I include windshield cleaning and treatment to my routine maintenance schedule, and do it about every 6 months. Having used a number of different products (including Rain-X) for the treatment part, my favorite product is the Griot's Garage glass sealant. It last so much longer than anything else I've used - much longer than Rain-X in my experience. Water continues to fly off the glass for many months after applying. I live in Seattle where it rains every once in a while, and many times I don't need to even use my windshield wipers at speeds above around 35mph. It's great.
The best I used was on a new car that I went very, very overboard decontaminating the windscreen, called Angelwac H2GO. It was doing the rain off beading at 20mph and more. It's supposed to last for 3 to 4 months, but because of the over the top cleaning I did it was working over 10 months. Tried to do again and not so thorough over a year later and it only lasted about three to four months and above 40 mph😂 These sealants really do need a completely decontaminated windscreen 😂😂
This was actually the only way I could get rid of some nasty water spotting. It’s unbelievably effective! I did end up scratching 2 of my windows with the 0000 steel wool because I wasn’t careful enough to keep it lubricated. My fault entirely. Thanks for sharing this 👍👍👍
To all: RainX makes your rubber wipers chatter like crazy. I use cheap spray on turtle wax which doesn’t last as long but the smooth silent wipe is worth it.
You might try increasing the pressure on the wipers by slightly bending the wiper arms ! I have used RainX on literally hundreds of fleet vehicles, over forty years. Nothing in its price range can compare with RainX, IMO, even without the fussiness of pre-polishing the glass. Wash, Dry, RainX !
I came back to this video just for this comment, I detailed the windows soaped them down dried it up wiped down with glass cleaner, clay barred then glass cleaned again. Applied the RainX repellant and Noticed once i put in my new wipers it started chattering.
Thank you so much for the information!! Well presented, very good quality video. :). Now I feel like I can clean my windshield and finally get it to shed rain!
I use BarKeepers Friend as part cleaning of my rifle & Shotgun Barrels. It really takes some of the Tool marks out of my barrels. These are NOT HIGH GRADE HAND LAPPED BARRELS but off the shelf guns. It makes a HUGE difference when cleaning them, I also use other chemicles.
I like that your video shows how to clean using products that you may already have around the house. Good tip on using the barkeeper friend also. I will try it on my Cruze so I can TURBO with confidence .🚀😎Thank you.
Bar keepers friend also comes in liquid spray form. I’m going to try this out. Our new car came with some annoying build up on the windshield and is driving me crazy. Polished it with a DA and still bad. Needs a good decontamination.
As far as the sprayway glass cleaner goes, I've noticed the particular bottle with the pump handle you're using doesn't foam as much as the traditional aerosol top.
I FORGOT ABOUT STEEL WOOL! Like 10 years ago I did something well to my windshield with rain-x and it was great. The last 3 years I've trying to figure what I did. I'll have to do this again and try out your BarKeep I'm sure I used somethingl like it but that seem like something I should have anyways for metals and stuff.
After applying Rain-X (and remove / buff as the video), the windshield wipers chatter horribly (windshield wipers are about 5 weeks old). If I don't apply the Rain-X after cleaning, the wipers don't chatter. But of course, then the light rain does not bead. Any advice?
Any tips for getting bug guts residue off of a vehicle's paint? Even when I clean a smashed bug (especially if it's been on the paint for awhile) off the paint the paint never seems to be totally clean...almost like a water spot.
WD40 gently with soft white cloth (so you can see whats coming off - if you see paint color = STOP), sort of soaking the bug residue. Clean the WD40 off after with a paint safe method. Works on adhesives, tar etc as well. Let the WD40 do the work, keep the area mildly saturated till the residue is gone. Stay gold.
I had a windshield replaced by safelite repair, before it could cure a child put their handprint on the windshield, now I can’t get the handprint off. Any suggestions?
@@Shoptoolreviews I specifically wanted to get the water marks off the windows, so I will be doing it this way next week maybe. But I'll be getting the 0000 and bar keeper's for sure!
Tried this yesterday. Bronze fine wool and BKF and water. Now have tiny scratches all over my windshield. :/ I do not understand what went wrong. Proceed with caution!
We mentioned several times to use ONLY 0000 steel wool. This is the finest steel wool and won’t scratch. If you purchased Fine, that’s probably 000 and not 0000.
You could probably go straight to the steel wool and slurry, but we like to get the windshield as clean possible first. Some stuff will come off without the steel wool, then you can just focus on the spots that are left. Thanks for sharing.
It just occurred to me that I should apply a product to outside glass of home windows for the same purpose. I do use the razor blade to remove stuff from the window. Any thoughts on how to deal with scratches? I had a sex-crazed male bird get all crazy about his reflection on my house window
UPDATE: I tried this method today and...it DIDN'T WORK!!! Perhaps it was because I used the liquid version of BarKeeper's Friend?!? That's the ONLY difference between my method and the one in the video.
I would recommend the powder. We never had good results from the liquid/paste. Make the powder into a thick slurry, and that should work. Thanks for watching.
Hand sanitizer works great on tree zap, dap it right on the zap and wait for a few seconds and wipe it off, some spot (sap)may take a few cleaning due to the length of time it's been on the car.
_AAAaarrgghhhhh.....you didn't turn on the windshield wipers!😣_ Let me explain. The _'Shop Tools Review'_ gentleman did a great job showing some of the least known tricks of windshield cleaning---particularly the *razor blade* and *0000 steel wool* methods. But(!) although he did unintentionally show one of the big drawbacks of using _Rain-X_ (or similar windshield coatings) he didn't show what I think is the second of the two biggest drawback of using _Rain-X_ on windshields--- *the smearing.* Using _Rain-X_ does, indeed, make water bead up on glass, BUT if you don't use your wipers, you will never have even the momentarily clear vision they afford; *you will always be looking through semi-obscured glass, covered in thousands of raindrops busily scooting their way up the screen,* and, b) you will *_never_** have a clear windshield if you **_do_** need or want to use your wipers.* The reaction of the wipers against any type of _Rain-Ex_ or other supposedly 'rainproof coating' will render a windshield dangerously obscured when wipers *_are_* used---it smears like h

For cleaning glass, a 50/50 rubbing alcohol and h2o works great with a lint free cotton rag. Use distilled water if you can.
Years ago I used baking soda like you used Bar Keepers Friend. Maybe not as effective but it’s what I had on hand.

Been using this since I first found it in the late 90’s. Put on a fresh coat every third time I wash my car.

Solution: Don’t use rainX. Use the cheapest spray on turtle wax(no carnauba). Coat your rubber blades too. Silence is golden.
How can I remove small scratches from interior truck side windows that were scratched when removing the tint?
Outstanding vid Tim.....
Great technique N tips..
I always wanted to know how to "properly" deep clean car glass..
Now I know!!!!?
👍😀
I bet this would work well on a glass stove top (minus the Rain X of course)
I'm wondering if baking soda would do the same job as the Bar keeper's friend.
clay bar i find easier
Doesn’t always work though, it can only do so much.
His way is cheaper though.
Great video!! Will try the BarKeepers method on my car windows. Does the BarKeepers have to be powdered or can I use the liquid version?
Liquid bc if power then need to add water to make it liquid
I do it kinda like you do , but i like yours better.
That's what she said 😂
can I do 'water spots' with STEAMER?
So did Sprayway stop making the foaming aerosol? That's all I've ever seen. I've never seen the trigger bottle like this.
The trigger bottles are not good. The traditional bottles still foam up, and works the best.
The glass cleaner can, the steel wool and blade all the hood 😂
The Sprayway in the other type of can (original) foams well. I’ve also bought that bottle in your video and it didn’t foam hardly at all.
Ever try glass stove top polish?

No, it is not. Comet will scratch glass and other surfaces.

Can we use BKF to clean the inside of windshield which is tinted?
No. Distilled water with microfiber only. Else, you scratch the tint
