    Just a small point. What you are describing is Hopes NEW method, as published in 1707. he had already written 3 manuals on the more common method a decade earlier. People seem to always neglect his early works, which is a real shame.

      Very true, and it is a shame that frankly most of smallsword is ignored/neglected. especially given the beneficial affect it can have on your understanding of fencing. Personally I find his new method to be a perfect example of practicality. It's not some upstart breaking the game, it's a tried and tested master boiling things down for a specific instance.

    This is awesome! I’m learning Broadsword and have been interested in this (since Hope says it is equally applicable to broadsword). It’s nice to have a visual. ❤

    The hanging guards. You see this in sabre. It's easy for beginners to pick up and become proficient quickly.

      Yep, and since you'll do what comes most naturally, prime is always a good start.

    thanks for the video! its a really interesting technique. Its not all that often you hear people talking about an entire combat tactic (doubly so for anything relating to small sword which isn’t as popular on youtube), even one that’s admittedly simple. But i could definitely understand how such a too the point system would be write. downby hope. I could only imagine in a mortal situation, some of your more advanced moves might slip your mind or become unfeasible, not to mention its good for beginners like you said.
    the eternal motto, keep it simple, stupid comes to mind. sometimes occams razor can really work out well. Not to say its a win all card, but an adequate all round technique is a good thing to learn. thanks again!

    I loved learning about this. While the method does look a little silly it is definitely effective. I'd love to hear more tips and tricks for working with a small sword. I'm trying to learn Small sword techniques atm.

    Another great video! (I know, I'm catching up.) Seems like this would be ideal for someone used to saber or backsword as well.

    (smallswords) I tried today against instructor and it worked like a charm wtf? we ended sparring with me losing pretty hard, but then I remembered about this one and asked for 2 more rounds of which I've won both of lmao
    the only problems I had was I have kinda large gloves (barelly fits inside of my saber) and it was very hard to point down because of that, so I could only protect area to my upper right, but even then it worked awesome.
    I didn't wait for him to lunge or anything because he's too skilled anyways and surprisingly it was eating my arm stamina much faster than hanging guard with saber, but still, worked 2 times out of 2 times I tried in a row against dude who's much more skilled than me
    thank you soooo much, if you want to expand or show more features/tactics with this system please do or if you have it already suggest what videos to watch
    and overall I want more things like that now lol, pls MORE lmao

      Haha, well I'm glad to hear the method worked as intended. There isn't much more to it but I've had a decent amount of clamor for more smallsword content so I'll do my best to accomedate that in the near future.

    how much should a hema smallsword cost on average ???

    • @rocketcityhema671
      @rocketcityhema671  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Varies, but usually I see them going for $200 or so on the nicer end. Honestly though you can learn all of it with a foil.

    Hand and arm aren't a target in smallsword like modern foil, yeah?

    • @rocketcityhema671
      @rocketcityhema671  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Full body is a target, and certainly someone with good point control could possibly get a thrust into the arm with it being extended. However this would be risky in a life or death duel as they'll be left open. In a first blood context though, might be worth it.

    This Hope guy is like a "camper" in fencing then? ^^

    • @rocketcityhema671
      @rocketcityhema671  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This strategy can be somewhat akin to holding a highly adventageous defensive position. Hope was an excellent fencer, and it really shows how much he knew the art to make something that frustrates it so perfectly.

      @@rocketcityhema671 I was just being silly, but was fun watching you talk about it. Checking out different fencing videos becasue I am roleplaying as a fencer in a RPG. But I am also an historian in history of religions, so have a love for anything from the "the olden days".
