War is brewing in the Red Sea as Yemen’s Houthi rebel forces launch attacks on commercial ships in protest against Israel’s war on Gaza. For multinational companies trading and shipping between Asia and Europe, the Suez Canal has now become a high-risk zone. This hostile disruption in world trade has created an opportunity for South Africa to boost its own flagging economy by offering services to ships re-routed past the Cape. It is an extraordinary detour, with hundreds of ships sailing for an extra 10 to 14 days to ensure safe passage through calmer African waters. But these ships appear to be giving South Africa a wide berth, preferring more efficient refuelling stops in Namibia and Mozambique. Why was Transnet so ill-prepared to take advantage of this potential economic windfall?

Global shipping is subjected to pirates at sea and SA is subjected to pirates in office.
Global shipping is place where it needs to choose between the lesser of the two evils.
I remember Derrick did a piece on the Port in Port Elizabeth a year or two ago when it come under new management and Derrick highlighted the maintenance. The new manager said to Derrick to come back in a years time to follow up and that progress would have been made, I wonder how that is holding up?

I Live on the bluff in Durban and the problem extends far beyond just the port and the people that work for it,
In our area we are battling with unexperienced truck drivers that find a loop hole in the system and go from driving Taxi's to 18t+ trucks! They don't understand that they themselves need to create order so the port can process them quicker.
It doesn't help when the only roads into the port are been parked closed by trucks for weeks on end.

This is going according to the anc plan for SA. Any moans will be addressed before the election as short term whissy washy issues.
They don't care about feeding the nation, service delivery, balancing the fiscus, unemployment, solving crime, poverty + unemployment or growing the economy - because without problem solving skills, they are the problem.
BEE have them in the pound seats + they have no plans whatsoever to vacate those lucrative seats.
With a 1/3rd of the uneducated electorate on welfare theyre confident about either winning the election or if not, to revert back to their only other experience - the reign of terror.

There were numerous people who are innovators - who designed, patterned and created free electricity for low income and poor housing and higher up.
There have been numerous alternatives for free electricity to be supplied to the whole of SA. Find a different way to get tax and just settle with new ideas that benefits the people of South Africa.
Build town homes for people living in squatter camps for all people of all ethnic backgrounds. Provide free electricity and community gardens to self care, feed. Drill wells in v various areas of smaller locations of each sector and each sect will be responsible for caring for their gardens, water. Charge a small amount of tax.

There are not many services required for the rerouting vessels around the Cape. Even shipping lines that do call our ports have very few service needs and almost nothing is purchased in South Africa anymore.
The chandling companies have slowly disappeared.
Most if not all ships are stored within the EU with no benefit to South African companies. Maybe there are benefits in doing business that way.
The ports problems affect businesses which has a knock on effect right down the line to the farm and factory workers. How did it get so bad that maintenance of the equipment used in the stacks as well as gantry cranes has not been done.
We no longer have a South Africa shipping line. Safmarine is long gone.

BEE, affrimative action and cadre deployment are one aspect. The other issue is that Durban reached its capacity in the 1980's, with the infrastructure that was in place. Since then there has been no development in infrastructure except deepening and widening the entrance channel to handle bigger container ships. Durban port may be physically large but the container terminal is small and in a poor location with regards to access by road and rail. The old airport site is the perfect place to build a new port

You make it sound like the poor shipping lines are struggling due to the delays at the ports. You don't mention anything about them just hiking their charges, passing it onto the importers. Who is also suffering from delays on imports while the shipping lines still make the same money by just raising the costs and extra charges per container? Interesting view you took to look at it from the poor shipping lines. Piracy is something different I agree. But also just raising the shipping costs per container.

@@thabisomngadi366 Was that a time before the Bantu came to RSA and murdered the indigenous people and stole the land?
Ever since they set foot in this country they have tried to destroy it! Just look at the ANC, EFF, etc, they completely prove my point.
