To be fair, the Quest 2 has like three IPD settings, many people don't find one that exactly works for them.

I have no issue helping when someone's incapable of solving a problem because they're in over their head, whether it's because they lack the knowledge/resources to solve it themselves or because they tried and either got stuck or couldn't fix something, but I don't want to be the problem solver because of learned helplessness. I've personally had 1 big computer problem when my GPU was half-dead half-working, and I wasn't able to figure out if and how to fix it and wasn't sure if there was anything else I could try before buying a new GPU, but when I asked someone more knowledgeable than me for help my question wasn't "can you fix it?" it was "do you have any suggestions for what other resources I should look into to try and fix it myself?" Sometimes the only way for someone to have fewer problems is to let them struggle their way through a small problem and learn how to resolve small problems independently.

If you are under 40, and the solution is to unplug and replug a cable, or it's the first solution on TH-cam/Google, you could have done it yourself.
But, if you actually tried to fix it yourself, or help me when I need something, Then I will be happy to help.

In reality, there is a solution we just have yet to find it.

EXACTLY! 1 hour podcasts released by people are over too soon! I would happily enjoy a 4+ hour podcast over the week of doing chores/tasks every week! Sometimes I don’t get time to listen to it all before the next comes out so I continue listening to it until I’ve finished it and then start the next one. I kind of love it when I get a backlog because I know I have tons of hours of content to keep me entertained! Sometimes I get distracted and may let it play through and end up going back and rewatching. So hopefully as a longtime YT Premium customer this benefits them!
They should defo try aim for specials like 8 hour podcasts, or 12 or 24, maybe even for charity. I’d happily tune in live for those and rewatch whatever I missed. Would defo donate and buy merch during those special streams as well, even though I’m in the UK and postage costs more than the merch haha.

Hey Linus, In most of the Final Fantasy games there was an impenetrable barrier spell called 'Trine' which would absorb all hits (it sounds very similar to the barrier spell you describe), but 'Trine' could be defeated by a magic spell called 'Bio' that would disolve 'Trine' instantly. Does your Chemist not have anything like this available to them? Not sure if this mechanic is in the game, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

Linus and Luke talking about hiring woes hits me right in the heart. I think what people who don’t hire don’t get is that one a person by person basis all these things might seem insignificant or could be explained away in the interest of giving people the benefit of the doubt but when you’re talking to 60 people over the course of 6 months, patterns start to emerge and you can see the difference between those people who don’t give a shit and those who do, and that makes a massive difference to how much work it’s gonna be for me and the rest of the team to make a prospective hire productive and people who don’t care drain the life out of a talented team.

In the UK they collect though data on medical care other systems don't have and have access to education records.
The majority of highschool graduates are girls, the majority of people starting medical training are women.
40% of graduate doctors who go on to specialise are women
      10% of surgeons are women
Male patients have equal results from surgery between women and men leading their care... female patients have better recovery and fewer complications after surgery by a woman
It's quite upsetting that Germany doesn't collect that data and I can't assess how this came to emerge from British health records

this is why I love that my high school has 3D printers freely available for us to use, and a course for us on how to use them. About a year ago the attachment mechanism for my desk lamp broke and I just spent like 20 minutes replicating it in CAD and printed a replacement the next day at my school. Also a lot of the bigger libraries in Finland have 3D printers that you can just use, with some restrictions

I actually researched that problem with a lack of tech skills the younger generation has in me ed tech class while pursuing my degree.
From my survey data, a lot of kids these days have had UI so well designed, if its not something they can fix in one click, they just give up because its not worth their time. So stuff like troubleshooting computer problems or even as basic as doing something in word beyond the initial top ribbon, they don’t know it.
A lot of us grew up in a weird “beta testing” era of tech and we are now in a place where software especially is so well designed that there is little need for troubleshooting skills. Its a blessing and curse

not sure if I agree completely. could have bought a mac or stuck with windows and prebuilt machines back in the days but I was CURIOUS! went through the hassle of installing various linux distros (usually split up onto up to 10 CDs). those were the days where you'd need to read and try for months to get any signal out of your graphics card (xserver xorg screw you), let's not even mention how much work it was to get WiFi or sound running. I really had no use for linux back then I just wanted to learn. once everything was up and running I'd start from scratch because that fresh release of some distro had a wicked sick looking new window manager...
one xmas my parents told me I can get a new computer, instead I bought a graphics card, bigger RAM, another HDD and a TV card because I knew that for the same money I'd end up with a better system overall going the upgrade route. I had no clue about hardware, it was the first time I even opened a PC. again had to do lots of digging and reading on dialup internet to figure things out but I did.
Maybe youngins lack this kind of curiosity today because computers are not new to them, their parents probably had a machine at home long before they were born.
I'm so glad I went through all this trouble because today computers are the most important tool for my job and I'm in control of my tools (for the most part), not the other way around.

When trying to reverse engineer the system will become highly inefficient, largely equivalent to attempting to tweak a piece of software using disassembly tools these days.

Linus's experience with Fantasian mirrors my own exactly.
It's a really cool game until the second half then it just becomes stupidly overtuned bosses that require very specific strategies to beat and if you miss one rotation then the boss kills one party member and generally you aren't able to stabilise the fight after that point. They just aren't fun to fight.

I hope we see some company come up with a way to do an encrypted sandbox without absurd overhead soon, that can just encrypt the game process in a way that can't be cracked (i.e. each time you boot it automatically rerolls the keys). It's how lots of DRM works, but we're seeing the performance impact on Denuvo and similar. If the figure out how to reduce that impact, sandboxing a game in a way that breaks any memory access would be a much better solution than driver-level rootkit anticheat, that stuff's just way too invasive for anything other than a dedicated gaming machine that not everyone can afford.

Edit: I agree with Linus about making the effort to resolve the issue before reaching out for help.
In defense of the refresh rate issue from Linus's family friend: I discovered that my 100Hz monitor and 60Hz monitors caused ALL my monitors to sync at 60Hz - it had nothing to do with Vsync and yes, the main screen was set to 100Hz. Turns out WALLPAPER ENGINE rendering animations was forcing the main screen to 60Hz despite clearly showing 100Hz and vsync set to OFF. After I set wallpaper engine to a static png, it works perfectly fine.
My cousin was showing off his insane ultra ultrawide 1440p 240hz monitor as well as 3 external 1440p monitors and when I sat in front of it, I said to him this does not feel like 240Hz despite windows reporting 240Hz. I unplugged a few of his monitors and sure enough, the display's fluidity suddenly felt way faster. He said he'd never seen the monitor that smooth before. Probably a bandwidth issue on the GPU but it is very difficult to troubleshoot without firsthand experience. It took me over a year to figure out my wallpaper engine issue.

HAHAHAHAHAH I can't believe Microsoft STILL didn't fix that issue with windows. It's been like 8 years since I discovered this bug. There's tens or hundreds of threads about this issue with thousands of comments on microsoft's tech support website and they still haven't allocated the necessary budget for investigating it.
About 5 years ago NVidia tried fixing it but quickly found out it's not a problem from their drivers but from windows and wrote about it in one of their release patchnotes. This isn't only an issue with walpaper engine but with ANY animation on windows like for example hovering over a youtube video in a browser while the window is on the 60hz monitor.
Thankfully I stopped caring about it like 5 years ago when I replaced my secondary 60hz monitor with a 240hz one. While this bug could still happen to me because my main monitor is a 144hz one it's far from noticeable unless I play something competitive on the 240hz one and something's playing on my main (which hardly ever happens).

Tech support for people who aren't technical, especially over the phone, is its own kind of hell. I've been trying to help out some of the older folks in my neighborhood the last few years with computer stuff and its beyond frustrating almost all the time... especially when they do exactly what Linus was talking about contacting you about EVERYTHING else to do for them. Had one ask me to help with their DYI home security, then asked me to set them up for two other family members of theirs across town, that progressed into asking me to do plumbing, etc. You have to be careful about the people you help because some of them will start to take advantage of your generosity. Its also better in most cases to teach them to be far more self sufficient so they don't feel like they need to get help for simple things.

And as Luke mentioned, as tech-savvy as people are these day, the fact that people still don't just "google the question, Moss" when they think of a question is crazy. Even hand-holding someone through a problem-solving situation doesn't seem to transfer to whatever the next issue comes up to, but as chat mentioned, the moment you answer one thing for someone, you become the defacto go-to tech support person for them as if you are their dedicated 24/7 Geek Squad with nothing better to do than to instantly jump at a moment's notice to fix every little thing they can't be bothered to figure out.

Oh what fun it is to play,

    Verse 2:
    Custom water-cooled loops,
    Glittering like freshly fallen snow,
    Oh, the fans and LEDs,
    Put on quite the show!
    We overclock with glee,
    And benchmark with delight,
What a thrill it is to see,
    Our frame rates taking flight!
    Chorus:
    Jingle bells, tech is swell,
    Our rigs are running fine,
Oh what fun it is to play,
    On our battle stations prime!
    Verse 3:
Gone are the days of waiting,
For games to load and start,
Now we fire up our SSDs,
And watch them do their part.
We frag and slay with ease,
    Thanks to our advanced gear,
Oh, what a Christmas it will be,
    With the latest tech premier!
    Chorus:
    Jingle bells, tech is swell,
    Our rigs are running fine,
Oh what fun it is to play,
    On our battle stations prime!
    Outro:
    So, tech enthusiasts, let's unite,

The “not building computers for people” bit hits home for me. I literally just had a (younger) friend visit my house yesterday, bring his laptop, and ask me to increase the VRAM on his Ryzen 5700U’s integrated GPU. He’s literally just trying to play Genshin Impact at a stable 30 fps on 1080p medium settings. I told him, that was impossible. Either lower the settings or use a better PC. Hell, get an iPad and a Bluetooth controller and you’ll be fine for Genshin.
I showed him my midrange living room PC. I had to redownload Genshin Impact and reset my password there, since I dropped it after playing for 1 day a long ass time ago. I showed him this is a 6650 XT. Look. I can play Genshin Impact at 4k medium settings with it pretty much at 60 fps 99% of the time. The laptop is not gonna cut it.
And his OBSESSION with VRAM. No matter how many times I tell him, I think he’s convinced a 12 GB RTX 3060 is more powerful than the 8 GB RTX 3070. It blows my mind how he never learns.

Makes me think "something something, Vicky, something something" from the Janet/Michael ploy in The Good Place

31:00 When I set up a PC, I do a restore point and put the shortcut on the desktop so when they inevitably screw it up, they can click it and get back to how I had it.

+1 to going for fidelity at the expense of convenience. Tethering / cables. Dedicated tracking beacons. BIG SPEAKERS. They wouldn't exist if they weren't all better.

Linus' "stress test" of the PSVR2's eye tracking is both hilarious and enormously helpful!!

3:48:00 One of my friends is a travelling automation engineer who goes and sets up equiptment for big manufacturing houses. Canada is one of the worst places to go. Entering the country for work is a nightmare to the point where you don't even know if you have permission till you land in Canada and have a conversation with the immigration officer about why you are there. The conversations are pretty hilarious.
Immigration officer: "Why are you here"
Friend: "My company has been hired to setup specialized technology for your countries production lines"
Immigration officer:"Why aren't Canadian citizens doing this work?"
What my friend would like to say: "**** if I know, your people hired me and have paid me money"
What he has to say or he gets turned around:"I have talents that are hard to find and my company is the only one who works on this equiptment" (not actually true but that's what he has found has worked to get allowed into the country.
You mess up any question and you get turned back immediatly. Then you have to explain to the company who already wrote the check why their government is ***ed up.

QDOLED needs a few more generations in the oven. Look up issues with the first gen, bent panels, and they tend to turn green from overheating. They also ran broken firmware for a few months.
LG C/G series supports Dolby vision. WOLED is still great, and still getting better. More importantly, the tech is mature.

The outside in tracking that the Index has is no longer needed. The way forward is tracking sensors inside of the controllers so no cameras are required. This fixes all the occlusion problems. Mounted lighthouses that require power are not coming back.

I've built PCs for loads of friends and family members, or rather, I've physically been there to guide them through it. I've found that people, if you build their PC for them are too afraid to touch things, for fear of running it or breaking stuff. If they on the other hand have participated in building it themselves, then it's far easier to go back, re-seat a CPU, RAM and whatnot later on - because they've already done it.

Luke: if you want to auto splice the ads for Spotify, add an timestamp button to the stream deck, hit the button just before and after the ad read. Auto splice by the timestamp. If the timestamps can't be lined up magically, have the stream deck add an inaudible tone (outside human speech frequencies) instead and search for the tone and auto splice.

Weird how Tarkov has this problem of broadcasting the location and status of players to everyone, when 10 years ago while making an MMO one of the first things we assumed was that someone would get into the data stream and decode it, so I basically told everyone to assume that any piece of info we send to the client is as good as rendered.

One nice thing about the IEMs on the sony headset is that you could likely cut them off and replace them with an MMCX/2-pin connector, or even just a female 3.5mm so that you could use an IEM of your choosing instead.

The Quebec French speaking thing, I actually just came home from Montréal. I know some French but it's not exactly the best. Every person I spoke to, I'd start trying to speak French, or even "desole, ne parle beaucoup de francais" and there was exactly one person who did not immediately say "it's okay, I speak English"

Re: tech support for friends/family... if I'm at a family reunion and I haven't talked to you for 12 years, and the first thing out of your mouth to me is "hey my printer is broken", I'm probably going to choose not to know anything about printers that day. If you need help on something and the conversation goes like "come on over, I'll grill some steaks while you fix the computer and then we can eat", I'm probably super down for that. I've had both scenarios and I think it just comes down to people having respect for you personally as a member of the family and for your time as a (probably) functioning adult with your own priorities to deal with.
