I've often wondered why comedians are often people who have had difficult lives or mental health struggles, and the older I get the more I realize it's because taking a more playful, unserious perspective on your challenges is actually a very effective coping mechanism
"We are all born creative, curious, and hungry to explore the world." Such a beautiful notion, and she's definitely right. What are we doing to each other and ourselves that this sense of wonder doesn't continue into adulthood?
"You might ask yourself, how's playfulness connected to being creative and resilient?" If you're asking yourself these questions you should definitely watch this talk.
The conditioning that has lead so many to idea of perfection has kept people leading lives that have no creativity out of fear of failing - but there is no fail!
Playfulness in my connections with friends has been a very important part of our bonds. And after hearing this talk I realise it's helped so much in the way we've resolved conflict too.
I am grateful that in the last decade the push for funding in schools to ensure more creative programs has increased. Thank you Dr Russya for this beautiful talk.
I am 27 years old and desperately want to explore the world being creative in the country that people act as robots and it’s difficult for me to get a job there if I don’t qualify learn boring stuff that would help people here to get a job very easily. I’ve been struggling with my life in Finland for 6 years. Then I look people around me (my relatives, my family, my friends...) asking why they’re so happy even they probably are in the same situation as me but react differently and people who are doing jobs that are considered the least interesting ones but they look happy all the time. Yes, I couldn’t stand the boring jobs but keep asking myself the question “ if everyone refuse to handle the boring, less creative tasks then who’s gonna handle because definitely someone MUST handle them”. I watched a lot a lot of video like this and struggle still. The video is great but not realistic actually. It’s time to accept that there are the people who love those boring jobs and people who are creative. Live whatever life you think fit you the most and forget about whether I’m creative or not and stop comparing yourself to others, wondering she’s cooler because she’s very creative, experienced. Just the theoretical lesson, wake up and face to reality
But just having a boring job does not restrict other aspects of your life .. At most, the average person’s job should take up no more than a third of his working day... And eight hours go to sleep. That leaves eight hours of the day still available. The rest is up to time management of the individual.
There was so much more depth to this talk than I was expecting from the opening. That is my own bias coming through around how ‘play’ and ‘creativity’ translate into purpose and meaning. Quite eye opening.
I really like how she talked about the way little joyous things keep us playful and curious. There is a lot of happiness to be found in those small moments, it's nice to have this reminder.
The stuff about a playful state of mind benefiting the creative process really struck me. I never gave much thought to how that creativity exists in people but it's very true, all the most creative people I knew are wonderfully playful.
Creative approaches can benefit all sorts of areas in our life, even problem solving in a corporate setting! I'm so glad someone is talking about that and I hope it catches on and is encouraged!
I've had a pretty difficult year, and the more I've focused on cultivating a playful mindset, the more I've found myself overcoming challenges with relative ease.
I have to read the transcript because of auditory issues but reading and seeing her dance and flow on stage brought joyful tears to my eyes, I love this way of thinking!
Yesterday I saw this artist had take photographs of different tourist attractions and made them look like different things that were really quite funny. I couldn't help but be inspired my the artist's way of seeing things in a different way, I imagine their problem solving is on point!
I believe what she is trying to say is that: a) Life doesn't end with maturity. And it is worth remaining as open minded and hungry for the new as children. I can imagine that otherwise you just stop in mental and physical development. And it is sad to see 30 years old person, who find a job, find beloved one, maybe have a children and stuck in this triangle - nothing more to dream of. b) The only way to find creative and innovative solutions is actually to be creative. How? New experience, new impressions, new emotions, new information etc. which actually expands your reality and makes possible to think out of box. That's the point
The statistic that correlates the lack of early childhood playtime and criminal activity is insane and I'd love to see where that information comes from.
“Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine, and at last, you create what you will.” -George Bernard Shaw
Such a beautiful approach to life and thinking, if only more people could have this perspective, I think the world would be a much happier and interesting place!
I definitely believe what she's saying and like to think of myself as playful in this way. I think it would be great if more people were like this but I think once that gets stamped out of people it's really hard to bring it back out. Maybe they all just need to watch this!
There are some really wonderful things that happen when you approach everything in your environment with positive curiosity! Loved hearing this and all the other ways that curiosity can be applied for self-betterment
Play is how children try things out without consequence. Adults need to feel that more- we no longer live in a world where we get a job and stay stagnant until we retire, the world now is so fluid.
One of my favorite music Artists is Bjork for her Brilliant creativity... And I have other favorite bands and singers for their creative genius as well. Fugazi is my favorite band for over 20 years now.
I think playfulness has its time and place and unfortunately society has kind of shaped what's around us in to this serious reality where opportunities for playfulness just aren't there.
Some of her examples about living creatively - jumping in puzzles, dancing under moonlight - just make me think of manic pixie dream girls and it's making it kind of difficult to take what she's saying to heart.
@@whatmotivatesyou6449 yeah, I think with programming it's helpful to find ways to allow your mind to think differently to how it usually thinks about a problem.
This sense of playful and free movement just calls to me, then I get all involved and next think I know I am wanted to learn and take dance classes. There I am taught the ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ of dancing and compared to others, then my free movement is associated with judgement and soon, I no longer want to dance because it becomes crippling. This is a story that has been constantly repeated in my creative journeys :(
To play again because life is full of surprises. Find and live the unconditional. Its a bit lonely over here and I foolishly judge myself because I should be more conventional.
It's been a long time since I jumped in puddles or danced under the moonlight, and longer still since I wrote a story or painted just for the fun of it, I think she's on to something!
I've often wondered why comedians are often people who have had difficult lives or mental health struggles, and the older I get the more I realize it's because taking a more playful, unserious perspective on your challenges is actually a very effective coping mechanism
i love that an actual philosopher is taking note of how creativity is something we can so easily tap into
"We are all born creative, curious, and hungry to explore the world." Such a beautiful notion, and she's definitely right. What are we doing to each other and ourselves that this sense of wonder doesn't continue into adulthood?
we all can do our little bit to bring a sense of wonder back - and it starts with allowing yourself to experience it.
More and more people are realising that creativity is such an open avenue where so much can be expressed, processed, understood.
"You might ask yourself, how's playfulness connected to being creative and resilient?" If you're asking yourself these questions you should definitely watch this talk.
No matter our age, being in a state of play opens up so many positive things for us.
The conditioning that has lead so many to idea of perfection has kept people leading lives that have no creativity out of fear of failing - but there is no fail!

what a wonderful insight! yes playfulness helps a lot in resolving conflict
yes true
yes Basil, so true
Yes, as long as your friends are capable of this same playfulness
Allowing myself to be creative without judgement is one of the most liberating feelings ever.
I am grateful that in the last decade the push for funding in schools to ensure more creative programs has increased. Thank you Dr Russya for this beautiful talk.
"being physically playful helps to maintain a playful state of mind" thanks for sharing that empowering advice.
thank you, my pleasure

I have heard it said, what you seek is most often found in where you are seeking from!
I can't believe this was suggested to me. Was just debating with my Brother about how all people are creative. Can't wait for him to see this!
And I'm HOOKED. What a star!!
What a magical being! One we could all learn a lesson or two from.

If living a creative life will help me find the same beauty and authenticity this woman has I'm all for it!
Go for it!! and thank you
The way she started this talk... Had me hooked. What a lovely human!
thanks
Creative approaches can benefit all sorts of areas in our life, even problem solving in a corporate setting! I'm so glad someone is talking about that and I hope it catches on and is encouraged!
Yes I wish also It would be more applied in corporate settings!
Creativity is the most important thing we can encourage within ourselves.
yes, it is probable the trait we need most as humans to survive or better to thrive
I also think it's important to remember there are different ways to be playful and curious! All of them have their merits as Russya points out here.
I've had a pretty difficult year, and the more I've focused on cultivating a playful mindset, the more I've found myself overcoming challenges with relative ease.
that's wonderful that you found more resilience with playfulness
I am so glad that playfulness is helping you through a difficult time! Stay playful and all the best to you!
Her words and her movements are so elegant
thank you
And this is why we lack with critical thinking! The last 10 years of politics should show how important is we encourage this within society.
I love the way she opens this talk, such whimsical imagery that definitely suits her persona!
thanks so much for that kind comment
A playful state of mind can be difficult to maintain the older we get. Thanks Dr. Connor for the reminder!
my pleasure! Age is only a number
I have to read the transcript because of auditory issues but reading and seeing her dance and flow on stage brought joyful tears to my eyes, I love this way of thinking!

I wish we could just start to change the way we're educated. I feel like a lot of that playfulness gets beaten out of us during our school years.
Yes, it would be great if your education systems would reflect what we know about the importance of play !
Yesterday I saw this artist had take photographs of different tourist attractions and made them look like different things that were really quite funny. I couldn't help but be inspired my the artist's way of seeing things in a different way, I imagine their problem solving is on point!
I envy people who are just naturally creative, like the way they approach problem solving and just how they view the world.
we are all born creative ... somet6imes we just lost the connection to that part of ourselves
some really great points here about the relationship between playfulness and mental flexibility
Absolutely, I'll be sharing this on my facebook page... taking yourself too seriously takes years off your life, I'm sure of it!
Thanks for sharing
I think a big part of why everything was exciting when you're young is that you're doing it for the first time.
yes that's true, so as adults we have to nurture a different kind of "excitement" ...and maintain curiosity and joy in our explorations
I really liked the way she walked us through the childhood curiosity. I wonder why that gets weeded out of us.
I hope to live in a world of openness. Don't have a lot of faith based on history continuing to repeat itself.
This is something that really makes sense on TH-cam and what really cool

@@dmitrykuzmin7224 well said !
She is amazing, fluid and elegant.
thank you, hope you out playing!
I'd like to have fun too, though don't care to be that playful in public. My mind however has an amazing sense of humour and fun!
The statistic that correlates the lack of early childhood playtime and criminal activity is insane and I'd love to see where that information comes from.
A friend of mine just shared this with me and I'm so glad they did, has given me a nice bit of reassurance as to how I'm living!
thats great!! you got a could friend ;-)
I feel inspired and almost refreshed after watching this.
thanks, that makes me happy!
Absolutely Russya! If you can choose how to behave and how to perceive the world why NOT choose a creative outlook?
Yes, because with an creative outlook there is always something to discover, explore and be curious about ...
I relate to this so much and I've noticed as I get older it takes a bit more to hold onto my playfulness but it is so worth it.
“Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine, and at last, you create what you will.” -George Bernard Shaw

I just adore this womans energy - she could be an ancient Greek muse like Calliope 😍😍

yes it is so true - the demands of the world to constantly shift and change are increasing ... so we more than ever need to be playful
We have all been looking for ways to release stress and being playful creative sounds good to me. Bring on the finger painting!
....and , did you enjoy the finger-painting?
have you tried it it? how is the playfulness coming along?

Our minds are programmed to look for the familiar. Looking for unconventional solutions will always be a stretch.

This is exactly why governments need to allocate more funds to the creative arts!
yes the world would be more joyous if arts founding was as important as math!

she is so cool...
How interesting that "play" or "free time" at school has reduced by 70% over the last 20 years. Wasn't the best part of school play time?
It just sounds like way more fun, doesn't it?
In my humble opinion I think grown ups need play time as much as children. Stress level would decrease immediately.
you are so right- adults need play, it makes us more resilient and courageous
'there is a common perception that playfulness is only for children' - yep, and as we get older we are conditioned to give up this part of ourselves.
so lets not be conditioned but as spontaneous as we once were...
It's been a long time since I jumped in puddles or danced under the moonlight, and longer still since I wrote a story or painted just for the fun of it, I think she's on to something!
Wonderful madam ..
Fantastic!

Do we have our "playfulness" socialized out of us at school?
yes unfortunately in our current world, we have lost touch with the benefits of daydreaming, playing, tinkering or artful making
