We often forget how much effort and meaning musicians put into their work. Hours upon hours worth of passion and ideas - all condensed into a track that only lasts a few minutes at most. Here, I'll briefly try to appreciate some of that genius by examining Michael Giacchino's theme for Mysterio, from Spider-Man: Far from Home.

Well, it's fun think, If Wanda or silvy did it the multiverse thing, but if he Doesn't revealed his identy, Andrew and tobey, and the other villains still Going to show up, but, once he mess with The spell, they were there early that shold be, if there was no need to do it the spell (Yeah is confusing now kkkkkk) but maybe All of them still apper on the doctor strange 2 but meeting for the first time, Stephen knew peter parker and maybe star all again NWH But, With An Good Ending gor peter too
In general I feel like Michael Giacchino's Spider-Man music is pretty underrated.
His work is brilliant and definitely does deserve more attention. BUT I do have to admit that while his stuff is masterfully written, I think his themes struggle to be super ultra memorable. They are recognizable but just not as much as the most iconic ones out there. I truly love his work (obviously) but that’s probably why people don’t look him up as much as Hans Zimmer or John Williams.
@@artloverivy Giacchino's themes lack the emotional depth the Danny Elfman and James Horner themes had.
Giacchino's themes are more action oriented, thus a little generic and "loud".
@@dingkong5034 clearly you didn't hear the NWH soundtracks: When Aunt May died, Forget Me Knots when MJ and Ned forgets MJ, and Giacchino added choir to it. You're just biased, that's all
@@rohanvarma2836 I heard the No Way Home soundtrack. They're great, they just don't hit as hard as Elfman and Horner.
@@rohanvarma2836 NWH soundtrack sucked ass compared to his other work
Best interpretation of a live-action Spider-Man villain, next to Raimi's GG.
Design is revamped while still accurate, his powers are modernized while still keeping him as a master of illusion, his "fake hero that ends up framing Spider-Man" concept is expanded into a plot of a movie and Jake Gyllenhaal nailed it as Mysterio.
agreed man
You think Doc ock could be better ?
@@brohdez8857 I liked Raimi's Doc Ock, but Mysterio was better.
For starters, Mysterio is relevant to the sequel (NWH) after his defeat while Doc Ock is an afterthought in SM3.
I feel like Mysterio deserves a no 6 position
@@Shubbhaaam As in what?
Honestly I love how it was used in "Damage Control" just it feels like the echoes of Mysterio on Peter and all the damage he did to him is really pulsing as that scene progresses
Yes! Someone in the comments told me about that earlier and I was shocked I didn’t notice it in the theater 😂
@@artloverivy it's very subtle in the actual film, covered with a lot of SFX and dialogue so it's not easy to notice
Omg yess you can hear a bit of the theme symbolizing the consequences of mysterios actions in the last movie whem he looses edith the tech and so on.
This theme has a really retro feel to it, sounds a bit like something we'd hear in an old cartoon, with some modern tune-ups.
To me it sounds like an older James Bond flick theme song for like a villain or something. Especially the neutral part in the song that's neither good nor bad
@@larrytoons6220 that too, yeah.
Something A Sam Raimi Spider man movie could have
1:34 I can not escape this powerful vibe going from the brass section like "YOU UTTER FOOL! YOU'VE BEEN BAMBOOZLED!"
Interesting observation. I guess that part does exude a sense of grandeur and superiority, essentially showing how great Mysterio thinks he is.
ABSOLUTELY! The MCU portrayal of Mysterio could not have possibly been better and more true to the character. Even though we knew "Well he's a classic villain he's of course going to be bad", they still kept the "how" under wraps and led to a great story. I particularly love this theme because the "neutral" part (at 0:39) sounds straight out of the spider-man 2 video game!
I really enjoyed how they still made him a twist villain despite most people already knowing the character. Because for people who myself who weren’t previously familiar with Spider-Man villains, Mysterio made for a great reveal.
I think they could've portrayed him petter, maybe, actually using his suit to fight spiderman and maybe have an ACTUAL fight between spiderman and mysterio
Why jon watts, why
I love illusions
@@Oznerol1234 that’s how he’s supposed to be, an illusionist
@@Oznerol1234 Umm... No, Mysterio doesn't possess any superhuman abilities. He always have been illusionist and special effects artist and used these to commit crimes. Comic book Mysterio never used and knew how to use magic.
Mysterio was so great, I whish we could've see more of him. With his powers, there are so many possibilities with plot and creativity
Given that a Mysterio with a new suit appears in the multiversal breakdown in NWH, pretty sure he will appear again
Remember, he's just a guy.
His crew never got arrested in the end, so it's entirely possible they could return, all they need to do is “recast” Beck
@@mrhellvictor Yea I took those villains in the sky as hints at who they plan to do next. Pretty sure Kraven is being done at Sony so then showing Mysterio could mean he didn’t actually die or he did die and his team will keep Mysterio “alive”.
@@yanchunchan9321 who says beck is dead? peter never checked if he was and beck could have easily acted a fake death scene since in the whole movie he is director and main actor the entire time
No villian has ever turned Peter's life upside down the way Mysterio has. Revealing his secret identitiy like "Wow".
FFH gave us the best version of Mysterio we could’ve asked for. Turning a normally B list villain into a genuine threat that had actual impact on Peter’s life.
MG is fantastic at conveying story beats through his villain themes, with Mysterio’s transforming from heroic to malevolent, and Vulture’s being a dark rendition of the Avengers’ motif to symbolize him repurposing their discarded tech to make weapons.
Great villain , great theme but bad movie , homecoming and NWH are better

Far from homee and No way home is better

Can't see why so many people dislike Far From Home, its one of my favorite MCU movies, thanks to this theme obvious
I agree. Overall it’s just a really solid movie.
@@artloverivy i think they disappointed about mysterio power is just CG
@@thaizilla1984 I guess I can understand that. For me it worked perfectly though because his whole thing is illusions, and holograms fit that concept perfectly.
There’s a lot of problems with the film, but the soundtrack ain’t one of them
Some people will hate on Tom's Spidey just because he isn't Tobey Maguire, but yeah Far From Home isn't perfect. My main issue with it is that it kind of repeats Peter's arc that he had in Homecoming, where he has to come to terms that he is his own superhero and he shouldn't be in Iron Man's shadow. Mysterio being as awesome as he is, is the second villain in a Spider-Man movie that became a super villain because of Tony Stark
I view Mysterio as the main villain throughout the Spider-Man trilogy mainly because he destroyed Peter’s life in No way home as well as the future events to come
I like how both Spider-Man and Mysterio are set up in Civil War
I wonder if we will see Mysterio again in the MCU.
Yeah plus, at least in my mind, was the only villain that actually BEAT Spider-Man in the movies. I mean think about, although he died, he used that as a way to ruin Parker’s life permanently by exposing his identity plus making half the world think he’s a villain. Plus for those that seen how No way Home ends, Mysterio exposing Spider-Man caused THAT to happen
@@josephbrennan370 I hope so, I can see him being like Loki but staying more villainous. It wouldn’t be that hard to bring him back as well just say he made an illusion so that he died and is just buying his time
Totally agree. He basically won
Micheal's work has always been amazing. From Ratatouille to Doctor Strange, he's done it all and it's always been top notch. His work is absolutely brilliant.
Ratatouille’s score is so overlooked. He did a fantastic job with that one.
@@artloverivy He really did. Also his Star Trek soundtracks are just amazing.
His work on The Incredibles was amazing
@@brianoliveira42 It really was!
Jurassic worlds score is underrated.
I love how there's enough minor chords in there to make you feel uneasy about how mostly make it feels, until closer to the end where he reveals himself and is just minor chords
*Mostly major it feels
Honestly I hadn’t thought of it this way before, I loved the sound of the theme and thought it fit the character but I never thought that hard about why that was, this video perfectly shows why. Thank you for making me appreciate a soundtrack that I already love even more!
Np! Art appreciation is what we do here :)
Did you spot his theme a bit in No Way Home? I got chills
@@biga7682 Yeah, I loved that little detail.
@@biga7682 when was it exactly? I watched it once in theaters a few weeks ago and I don't remember hear in the theme.
@R17Too920 yeah you're right, I just relistened to it. Pretty good track overall.
It's actually in a minor key from the start, but the melody resolves on major chords at first to make it sound heroic. If you listen closely there's a sinister undertone, almost like it's mocking the audience for thinking he's the hero.
I think the reason why I think it's perfect it's because it underlines with his story. From being shown as a hero, then later on showing his lies and illusions he created to look like a hero, but in truth, he was a villain. I really like how one rhythm repeats twice, with the second one sounding more menacingly, like a villain.
Edit: Also now I noticed that you put a subtitles about that and commentary informing about this, so my bad and I only wrote it through my experience and thoughts about character, story and his motives.
Edit 2: Also, forgot to mention, but the image at 1:50 is gorgeous. Might be a good desktop wallpaper.
Huh that's strange. The video should have captions automatically on. I wonder why that doesn't work for everyone.

The most memorable villain theme in the MCU. No contest.
nah Hela's is a bit better and Thanos's is simple but menacing
Bruh, Killmonger
NOPE. Killmongers theme takes the cake 7 days a week.
@@alexbarcovsky4319 meh its just technoish
@@BillPlunderbonesTew8 It is the most memorable and iconic though. I can hardly remember Mysterio's Incredibles-ass soundtrack 5 minutes after hearing it, whereas killmongers TO-DO-DO-DOOOOOOO is straight up iconic.
I was so happy to see my all time favourite Marvel villain in live action, and not only did they do an absolutely incredible job with his characterisation and visuals, but they gave such a perfect theme for him. I was so happy that they weren't afraid to give him the fishbowl head, and kept true to his character design
Using subtitles was actually a clever and unique format. It really allows you to enjoy it as the same time you get a deeper understanding--and it's totally concise. Nice job!
Yay I’m glad it worked! Most people seem on board with it so I’ll keep using this format in the future 👍🏼
When I heard it I was exactly like "Wow, that's a really generic superhero theme that you can easily convert to a evil version".
Both the soundtrack and the movie is extremely underrated.
I think this is one of the best MCU villain themes because not only is the melody super melodic and iconic, but the instrumentation being kind of wacky and over-the-top with the synths and guitars really sells the character and gives it a distinct sound, not to mention the duality of his hero/villain theme, a technique I am a huge fan of.
i love how it shifts to heroic-sounding to sinister-sounding, just like his twist villain role
Great analysis! I’m happy you did it in subtitles, instead of talking over the music. It’s a epic theme for an epic character.
Glad you liked it! 😊
There is also the detail of how "mysterious" the theme can sound, and how it could also be played as a suspense song in a magic show. These are exquisite details.
A mix of mystery, triumph and despair. A perfect representation of his character
a perfect theme for a man who perfects the art of illusion; this theme shows how convincing his "hero" act is, and still fits him even when his tricks are revealed
Giacchino is becoming one of my favorite composers.
The Incredibles, Jurassic World, Star Trek, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man…
That’s a lot of popular themes right there.
I loved how during one of the scenes in No Way Home you could hear Mysterio's theme. Giacchino always does a good job with the villain themes, all the other MCU villains aside from Vulture, Thanos and Mysterio have bland themes that are forgettable and don't even stand out.
I love that base rhythm which still shows it's the same character, sounds cool on a hero and a villain
This Mysterio is literally Pure Evil. He has NO good qualities, NO good motive to do what he does, cares ONLY about himself, and even though he is just a guy with a bunch of illusion making drones, he still did a major problem than many villains with more resources than him by revealing Peter's identity to the world.
There’s a website showing pure evil villains, and Mysterio is on there
mysterio is so well-written that even i, who already know mysterio's illusion, still never saw the reveal coming. i almost thought mcu is writing a different path with mysterio, being peter's ally. jesus.
Quite literally like the way it ztarts off with big orchestral pieces to resemble heroic actions, then it turns into fast paced beats to reflect Quintinn's evil intent
Yo don't forget us the fans you keep giving your precious heart right now. Once you become big.
1:51 I like how you can hear the hologram hidden under the “hero” theme as if projecting it
I’d also like to add that his themes sounds overly dramatic to convey how he’s trying so hard to seem like a superhero
Mysterio is definitely an underrated spiderman villain. Also you should do a lot more of these theme analysis.
Edit: I also really hope what if season 2 has an episode of what if Mysterio was telling the truth. That would be awesome. (Mainly because I want more Mysterio but also because it would be a very cool what if)
I have another theme analysis in the works right now! And yeah that would be a cool concept for an episode. Honestly What if...? Just has so much freaking potential.
another way of saying it would be, "what if Mysterio wasn't a liar," right? or am i wrong?
I've been obsessed with this theme since I heard it for the first time in the theater. Mysterio was already my favorite Spider-Man villain by far, but for some reason, the tonal shift from major to minor in the middle of the song just blew my mind. Not only was Gyllenhaal's performance perfect, but the storytelling in the song itself made me so happy to hear. I'm so glad to see this theme getting the respect it deserves!
The Electro Suite is hands down the best villain theme ever because it actually conveys the man's pain and his advent to evil.
Agreed.
I love how it changes from heroic to evil in a few parts. Not truly knowing his intentions.
I like how in the beginning it gives such a typical superhero-ish tone, trying to portray Mysterio as a hero. Absolutely love this theme
I have to applaud the mcu for making me think they were gonna go the route of Mysterio being a hero even though I knew he was an established villain.
The funny thing about this movie is that all of the people who only watched the movies, were surprised by the twist. But all of us who read the comics, knew exactly where this was going.
I love how after the main transition it turns a tiny bit evil, and then slowly changes notes to lower to go to the next evil part. It’s like slowly uncovering a sheet to identify something true.
Mysterio is an asshole yet so good at it, you know... kind of a mastermind
Dont know if anyone knows this, but in 0:12 you can hear the melody of The Incredibles (2002). Just a fun-fact, since I loved the incredibles. And another funfact, Michael Giiachino actually was the musical composer for the incredibles. :)
This theme was briefly played in "No Way Home", made me miss him even more. 😩
I think another bit that adds to it is that Mysterio’s Theme is the only theme/leitmotif in the MCU Spidey score that primarily features a specific type of sound:
A synth. Or in other words, an artificial instrument.
And then notice how the synth rhythm forms the backbone of the entire piece.
Giacchino is an inspiration
it's things like this why i LOVE soundtracks, painting an auditory picture with instrumentation, key changes and other musical tricks that relate to the character or idea they are representing
We always take such little things in the background as granted, I appreciate all the masterminds behind this theme.
I like how it explains why it's a masterpiece in the caption
Admittedly I've never finished FFH, never even got to Mysterio's evil revelation, but I found out what happened later. And I have to say: Mysterio was the best part of FFH. Great video! Love what you do.
Thank you 😊
@@artloverivy Oh wow, you responded! I wasn't expecting that
Please never stop doing this videos!!!!!
If you think about it, Mysterio was basically the sixth member of the Sinister Six, he just happened to die before the rest of the villains arrived but he basically kickstarted what would ruin Peter’s life, with Green Goblin finishing it at the end
Yeah unfortunately it was his death that caused the arrival of the others so there’d be no way he could team up with them, UNLESS they were to bring in a Mysterio from another universe at some point. And if they ever do that it’ll probably be a Mysterio that has actual powers!
@@artloverivy idk if youve seen it yet but there is official concept art of Mysterio in his costume fighting dr strange in the statue of liberty fight, which makes me think that hes still alive in the mcu or they planned to bring in a variant of Mysterio with powers
If you think about it, FFH is one giant way of saying "Don't believe everything you see in the internet"
People legit call Mysterio the greatest superhero of all time when he literally got “killed” by a kid and he didn’t SAVE THE UNIVERSE like Tony did
Can i just say, far from home, with the drones, gave us the most plausible explanation on how he does these illusions.
I feel bad for Mysterio, he never got to see the masterpiece that was No Way Home, which was his creation
Everything michael giacchino makes is a masterpiece
Love this analysis. I remember before I even saw the movie, I heard his theme on the soundtrack. Hearing the mechanical synth layered through the song, I knew that Giacchino was telling us that he used technology in his illusions. There is so much more to soundtracks than just background noise. There’s an intricate level of storytelling in well-written film scores.
Totally agree. That’s what makes it a Masterpiece 😍
oh!!!!!!!!!!!! so that's why i thought its spider-man's generic fighting theme or just a generic heroic theme, IT was supposed to portray it. i just didn't realize it til the end of this video. good catch!
I just wanted to express how much I appreciate your work, along with other 'why theme is a musical masterpiece.' This is exactly how I appreciate and analyze themes; by associating them with the story and the character to which it belongs. And I am glad that finally I have found people with such an ability to appreciate art for the sake of art itself, and share it with others for them to appreciate.

Wow thank you sm that means a lot 💖
That movie made me wish he really was a hero so badly. He was cool as a hero, like a combination of iron man and dr strange. Dr. Doom but as a good guy.
This is absolutely awesome, thanks for bringing such a masterpice as this one, just loooooooved it so much, besides since the first time we watched mysterio introducing himself as a hero from another reality I've been thinking a lot about this weird possibility...what if there's a mysterio who's actually a great hero?? Is there a world where Quentin Beck's lies are, indeed, true?? A great hero saving parallel worlds having his family as his inspiration...DAAAAAMMN this is so sick lol thanks again dude
Thanks for the comment! And yeah if the multiverse is a thing then there’s definitely versions of Mysterio that are actually heroes with superpowers.

FFH doesn't get the amount of praise it deserves in general.
I love Far From Home so much. I loved how it really challenged Peter, messing with his brain and heart in ways he never thought possible. I love Mysterio as a villain too. I'm a 10/10 defender of this movie
finally someone who talks about this section, knew that the song had more than just beautiful music, although even leaving aside the message through rhythm, it is one of my favorite ost
so far in MCU, Mysterio is the greatest villain to me. The plot, the twist, the battle, the illusion, the animation is very satisfying. Jack Gylenhall also plays the Mysterio perfectly, an abusive hero that is changing Peter Parker Life forever up to the next movie "No Way Home" where Spiderman still struggle hard from Mysterio's accusation.

This is such an awesome series idea, as Zemo would say "It is a masterpiece James, complete, comprehensive". Seriously though the MCU and Spidey movies have some of the coolest themes out there, although The Book of Boba Fett theme is the one that's been stuck in my head for the last few days.

Honestly Mysterio is one my top favorite villain from Spider-Man that I went in the movie theater with the full expectation of trickery. Then came the story he's from another planet, and he's doing all these great heroic actions, and may not had noticed the obvious drone (Probably distracted from my excitement) that for a moment I truly fell for his trick XD
0:41 I’m getting a hint of the main theme from penguins of Madagascar and a song from the BL3 psycho krieg DLC called “we die in here all the time”
I’m glad I can appreciate these musical arrangements late than never lol. The music in movies and anime are almost always in the background of my mind when there’s talking and fighting, so I usually never realize how well composed they are!
I love how his theme plays in Far From Home mid credits scene as he effectively won
Thank you Ivy for the deep analysis! Wish you could dissect themes for all MCU Spider-Man films.
I’m not sure if I’ll get around to Spider-Man specific analyses, but there’s definitely more music breakdowns on the way, including a little MCU stuff :)

The hero we deserved.
As mentioned with the robotic noise showing the bots they have it playing for a second at the start so if you know the cue from watching previously you can tell that even from the start there was a cue giving away the illusion
Mysterio honestly reminds me of dr strange in every possible way, it’s awesome that far from home originally counted mysterio as a hero and also spat the multi dimension gag that’s been passed on before this movie exsisted. Mysterio is truly a special character in my heart

His music will always remind me of the incridibles
I always interpreted the rising electronic sound that occurs throughout the song as the drones setting up the illusion, and it seems to be used as a sort of segue from one version of the theme to another. It’s really easy to visualize and a super cool way to show an idea through music.
Michael Giacchino never fails at making themes that are bangers
