War is brewing in the Red Sea as Yemen’s Houthi rebel forces launch attacks on commercial ships in protest against Israel’s war on Gaza. For multinational companies trading and shipping between Asia and Europe, the Suez Canal has now become a high-risk zone. This hostile disruption in world trade has created an opportunity for South Africa to boost its own flagging economy by offering services to ships re-routed past the Cape. It is an extraordinary detour, with hundreds of ships sailing for an extra 10 to 14 days to ensure safe passage through calmer African waters. But these ships appear to be giving South Africa a wide berth, preferring more efficient refuelling stops in Namibia and Mozambique. Why was Transnet so ill-prepared to take advantage of this potential economic windfall?

what happened to the episode about Transnet ports? Why did you take it down? it was on youtube before
Yet another ANC success story!
Stop nonsense!!!
Wow😂😂
We used to have trains for over 100 years, now under the ANC they have been trashed, all goods must now move by expensive trucks, we shoppers pay a high price for this! We are the ones who get hurt!
We still have trains 🚊 in South Africa 🇿🇦…
@Jay-rd3hn there's a difference between having some trains and having a functional rail system. The ANC does not know there is a difference.
@@johanweakley2658 South Africans will get it right
@jay YES WE DO BUT THEY DONT RUN due to theft, corruption =anc
This is a Pravin Gordan mess. He and the ANC must voetsek
Global shipping is subjected to pirates at sea and SA is subjected to pirates in office.
Global shipping is place where it needs to choose between the lesser of the two evils.
I remember Derrick did a piece on the Port in Port Elizabeth a year or two ago when it come under new management and Derrick highlighted the maintenance. The new manager said to Derrick to come back in a years time to follow up and that progress would have been made, I wonder how that is holding up?
It is just shocking how ABSOLUTELY USELESS the ANC government is !
Yet they will still be the largest party at next election… 🙊
😂😂😂😂😂
Corruption Corruption Corruption
Apartheid is useless and ANC much better than apartheid…
You took the words out of my mouth. Unfortunately for us, this is an indictment on us as South Africans and this kind of uselessness is costing us big time
Maybe SARS should first figure out how to Tax Zuma and then move forward from there.
This country has such huge potential...so sad that we are not even able to realise 10% of that.
There’s no accountability and nothing will be done.
Another issue that's not being addressed is the problem the unions create at the ports protecting non performing employees and management can do nothing about it.
Major! our failed state employees enjoying guaranteed salaries for not delivering . You see them driving beautiful cars living in lovely suburbs ...until...
Get rid of Pravin Gordan and Gwede .... this country will have 10% growth year on year
Won't help. Need to get rid of the cANCer.
100% agreed
Everyone in the ANC needs to be kicked out
Get rid of Marxism->Socialism->Dictatorship... ANC->EFF->Chaos
Somehow i feel like Pravin is potentially the best they have but Gwede is a known headache for the anc itself
Another triumphant ANC stuff up !
Well done South Africa, Mandela would be proud!
He had no objections to the way the ANC were managing the country when corruption started in the mid 2000's.
I doubt anyone will be surprised by this
Ramaphosa will be 😂😂
You have The ANC, Jacob Zuma and The Gupta Family to blame for this. Transnet’s funds are in Dubai and Moscow.
Blame Cyril ramaphosa and Pravin gordhan for failing to govern this country properly
I Blame apartheid
@Jay-rd3hn of course you do.
Apartheid didn't make our government corrupt greed did. Stop using the victim card as an excuse to destroy our nation!
@jay... Just pour another 🥃it may just help you.
I Live on the bluff in Durban and the problem extends far beyond just the port and the people that work for it,
In our area we are battling with unexperienced truck drivers that find a loop hole in the system and go from driving Taxi's to 18t+ trucks! They don't understand that they themselves need to create order so the port can process them quicker.
It doesn't help when the only roads into the port are been parked closed by trucks for weeks on end.
i want to be part of this business so bad .........its so is crazy to think a country can sabotage itself like this, the potential in south africa its beyond imagination.
Why fix these problems? Even if these harbours were world class, none of the extra income will make it past the top 0000.1 percent. The hungry hippos at the top forgot those who got them there.
Obviously another SOE with ANC tentacles of inefficiency all over it...
.
when I worked in the docks 1993 we had to much ships coming in from then on it just declined thanks to the anc
can we apply these same morals we took to the ICJ and apply internally!!!!!!
Can we all please Vote the ANC out in the upcoming elections?? I beg each n every one of us...This country is slowing turning into a Failed state
Too late...it`s already a failed state...
Poor management of South African resources😢
What a missed opportunity again! An opportunity on increased employment and economic growth
Terrorists are of no use to the world
And let's face facts; the ANC are, and always have been, a terrorist organisation.
This is going according to the anc plan for SA. Any moans will be addressed before the election as short term whissy washy issues.
They don't care about feeding the nation, service delivery, balancing the fiscus, unemployment, solving crime, poverty + unemployment or growing the economy - because without problem solving skills, they are the problem.
BEE have them in the pound seats + they have no plans whatsoever to vacate those lucrative seats.
With a 1/3rd of the uneducated electorate on welfare theyre confident about either winning the election or if not, to revert back to their only other experience - the reign of terror.
I have a feeling that SA might be funding the houtis 😂😂
Not farfetched at all!!!
The money set aside for them would probably be looted by corruption before reaching them lol
tell me one thing that still works in this country? nothing can surprise us coz we know that nothing is ever done or maintained.
ANC has dismally failed south africa
We had so much faith in the black government after 1994. It’s all gone and so has our beloved country.
Yes it is tragic. Clearly Nelson Mandela was a fraud.
It has nothing to do with the colour of the people in rule. The white government was also extremely corrupt so what now?
Thank you for your reporting. However, preaching to the converted will not solve the issues reported on. We need a government change where ANC is removed and replaced by the Multi Party Charter. They obviously not perfect but surely should be much better than what the ANC can give us.
If they just pitched up at work, had lunch and went home, they would still be better than the ANC.
ANC screws up everything it touches.
I do not recognize the country i am living in anymore. Criminality prevails.
ANC knows how to operate in the stone age.VIVA ANC
Of course the country is squandering this opportunity
Where's the minister responsible for transnet??
Are we still surprised?
Keep passing by guys!!!!
We always come first when it’s about being last thanks to anc.
Pity the release of hostages was not mentioned Prof 😢
There were more ships than fish in the ocean 😅😊😂
".... Transnet is not managed very well.."! I put it to you, that the company is not managed at a mediocre level. And unfortunately such is the state of the country as a whole under 30 years of the ANC! VOTE THEM OUT!
What is functional in SA today ? this country is sinking, isn't it ?
Namibia welcomes the business,we are equiped and ready for such operations even though there are corruption 😂😂
EVERY SECTOR IN S.A HAS FAILED HORRIBLY.
Dirtbin the mampara province being useless again.
Is there a thing that still works in south Africa 🤔
Nothing works in SA anymore.
Well said Prof👌
I love Carte Blanche!! 👏♥️
There were numerous people who are innovators - who designed, patterned and created free electricity for low income and poor housing and higher up.
There have been numerous alternatives for free electricity to be supplied to the whole of SA. Find a different way to get tax and just settle with new ideas that benefits the people of South Africa.
Build town homes for people living in squatter camps for all people of all ethnic backgrounds. Provide free electricity and community gardens to self care, feed. Drill wells in v various areas of smaller locations of each sector and each sect will be responsible for caring for their gardens, water. Charge a small amount of tax.
There are not many services required for the rerouting vessels around the Cape. Even shipping lines that do call our ports have very few service needs and almost nothing is purchased in South Africa anymore.
The chandling companies have slowly disappeared.
Most if not all ships are stored within the EU with no benefit to South African companies. Maybe there are benefits in doing business that way.
The ports problems affect businesses which has a knock on effect right down the line to the farm and factory workers. How did it get so bad that maintenance of the equipment used in the stacks as well as gantry cranes has not been done.
We no longer have a South Africa shipping line. Safmarine is long gone.
I am not an expert in any of these areas, like shipping, economy, or politics. But I can see a massive error in all these sectors , if it isn't rectified soon , then the world is going into anarchy this decade.
BEE, affrimative action and cadre deployment are one aspect. The other issue is that Durban reached its capacity in the 1980's, with the infrastructure that was in place. Since then there has been no development in infrastructure except deepening and widening the entrance channel to handle bigger container ships. Durban port may be physically large but the container terminal is small and in a poor location with regards to access by road and rail. The old airport site is the perfect place to build a new port
An incompatible cultural mindset for working processes and structures.
SA is a joke!
Idiots running the asylum.
This reporting is very poor. Nearly 20mins of diagnosing Transnet's problems and NOT a single mention of the supervising minister nor the President?
What has happened to Carte Blanche??
Such a amazing country with so much to offer but yet being so limited, instead off people hating on each other why not unite for the common goal of resolving domestic problems and building great relationships with other countries to secure trade, work on rentention, its not to late to change the dynamic! Pride should be put aside.
Nothing is running smooth. Transnet, Eskom, Prasa, SAA, PetroSA and many more...We need a new Government Anc failed us.😢
We on the blink, off giving upp.that is a sad reality
Another Eskom and SAA😮
Everything in this country is failing.
Another PROCESS that the ANC hasn’t completed yet. Give them a chance to complete it! ????
How much longer maybe another 30 yrs, Ya no don't think so hahah
#voteouttheanc #stoptheeff Let's build a loving nation free of corruption!!!!!!!!
Great presenter ❤️
At the end of it all, it all comes round!
Nothing works in South Africa 😢
another 4years back for southern africa as a whole
ANC = sorry we are uselss. Come now SA! Vote for competent people!
what happened to the episode about Transnet ports? Why did you take it down?
So this is why my parcel is taking 5 months to deliver..
If yall vote for ANC idk😂😂😂I'll know the problem is the people not them
Teansnet 😂😂. It can't service its current customers and it's destroying South African business.
Wow Wow
The end is near now.
Privatise everything in this country.
You make it sound like the poor shipping lines are struggling due to the delays at the ports. You don't mention anything about them just hiking their charges, passing it onto the importers. Who is also suffering from delays on imports while the shipping lines still make the same money by just raising the costs and extra charges per container? Interesting view you took to look at it from the poor shipping lines. Piracy is something different I agree. But also just raising the shipping costs per container.
Get rid of the ANC and automate the ports take away the red tape
Prof , when is Hamas going to be condemned for the October 7 th attack ? And what has happened to the hostages?? Swept 🧹 under the carpet ?
just give it back to the boere...
Hi much respect to your guys in the media, u must interview me becos I was in the shipping industry since 1968 and I don't know where u guys was in this country, don't interview the big boys , interview people like me 70 now
Problems problems pro lems, I lay it before the anc door, as expected
ANC cadre deployment 😢😢
With our Jozi Gold rush, minerals and beautiful landscapes. We were supposed to be 10 times more beautiful and rich than Dubai and most of the countries in the world.
Apartheid destroyed us and ANC completed the task.
'We recovered'😂😂😂😂what a clown
after solving harbor, fix the train transport
VW T-Cross is a lazy car even with all cour wheels attached, I'm glad you guys did the test on it.😅😅😅
Please investigate the rising e coli levels in Durban harbor and Beaches caused by raw sewerage flowing into Durban harbor. A Well established Commercial Diving Business had to close down because the polluted harbor the e coli level in the seawater was to dangerous to train and work in keep these videos coming 👌
Everything is going downhill!
More problems less to no solutions
The MEANING of USELESS=ANC
We have the opportunities, and we do have competent people why cant we get rid of corruption and incompetent people? We can be so much more and due to idiots that want to hold on to the gravy train and those letting them do it we going down the drain!
Nothing works in SA
This whole country is a momeish
Always doing something, but nothing is happening for a long long time now.
Bring back 1990 minus apartheid.
@@thabisomngadi366 Was that a time before the Bantu came to RSA and murdered the indigenous people and stole the land?
Ever since they set foot in this country they have tried to destroy it! Just look at the ANC, EFF, etc, they completely prove my point.
Why is the focus on dbn port and not cpt port? Isn't where they dock?
ANC 💔
That turned political quickly
Cadre deployment at work.
No surprise. Useless. Bungling absolute uselessness.
