I've been Dremel sharpening my Chains for many years! I found it to be much faster and far more convenient than a hand file. I previously used one of several older model corded Dremels and generic mini-grinders. Then got a cordless Dremel 8220 w/ a backup Li-ion battery, so I've got plenty of power and run time w/o having to use or worry about a cord. I also found that although the cylindrical stone grinder bits worked okay, the diamond bits worked faster and lasted longer for about the same price.
I recently followed you down the Dremel path and got some Oregon bits as well. I've been hand sharpening and always thought that I was pretty good at it. The biggest difference I see is that you can see the tooth get back into shape right before your eyes. It was like adding horsepower to the saw. This morning, I had about 8 more cuts to make in some 12" oak and rather than stopping to re-sharpen, I just pushed through. I really slows down when it's dull. I'm sold for sure.

great vid Chris and Ken! I bought some cheaper dremel stones early on and they deteriorated quickly and some of the tips broke off! then i got the diamond ones and liked them but i'm back to the oregon ones and save the mostly worn out ones for when the chain is mostly done! they get the gullet back enough to finish the chain! GNI !!
Glad you showed the cordless dremel and diamond bit combo earlier. Really handy and quick when you're away from the shop. I like how the diamond bits don't change shape, they just cut less as they wear out.
Just going back thru and watching all the videos. I really enjoy the ones with Ken in them I have a 12v Oregon sharpener I use it sometimes… I only use them to just touch a cutter up Beyond that I hand file. And if I have a chain that’s TOTALLY wrecked. I’ll put it in my bench chain grinder

@@sawsurgeon I use a carbide chain on my stihl 280. I use it for cutting up waste wood like beds etc and the base of trees I have felled. I still use th normal chain on stihl 500 and husky 592 and echo 3510es and stihl msa 220. Don't care about brand just best for class.
I literally been looking for a electric sharpening tool for my saw this weekend, and all of a sudden y'all Pop up on U Tube. I was looking at the Dremel, but I thought it was a cheap tool, but now I might change my mind.
I do the same its a real time saver... I'd slow down a bit on the rpms as it heats up the tooth and case hardens it... you can put a file to it and see if it skates over the tooth... not a big deal and it seems to make the chains last longer in the wood.

Hey guys just found your channel I purchased something like this a wee while ago not actually tried it yet but it came with an angle gauge for the Dremel seeing this video though be getting it out and giving it a shot. Great video 👍🏴
I used a similar tool made for saw chain back in the 70's, still have it and some stones; but prefer a file now. The grey Oregon tips are what came with it and what I purchased. I found the tips last longer, cut way cooler, and saw seemed sharper when I used thread cutting oil on the stone. Stinks a bit, I have to admit. I still have that plug in motor somewhere.
It always gets me whenever I am at a saw shop and see all the chains they grind for people. How someone could cut wood and be dependent upon a saw shop to keep their chains sharp, is mind boggling to me. I have always felt a guy will be more careful also with dirt n stuff if he has to sharpen his own! 👍
@@InTheWoodyard I know some that are the same way...No different then fishing but having to rely on someone else to bait your hook and take the fish off. Are you really even fishing? I love my Oregon 410-120 bench grinder for doing a bunch of chains in one sitting. Not nearly as fast as your Dremel but sure can get a lot of chains razor sharp if you know what you are doing.
I was just milling w Alaskan mill… had to do a unusual cut and put screws into the work…. I got one screw out… forgot the second and my chain was screwed! I’ll have some work to get it to cut again.

Kenneth Carlson, DDS. We specialize in “Getting the Gullet!” Speaking of the original gullet getter…when you guys gonna try square filing the tooth? Or get the Stihl Hexa chain?
Unfortunately the Hexa files are not available in the U.S. yet. The Hexa profile while not faster than square, works very well and stays sharp noticably longer than round ground. I run Carlton .404 full chisel, full skip with either a square grind or hexa profile for bucking dirty/muddy logs at my landing. The .404 cuts better and lasts alot longer than 3/8" when cutting dirty wood. I believe the Hexa file will replace the round file when it becomes readily available. It is easier to master, takes out the gullet as you sharpen, cuts faster, and stays sharp longer than round ground, a win, win, win, win!
Definitely lot faster. I used to use one the Oregon ones that you hook to car battery. Have heard anything about the m12 ones from Milwaukee? I got several m12 tools so was thinking that one. Is the wait difference between the 8v and 12v much? Keep up the good work guys.
Got to love it when a kid drops a big rock down in a hollow and the tree grows around it. SURPRISE!!! Before I gave up the rock had a 1/4 inch trench in it. Lol
You and Tony got me hooked on the dremel. It’s just too easy. Why would we buy faster saws, faster splitters, big tractors with grapples all to be more efficient, and then hand file like a cave man? There is art to hand filing and it probably gets a chain sharper…but time is money. Bringin’ Kenny to the dark side 😂!
HI i have been using oregon stones for years now in my mains Dremal very good indeed As good a a file any day and 10 times faster Can cut back badly rounded teeth after hitting metal or stone but do not get the teeth to hot. So go round all the teeth twice make sure you get the correct size stone for the chain also do not let the stones ware down to much as they will start to undercut the teeth If you are careful and inspect the job as you go they cur as good as a new chain
Mud and rocks makes the saw chain people money! I recommend a carbide saw chain for the extra crappy dirty stuff you've been cutting. Might cut a little slower but it holds up a lot better in the garbage.
Was cutting the ground/dirt for a good 20 seconds probably full throttle and didn’t realize it as I wasn’t used to this 28” bar I’ve been using and it broke all the teeth off the left side of the chain teeth and man it took forever and a day with my Stihl 2in1 sharpener. I hate to junk a nearly new chain so I put in some effort but man would have been nice to use an electric sharpener. The left side is probably 30% left vs the right at 60%. Oddly enough it still cuts straight down even in a 22”+ diameter log
@@williamwallace9620 depth gauges were definitely different heights from left to right. Since I had to file the left side so much further back to sharpen them because they were all broken
I just order the Milwaukee one because I have the m12 tools already. I like to hand file but on-site it definitely be easier to use one these. I also order 3 different kinds of diamond stones.
Hello Chris, try taking your stones and dip them in windex about every 10 teeth or so that should cool the stone and make them last longer and lube also that should make it cut better and last longer....give that a try and let us know how this works
A sharp tool of any type is not just easier to use, it is much safer because you know what to expect when the metal meets the work. I don't care if its a saw chain, knife or lawn mower blade and it really don't matter how you get it sharp as long as it is sharp. GNI
Oregon makes good stone bits and Ezzdoo makes good diamond stones, bot last about the same amount of sharpenings but the Ezzdoo bits do not change shape much, they just get dull. Try both and see what you like.
Yes I did get good results I will say that it is a little slower but I think that it holds the edge better I just am a couple of levels slower than the highest level and I have the 8220 and using the same bits that you are
There are 1600 videos on my channel with hundreds of chain saw cutting videos...ALL of them are with my Dremel sharpened chains...I quit hand filing MANY years ago.
I cut into a rock , next day I dug it out and took it home and used it in a rock garden . Now every time I walk by it I get a laugh out of it . You can see the cut mark very clearly

At great risk, I shall propose this question before my brethren. QQQHave you considered running semi-chisel chain when processing frozen, dirty logs? I'm not talking Green Safety chain, just commercial production chain with a rounded top-plate like what's used on a harvester. I find it to be a lot more forgiving, especially when I'm helping my father, an aging farmer who likes to pre-treat the bark with mud as he skids them with his farm tractor! Where the dirt is prevalent, I try to peel or chip away the bark where I plan to cut, however it's nearly impossible to get it all. Bless'ns to the both of ya's, Tedd

OK, this is the 5th video I watched and I think I have the basics down using a dremel and diamond grinder. But none of you guys take a saw out and show how good it cuts right after sharpening! In this video you could have taught the basics and left off the other two saws and you would have had plenty of time to show me how much better the saw cuts! I am disappointed that everyone wants to show the sharpening but no one wants to show the improvement.....bummer!
Can you hand file after you Drexel them or are they overheated and hardened and hard to hand sharpen? Man Kenny don't throw that chain out there's lots of tooth left. I'd get at least 20 more face cord out of that chain by hand sharpening. 😆 🤣

For 40 years I hand filed all my chains but for the last 10 years I now use a Oregon 7/32 stone bit on a Dremel and will never go back to the old way. This is better faster and easier.
Not hot, that is never been a problem for me but if it is curling up you might have cut too much, all you need is a straight line on the top plate then it is done.

They charge 8 dollars a chain to sharpen them around here.

Chris, you should try the dremol on the other side of the blade. It looks like your spinning into the chain, hence 3 sharpenings.

The 12 v is much better, I need to try the Milwaukee one!
It works better if you turn the speed down, I use the pink ones, just add a little oil on the stone before you start.

Length of the teeth does not matter but sharpness does!

It was at home 220 miles away, this was at Kens.
Why don 't you use full skip saw chains?
Hardwood at -20 zero. No one here uses skip.
Dremmel is the only way to go, fast, works and great for taking down rakers too.

After going back and forth I find barbs and curled teeth. Going in one direction helps reduce barbs.

25000 RPMs is not very liquid friendly. You'd make a huge mess.

Yes I did get good results I will say that it is a little slower but I think that it holds the edge better I just am a couple of levels slower than the highest level and I have the 8220 and using the same bits that you are

There are 1600 videos on my channel with hundreds of chain saw cutting videos...ALL of them are with my Dremel sharpened chains...I quit hand filing MANY years ago.

I cut into a rock , next day I dug it out and took it home and used it in a rock garden
. Now every time I walk by it I get a laugh out of it . You can see the cut mark very clearly

At great risk, I shall propose this question before my brethren. QQQHave you considered running semi-chisel chain when processing frozen, dirty logs? I'm not talking Green Safety chain, just commercial production chain with a rounded top-plate like what's used on a harvester. I find it to be a lot more forgiving, especially when I'm helping my father, an aging farmer who likes to pre-treat the bark with mud as he skids them with his farm tractor! Where the dirt is prevalent, I try to peel or chip away the bark where I plan to cut, however it's nearly impossible to get it all.

OK, this is the 5th video I watched and I think I have the basics down using a dremel and diamond grinder. But none of you guys take a saw out and show how good it cuts right after sharpening! In this video you could have taught the basics and left off the other two saws and you would have had plenty of time to show me how much better the saw cuts! I am disappointed that everyone wants to show the sharpening but no one wants to show the improvement.....bummer!
You can watch ANY of my cutting videos, there are dozens on my channel, they are all saw chains I sharpened with the Dremel.
Back in the nineties I had a 266 Husky and all of the chains I could afford was what my logger friends gave me. You make do whit what you have. Lol

The 12v Milwaukee rotary tool is much better than the Dremel because of all the battery options, and it's a stronger tool.

Can you hand file after you Drexel them or are they overheated and hardened and hard to hand sharpen? Man Kenny don't throw that chain out there's lots of tooth left. I'd get at least 20 more face cord out of that chain by hand sharpening. 😆 🤣
The teeth do not get hard after grinding, Yes you can hand file after.

A file is the only way. However when carpal tunnel happens you must adapt.

For 40 years I hand filed all my chains but for the last 10 years I now use a Oregon 7/32 stone bit on a Dremel and will never go back to the old way. This is better faster and easier.

Not hot, that is never been a problem for me but if it is curling up you might have cut too much, all you need is a straight line on the top plate then it is done.
