- Watch for my surprise verdict of this Dremel Chainsaw Sharpener review! I'll go over the ins and the outs of this Dremel A679-02 sharpener. Assembling and using this tool then actually sharpening my chain saw. Finally, I'll cut through a 22" white oak that was recently felled with the newly sharpened chainsaw and let you know my final thoughts, which may come as a surprise to you!
Dremel has recently released an A679-03 kit, which is essentially the same kit.

Been using one for 18 years . It’s quick and gets the chain sharp
It does in fact work!
Great review. Bought this kit but only because I was not sure which size of stone I needed for my chainsaw.
Glad it was helpful!
I agree 100% with your conclusion, but even better are the diamond bits which aren't expensive, don't spark or heat up the chain teeth as much and you can usually follow the 30' or whatever angle line stamped on the chain teeth by the manufacturer 👍
Great point!
You’re spot on as with the guide sitting horizontally with just deaden the chain thanks for sharing as I would have dulled my chain otherwise 👍👍👍👍👍
Glad it was helpful for you!
Dremel makes a special kit to open their packages -- works well on other packages too
I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that, thanks!
lol.
giggles and wiggles
lol...Truth be told, those packages from yesteryear were a nightmare. Some Congressman got cut or lost his mind one Christmas, then he passed some legislation. Who knows. In my day the poor kids got Chemistry sets that were actually real while the rich kids got Rock-em Sock-em Robots. We blew up their robots...
A dremel tool diamond disc is great for opening dremel packing. lol. Just kidding.
that special kit comes in the same package though
Very helpful info. You helped me cut to the chase. Thanks. I have the kit but sharpen by eyeball.
Thanks for the feedback!
@@ExtremeDIYGuy - I have a follow up question. I've just started using the dremel but it looks like the grinding wheel was cooked after 3-4 sharpenings. Do you think that's normal given the size of the grinding stone? Makes me think I'd be better off with a file. Thoughts?
Use the guide. The side angle is easy enough to do free hand, the shims and gauge are basically worthless, and the diameter of the stone does decrease with use. However, the guide works something like the tool rest on a lathe, allowing you to easily keep a consistent filing height for the correct top angle. Use your eye to adjust the height and keep the axis parallel to the top plate. Then keep the guide rested on the top plate, and focus on maintaining proper angles and steady pressure. If you are good with a file, this will be fairly easy to adjust to, but it still takes a little practice. I have been using the Dremel to sharpen my saws for almost two years. With badly damaged teeth, I use a file to get it close. The Dremel is not necessarily faster than a file, but the result is much more precise. The saw cuts better and the chain stays sharp longer.
Thanks for the advice. It sounds as if you have a lot of experience with it. I agree that the guide acts somewhat like a rest a lathe. I just found that I got a better edge with the stone alone. Thanks again.
@jeffwalsh3172, I just asked this question about the stone wearing out fast. I'm using the smaller 7/32 bit and it was used up after about 4 sharpenings. Is that your experience?
@@johnmartin9451 Yes, they quickly wear down to a smaller diameter, and then wear out completely. I have moved on to primarily using an Oregon 610 bench grinder. Diamond bits may last longer.
by the time you get it assembled I’m finished sharpening with my file 😁
That's my conclusion as well.
Liked the review, for someone like me that is a bit newer to chainsaw sharpening the guide is nice to keep the right angle. I've been using the kit for awhile now on chain saws to do a quick touch up. I think your right if your experienced in the angles and hand sharpening with a file just buy the stone and give it a go.
Glad it was helpful!
Most chains actually have a line on top of each tooth that show the right angle the tooth should be at it also shows when the chain is done I think because I have used chains that cut very well sharpened up to that line, not much tooth left. I seen the line on your teeth. Also the grinder turns clockwise and while you grind, it should always be turning against the tooth and not away. That ways your tool rest is always on top of the tooth and not on the depth gauge which can change as you adjust them (or not.). The more you sharpen teeth they will get slightly lower to the bar and then the depth gauge will prevent the tooth from digging in if it is not lowered. I use a second Dremel with a sanding band (I think they are called) that do the job quickly using a gauge to check them,, Also, when holding the grinder it is important to hold it at a slight angle up or down to match the angle of the tooth keeping an eye on the point, it should be needle sharp when done. I like to mount the saw facing left in a vice as you did with something under the motor to brace it up, then it does not move while sharpening and it is at a good height.
Thanks for the tips, I'm sure many will find them helpful!
I appreciate your comment on the correct rotation direction of the stone vs the tooth. Half the videos have the cutter on the left side of the grinder, and half have the cutter on the right side of the grinder (your way). And this video is half/half on the same saw. I found a video made by Dremel, and they have the cutter on the left side of the grinder. which seems to leave a burr on top that has to be removed. Maybe Dremel's video is wrong too?
the chainsaw gauge is great for beginners or the inexperienced. I thought the video was very detailed and showed me everything I needed to know. thanks.
Thanks! I'm glad it was helpful!
I guess just follow the angle and you’ll be okay. Thanks for your honesty. I bought it but will only use the bit. Doesn’t most chainsaw blades take the orange bit ?
The fine orange bit is what I have been using and just following the angles has worked well.
your video is a good example of how-to videos used to be made. good instructions. Today, there are newer videos of using this Dremel Chainsaw sharpener tool but they skip important instructions and do goofy things for the camera (probably to make the video more entertaining in their opinion) which a waste of the viewers time
Thank you, I really appreciate the great feedback!
Could some kind soul tell me the thickness of the shims?
I never had or lost mine.
Awesome review man!
Thanks!
Great video but should have made a video of cutting with the chainsaw before sharpening and after sharpening. Overall the video was very informative and helpful.
Great suggestion! Ill keep that in mind for a future video. Thanks!
Agree 100% on everything. Just too bad I did not see this video before buying the kit. The instructions on the newer version are useless (refers to TH-cam, not kidding!), and intuitively I did everything wrong. LOL. Got the chain sharp just free handing it. Moving the saw to sharpen the other side is not necessary, IMHO. Easy to hold hand/tool at +30 vs. -30 degrees.
I think free handing it is the best way to go at least in my case.
I liked your review.
As a Wildland Firefighter Sawyer I am not crazy about your safety practices on bucking a tree. PPE is a must even for the average person.
Get some hearing protection, helmet, chaps,
Thanks for the reminder, I at times get a little lax with PPE.
Good information, thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
I agree. The Dremel kit is worthless. Just buy a diamond impregnated 3/16" bit and sharpen free hand. Easy to follow existing chain angle without cumbersome angle guide..
Spot on! That's the conclusion I arrived at! Just get the bit!
But a 3/16 rat tail in the dremel?
That should work if you can get it to stay in there
I also don't use the guide. Its easy enough to see the angle you need to hold the tool at.
Exactly!
I find if you set it all up on a brandnew chain ur allmost there
A fresh chain is a good first step!
I thought the kit worked well. You can sharpen free had with no guide. However, some people aren’t the brightest.....it’s nice to have the 30* like so the angle gets done right.
I think you are correct, the kit may work well for the inexperienced but not for those who already can "eye" the correct angle. overall though, I still think it's not that great. I do think the stones, used individually with a Dremel tool are pretty awesome!
Has anyone ever told you that you look like Mel Gibson? You even sound like him
Never heard of that before 🤣 but I guess I could see that
