link between a composer and us, the people. Tatiana was a classmate of Sviatoslav at the Moscow Conservatory...both obtained the gold medal. She always loved Bach. It is told that at a competition she was asked to select one of the preludes and fugues of WTK and she retorted that the jury selected one, she was comfortable with any. She was a figure beloved in Russia, by other musicians, by children, by the people. Her playing is her legacy.
I didn't know this excellent artist and I'm entirely agreeding to your opinion: her performances are sensitive, sober and generous. 👏🏻

The thing about Nikolaeva, for me, is she always seems to find ways to pull out gestures, nuances, voicings, hidden secret little snippets, that no one else has ever noticed, it seems. And, of course, in these particular pieces, it's far too easy simply to "play the notes" ... after all, can seem to be WAY less going on contrapuntally for the piano-forte than in the WTC, Goldbergs, Art of Fugue, etc.
So, it's really kind of extra amazing that she still goes on doing her thing, finding all the secret gestures, emphases, hidden nooks and corners (and, also, really using the dynamic range of the piano) to make these pieces seem almost newly discovered all over again.
I mean, seriously, when have I ever felt so moved or devastated by the slow movement of the 1st concerto? Crazy. Oh, and also thank you~!

Wow. I don't think I've ever liked a single recording of Sviatoslav's interpretations of Bach, but this drew me in from the first notes. I will be listening to her for more than a season.

@@elmiramuradova561I could go with saying she was better than Richter in playing Bach. I feel that Richter coasted on his innate musicality when playing Bach. He didn't demonstrate any penetrating understanding of the music; the performances were good because he was talented and diligent.

Shostakovich decided to write Preludes and Fugues after he had heard Nikolayeva playing WTC, he kind of dedicated this work to her. So, her playing of Shostakovich's Preludes and Fugues is pretty much canonical.

Wonder what you think of Andrej Gavrilov which I love more. Tatiana was good with the Goldberg. Helmut Walcha although he came from the lineage of the Thomas church, could not compare with Tatiana on this piece.

Thanks very much for posting these special recordings. The world is in your debt. I believe they were actually once available on cds (in a boxed set) for about 5 minutes, but I have never seen a copy for sale; and the lp box is quite hard to find in the U.S., and pricey no matter where in the world it is sold. I wonder why Melodiya hasn't done digital transfers of these recordings and re-released them. As her many solo Bach recordings attest, Nikolayeva's way with Bach is both natural and compelling.

Сергей Евгеньевич Сенков - заслуженный работник Высшей школы, профессор, кандидат искусствоведения, декан фортепианного факультета Российской академии музыки им. Гнесиных, член ЕРТА, вице-президент фонда А.Н. Скрябина.
С.Е. Сенков окончил Музыкальное училище при МГК им. П.И. Чайковского (класс Р.Ю. Чернова), Московскую государственную консерваторию им П.И. Чайковского (класс профессора Т.П. Николаевой) и ассистентуру-стажировку ГМПИ (ныне РАМ) им. Гнесиных (класс Т.Д. Гутмана).
Концертную деятельность в России и за рубежом С.Е. Сенков начал со студенческих лет. Принимал участие в исполнении и записи цикла «12 клавирных концертов И.С. Баха», осуществленного Т.П. Николаевой и С.Я. Сондецкисом. Дважды входил в число победителей Всесоюзных конкурсов пианистов: в Ленинграде (1977) и Первого Всесоюзного конкурса имени Рахманинова в Москве (1983). Записывался на радио, выпустил компакт-диски с записями фортепианных произведений С.В. Рахманинова, В.А. Моцарта и М. Равеля.
С.Е. Сенков защитил диссертацию «Специфика стиля и проблемы интерпретации фортепианных сонат и вариаций С.В. Рахманинова», является автором сборников и статей, посвященных проблемам фортепианной интерпретации, музыкального образования и культуры, а также ряда фортепианных транскрипций.
Активно заниматься педагогикой С.Е. Сенков начал с 1980 года. Работал в ССМШ им. Гнесиных, АМУ при Московской консерватории, ГМПИ им. Гнесиных (ныне РАМ), Датской Королевской академии музыки, KBS-MEDIA консерватории в Сеуле, Президентском центре для одарённых детей «Сириус» (Сочи).
Следствием интенсивной педагогической и концертно-просветительской деятельности С.Е. Сенкова стали многочисленные (свыше 50) лауреатские звания, завоёванные его учениками на престижных российских и международных конкурсах.
С.Е. Сенков постоянно концертирует, проводит мастер-классы, работает в жюри конкурсов пианистов в России, Австрии, Великобритании, Германии, Греции, Дании, Китае, Мексике, Сербии, США, Франции, Швейцарии, Южной Корее и др.
С.Е. Сенков награжден медалями МСМД, РАМ и Союза журналистов РФ, почётной грамотой министра культуры РФ и др.

Bach BWV 1052 by Nikolayeva became a shining model of Osetinskaya's wonderful play of 1052.

Sadly it is very hard if not impossible to find Nikolayeva CDs playing Bach. I dont now why they dont release them anymore.

Scribendum in Japan has issued a 37 CD set of most of her recordings, which presumably includes this one. A few are available on Amazon for around £80 sterling.

I am very impressed by her performance of Concerto No. 5 in F minor, BWV 1056. The beginning is like a dance in a ball-room, yet clearly dominated by the male dancer. And then ... at 1:16:07... the prima donna starts to sing her solo-flute song. Excellent!
I was fan of hers long ago. She never fully appreciated in America. Hoomeyow!!

Михаил Петухов родился в 1954 г. в Варне, Болгария. Рано начал брать уроки фортепиано и композиции и в возрасте десяти лет впервые представил свои сочинения публике. Переехав вместе с семьей на Украину, Петухов продолжил занятия в Киевской специальной музыкальной школе. В годы обучения стал лауреатом IV Международного конкурса им. И. С. Баха (1972, Лейпциг, III премия). Образование продолжил в Московской государственной консерватории им. П. И. Чайковского по классу профессора Т. П. Николаевой. Вместе с ней и другими её учениками (С. Сенковым, М. Евсеевой) в сезоне 1975-1976 впервые представил в России все 12 клавирных концертов Баха. Именно в консерватории, которую Михаил Степанович окончил в 1979 г., ему посчастливилось повстречать великих музыкантов Дмитрия Шостаковича, Святослава Рихтера, Эмиля Гилельса и др.
В 1975 г. Петухов стал лауреатом VII Международного конкурса королевы Елизаветы в Брюсселе. Этот успех, в частности, позволил ему исполнять на концертах собственные сочинения. После конкурса Михаил Петухов получил приглашения посетить с концертами США, Европу и Японию, но из-за политической ситуации в стране не смог сделать этого до 1988 г.
В настоящее время Михаил Степанович сочетает преподавательскую работу в Московской консерватории с активной концертной и композиторской деятельностью.
В 2015 г. его ученик Дмитрий Маслеев стал победителем XV Конкурса Чайковского в Москве.
