I remember watching Bill Kennedy while being home sick from school. He really got me into many old movies that I still watch to this day! God Bless him
Dude...you took the very words right of my mouth. Rita & Bill were my 1st tutors in cinema appreciation. Rita was always a lady. I sometimes tired of Bill's bombast, but in retrospect I look on it with sentimental sweetness.
I was bill’s paperboy ,I delivered the Detroit News to him everyday .He was a great guy .Invited me into his mansion to look at all his signed celebrity autographs and memorabilia.
In the 1950's every Sunday afternoon at 1 pm, my Pop and I would watch old movies on channel 9. I was five years old when it began and have loved old movies ever since. I miss my Dad, and Bill Kennedy. Thanks for the memories!
Watched this when I'd go to my grandparents house they'd watch my cousin Kelly and Corie when we were not ready for school yet those were the days we watched it on channel 50 Detroit good memories loved watching that show,,,
I was trying to tell one of my young co-workers about this guy and I couldn't remember his first name I did remember his last name was Kennedy so of course I Googled it yeah this brings back memories
Please, please Channel 50 create a Bill Kennedy at the Movies TH-cam channel and upload all his old shows! I love his story telling and historical information of all the stars before, during and after the show and the stars that came to visit his studio. I used to watch him after morning kindergarten and lunch on Dad's La-Z-boy where he knew I would fall asleep for an afternoon nap w/o protest. Never under-estimate the brilliance of a shift working Dad!
I moved from Detroit about 26 years ago. I LOVED Bill Kennedy. Just good inside information about movies in the great time of movies. I am sorry, but today is just too much trash. My opinion. RIP Bill.
I Watched SOOO many movies with this man, whenever I had a SICK DAY from school! And he gave you the INSIDE JAB, about the movie, BETTER than anyone today! THANK YOU BILL KENNEDY!
My God, what memories. Bill Kennedy lived across the street from my grandparents in G.P. Shores. I used to go over to his house and swim in his pool with his daughters. This is exactly how I remember him looking. He would answer the front door wearing a smoking jacket and an ascot, cigarette in hand. Always welcomed me into his home.
one of my friends delivered newspapers In G.P Shores and according to his story rode his bike across part of Bill Kennedys grass Bill was NOT happy with him! LOL
Good 'ol Bill. I was in college in Detroit in the late 70's when I discovered him. I was already a fan of classic movies and Bill was the perfect conduit to a daily dose of films from the 30s and 40s. He was a character and made you laugh. I loved his anecdotes about being in the film industry during the 40s. I was watching Mr Skeffington, in which Bill plays one of Betty Davis's admirers. Seeing him brought back memories of Detroit and I wondered if TH-cam had any of Bill's movie intro's. Sure enough, here he is. He would have been the perfect host for TCM.
I have great memories of watching Bill at the movies after school with my mom. That was a big factor in my developing love of and appreciation for good cinema.
My Dad was often mistaken for Bill Kennedy. In the early Seventies we were at Cedar Point in line for the water ride and the young girl working the line yelled OMG it's Bill Kennedy. She ran over to the booth and came back with a pen and paper and asked for his autograph. Dad asked her for her name and he signed a sweet note to her. She teared up and hugged him and said she had watched him her whole life. He was a bookkeeper. When we got off the ride Dad yelled her name and said See ya in the movies. She had the sweetest star struck smile. I miss my Dad and Bill Kennedy.
Thank you for posting this! Have been trying to remember his name from my youth! I grew up in Michigan and all I could remember was this nice guy that sat behind a desk hosting movies. Oh, what a relief!
My Mother and Father watched him every day on Channel 50 while he was getting ready for work. My sister and I walked to School and came for lunch when the Weather was good . It was so nice to see him on the TV .
Whenever my family came home from church, the first thing I did was to turn on the TV and watch Bill Kennedy (after changing from my church clothes). I miss that local flavor.
As a kid I had two options in the summer. Go outside, get some fresh air and exercise, or sit in the basement and watch TV. I, of course, chose TV. I had no particular attachment to old movies, but Bill Kennedy was the only thing on and I sure as.... well I wasn't going to waste my life playing outside when there was a TV around, so I watched old movies and listened to Bill Kennedy. Fast forward 40 years and my love of old movies is a direct product of Bill's show. I love the fact that I was exposed to these films at such a young age. Thanks Bill! And thanks TelevisionDetroit for posting this.
When I was a kid we had two channels and a third became available channel 50 out of Detroit which expanded my world considerably with Bill Kennedy and Saturday night with "The Ghoul and Froggy"
A local station talking about 'school snow days' back in the day in the D-Bill K@ the Movies! And the movies were so so, (being a kid)😊. Still, people loved it-a 1pm tradition. The movie was secondary to his overall appealing personality.
This brings back memories of when Detroit television was great! I even skipped school a couple of times when Kennedy was showing a particularly great film. I should probably be embarrassed to admit that, but I regret nothing!
I skipped a whole week once. LoL I was sick on Monday and on Rita Bell it was Natalie Wood and Robert Redford week. I was in 5th grade and had never seen them before. I had to see more.. Of course, I got in trouble and I don't regret it one bit.
Bill Kennedy, Bob Talbert, Sonny Elliot, The Ghoul, Sir Graves, Rita Bell, JP McCarthy, Ernie Harrell and Paul Carey, Bill Bonds, Amyre Macupson, Al Ackerman….and many others-I’m sure I’m missing some. I sure feel privileged to have lived through that era.
Jac LeGoff, John Kelly, Marilyn Turner, Jerry Hodak, Rob Kress. I'm just mentioning the Channel 7 people. Rich Fisher, Doris Biscoe, Jim Herrington, Erik Smith. Diana Lewis.
My father Richard McCloskey who worked on the T.V. side of C.K.L.W. use to bring Bill Kennedy to the house around the time when Bill had i think it was a White Ford Thunderbird hardtop with a small circular window and i remember riding in the back seat of that car. Anyone out there remember that car?
This brings back some really great memories of my childhood and teenage years!!! Lord knows I wish I could go back in time for those days!!! The world now is a place that I don't want to live in!!! I hate the world now and I prefer the old world better!!! My opinion!!!
Thank you for this but I remember when he was on channel CKLW for a least a decade (Channel 9 Windsor, Ont) but when Canada could no longer have independent channels and had to comply to the England's new law. He set the bar for me when I watch TCM hosts. Fab of a guy and ahead of his time.
The Cary Grant movie: "Destination Tokyo" features him as the diving officer. It made me do a double take.If I was home sick from school, his show was the high point of my day.I've tried to get DVD's of my favorites and without his commentary,it's not the same.
Remember him well at CKLW, when I grew up in Detroit. I remember him doing the commercials for Bonbuilt home improvement. He started out Leonard Box built his home for 3,000.00 and saved money, of course he stole most of the material. You can save money without being a thief by using bonbuilt . He was every bit as entertaining as Arthur Godfrey.
4:16 we had a version of Bill Kennedy at the movies in Cleveland, 8 p.m. every Sunday night seemed like he ran those movies for years it was good to watch with some of his inside information see a Bill Kennedy wherever you are?
I remember watching this at my grandparents house with my two cousins loved this show along with Family Affair favorite good old days miss my grandparents and cousin they have been gone for many yrs and goes those were the day and also watching Bozo now you can't even think about talking about clowns
His opening theme "Just In Time", doe's anyone know anything about the particular recording. I used to watch Bill Kennedy a lot as a child, and have always loved the recording.
I've been searching high and low for who did THIS particular recording too. I've everyone from Bert Kaempfert to Jackie Gleason to Stan Kenton to Steve Allen, and none have panned out. The closest to this arrangement I've found is the instrumental break in Peggy Lee's version.
Always used to watch Bill. Hey, TelevisionDetroit....is there any chance you can come up with the opening for Scream Theater, which used to show at 11:30 PM on WXYZ (Channel 7) around the same time as this Bill Kennedy clip? I would kill to see it again!!
The Beverly Hillbillies at the beginning. Is it the ending of the episode "Jed Inherits A Castle" that explains the special guest star Paul Lynde in the credits?
my father Marvin markowitz used to go the show sometimes and talk about being a wrestler and such...do you know where the copy of those shows are thankyou
It's kind of sad. I was only 8yo when he retired, and I probably didn't like him because I think old people scared me or something. Now I watch and he was kind of funny and witty. Wish I had gotten to at least see the intros of more of his movie presentations more often, you know?
Watching Bill Kennedy at the Movies was one of the high points of being sick and not going to school.
It used to be mine, too. I lived on the Ontario side of the Windsor/Detroit area, and there was nothing like Bill Kennedy at The Movies.
Yesss! So many good memories!
I skipped out a lot. Watched Bill a lot.
Yes it was!
Wow exactly!!!
One of the greatest movies hosts ever. Loved his commentaries and the movies he showed!!!!!!!!!
I remember watching Bill Kennedy while being home sick from school. He really got me into many old movies that I still watch to this day! God Bless him

Bill Kennedy at the Movies... 1:00 P.m. Channel 50 WKBD ...
Rita Bell, Bill Kennedy, and the 4:30 Movie each weekday. With Sir Graves and The Ghoul on weekends. A far away time.
Dude...you took the very words right of my mouth. Rita & Bill were my 1st tutors in cinema appreciation.
Rita was always a lady. I sometimes tired of Bill's bombast, but in retrospect I look on it with sentimental sweetness.
Remember when the 4:30 movie had Monster week? Godzilla movies all week long...awesome.
Yes it was the Golden era of Detroit
Don't forget Mayor Coleman Young 💲
@@chrisclark5239 Definitely!! Also, Elvis Week, and Beach Week! I really miss those days.
@@byromania Yes! Those were the good old days.

did you ever know Greg Echlin?
In the 1950's every Sunday afternoon at 1 pm, my Pop and I would watch old movies on channel 9. I was five years old when it began and have loved old movies ever since. I miss my Dad, and Bill Kennedy. Thanks for the memories!
Boy, now this is a memory! LOL! Bill Kennedy Show. Started watching it on Channel 9 CKLW Windsor and then Channel 50 later on.
Was this a Canadian show???
Watched this when I'd go to my grandparents house they'd watch my cousin Kelly and Corie when we were not ready for school yet those were the days we watched it on channel 50 Detroit good memories loved watching that show,,,

It would be amazing if they could do that and show the movies as well.

Detroit, use to be a great town in those days. My Dad was a remote director for WJBK Chanel 2 for 30 plus years.
I feel like Detroit was the center of the country in many ways.
OMG! I remember watching this all the time.
Thanks for posting.
Bill Kennedy was a living breathing IMDB.
I was just thinking, he was imdb before imdb existed.
He was a heavy smoker.
My mom watched this adorable old man every day at 1:00 on channel 50. I have many good memories of watching him and a lot of good movies on his show.

We really lost something when we " gained" more channels. This was good television.
I miss those years, but what a great time to live in SE Michigan. Thank you sir.

Bill at the movies after school with my mom. That was a big factor in my developing love of and appreciation for good cinema.
I remember watching Bill back in the 80's on a small TV.
me too! A small B&W in my parents basement. His show got me hooked on old movies from the 1930-50's. I love film noir too!
My Dad was often mistaken for Bill Kennedy. In the early Seventies we were at Cedar Point in line for the water ride and the young girl working the line yelled OMG it's Bill Kennedy. The theme song is ,”Just In Time”, but which orchestra plays this version which is the theme of this long running gem?
The Beverly Hillbillies at the beginning. Is it the ending of the episode "Jed Inherits A Castle" that explains the special guest star Paul Lynde in the credits?
+Nick albers I would assume so
Does anyone know whose version of “Just in Time” this is? For a while, BK used Count Basie’s version, but this is a different orchestra.
Did Bill Kennedy do the opening for The Adventures Of Superman?
Great video,,,I'm wondering if you have the complete tape,,,I have tapes of Bill in 1990 and 1983
+Skott Mikals I may still have it. This is the only part that remains though. The rest of the movie had the commercials edited.
+TelevisionDetroit Do you have the Kennedy segments? I'd be interested in a trade,,,Thanks
+Skott Mikals No. The only thing I have is what was posted. Not sure if you would still be interested.
+TelevisionDetroit Just interested in the Kennedy segments,,,,Thanks so much :)
I would like to view Bill in the 90’s.

Directed by Allan Adler
what was his theme music?
It's some version of "Just in Time," but I can't find which.
