Saw Earl in a concert in College Station Texas. He signed pictures after it was over, asked me my name. I said just sign it " What I'd Say". He looked at me with a knowing look and signed it just as I asked. In the 1980s George Strait had 18 number one hits. ETC had 18 number one hits.
18 number 1 hit songs! He didn't leave the military until age 27. Wrote hit songs "Smokey Mountain Memories" (Mel Street), " I've Hurt Her More Than She Loves Me" (Conway Twitty). First #1 hit at age 35 ! And then to have 17 more #1's after the age of 35 is impossible. We'll never see that again in our lifetime. The Academy of Country Music should be ashamed of themselves. Maybe his friends Blake Shelton and Brad Paisley can show them the error of their ways. I thank God for Earl Thomas Conley and his music. I've been a fan the whole time.
I had the pleasure to hang out with earl in the early 90's in a little place called Patricks Pub in Chillicothe Ohio I was a roady for a concert there the next day .He was such a nice man I walked up and said hi the next thing I knew I was sitting right next to him at his table at the time I was maybe 20 or 21 but he disnt treat my like some young kid . He treated me like I was his friend . I was asking him how to get my foot in the door in the music business he told me to stop by his bus the next day and he would give me his card . He wanted to give me a job selling t shirts to help me get to know people in the business. He told me to call the following January and I would start on the next tour unfortunately I was never able to get a hold of anyone looking back I should've never given up.
He was one of the biggest stars of the 1980's country radio. 18 #1 songs and 25 top 10's and sadly he's mostly forgotten today. This was my favorite song of his.
Man, what a voice. So sad to hear of his passing. They sure don't make them like ETC anymore. This, my friends, was the pinnacle era of country music. Murder sure was committed on Music Row.
Sigh ... Earl Thomas Conley, your songs came through the speakers in my trucks for years and went straight to the heart, plucking at my heartstrings as mile after mile slipped by. Thank you, fellow Ohioan! I knew you only through your songs and voice but am forever indebted to you for leaving such an important and poignant part of yourself behind for so many of us to thrill to and be amazed by. Heaven has surely swaddled you with the greatest joy and love since you returned Home!
Years back during the compact disc era I would play Earl Thomas Conley's music quite often. It was a album called ''The essential Earl Thomas Conley'' and many people would hear this music playing and they would ask me who that was singing. Everyone of these people had never heard of Earl and they were very impressed by his music. These were people who never listened to country in their life and never realized how many overlooked artists they never bothered to hear. Other singers that people were floored by and I heard me listening to were Steve Wariner, Keith Whitley and Mark Gray.
Soooo underrated. Amazing voice, humble man, real country. I hope he enjoyed his time in the spotlight as I think he really flew under the radar as an artist. Thank you, ETC.
Had him play my night club in El Paso twice!! What a great guy!! I remember going out yo his old bus and he literally has a wood cut out of the RCA logo wired to the front of it!!
This song right here...masterpiece. ETC was pure country coul. I have all of his albums and have been a fan for a long time. But this song, man. Whew. It cuts right to the bone.
Every time I hear that beautiful voice my heart hurts thinking he will never bring us anymore music. So sad. RIP to one of the best... I like the beard better :)
I miss the days when country music was full of heart and brains. But,I'm so glad I found this channel. This is why I became a country fan. Songs and artists like ETC never go out of style. Thanks for posting.
+sarahstacy81 Yep. These days were the last days when most songs , the lyrics had deep meaning. And the music emotionally complimented it. Now. The radio plays sensless bubblegum music. All forms. Rock, country. etc..........(lol etc. no pun intended)

"I love you and I hate you all at the same time" is THE best lyric ever in the history of a country music break up, love interest, song!
I heard this song through a particularly painful divorce. Man, it busted me all up inside!
Someone you can listen to all day. I always thought ETC didn't get the full recognition he deserved.
RIP ETC! One of the greatest underrated singers of country music.

What I'd Say
Earl Thomas Conley
Talkin to the mirror
Whisperin your name
Just like you were here, you'd think I was insane
I hold these conversations in the silence of my room
Rehearsing all the things id say should I run into you
How's it going might be what I'd say
You broke my heart you know
Or it looks like rain today
Or maybe god I missed you since you went away
Your lookin well
Or go to hell might be what I'd say
There's times I feel so angry I'd put my fist right through the wall
Then there's times I've come so close to giving you a call
I love you and I hate you all at the same time
I pray that you'll come back to me before I lose my mind
How's it going might be what I'd say
You broke my heart you know
Or it looks like rain today
Or maybe god I missed you since you went away
Your lookin well
Or go to hell might be what id say
Guess you'll have to wait until that day
To find out what I'd say
God I missed you since you went away
Your looking well
Or go to hell
Might be what I'd say
