The one way mirror, on the viewing side, that needs to be in a separate room that is kept dark, that’s the only way I’ve seen them work in real life. Often there is kind of an airlock that is also kept in darkness, but instead of the airlock keeping out contaminants or a vacuum it’s keeping out light when officers or detectives open or close the door, otherwise the room would light up when they walked in from an adjoining hall ruining the illusion and allowing the subject to see the spectators.
