If I'm going hiking and there's the possibility of ice or packed snow, the ‪@Kahtoola‬ #Microspikes are always in my pack. They provide great traction in potentially slippery conditions. The "spikes" are quite aggressive, and while the microspikes are easy to put on/take off, I have kept them on for small sections of intermittent bare, rocky ground, and I haven't noticed any damage to the spikes so far. They feel very sturdy and instill confidence in every step on icy or snowy terrain. The main limitation that I've observed is that certain types of snow can be prone to forming a snowball underfoot.
The spikes are made of hardened steel and attach to the main "chassis" via reinforced eyelets. The body of the microspikes is made of a thermoplastic elastomer that retains elasticity down to -22°F. The size medium weighs 11.9 ounces, so they're not heavy to throw in your pack, and they can be stored in the included drawstring sack. The Kahtoola Microspikes come with a 2-year limited warranty. I hope the company stands behind its product because at $74.95 retail, I feel that it's a pretty hefty price tag. All in all, I've been happy with my Microspikes, and I hope they last for years to come.
