Cliff really was a complete Genius playing the Bass, he lived for such a short time but look at how he mastered the Bass. Only a Genius who dedicated his life to one thing can do that.
Fade to black was absolutely released before Cliff died, considering its on their 2nd release and he died after their 3rd. As far as "To Live is to Die" the lyrics are taken from Cliff's poetry/lyrics, which begin with a line from the 1981 movie "Excalibur" (still the best Aurthurian legend movie ever btw) Merlin spoke regarding Aurthur's father Uthur, "When a man lies, he murders a part of the world..." "These are the pale deaths, and so on are absolutely Cliff, likely inspired by that one line to go further. I do hope James and/or mates knew where Cliff got the line from and I strongly suggest everyone watch it often. I watch it and I think of Cliff and what it must have been like to see that, at that time, as a metal head, talented musician, drawn to the fantasy, tales of wizards and folklore and ancient battles, Dungeons and Dragons, sci-fi, and so on. In 1981 I turned 5, I was turned on to Metallica when I was 9 and that was it, thrash and a new understanding of what a bass could mean. Those 1st 3 albums are truly where its at. Thank you Cliff, and thank the gods for letting us have the transcendent eternal message and gift of your music.
