Straight-forward explanations, very thorough, no nonsense, everything one needs and nothing you don't! This is why I like your videos so much! I can send them to my grandkids and others when I can't be there to show them personally how to do things - the right way.
I know what I’m doing when it comes to this stuff, but I still run by your videos before digging into anything on my truck, thanks man I appreciate you.
Awesome Paul.. you're helping a lot of folks out here !! Some folks dont know they can do these fluid changes until they see it's not terrible if you don't mind getting a little dirty. :- )
Always been paranoid to work on my own 4runner but this video definitely gave me the confidence I need to replace all my fluids! Thank you for showing us it’s really not that complicated 🤝🏽
Well done video! I just purchased '07 with 188k. Am replacing intermediate steering shaft, strut assembly, sway bar bushings, cv boots, and all fluids (no idea when any of these were serviced.) I believe your video is applicable to 4th gen. 4Runners and plan to use as reference. thank you for posting....will be looking for your other "Maintenance Tech Tips"...I can use them 😀, SM
Cool. I use the Mobil1 75w-90 synthetic. I do transfer case and rear diff service every 30k miles. My 2006 Toyota Matrix 4WD has 220,00 miles and runs perfect.
My 08 has 59k on it and I'm doing all three plus a drain n fill on the transmission and a coolant flush next week. Glad I picked the right mileage to do everything.
I'll never let so much rust to build up. And if my allen key starts slipping and the bolt doesn't rotate, i will stop, soak it with some penetrating oil, wire brush the rust, tap a bit on the bolt and then try again. I am thankful fir your effort to video the procedure, but that last bit was sloppy.
Purchased washers off the link people are telling me that they aren't safe because they are aftermarket and will leak have you used the ones you linked? Or only OEM.
Thank you for making and posting this video! I decided to try it this past weekend and I’m glad I did…. Transfer case looked good but oil in both differentials was definitely old and needed to be changed.
I like to use brake cleaner around the plugs before removal. Also, if you heat the front differential housing around the plugs with a torch they usually come right out.
I jersey guy. Im over here in PA and just bought a 05 4runner. Im new too the off road world but i know the pine barrons is a great place to go. Trying to find some 4x4 clubs that are local.
Thank you for the video. You have a real talent for making it look easy. Question: Do you recommend a break in oil change for the rear, transfer, and/or front differential and if so when?
@@VikingsGarage Thanks! I guess I have some work to do. I changed the motor oil at 1000, but now I’m at 2500. Probably will wait until 5000 when I do the next oil change. Good thing I have this video to reference. 👍
Thanks for the tip about the chisel and punch method. I suppose it works. I think I would have tried some penetrating oil first. Actually, since the front diff plugs are likely to be little tighter than the rear, start with the front. If the front doesn't want to move, penetrate oil them, then give it a few minutes soak in, while working on the back diff. If the penetrating oil doesn't work, then fall back on the chisel and punch. But that's just me. You do you.
9:17 ... this is likely THE MOST challenging area to do on your shoulder/neck/back with the wheel off for ease of access. 2o11 Tacoma similar setUp.. ? the rusty crusty is an issue or not? with those drain and fill plugs being so TIGHT? i busted up my left arm bad for months breaking those plugs free on gen2 Tacoma , top first and bottom was no clearance for long breaker like you used here. clean out the dirt and crud with a pick and penetrant before hammering the hex key into it, it might help a bit to prevent a stripper on that plug
@@VikingsGarage and yes! i did have to remove the driver wheel on that Gen2 Tacoma to even find where the fill plug in the front diff was located behind CV axle and above the LCA WHY did they not put that fill plug where it is on the Gen1 Tacoma, right up in the front area and not the side
@efil4kizum I hear you!! Simple answer: Because engineers don’t actually work on these vehicles nor do I think they care about us that do. Stay safe my friend!!
Thank you sir! This was perfect and looking forward to the propeller shaft torque checks and u joints zerk fittings greasing video coming! What grease and grease tool would you suggest?
What a wicked video! Never done any of this work in my life let alone I do not think its ever been done on my 06 4runner sport V8. ( 2 Previous owners) and I am at 243000km now. Need to do all of this and transmission service. Had a good laugh at the end of your transmission service video as I said that was good but didn't drop the pan and show all what I wanted to see that TOYOTA does not do at the dealership after just paying $244 CAD for them to do a drain and fill. Service manager said 7 or 8 L would have come out but every video I have watched shows roughly 3 quarts or 4L coming out only. They only charged for 4L on the sheet because he said its bulk and we are not going to charge for the continued amount.. ( still confused by that) One of the mechanics there is its about 4 L and someone in the parts department said ya it should be around 4 L so why would the service manager at Toyota tell me 7 or 8L came out? Very confusing. Like I said I have never done any of this before but I have watched about 10 videos on it now and including yours not one showed 7 or 8 coming out on a drain and fill lol Torque converter and the transmission cooler I believe is where the rest of the fluid stays in the system and why you have to repeat the drain and fill 3 to 5 times over a period of time to get to a happy purity back to red in color. Toyota only recommended this transmission service for my 2006 4th gen 4.7 L V8 at 96,000km but with 2 previous owners no idea if it was done or not. Toyota also does not say you need to drop pan / clean it / clean magnets / replace gasket just the drain and fill. If the system holds 12.2 L empty ( I asked) and only 4L came out the majority is dirty as heck still and not performing how it should. You did mention at the end of your one video after you thought about it unless you are towing (I am not) then you do not think you need to drop pan and do all that. That is good to know being that you are a Toyota mechanic. After watching all these videos I want to change everything to help with the lifespan of the vehicle. I would imagine all the torque specs are different on a 2006 4th gen 4.7 L V8 for transfer case, rear diff, front diff etc and dropping the pan all those bolts and drain and fill plug. Maybe I can buy a mechanics book from Toyota on the vehicle so I can have all those exact specs while performing. Very nice videos you made going over everything absolutely after to see coming from someone with zero mechanical experience in doing any of this. Super awesome content angles and tips and tricks displayed! Thank you for making these! That was a long rant hope it all made sense lol been so frustrated over this issue trying to get a clear cut answer from Toyota. One last thing when you dropped the pan in your one video and replaced gasket on fill plug and drain plug I swear one was rubber but then when you showed the picture of the gaskets they looked like normal washers. On my transmission drain and fill just performed at Toyota they do have marked down 2 gaskets which I would imagine is them. you said if the one is in good condition do not have to replace. Maybe it is different on your brand new looking for runner than my old one. Guess I will find out. Thanks again great job!!!
Hey Paul love the videos man! I have a question for you. Do you make sure the car is on a level surface from the frame? I know you have your lift but for us doing it at home we have our drive way and we have to take into account the cars rake. What’s your advice?
People are saying you need a specific fluid for the transfer case or you can damage or wear out the parts. Redline GL-4 ,Royal Purple, or Toyota fluid because of the special additives. I used the Valvoline in a bag you recommended, should I change it to one of these?
Excellent video man. Thanks a lot! So can you use the valvoline 75W-90 oil for all 3? The front diff, rear diff, and transfer case? Was going to just get enough of the squeeze bags for all 3
Great video as always! I have a 2020 and 2022 SR5P with very low mileage, would it help if I spray Wd40 or other type lube on that drain bolt to prevent that rusted bolt? Keep up the great videos! thank you.

I think the flat side of the crush washer should sit against the bolt head rather than against the differential housing. But I've seen differing opinions about this. What do you think?
Alright, I have a stupid question. Do you need/want the oil to be warm/hot? I'm used to doing the engine oil and do that warm but I am not sure on the diffs and transfer case if it matters? thanks!

Thanks again!
Hey Paul, so it is ok to use the same oil for the diff and the transfer case? I picked up the Valvoline 75-90 pouches, just want to make sure, thank you brother.
Thank you so much for this video. I am ready to do my 60k service. Besides oil, front/rear diff and transfer case fluid, is there anything else you suggest besides what’s in the service manual?
I changed my rear fluid at 32Kmiles, and it was pretty grey honestly(and the magnet had quite a bit on it) I bought the 5th gen with 6Kmiles And i am a gentle driver. I have a toyota with manual trans which i also chg every 30K I have not done the transfer or front diff yet. Still trying to sew what most folks go with for their xfer case fluid
I did the math today and I've literally saved over $700 from following your videos for service. Especially with the 30k interval, it is a "big one" as we know. if we ever cross paths, I'll buy you a beer or coffee or whatever lol 🫡
I need to change the fluid in the rear diff of my '05 SR5 V6. I have lower back issues, so getting underneath my truck without jacking it up a bit is very difficult. I see you are recommending that the truck remain level for this service and I understand the reason. But since I know the quantity required for fill, do you still suggest that I not jack the truck up a bit using my hydraulic jack? I should first try to open the fill plug first, correct? I am going to use Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90. Thank you!
@@VikingsGarage I want to change my front diff oil in my driveway. The crossbar is behind the skid plate. The schematics indicate it’s a lift point so I can then put the jack stands at the frame. My question is, is the factory skid plate reinforced at the cross bar for lifting with a hydraulic Jack?
I have 2016 4runner rear wheel drive. I am trying to do diff fluid, does the fluid need to be limited slip additive? Fluid i am using is 75W-90 GL5( no have limited slip additive) thanks
This is a great example of why you can’t even trust the dealership anymore. When you get dealership service, you expect them to, at the very least, use the correct fluids.

Great video! I have a question though, is 75W85 better than REDLINE MT-LV for the transfer case? I guess I wasn’t sure if those 2 were compatible
Im not familiar with the red line product. But 75W85 is the correct gear oil to get.
Can you mix the waste diff oil with engine oil when recycling?
Correct!!
@@VikingsGarage thanks! i always wonder what i can mix together and no have a bad chemical reaction or something 😂 i have a 5 gallon container i save up for used oils and dump it in our city waste hazardous collection location.
👍🏻
did you use same oil on transfer case as you did with differentials? someone said to use mtlv70w/75w GL4 on transfer case.
It’s up to you, either way you’ll be fine.
Beijinhos 😘❤️ Nice Job fantástico 👏👏 👏 💪💪
😘
WOOOHOOOO! Nice job man! Thank you again! I know you are selling your 4R so lets just say you need another 4R to do more of these videos, I am volunteering my SR5 5th gen 😉 I live close by in Wash township so thats not a worry, It is for the community that I offer this up... 😂😂😂😂 Love your content brother! Thanks again!
Lol, you got it!
Stay tuned, the new ride will blow your socks off. 😉
@@VikingsGarage 😂😂 brother I got to say, you have mastered the art of the cliffhanger I can't wait to see it!
😜😎 I will not disappoint!!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!!
@@VikingsGarage if it's a Jeep we're breaking up ; )
I wouldn’t blame you 🤣🤣
Hey Paul, so it is ok to use the same oil for the diff and the transfer case? I picked up the Valvoline 75-90 pouches, just want to make sure, thank you brother.
It sure is. 👏🏻
I just got the Toyota 75W fluid. Do yall use these cans at the dealership? Curious how to get into the can without contamination issues.
You can always suck it out with these big syringe type pumps. Super easy.
Harbor freight has them cheap. 😉
Please do Toyota Highlander Hybrid too! (2011 or later)
I’ll keep it in mind! I appreciate your feedback
Thank you so much for this video. I am ready to do my 60k service. Besides oil, front/rear diff and transfer case fluid, is there anything else you suggest besides what’s in the service manual?
very good , if you haven’t done it yet flush your brake fluid and lubricate the drive shafts. 👍🏻
@@VikingsGarage thank you for your help!
👍🏻
How many miles do you go before changing your differential fluids?
I do cover that in the video, I change it every 30,000 miles.
What size torque wrench do you recommend? Great videos.
3/8 is the one I use, but as long as the torque spec is correct… use whatever torque wrench you have.
I changed my rear fluid at 32Kmiles, and it was pretty grey honestly(and the magnet had quite a bit on it)
I bought the 5th gen with 6Kmiles
And i am a gentle driver.
I have a toyota with manual trans which i also chg every 30K
I have not done the transfer or front diff yet. Still trying to sew what most folks go with for their xfer case fluid
👍🏻
Is it not a good idea to use anti-seize on those plugs, just a little bit.
Anti-seize Is always a good procedure where possible. I personally never seen the need to apply it there. Specially on that from diff. Drain one 😉
I did the math today and I've literally saved over $700 from following your videos for service. Especially with the 30k interval, it is a "big one" as we know. if we ever cross paths, I'll buy you a beer or coffee or whatever lol 🫡
Absolutely!! 😉
Good old German Spec OF Good N Tight
😉
Love your videos, but I thought with torque wrenches you stop at the first "click".
Thank you!
Always do open the fill plug first, for the obvious reasons. If jacking it up helps, by all means. As long as you get it done.👍🏻
@@VikingsGarage Thanks! What is your opinion on Amsoil products?
@hisroyalfurrinesschewbacca6757 Some of the best in the industry if not the best.
@@VikingsGarage Whew! Thank you!
@@VikingsGarage I forgot to ask... what are the torque specs to tighten the fill and drain plugs for an '05 SR5 V6?
Wow Good Job Filho 💪👍
Obrigado mãe!!
I have an 07 4runner. So 75/90 for both front and read diff and also the TC, correct?
Yes Sir!!
Been doing it that way for 13 years, zero issues. 😉
Thank you so much. Love the videos
🙏🏻
Do I need to remove the front skid plate for the center lift point? Or, is it reinforced? TIA.
??
@@VikingsGarage I want to change my front diff oil in my driveway. The crossbar is behind the skid plate. The schematics indicate it’s a lift point so I can then put the jack stands at the frame. My question is, is the factory skid plate reinforced at the cross bar for lifting with a hydraulic Jack?
I wouldn’t try it, never lifted a 4Runner from there.
Ayut nice job bubs
I have 2016 4runner rear wheel drive. I am trying to do diff fluid, does the fluid need to be limited slip additive? Fluid i am using is 75W-90 GL5( no have limited slip additive) thanks
You’ll be fine with what you got. 👍🏻
What's your opinion on using Pennzoil Platinum Ultra engine oil for 2016 4runner SR5 2WD in Houston, Texas?
Never used it, so I’m not in a position to recommend it. I personally favor either Mobil1 or Amsoil, whichever one I find first.
@@VikingsGarage which Mobil 1 would you recommend to be used on 2016 4runner
@youssbaraki whichever one suits your needs.
Is this the same on the limited?
Just about the same, only difference is that you can’t spin the front drive shaft freely, to aim the zerk Fittings
How much do you charge for this service normally?
About $80 each I believe…. It’s probably more.
There's Gutentight and then there is Bobby Hill form King of the Hill torque specs. T = tight, RT = real tight.
💪🏻
What oil in the transfer case
Isn't the transfer case oil different differential gear oil?
It sure comes in a different container.
FYI: torque is measured in pound-feet, not foot-pounds. The metric version is newton-meters or Nm.
I know that!!
This is a great example of why you can’t even trust the dealership anymore. When you get dealership service, you expect them to, at the very least, use the correct fluids.
Im sorry to be the one to break it to you. I’m here just trying to keep it real and honest.
I appreciate you watching!!
❤
🙏🏻
You need to check the song ‘Viking’ by Los Lobos. That’s my solid to you.
I sure will, 🤘🏻
👍👍👍
👍🏻
👍
uhmm you put the wrong crush washer on the rear diff
