If anyone watching this decides to actually try to build one of these for the love of whoever you pray to DO NOT USE ALUMINUM TUBING! Yeah it'll be extremely light weight but if you have any kind of accident over 30mph you will probably die. Use steel or if you're rich maybe titanium and build a proper cage, use 5 point harnesses, and protection around any occupants. The weight savings aren't worth your life.
We forgot to mention the VW beetle based Dune Buggy. They’ve been around for a while 👍. I swapped an EJ25 Subaru engine in and it’s curb weight is 1450 lbs and rated at 165 hp. Fun times!
Should put the ej257 in it. 300hp stock. I ran my stock STI motor at 400whp with a rotated 30r for ~60k miles before motor spun bearing, and only did because of a bad 110 leaded oct. Tune running 460whp. Also had a 506whp c16 map on stock motor which ran 10.96@126.

My choice would be the DF Goblin, more weight on the rear tires with the engine in the back, little custom work & it could be a wonderful daily troller 😛
If you want to beat super cars on a budget get a used sport bike. Run 10s or lower on a stock 1000cc bike. 170+ hp in a vehicle that weighs less than 500lbs does wonders
I had a Polaris Slingshot and it definitely had a similar feel to what I imagine an exo would be like. It was 1600 lbs, had a 4 cylinder GM engine in the front, and 0-60 of around 4secs. It was some of the most fun I ever had driving that thing around and for 15k it was one of the best decisions I made in my youth lol
@@DuhReason Goblins are awesome kits and I've seen some wild ones for sure. But given that there are bolt in LX swap kits for Miata, and Exocet is also "bolt on" using a Miata donor, then most v8 Miata kits become v8 Exocet kits...which puts it above the goblin in my book. Exo even makes panel kits for Exocet, which gives them more aero for top end and down force for track days. Really doesn't get much better for a budget racer
Colin Chapman, I restored a boat he designed many years ago (I think in the70's I think) the designed 2 very expensive boats, the one I used to own was the top of the range "Marauder", it was a 47' boat (+- 13-14 meter) and the hull was designed to ride out of the water at speeds and it was tested doing 56 knots with the right power pack. We gave it 2 X 590 Hp, Cummins Diesels with a set of Arneston surface piercers. At the time the Spanish and Italian Navies had the high speed interceptors that was the fastest in the Mediterranean but I was guaranteed there will be very view boats that would outrun the Maruader over 1200 Miles, +- 2000 Km, and by then the Maruader would have cleared the Strait of Gibraltar well in open water and next refuel Casablanca and then off to Tenerife, GONE!. Our tanks carried 4000 Lt. What a beautiful machine, Colin Designed the boat for a market 30 years into the future, He also designed the Lotus as a racing team. One last thing about the Marauder, the hull design and built was very futuristic at the time, Vacuum injection fiber glass, honey comb and another fibre glass inner liner, about 40mm thick, so a crack had to go through the outer layer, through the honey comb center and fiber glass inner, so extremely tough but light and could take a massive blow before it needs repairs. We sold the boat to a person in the UK before emigrating to Australia 15 years ago, we have lost contact with the new owner. If he reads this, please reply as far as we know that is the only Maruader left in the UK, there was a Guy who had the plugs for both the hull and the top.
Some of us have ridden motorcycles in all weather -- I did two years as a courier in Seattle, and only missed one day for weather because there was glare ice on my street and I figured the chances of getting the bike out without smashing anything were near zero -- but don't like the weather going up our sleeves and down our necks. Seems like one of these with a roof panel and windshield left intact might solve much of the issue with weather, gain a smidgen on aerodynamics, and potentially be more fun to drive. I'd accept a hundred pounds of weight penalty to keep the rain off. This look like they have the potential to perform like a T-Rex and cost half as much. ;)
Yeah, it seems like it wouldn't be that much of a leap to just design a few detachable carbon fiber panels. It doesn't need to be hermetically sealed or anything, just enough to keep "normal" rain out.
That Caterham Super 7 is still something I 'd love to have, near the top of list honestly. Lowering weight improves everything at the same time. Acceleration, handling, braking, wear&tear, fuel economy, etc. Btw they make an exo kit for the Chevy ecotec too, I think it's based on the Colbalt SS drivetrain. It all gets put in the back for rear engine rear wheel drive.
mid-engine rear, actually, engine typically sits just forward of the front axle in the cobalt and 80~90+% of other front/front cars.. some makes have done a factory mid/rear car using the engine/trans from a front/front car..
The cobalt one is called the df goblin, you can get it for the ss or the base model cobalt. I was looking into building that or the exocet because of price.... sadly my job would have sent me to Germany so I ended up getting a different car, and then they didn't send me to Germany lol
@@niteriderevo9179 I'm just glad to see weird kit cars and conversions again. Back in the day they had a RWD small block V-8 conversion for the first gen Ford Focus hatch. It's amazing how well a v-8 just sat right in there. The trans tunnel is a different story.
@@riothero313 yes, i could see that, considering more often than not, inline 4 is pretty much a similar length to a v8.. and with more than a few early 2k front/front cars, the engine bay could cram a v8 in a front engine/rear drive layout, though many didn't really have a trans-tunnel to speak of, if at all
XF Motorsport has an amazing one they've made from an AMG S-Class Mercedes, it looks pretty wild, and fun, and built with balance in mind too. And I think maybe Cleetus' Corvette also counts as an EXO, even if it's a dragracer?

Now i see where this car came from that i saw recently.. i was coming home from a camping trip and this guy appeared out of nowhere behind me on the Angeles Crest Highway, through the mountains (forest). I was driving my Jeep so no point in racing him so i let him pass. This guy was gone! That car was hugging those turns so well and i could see him at a distance increasing the gap. It looked like a big go-kart. I wondered what fun vehicle this was, and now i know what it was based off of. Thanks!
When I was a kid (1960's) Gymkhana was a big thing. Parking lot racing. "Track cars" were the norm. Everything from VW to corvette based. Think go karts with big engines :) And most of them were not registered for road use. Not many had any lights at all. Some didn't even have a generator/alternator, just a light weight battery (and some of those were only 6V).
This is the same thing that makes motorcycles drive fast. A typical 600cc motorcycle weighs 400-500lb, and can make between 70 and 120 HP. That's quite the power-to-weight ratio!
The newest ND2 (2019+ / N/A 181hp / 7500 RPM Redline) Miata's are actually pretty quick, 0-60mph in 5.6 seconds and feels quicker with the low center of gravity and curb weight of just 2340lbs. Sure plenty of quicker cars out there but IMO it's much more fun to actually be able to run the car through the gears without breaking every posted limit before your out of 2nd gear, etc.
That's actually very true. I've had several old stick shift cars, and currently have a head cam C6 Z06. While that car is incredible, I can break every speed limit in town in 1st gear. I think I generally had more fun driving my 5 speed 96 Civic. It had an even higher redline and you could bang gears for days.
The only problem with those "madmax" type of cars (bc i would loooove to make me one, since i'm a mechanic) iiiss that it is illegal in my country (France) ... Yup, you've read this right, modifying the chassis , frame, or removing the body (like doors, hood, trunk lid, etc) makes your car not street legal anymore and not covered by any insurances (Because it modifies the safety mesures like deformation properties of the car in case of an impact for example)
That's funny, because the old Peugeots over there basically a cardboard box sitting on a platform. Of course their top speed is like 40 mph, but it's still laughable to call them 'safe' cars. If there were ever a car that lends itself to home made modifications its Peugeot.
One of my dreams is to learn how to weld , move somewhere that allows this kind of build, and build my own tube frame with a mid engine setup and wishbone suspension. (obviously tested in solidworks first). Hopefully I'll be able to do this in the next 5-10 years.
Mine too, I want to make it so I have full set of fiberglass panels to look like supercar, but to be easy enough to remove them for exocar, so I can swap it however I wanti
@@A_Cowboy_called_JackRabbit currently kinda busy with my e46 rebuild and life in general, but as soon as i have a running car and have transportation other than my mtb i will...
Just FYI, if you like something like this but not to the extreme this goes to, look up "Hobby Rallye Cross" .. I've seen a mk4 vr6 that went as far with the weight savings as to remove gears from the gearbox, because who needs a fourth and fifth... It's usually exact opposite of these - you keep the outside sheet metal but gut everything else and, let me tell you, some people go insane. BMW 328 with a CEMENT BLOCK for ballast, sure.. A Skoda 120 with a straight eight instead of the rear seats? Yop.. I've seen a Renault 5 with a turbo charged Hayabusa engine in it.. Insane builds.
Didn't even give a mention to the American built DF Goblin that uses a Chevy Cobalt as a donor!? Gets rid of the weight distribution problems by making it a mid engine rear wheel drive exocar you can build for around $15k
A significant miss on your part is not mentioning the DF Goblin. Light weight chassis designed to use the Chevy ECO TEC driven train from a 15 year old Cobalt. Fast and relatively well balanced for track use. Another build that comes in around $15000 if you do your parts shopping right.
Don't forget about aero, especially if you want to go with higher road speeds. Go for something similar to the ariel atom. Put aero around non-aerodynamic areas while maintaining airflow through already air flowing areas. It's usually forgotten a lot on. these builds, but learning how to work with fiberglass and build your own panels is really fun and is good to put on your resume if you wanna get into the motorsport industry 😉
I drew these as kids, not know what they were, nor ever seeing one, I just LOVE the look of them for some reason Thank you for introducing these. as soon as i can, I will be converting a miata

@@NikosPer Well, if it would be a totaled car that would have had no hope brought from a scrapyard it would not be like that. Also you could just buy the engine and driveshaft stuff and build the tubes and stuff yourself without the need of the body.

Wow gotta admit im a little disapointed that Roadkill didnt get mentioned at the start of this. I feel like they rejuvinated the exo car for street racing given some people might be a little scared to bring their new full car to the track and not wanting to daily a miata for a track car either.
@@bigscrewg I was fixing to say, that's exactly like my tube frame rail job. Cut the horns off the bug floor pan and welded it to a tube chassis, ditto to the front end
My neighbor built a exo build out of a Nissan 350z. He's pushing about 600hp and does 1/4 miles in high 10s and low 11s all day consistently. But he constantly has to make slight modifications before and after races due to the frame itself not being sturdy and strong enough to hold up parts for long extended periods of time. And this is common amongst exo builds because most of everything his held by welds or 3d printed adapters customed for certain parts. But the fastest run I've seen him go was at 156.
Was Hot Rod the originator of the "EXO" car with the '66 Imperial they stripped to the bare chassis drag racing it several times along the way. I know they managed 12's but idk if they dipped into the 11's
I wish I had the know-how to do this back when I was driving my Honda CRX. I stripped what I could and brought the weight down to about 1850 lbs. It had about 110 hp and it was a thrill watching folks with Z06s shake their heads when I'd beat their lap times. Had I known how to weld, I would have gladly turned it into one of these and still used it as my daily driver.
Ive always wondered about things like this, the dune buggies, even the SLCs, or other kit cars ..... how do people go about getting them street legal? I can see cars that started off as a production car because it at least theoretically has a VIN attatched to it but there has got to be a mile of hoops to jump through to keep your state off your back about it?
Even in Germany all you need is a technical expert signing off on your welds, and the paper trail that everything that went into it would be street legal. That way you can get a prototype certification and get going.
@@Argosh paper trail , u mean every part used should be new and documented(receipts, taxes , approved from state standards , etc) . ? if its that , it can get complicated. what about the parts that i make myself ? from what i read, only in USA people sucessfully register those kind of cars , anywhere else is too costly , too long(like years) , or not even possible
@@leoyru.3361 that's just nonsense. For a one off vehicle you need to show that it has breaks, the correct lights and adheres to applicable pollution legislation. The frames testing itself is basically up to the engineer doing the certification. I actually did this once and the only expensive part was the electromagnetic testing (since I was building an EV) which ran me above 2000€. The rest was done with less than 500€. Using off the shelf parts from street legal vehicles you could even get well below those 500.
I don't think you know what you're talking about. For example, aluminium tubing would not be on many, if any, of the home built ones of these. It would be steel tubing.

The point of a supercar is luxury and road legality, while going fast. When you’re so shot that you didn’t realize that they’ve been racing tubular chassis cars in nascar since the 1960s and people just started building them for the street, these would be even faster if they had any form of aerodynamics like a fiberglass shell instead of a bare chassis with a million little holes to catch the wind and add resistance
One big problem to think about are vehicle inspections. If you live somewhere that requires "safety" and/or "emissions" inspections as part of registration renewal, you might have to go with a car old enough to be "exempt" as the donor car. For my area, that is currently roughly mid-80s.

Some time ago, I saw a photo of an Exo-car fueled by compressed natural gas, and built by an extremely talented young man ! My issue with that is, being able to reach him ! What I haven't mentioned yet is, I am paralyzed from my neck down, and remain determined to achieve this build capability in house !!! At this point, while I am not overly thrilled with them, an LS engine can easily live in a turbocharged environment, and continue to be dependable on a daily basis ! With the ability to generate impressive consistent horsepower numbers ! 1000+ HP kind of numbers ! Current aftermarket braking systems can provide plenty of stopping power ! Weight balance issues quickly become a non-issue, and aero-down-force both front and rear can easily be achieved ! I am extremely ready to roll on this little bit of insanity ! Is there anyone out there that might be interested in taking this insane experience with me ? I think this could be the beginning of something extremely intense and hugely gratifying ! Reach out to me here, and we can go forward from that !
I for long thought car makers should be more like that, the old landrover series actually was a lot like that despite many people not expecting it, they where huge, ofroad cars, that where insanely strong and also very well suited as a tractor. but in reality their motor was only something of around 20pk(hp) to 40pk(hp), they just had very good transmission, gearboxes and torque overall, also they where much lighter than many other cars despite being so big because they kept it to a minimum, where needed they where not afraid to use actual truck axises and bottomfram for strength(strong enough to drive straight through a brick wall with them(litterally)), but the rest was all kept very simple, cheap and light, almost the enter top was aluminium and glass overall, also directly easily removable(with some basic tools). not to long ago I saw one of those first gen 109's with a boat and trailer behind it beat a normal modern bmw in fuell efficiency(1/10 on the highway) that said some bmw's are terrible in fuel usage and slow due to intane weight due to extra useless stuff which is why they are so cheap secondhand since almost noone wants them here. in speed it wasn't to much could drive highway speed however I have seen modern microcars with 2 to 3 times as powerfull motors that can't properly do that, and yet those huge acient cars can do it with those small motors. then if you care about speed there is the nissan 350z, a sportcar which was very lightweight and very robust, people tune those engines to arond 350 hp safely and some over 600, they made great drifters, and still are among the best cars in mountainrallys, especially in the 2wd, almost completely due to being much simpler so much more light weight than most other cars from back then and now, and much more easy to tune and such because of that. simplicity alows for more than speed and efficiency, also makes it much more easy to maintain and tune if done right. those 2 cars aren't those full custom ultralight cars but they are kind of what normal cars should be like efficient, simplistic, cheap, usefull, etc.
More of these cars need to follow the 'Fiero formula', which is to say how GM originally came up with a mid-engine car. The Fiero originally used a Chevy Citation FWD engine, trans, and suspension in the rear, and a Chevette front suspension (as it was a RWD). It was far from ideal, but it worked well enough to sell for years. There's lots of FWD cars to use as donors, and a generic Mustang II or Pinto tubular suspension commonly used for prewar bodies hot rods could easily round out the front end. Heck, some AWD donors, mainly small SUVs, could make really cool options with a better weight balance than a totally FWD chassis stripped down.
the miata is already a light car, I was looking for one a while back with a simple dream, swapping the engine and drivetrain for something more spicy. I had in my possession at the time a 1998 Saab 900 SE (engine B204r), then there's a company that makes a bellhousing adapter so you can mate your Saab H engine (B204 B234 B205 B235 B206) to a BorgWarner T5 (not exactly a hard to find transmission). That alone would have made such a fun car, +60 hp on a miata without modifying the Saab engine, but ya know if you're gonna swap the engine to a different car you might as well take some extra steps. Like giving that engine more room to breathe because at least according to the forums there's a lot you can gain without actually having to modify internals (iron block, chain driven, forged crank and rods, with sprayers cooling the pistons all by default), better forced induction than the teeny tiny stock turbo, and of course some computer optimization. It would have been absolutely sick.

Use stock seatbelts with a window net.
Only use harnesses if you have a helmet and hans device combo.

Exo even makes panel kits for Exocet, which gives them more aero for top end and down force for track days. Really doesn't get much better for a budget racer
Yes I vote exomotive exocet.

I remember reading an article on exomotive years ago thinking they looked so cool, I didn't realize how popular they would become.

When I was a kid (1960's) Gymkhana was a big thing. Parking lot racing. "Track cars" were the norm. Everything from VW to corvette based. Think go karts with big engines :)
And most of them were not registered for road use.
As someone who puts 20k miles on a bike a year and has an exocar, I utterly agree.
until you use a rotary and have 220 ps with 280 lb
The first "exocar" I remember seeing was the Corvette that Road Kill Garage built like 10 yrs ago.
All facts, this is based
That's actually very true. I've had several old stick shift cars, and currently have a head cam C6 Z06. While that car is incredible, I can break every speed limit in town in 1st gear. I think I generally had more fun driving my 5 speed 96 Civic. It had an even higher redline and you could bang gears for days.
I drive an RX8 and my fiance drives an ND2 miata, I love them both for that fun but legal factor.
The only problem with those "madmax" type of cars (bc i would loooove to make me one, since i'm a mechanic)
iiiss that it is illegal in my country (France) ... Yup, you've read this right, modifying the chassis , frame, or removing the body (like doors, hood, trunk lid, etc) makes your car not street legal anymore and not covered by any insurances (Because it modifies the safety mesures like deformation properties of the car in case of an impact for example)

"Does this part make the car move?" Literally points to one of the 5 wheels, yes, you need some version of 4 tires and a steering wheel.
He was pointing to the wheel well/fender hahaha
"does this make the car move?" -removes the brakes-

One big problem to think about are vehicle inspections. If you live somewhere that requires "safety" and/or "emissions" inspections as part of registration renewal, you might have to go with a car old enough to be "exempt" as the donor car. For my area, that is currently roughly mid-80s.
pretty cool, not street legal in 90% of the developed world
Although probably safer... for the passengers atleast.
@@wormbo2 how is it safer?
back in the day some mountain guide bros were competing each year to climb a mountain to work (really steep, paved, tons of turns). each year they kept upping the performance. hot rodded mini coopers were all the rage for a while. the final best car- Porsche 914 with a V-8. Insanely fast. Street legal go-kart.
The reality is that building sucha car is far more expensive then buying a very fast used car
Literally. The thumbnail says 5 grand the video says 15. Plus it takes vigorous hours to complete the build and that’s if you know what you’re doing, and time is money so.
Okay, let's say that I'm more the turbocharged mid-engined guy !
Still not wanting to spend an insane amount of $$$ but, definitely want an end result build that can, and will prove a point when and where it is asked to !
I have the needed shop facilities, and willing talented labor group that can easily get inside my head at a
minutes notice !
Some time ago, I saw a photo of an
Exo-car fueled by compressed natural gas, and built by an extremely talented young man !
My issue with that is, being able to reach him !
What I haven't mentioned yet is,
I am paralyzed from my neck down, and remain determined to achieve this build capability in house !!!
This video was made by someone who knows nothing about cars.. ROFL
Much Love from Boston MA 🇩🇴🇵🇷💯
So like, a zoomer ratrod
Yes
2:47 that's less than your mom 😂😂🤣, how did you say that with a straight face 😂😂
How do you know he had a straight face it doesn't show his face
Dude, I haven't watched one of your videos in a while, I have to say I'm loving the comedy lmao.
Kit cars are the bees knees. Love to build one some day
Perfectly executed “your mama” joke. Earned a sub for catching me off guard
I'm engaging with this content in support of the Princess Bride reference. Thanks.
Finally a reason to buy a Fiero
Roadkill genius still alive on YT.
the miata is already a light car, I was looking for one a while back with a simple dream, swapping the engine and drivetrain for something more spicy.
