I think I’m done backing games. I’m tired of these companies saying how much cheaper it is to buy it now and then find out the retail version is anywhere from $20-$40 cheaper. For me I’d rather just wait for the retail version, especially if I’m not sure if the game is going to be good.
Yeah but it really depends, if you're just trying to get the base game yeah you're doing it wrong. I'm backing aeons end descent because I want the play mats and those sell for too much secondhand. $69 isn't bad for the base game and two expansions but you get ripped off by shipping so really only worth it if you want to get mats, accessory packs, and promos that get a jacked up on prices after. Tldr only back a game if you're getting stuff besides base game because shipping kills any deal you think you're getting.
Yea if you don't care about crowdfunding exclusives then just wait for retail. CMON loves to make a ton of exclusives like in Marvel Zombies.
The increased shipping costs cancel out the discounts on many base pledges.
For me it has to give some serious upgrades
It depends on the game. I saved money backing Earthborne Rangers during the first campaign. I lost money because I didn’t back the first campaign of Oathsworn. It really depends on the game
Behsaad from Boardquest here: thanks for covering us and for anyone interested in our game we have a TTS and a Steam demo linked on our campaign page.
Boardquest is inspired by board games like Warchest or Mage Knight as well as video games like the HOMM series or Warcraft 3. We set out to create a unique blend of our favorite mechanics and we would love you to try it out for yourself!
I think this is Alex's friend, who just gave away a copy, th-cam.com/video/UouTmCZljPI/w-d-xo.html
Thanks so much for covering Forks. I really appreciate your insights.
So many interesting games in this bunch. I’m trying to exercise self-discipline and hopefully only back Forks.
"There will be mistakes, but at least there will be fewer mistakes than the first edition."
High praise. :)
I was very interested in Dante...until the price of the Core box (standees only!), followed by nearly being double to get the minis.
unlike Oathsworn (which came with minis for the player characters), Dante has zero minis without getting the 2nd tier.
@@michaeledmonds4849 That Oathsworn pledge was amazing value, and those mini's are great!
Yeah, I unfollowed Dante after launch because of the price and eta. Doubt it will deliver before 2026. 🤷♂️
Yeah, I was stoked pre campaign and I was expecting it to actually be more expensive, but when I really sat and looked at everything I decided to drop my pledge.
I wish the new street masters expansion listed everything included. Even it was just generic details like the number of fighters and enemies. Rolling out one new item each day really took the excitement out for me.
I am tempted to back Vampire. I met my wife while playing the vampire RPG...
I like smaller box campaigns because they are more affordable. And I like Indie campaigns because I’m more likely to back them. I’m glad someone mentioned Forks! (I don’t think it was me…😅)
I’m quite torn on Dante Inferno. I have concerns about the longevity and given there has only been one scenario seen by content creators (as far as I am aware) I worry it’ll be a bit repetitive. Don’t get wrong, some mechanics seem fun and unique but not wonderful at the cost of/ value. I can’t see it being good value, but it could be that I don’t have the cash to throw about on endless games and have to consider things more. Am I missing something or just plain wrong?
Dante has really turned me off with the high price tag for few minis plus that shipping is eye popping. I don’t blame them for the shipping, it’s becoming a huge hindrance for me backing crowdfunding now. Just not tenable.
I never really encountered Street masters, which is probably a good thing, regarding the blacklist fiasco. but now, after trying it due to the app, i will most likely get the all in. While i definitely don't need everything, mist boxes contain some stuff that i want 😅
0:27 LOL 😂
56 minute video!!!!
X-23 is in the movie Logan. She is the female wolverine.
Yep, she was created using Logan's DNA
@Gamebent1 Yeah I was trying not to spoil if people didn't know.
Also, Marvel Champions already has an X-23 hero pack, so she's definitely already in the Marvel Universe.
Vampire the Masquerade's new digital edition sells me on it, for narrative games digital integration is the way to go
In currently for Core with D Inferno bypassing minis. Thought about the extra characters but reality - they’ll ever leave the box.
31:10 - Still waiting on you to do Watch This or That: Armaggedon vs. Deep Impact
I’m a huge fan of Oathsworn, so it’s neat to hear - how does game x compare to Oathsworn?
was keen for blackrose wars but money was an issue when it first came out, but now I'm in a better place, Im just hitting up my local store for the base and apocalypse as that will be so much more then what Ill ever need for this game.
Glad you're in a better place!
i literally just had squirrel food delivered for a friend who's visiting, who smokes. I might have to send it back lol.
I wonder if Ludus Magnus Studio's is using the selling of the extra copies at a higher price point to actually pay the shipping for backers of the original campaigns.
As one of the backers of the original campaign I wonder the same thing
Blacklist still exists and is working on Lasting Tales yet.
so many RPG's... not enough days of the year to play them all.
And board games and books and movies and TV shows etc etc 🙂
i know this is (potentially) a dumb question but how does payment work for these crowdfunding type campaigns I've seen a few things i want to buy recently but a few special circumstances might make it hard not knowing when ill be charged etc. the shipping delay isn't a problem but yeah thought I'd ask people that likely know more than me😁
Seeing a project partnering with LaunchBoom is a red flag for me. Typically they push the $1 pre-order. And I don’t want a portion of my pledge going to a marketing company that doesn’t care about me as a backer.
Inferno is looking good at the very base level, anything more seems a bit of a waste. I have not been into mini's for years now so very happy to have a non miniature version available. I have never played any campaign game more than once, and most less. Thank you for the great advice in skipping the extras. Currently backing base + Foreteller narration at 10 x $16CAD monthly installments.
What do you use the WD40 that's behind you for Alex? I can't think of a single game where I'd need to use that :) Another great set of reviews btw thanks
My chair squeaks :)
Female Wolverine was in Logan, and is a clone version and has been around for 10+ years
Both Dante and Street Masters look promising, but I'm on the fence for them both.
Inferno is just the type of theme I love in a game, and I prefer euro's, so that's the only interesting one last week.
This week though has a few bangers: FLOE, Ostia Pirates, and Thunder Road Vendetta: Carnival of Chaos.
I sure hope Blacklist Games still exist, I'm waiting for Lasting Tales to be delivered. Of course, at this point it's not very probable. After all, Sadler "we were just regular employes and didn't even know who we were working for" brothers are now a part of the Steamforged Street Masters...
That Deep Rock Galactic big box on the shelf puts a smile on my face - I enjoy that funn "little" board game with my friends very much :)
Examples of The movies coming out at the same time… I’ll go first: Armageddon and Deep Impact! They are so damn similar.
Female wolverine?! That's X23, she was in Logan as a child.
Regarding the art for Boardquest, it looks like a nod to old-school D&D.
Not wanting to be crazy but why does it matter if any board game holds it price? Surely this is a zero factor if to back or not back a game! You back a game because you want to play it not because it maybe worth something on the second hand market. In-fact, I'd expect most board games on the secondhand market to have a less value when selling pre-used.
Female Wolverine = X23. She's been around awhile including in the Logan movie.
Looking at the past few "to back or not to back" videos, you never covered Altered TCG.
Is there a reason?
I did! A few weeks back
@@BoardGameCo only found it mentioned in the "upcoming campaigns" shortly.
Hmmm
3:39 of the Feb 12 To Back or Not to Back
@@garytheosophilus thanks, I did not find it because it doesn't have a chapter ...
TCGs, RPGs, tables, and accessories are often (always?) covered under Board Game Adjacent.
X-23 is basically female wolverine already
I've seen the content of Black Rose wars for 2/3 of the price of the new campaign on the second hand market 250-300 for the same stuff. So no real reason to back there.
you've seen rebirth for sale or the original BRW?
@@db8094 Rebirth
@@db8094 The second Black Rose Wars Rebirth.
it wasn't until i saw your last name written down somewhere that i worked out what you're saying. you talk so fast, Alex.
Squirrel tastes better.
Nothing interests me this week, I looked into both Inferno games as I like the theme but the gameplay of neither is compelling.
Loved the joke :)
Kingfire Chronicles: 1$ early access. Is this the new FOMO tendency now?
Sadly yes
Street masters is fun but I wish they went with colorful standees instead of minis. Monster minis can be identified by their unique shapes but when most of your minis are just variations of very fit, grey humans they're kind of hard to differentiate from each other at that scale.
I laugh at the "not getting your game for a year, year and a half." It's more like 2-3 years for a crowd funded game.
Is it just FOMO that drives you to gamble so much money away dear reader?
There are hundreds of games out that you haven’t even HEARD of that you can find at least ONE review of to AT LEAST have an idea of what you are getting into, but you’d rather pay far more to get something a year or two from now?
Why? I am actually curious.
Please, stop backing kickstarter games, for you own sake.
Get an old kickstarter game. One that is out. Then get its KS exclusives from ebay or whatever.
Chances are, you aren’t made of money and the latter suggestion I just did will probably bring you far more enjoyment.
Depends entirely on the Kickstarter. I didn’t do the marvel zombies kickstarter and I’m buying things piecemeal. I would have saved money and gotten more I did the kickstarter. It entirely depends on what the kickstarter is and how well you know yourself. You need to balance the fear of missing out with what you actually want. And understanding what you will actually play with in the game and what will actually affect gameplay. Sometimes kickstarting gives you nothing. Sometimes, it gives you a lot. And some companies certainly give you more than others.
many reasons to back a particular Kickstarter. support the company, a good campaign, etc.
My main reasons to back a game are most of the time availability, extras and price (though prices have risen drastically recent years, so retail might be the best option now).
Unfortunately I live in a small and remote country, so it's never certain for a crowdfunded game hitting retail anywhere near me. Same goes for the availability of hunting for the game or extras later on, especially if the game didn't have a lot of backers so there's not many second hand copies around. And sometimes you just know you want those deluxe bits if you're gonna get the game.
But I have stopped backing for the most part, unless something really grabs my interest.
