  • Wait, what? Yet another method??? Haven't we just celebrated the Lindqvist Method a few days ago?
    Well, that is the dynamic of this problem, people keep trying, refining and perfecting the method.
    Another day another method. This time from Dublin hence we call it D-Method or Dublin Method.
    It all has to do with the 12V battery and the ability to support the BMU. If the 12V system fails, the BMU will reset.

    I've just watched a video on the Renault Zoe EV, they were doing a brake fluid change and they mentioned resetting the range (the battery charge) on it's version of the BDU. If Renault do it as part of a service, why do Mitsubishi not do it? Mitsubishi are now part of the Renault Nissan alliance.

    Andy, I reset the car a second time. This time, everything went well! The car is driving error-free again! I have the first time 12V BATTERY FOR 2 HOURS ISOLATED 2 HOURS FINALLY TOO SMALL at the 2 times I have disconnected 12v battery for 8 hours after all other steps again performed. Now the car is running like one again. For anyone who wants to try the Lindqvist method, I recommend disconnecting 12v battery for 8 and more hours. Otherwise, there is the possibility that you get the same problems as me the first time! take your time Lindqvist Method does not hurry! P.S Andy Best Man Keep it up !!!

    Goodmorning Andy, I was just watching this video, when you said the story of Alexander “Alex” , after a partial reset, due to power failure.
    We drove 2699 km to France and back to the Netherlands. Than the same as Alex, now power, after pushing the charge mode no problem.
    At always happens with a low battery and low on fuel. The time the main charger needs for a full load is longer from max 4.15 ‘‘tis now 5.15.
    Yesterday at 19:30 we cut of the power on the 12 v battery of the 🚗. This morning at 07:30 we plugged in the charger, connected the 12 v. battery for 5 sec. and now we will wait.

      Good morning, here is Alex. In my experience, the problem should go with performance loss way. I reset my Outlander second time on Wednesday, I disconnected 12v battery for 8 hours then connected charger, connected 12v battery for about 3 to 5 seconds and then recharged after 6 hours charging the car has finished charging as it should and the green charging light on Charger has blinked permanently. Charger removed and the 12v battery reconnected, at first startup comes an error message fault electrical system watchdog showed 105% and 40Ah ignition off again, comes immediately correction 38Ah and no more errors! Loading times have also been extended by about 1 hour for me. When loading with chademo I need now instead of 23 min 43 min while shaft charging station charge 6.8 Kw before it was only 4.2 Kw between 30% and 78%. in 4 days I drove 1300km of it 300 electric. Have not been able to find any more problems so far no matter if battery is full or empty, except that the battery capacity is now 37.7 Ah. I'm curious how fast the battery comes to old values. And one more thing the problem with performance loss probably comes from wrong data. according to watchdog the battery would have 10.6Ah when the problem occurs, I noticed that the battery only 262,8v indicated before the battery has never had less than 273v, I have never seen before. I suspected that the battery is already empty. It is not with me other than the 12v battery to separate again I was curious and have just tried what happens when I disconnect the 12v battery for a short time. I disconnected 12v battery for about 3 minutes and reconnected and suddenly watchdog showed me only 1.6 Ah instead of 10.6 before 3 min so difference of 9 Ah. That is, the controller has gotten the wrong data all the time, and of course not started the engine at the right time to recharge the battery because system has still indicated enough residual current. in reality, the battery was already empty! why it happened so I do not know. After two days of testing back and forth, I decided to reset the car again. Second time was completely successful. Hope my post was helpful to you and other interested parties. Alex

    Finally the D-Method worked for me! I've been trying every variation of the Linqvist method that has been posted but didn't have any luck. Thanks!
    I have a North American 2018 version.
    Used the BMU voltage display on the Dog until it showed just under 8v with no load. Around 7v with everything on: High beams, Fans, Seat Heat etc. It was very interesting to watch the various systems shut down with warning messages as the voltage dropped.
    Took about 3 tries when reconnecting the 12v with the EVSE plugged in to get the timing right.

      Sorry I didn't time it. It was less than one hour. I also plugged in a little 12v cabin heater to help load it up.

      Trunk was open with a blanket covering lock. 40 Ah.
      I'm wondering if the Linqvist method worked with older cars as their 12v batteries would drop voltage during their disconnect hours. Our newer cars 12v might be holding their voltage longer.

    Updated now and looking forward to the suitcase, yeah a bit of ducking and diving again to keep us coming back ready for the next vid, just like the soaps do on the telly, your getting the hang of this 😉
    Im quite sure this new method is the better way, as long as the rom is not disrupted on the eprom all will be fine otherwise you are screwed. Its much like the pc ram wipe that we do with the button to the case to reset I think?
    If we knew if it was a plugin type & where the dam thing was we could adapt it so a reset was as easy as the pc type, maybe?
    So up until now I wasn't convinced all this charge up method, unplug etc was the right way,but now I might be up to try this, as it seems more logical.
    As I still have 35.1 Ah Im not to anxious yet, but it would be nice to see 38+ back. if it stays dry here, there's a good chance I will attempt it.
    Its a pity Haynes dont make manuals for the Outlander Phev cos that would be useful here.

      I did the L-method on my 2014 Outlander. Seemed to work. Now it shows same sympoms , power loss at 4 km left on battery. Took it to Mitsubishi dealer. They said the problem is with the BMU thinking the battery is 2 months old (10 years actually)! This is the real reason for the motor not kicking in as needed. Sure, hitting the charge button helps but this is not what it should be. Not very satisfied customer!

    Lindquist method 100% ok, from 72% to 100%, or from 27 amp to 38 amp. working effective. 67000 kms vehicle year 2013. Thanks friends.

      Hi mate. I didn't use a spare battery but did this:-
      Switched on lights heated seats and rear heated window. Voltage on dog dropped quite quickly down to approx 9.5v within 5-10 minutes, then I switched heated seats off to decrease the volt drop pace! Then the dash stated "Ev brake system service required" this was at 7.6v then I switched off engine and all heater/ lights Plugged charger in and applied 12v negative until the wall box clicked once, then I quickly removed 12v negative. Unplugged charger and reconnected 12v terminal. Switched on engine and display said " EV System service required" that never happened before many attempts, so I knew it worked. Checked Dog and 40aH was back and 60 days on 🎂
      1 minute later drop to 38 aH.!
      The only thing I did differently was ensure I disconnected negative terminal as soon as soon I heard the click on wall charger, before I listened for the click inside car and that didn't work.
      So now everytime I connect charger disconnect negative, disconnect charger reconnect negative I get 40aH each time. I don't have to drain 12v anymore.
      By the way I let 12v aux battery go to 6.7v one time as it dropped quite quick due to all stuff switched on, the car died so had to wait a while to recover!
      Conclusion.. be careful when draining battery to "catch" 7.6v at "EV brake system service required" must be the ""reset" point on ECU.

    Just a warning. Depleting the 12v battery that low may damage it. It is not made for that.

      Yes, not ideal for the battery, maybe there's a way of artificially reducing the 12v, by way of a low ohm/high wattage resistor between the neg pole
      of the battery and the negative lead ???

      @Zecret W That's a better idea, the only concern after that....is the low voltage going to damage any sensitive components (a bit like a mains power "brownout" which can do more damage that a "power out") !!

      Battery will be fine at 8V for a few minutes, no damage to expect. These lead acid batteries are very tough. My ride-on's battery was flat dead on just 1V for months and after charging it it still fine and working, holding voltage as before....

    Same thing happens to me after LM as for Alex. Suddendly no power from the engines, ICE is not starting, no EV. Really dangerous when it happens in traffic. Pressing the Charge button makes it come back to life after some time. It seems It happens when one cell goes too low, maybe

      That bad cell needs to be replaced asap. by dropping below 3.3V it starts degrading even faster than the other cells and the situation goes worse and worse.

      @@M1kke78 Asked Mitsubishi to replace the battery on my cost (105000 SEK), but they refuse to do it as the car has too many km(180000), so looking do to it on my own or with 3rd party shop, but don’t know how. Any help appreicated!

    Hi Andy did Linqvist procedure 4 times no change to the SOC still at 91.5 34 Ah almost 70000 kms but the car GOM showing up to 57 km but not equating with real distance. The remaining km on the Dog is 37 km. will play with the D method see what happens.

    12v acid battery discharged that low will damage the battery. 12v battery should not drop below 10-11v, otherwise it may not charge properly at all. I dont think I will try this particular method.

      I don't think it will damage the battery. A few minutes at 8V is totally fine. If it would be 0V for a long time, yes, but this short moment does not cause any damage.

    Hi, just thinking ( brainstorm! ) why not disconnect + & - completely and use a spare drained battery reading 8v and connect up to car and follow D method? Saves messing with the cars own Battery! Unless draining slowly is part of the method of resetting?? Might give it a go as the Lindqvist method hasn't worked yet 4 me ne way. ( If works ill call it Belfast Method! Lol )

    Update many battery 🔋 ready 36”2 amph ev range 41 km (on display 57 km) , after reset no warning ⚠️ on the display.
    I send my wife and daughter to a shopping center. So we wait, a hope they don’t have a problem with the BMU .

    Alex propably had bad cells or the pack was degraded more overall. The pack is designed to give out something like at least ~300V (80x3.7V@25%) so who knows what happens when it goes below that. It would be nice to know the age, milage of the car and the dogs voltage reading from the battery pack. Low 12V battery could also cause those symptoms.

      I would strongly reccommend everybody to do a watchdog scan on cells when battery is empty BEFORE performing Lidquist method. If there are bad cells found, then those needs to be replaced first.

    The issues where the engine did not start when the battery is low I would suspect that there may be some real degradation that the BMU hasn't figured out yet.

    Why not disconnect both positive and negative terminals of 12v battery and follow the proceed from there. That should completely clear the bmu? Running the 12v battery to 7v may permanently damage it. Just a suggestion.

      The battery does not get damaged from that. It will stay at this voltage only for a short moment. Just long enough to crash the BMU ;)

      No need to disconnect both cables.
      Once the Negative cable is removed, the battery is no longer powering the system.
      Low voltage on a battery will not damage a battery as long as it is charged up again.
      Leaving a battery in a low state of charge for a long period of time will damage a battery however due to suffation of the plates which can short out the plates.

      Just disconnect the positive... then short to the negative wire for 10 minutes, normally this is enough to kill off all the keep alive capacitors inside ECUs. You can disconnect and wait ages, or just ground them right away. We do this at work to reset normal ICE ECUs.

      You can reprogram this again. Just google how to... all the way down then all the way up while holding the button for 5s longer... something like this.

      In my 2016 UK model, when ACC mode is on only high beam and radio works. It will take hours to discharge. Which seems more time consuming than Lindquist, that BTW didn't work for me 4x. Unless of course I am doing something wrong...

    After what feels like weeks trying the L method, I tried something of the D method a couple of times tonight.
    1) Drove drive battery empty though not deemed required as I was worried it might try and juice the 12v.
    2) Parked up, turned on remote heating, opened a beer and drove main battery down to 7ah for the same reason as above.
    3) Turned car on (blue) but not in drive mode.
    4) Turned on as many electrics as I could (Fan, High Beams, Seats, Cabin Lights, Fogs etc).
    5) Drank beer and watched more phev video's on youtube.
    6) The Dogs BMU voltage (same as 12v) dropped to 7.4v with load (8.2v no load).
    7) Disconnected 12v battery.
    8) Plugged in Mains Charger.
    9) Reconnected 12v and quickly removed 12v until the Charger Click only just activated.
    10) Wait about 10 seconds and then Plug 12v back in. Dog should show 38-40ah. Now drink more beer in celebration and let her charge.
    I had to do steps 6-9 about 6 times before I got the timing right. I almost gave up to be honest! I'm very glad I gave it that one last go!
    Also, a note on step 5. On the first go at this, I got distracted due to beer and accidentally drove the 12v down to 5v which isn't enough juice to activate the charging relays. I had to bail and start again after a small charge.

    End result was 40ah which reverted to 38ah during the charge phase. This was formally 34.6ah. The car now thinks we can do 37 miles. we shall see!

      I tried this method and the charger relay wont start so the car wount charge and the 12v battery could not start the car. I had EV SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED. The only way I could start the car again is jump start the car.

      Ich kann es leider nicht demonstrieren, da meine Austauschbatterie mit 10 Jahren Garantie kommt und ich nicht daran rumfummeln will.

    You realise if you drain your aux lead acid battery you risk damaging it permanently? This is a seriously bad idea.

      why is it a seriously bad idea? A lead acid battery costs peanuts in the scheme of things - especially for someone who has spent premium money on a PHEV with a significantly reducing battery range. If it turns out that the only risk here is possible damage to a car battery, that needs replacing every few years anyway, then that's great news. There may be risks to the BMU etc. from what others have said, but if it's only risking the health of the lead battery, then that's definitely worth it for many owners.

      It won't damage it. if it would be 0V for a long time, yes, but ~8V for a few minutes is totally save.
