Inside the Book of Enoch

  • Of the books left out of the Bible, the First Book of Enoch is among the most fascinating. Purporting to tell the story of Noah’s great-grandfather - the antediluvian patriarch that God took up into heaven - the text includes elaborate visions of the celestial realms and angelic hierarchies. In a past lecture, John Hamer of Toronto Centre Place looked at 1st Enoch’s context, including its acceptance within the canon of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. In this lecture, we dive deep into text, investigating its obscure and esoteric content.
Join the livestream to participate in the discussion and to ask questions to our lecturer during the Q&A:
Other topics covered in this lecture include:
    Second Temple Judaism
    Canon, Apocrypha, and Pseudepigrapha
Why the Book of Enoch is not Canonical
    Antediluvian Myth
    Noah's Ark and the Deluge
    Angels and angelology
    Religious Visions
    Esoteric Texts

Plus the recurrent student population is bound to be high questioning and/or high income, so they are not going to venerate history for ancientness’ sake and they won’t be expecting/pressuring/influencing their teachers to do it either. Although I must say my Western Art History teacher absolutely uncritically loved what he taught from ancient Iraq “Mesopotamia” to Roman dark ages “medieval period” so maybe it’s a historiographical versus critical-analytical-argumentative writing kind of thing.

I love John so much! He just can’t help but contextualize everything. He starts by saying that we’ve already done a lecture on the context of Enoch, so this will be more of a deep dive, then he gives me way more context for how apocalypticism came about than I ever had before. These lectures are amazing. There are a few I’ve avoided, but dozens I’ve seen more than once. I’ve done the Charlemagne one three times solo and once with my brother.

For your Q&A segment. Do you have an opinion on the rise of biblical literalism such as the kind practiced by the Jehovah's Witnesses. It's my understanding that its roots are in the Sola Scriptura tradition of Protestant philosophy, but it seems to have vastly expanded during the third and fourth great awakening (particularly in the US).
Do you think biblical literalism is a natural path that emerges with the diversity of Protestant thought or is there some other socio-economic, philosophical or historical factors at play? (Ie. The rise of modern apocalypticism, William Miller, the great disappointment which the Jehovah's Witnesses trace their roots to)
    Thanks so much in advance.

The book of Acts 21 shows that the followers of James wanted to kill Paul and his message of Grace by faith. The book of Galatians is written to an apostate Church. In the first chapter paul claims that there's a different gospel being preached an by the second chapter he points to the followers of James being troublemakers who have put pressure on Peter to separate himself from Gentiles.

I don’t see Protestants including any version of 1st Enoch on their canons , only the Ethiopian Orthodox but they already contain the most books in their canon so I doubt they are “sola-scriptura” or “concordance” bibliolaters. Most likely the Ethiopian orthodox sect is comfortable with imperfect history/records and non-literalness of myth-making.

The Roman authorities would have considered it the Year Of Calvisus Sabinus and Passienus Rufus, the consuls of that year. If pushed for a numerical year they'd have said it was 750 AU - years after the founding of Rome

Another thing worth mentioning and notting is that in the body Christ had a direct ancestral lineage with Enoch mentioned in Like 3:23-28. knot I said in the body because Christ Jesus is the Word and the Word was made flesh and the Word was with God and the Word was God. Also not that in the Bible the Word is always in capital meaning it used as a Noun.
John 1:1-5 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
    Now back to the lineage
Luke 3:23-38 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,
Which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi, which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Janna, which was the son of Joseph,
Which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Amos, which was the son of Naum, which was the son of Esli, which was the son of Nagge,
Which was the son of Maath, which was the son of Mattathias, which was the son of Semei, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Juda,
Which was the son of Joanna, which was the son of Rhesa, which was the son of Zorobabel, which was the son of Salathiel, which was the son of Neri,
Which was the son of Melchi, which was the son of Addi, which was the son of Cosam, which was the son of Elmodam, which was the son of Er,
Which was the son of Jose, which was the son of Eliezer, which was the son of Jorim, which was the son of Matthat, which was the son of Levi,
Which was the son of Simeon, which was the son of Juda, which was the son of Joseph, which was the son of Jonan, which was the son of Eliakim,
Which was the son of Melea, which was the son of Menan, which was the son of Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David,
Which was the son of Jesse, which was the son of Obed, which was the son of Booz, which was the son of Salmon, which was the son of Naasson,
Which was the son of Aminadab, which was the son of Aram, which was the son of Esrom, which was the son of Phares, which was the son of Juda,
Which was the son of Jacob, which was the son of Isaac, which was the son of Abraham, which was the son of Thara, which was the son of Nachor,
Which was the son of Saruch, which was the son of Ragau, which was the son of Phalec, which was the son of Heber, which was the son of Sala,
Which was the son of Cainan, which was the son of Arphaxad, which was the son of Sem, which was the son of Noe, which was the son of Lamech,
Which was the son of Mathusala, which was the son of Enoch, which was the son of Jared, which was the son of Maleleel, which was the son of Cainan,
Which was the son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of Adam, which was the son of God.
Again to conclude because all on the planet originate from Noe (Noah) after the flood and Noah being the son of Lamech who was the son of Mathusala who was the son of Enoch who was the great grandson of Seth who was the son of Adam which was the son of God hence makes you , I son's of God for all those who believe in him.
Gospel of Thomas saying 3: The Kingdom is inside you, and outside you. When you come to know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will realize it is you who are the sons of the living Father
John 14:6-7: No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father.

At minute 35ish, the statement is made that Enoch's prophecy did not happen but I beg to differ according to the following comments and scriptures.
Not only must one believe that Jesus is the Son of God Most High Creator of everything and was made flesh and dwelt among the people of that age/generation.
Also that He willingly laid down His life for the world, was placed in the tomb, went and preached to the dead whose spirits were in prison and then was raised on the 3rd day by the Spirit of the Most High God but also that He is the Way, the Truth, the Life and the only way to the Father God Most High.
As Jesus is the Truth, everything He said has to be the truth. It would fare us well to read and understand what Jesus meant when He taught in Matthew 16:27&28, in Mark 9:1 and in Luke 9:27. Also in Matthew 10:23, in Matthew 23:34 to 36, in Mark 13:30 & 31 and in Matthew 24:34, that He/Jesus would be returning in that generation or age, just as Jesus told the Sanhedrin and high priest they too would see His return in Matthew 26:63&64 and in Mark 14:62 and in Revelation 1:7, that every eye would His return, even those who pierced Him.
Who was Jesus talking to? Us or the people of that generation or age? Over and over Jesus told us through the Apostle John in Revelation 1:1 what "must" soon come to pass, and in verse 3 that the time was near.
In chapter 2 verse 25, to hold fast to what you have until I come, In chapter 3 verse 11, that He was coming soon.
In chapter 22:6 Then the angel said to me, “These words are faithful and true. The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, has sent His angel to show His servants what must soon take place.”
22:7 “Behold, I am coming soon. Blessed is the one who keeps the words of prophecy in this book.”
22:10 And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand.
22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward [is] with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
And in 22:20 He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
I do not think that Jesus was talking about the year 2024 or any future date of this time or generation or age but to those He was speaking to in that generation or age or time,
    do you?
What does the Apostle to the gentiles have to say about this?
Romans 13:11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.
1st Corinthians 1:8 He will sustain you to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
1st Corinthians 7:29 What I am saying, brothers, is that the time is short and in verse 31
For this world in its present form is passing away. In chapter 10 verse 11 Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
In Philippians 4:5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.
In Colossians 3:4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.
In 2nd Thessalonians 2:2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
1st Timothy 6:14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ:
Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
In Hebrews 10:37 For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.
And what about James 5:7, 8 and 9, 7 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.
8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.
9 Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.
And then what does Peter say about the Lord's return or 2nd coming?
    1st Peter 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
and in 4:7 But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.
A reading of 2nd Peter chapter 3 in the context that the Lord Christ Jesus did just as He said He would, did return/2nd coming, in that generation or age or time as all these letters from the Apostles agree with what Jesus said and was written to the people of that generation but is handed down for us to be ready in this little season spoken of in Revelation chapter 20 with the beast and false prophet being cast into the lake of fire in chapter 19 of Revelation being history and not future tense.
1st John 2:18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.
And in chapter 4: 1Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many FALSE prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye {5720} the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that [spirit] of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
And in 2nd John 1:7 For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.
As you can see by what John said, the antichrist was already in the world, age at that time and so was the beast and false prophet but they are in the lake of fire as I tell you this, with satan soon to follow at the end of the little season of deception of the nations in which we now find ourselves.
It is high time to do what Apostle Paul told the Ephesians of that time, day, age, generation in chapter 5 verse 14
Even Apostle Paul's description of the so called "rapture" which actually is the catching away is written to the people of that day, age, generation, time.
1st Thessalonians 4:15-17 The Return of the Lord
15 By the word of the Lord, we declare to you that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who have fallen asleep.
16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will be the first to rise.
17 After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord.
1st Corinthians 15:51Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,
52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
In conclusion, Since Jesus did as He said He would, then Armageddon is past and the so is the Millennial reign of Christ and His saints and we are in the tail end of the little season of satan deceiving the nations. It is past time to wake up folks, study the scriptures to show ourselves approved unto God Most High and our Lord Christ Jesus, so that we wont be ashamed and live with regret for eternity.

Yup! Someone pin this comment! All of my religious studies professors in university explained this to me. They also hated the book of Enoch because (and they weren’t even Christian) they don’t believe in its validity due to a lot of it being so outrageous and think it’s a form of or an altered version to what an original “Enoch” book could have been. They also didn’t understand the idea of angels having free will rather than being agents of god because saying so goes against what’s told to us through the Jewish tradition!

The Bible makes it clear that a human descendant of David, not God, was the father of Jesus. The terms, "seed" (σπερμα = sperm), "flesh", "root", "fruit of his loins", and "offspring" mean that Jesus was the biological son of Joseph.
"This is the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David."
      (Matthew 1:1)
"They said, "Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”
      (John 6:42)
"Therefore being a prophet [David], and knowing that God had sworn an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne."
      (Acts 2:30)
"For Jesus took not the nature of angels, but the seed of Abraham."
      (Hebrews 2:16)
"Of David's seed hath God, according to his promise, raised unto Israel a savior, Jesus."
      (Acts 13:23)
"Concerning his son Jesus Christ, who was made of the seed of David according to the flesh."
      (Romans 1:3)
"Remember that Jesus Christ is the seed of David."
      (2 Timothy 2:8)
"I, Jesus have sent my angel to testify unto you these things in the churches; I am the root (progeny) and the offspring of David."
      (Revelation 22:16)
“We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote; Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”
      (John 1:45)
"When Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, thou son of David, have mercy on us."
      (Matthew 9:27)

Jesus had brothers and sisters (not half-brothers and half-sisters):
"I saw none of the other apostles--only James, the Lord's brother."
      (Galatians 1:19)
"Is this not the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are His sisters not here with us?"
      (Mark 6:3)
“Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren't all his sisters with us?"
      (Matthew 13:55-56)

Did this presenter ever read the Old Testament Books Of The Prophets???
Did David have more than 1 wife?
Did Solomon have more than 1 wife and more than 1 concubine?
Every prophet repeats over and over to the kings and religious leaders of Israel: be just to all my people; care for the widows and orphans; share with the poor. In many cases, widows had land which kings and religious leaders conspired to steal. The Babylonians at first bypassed Israel and attacked Egyptians near Gaza. But when GOD’s Commands through the prophets was ignored by the kings and religious leaders, GOD gave Israel 70 years of time out as exile punishment in Babylon. GOD was very clear.

This guy makes alot of unfounded assumptions and people take every word of his as Truth. People these days have ZERO critical thinking skills and basically believe what they want to believe and take " sides" with no ounce of independent thought. I've read the comments on many of his videos and there is zero dissenting or apposite viewpoints. Some of his material is useful in a historical context but many of his assumptions are just wrong and teeter on intellectual dishonesty.

No, the assumptions he makes are extremely well-founded. Founded by the entire history of the biblical scholarly community, save for a few edge lords and apologists.

I strongly disagree with your statement. Name any assumptions and give one example and why and which ‘people nowadays’ have zero critical thinking skills. You appear to be making sweeping generalities with no substantial examples. This gentleman is quite erudite & well versed in his excellent presentations. Could you give a presentation as substantial on any subject of NT ( I think NT is actually great entertainment if you have any appreciation for fiction)? Well actually both NT & OT ( the idea of a NT & an OT is just a rather insulting deprecatory statement such as could be expected from Christianity.

He knows he is talking about nonsense books and doesn't believe any of the books of the Bible. But there is money in religion so he won't denounce Christianity and superstition.
