Interesting practical application of the drill. Excellent reasoning. Thank you.
shooters missed
How does the 1.6mm steel hold up to general longsword level impact?
The person in green seems to be standing too much.
Incredible use of Zogho Largo and Halfswording!
Yikes, I really read that wrong from the manual! I'd been assuming he was slipping the lead leg and drawing the body back with it (not voiding the sword) and simultaneously counter-cutting at the offending arm during the slip (rather than parrying). Confusion across systems' terminology I guess. Thanks again for the live demonstrations!
To be fair, the slip in this case can be done against a cut to any particular portion of the body. If you see they're going for the hand, just move the hand. Leg, the same but leave the arm there. When they go deep (throwing home) is when everything better move. Happy to help, thanks for watching.
@@rocketcityhema671 Makes sense! I've seen similar options in sidesword. I was wondering why Page seemed so focused on slipping leg cuts. Manual says "limb" with an inside or outside step and I just assumed leg. I also tend to assume if it says "and" (without a comma) like "step and cut" it's a simultaneous action, vs "step, and cut" or "step, then cut", and came up with something I'd seen used in another system. Comparing these as you did to Ferdinand's broadsword #6 is a good example. I think you're the only one actually demonstrating Page, so keep it coming! Thanks again!
Great video and google docs, thanks
Really awesome vid! always love the breakdown and explanations
All this time later and Im just now finding out about Nicolaes Petter. Seriously loving his stuff thusfar.
Field of Lost Daggers would make an awesome album name
Interesting seeing them switch to halfswording(?), ive seen it talked about in many places but never seen it used in a fight
Thanks! recently bought a real wood and metal shield for a costume (though it's strapped) and realized I REALLY needed an exercise regimen to get used to this thing
Damn underrated
It would be so cool if you made a consolidated, updated broadsword video series. Im not someone who learns out of manuscripts very well and you delivery the information better than any other channel. I really want to learn broadsword from the beginning
Yasssss take it with them!!!
I really appreciate your video, thank you very much. Been wondering about some of the stuff you mentioned and generally a great guard video. ❤
This channel is like coffee for coffee makers, gold HEMA nuggets.
Thank you very much.
Absolutely agree. Very clear explanation of useful and cool techniques, much needed. Very big thanks!
Great video....thank you!
Very practical and straight forward.
This was great! Pretty much my exact interpretation as well. I agree about Page’s distance too. Books like Lonnergan and Ferdinand generally teach you to fight from first distance really well. I feel like Page, especially with the emphasis on traversing, is teaching how to fight from half sword. That includes the focus on timing the guard, pausing and waiting, leg cuts, etc.
Thanks you for that instruction sir I really appreciate it it’s really something that you’re willing to take the time to help people like me out so again thank you
Everyone has their knickers in a twist about German and Italian longsword, but no one is talking about English longsword. This could be adventageous for a little bit.
Good morning sir I have a question so in fencing in general the hands move first then the feet but I’m having a little trouble when using a passing step my strike tends to land a lot faster than my foot can catch up so my question is in a passing step should the strike and the foot lane at the same time?
Hey there, I will try to answer this in a video tonight. Keep an eye out for it tomorrow.
Does this technique have any other names than Flashy Smallsword? Also if I'm interested in learning how to use a small sword would you have any suggestions on where to acquire one?
I have a version of that sword called a Musician's sword. The blade extends only about 3 inches beyond the end of the fuller, making it easier to wear for a musician with a drum or a Sax horn. I firmly believe they came up with these swords by taking broken NCO swords such as yours and grinding a new spear point over the broken blade.
Great instruction! Thanks for this, is really interesting.
The heavy cavalry sabre has a huge Ricasso
Would love more Messer. But personally more interested in concepts, tactics, structure, or takes on techniques
Hey, get well man. We’ll all be here when you get back.
Where could I find primary sources describing fechtschule rules?
That was great, mate. You are a natural storyteller. You should make this a series
I will patiently await the next getting more out of Thomas Page. This was a great video in the meantime!
Thank you!!
I loved learning about this. While the method does look a little silly it is definitely effective. I'd love to hear more tips and tricks for working with a small sword. I'm trying to learn Small sword techniques atm.
Atlanta Cutlery/ Windlass sell reproduction smatchets. I first noticed them as a bushcraft big blade.
Ah yes, the trololo stance...
You have a magnificent ponytail good sir.
Take your time and heal.
What are your thoughts on using hanging guards (+linear footwork) for arming sword? Like how William Hope recommends using hanging guards for smallsword against broadswords or sabre in his New method. Would that improve the chances of the arming sword against the sabre? (Probably not the later century bowl hilt types, but perhaps against early knucklebow sabres)
It can certainly buy you some time, any sword using a hanging guard/prime parry will be an integral part of the playbook. The biggest danger is that the hand is very exposed and it is somewhat familiar to the saber user. We don't want to be playing their game and using a piece of it opens up many devices for them.
Sorry to hear it, sir. May you heal swiftly! :)
love you, man. Heal up quick!
Get well soon !! Thank you for your generous teaching, it's been very helpful in my solo studies over here on the other side of the globe
My prayers go out to you for quick recovery hope all goes well for you this channel is my go to for knowledge on hema I don’t have a coach where I live so you are like my online coach if you will so thanks again for the content I look forward to some more videos
Hopes for quick healing and thinking out of the box
Update: the highlander is in the character selection grid, now. ;)
Very informative video, thank you. I always seem to learn something from your videos no matter how basic the content.
Great stuff!
Hello again sir sorry to ask a question not related to you video again but do you have any videos on Pell work with the longsword?
Good explanation of armor value and weapon usage. I really hope I can make it to your event at some point. It just sounds like so much fun. What is the draw weight of the bows you are firing the dorp arrows with? Was Cam's helmet the Bareena Emporium sturmhaube? Sorry, not familiar enough with the rap-shot, other than I know that it is something the SCA likes to teach. What is the prohibition for? Safety, in order to protect from too hard a hit?
Would love to have you come out, it's a grand time. The bows are 25-50 lbs draw at 28 inches. Yes indeed it was, a good helmet once you sort out a liner. The prohibition is for two reasons. 1, safety. It's safer in SCA rattan fighting because they all wear steel helmets, most of our shield users in melee are on the lighter armored side and often in fencing masks. A rap shot to the back of the head is very dangerous in these conditions. The second reason is priority, some of the rules of any event I run are to encourage behaviors. Rather than trying to throw wrap shots (especially the rib one I demonstrated) I would rather fighters work to seek thrusts or wrestle at close distance. These both line up with the armor values anyway since cutting a gambeson with 1 hand does nothing and wrap shotting a steel helmet also does nothing.
How long was the haft on the 2 handed axe? I’m planning to bring one, and planning on buying the 5’8 shaft off of purple heart armory, and I’m wondering if I will need to shorten that at all
The Dane Axe? they aren't terribly long, but as long as the haft isn't too heavy then 5,8 should be fine.
