The written instructions for this shawl are:
Cast on 9 sts.
Set Up Row 1: K2, kYOk, k3, kYOk, k2 [13 sts]
Set Up Row 2: s1-wyif, k1, YO, k9, YO, k1, s1-wyif [15 sts]
Body
Row 1: K2, kYOk, *k3, YO, s1-k2tog-psso, YO; rep from * to last six sts, k3, kYOk, k2 [4 sts inc'd]
Row 2: S1-wyif, k1, YO, purl to last two sts, YO, k1, s1-wyif [2 sts inc'd]
Repeat Rows 1 & 2 until the shawl is desired size. Bind off using a stretchy method. Block assertively to crescent shape.

Hi Barbara. I'm trying to follow the instructions and I'm confused. It says to cast on 9 st. But row 1 accrual is worked over 11 st. What am I missing?
@@heidicook2395 Hi Heidi. If you are counting 11 sts in the first row then you have a misunderstanding somewhere. My guess is that it’s the kYOk. It only uses one stitch … you knit into the stitch but keep it on the LH needle, YO, and then knit again into the same stitch … it’s a 2 stitch increase. If that guess is wrong please let me know and we’ll figure out where the miscommunication is.
@@WatchBarbaraKnit hi Barbara, I rewatched the video and the KYOK was exactly where I had the problem. I tried to follow the written inductions a couple hours after I watched the video and forgot how to do the KYOK. I went back this morning and rewatched the video and went Duh! Thanks so much for your help! I was going to make my friend a plain crescent shawl and then I saw this one. 😍

came to this video awhile back but was a bit intimidated because I hadn't done anything with lace before. After a few lacy dishcloths and garter stitch shawls, I'm ready! Got some pretty yarn and am super excited to follow along! Great pacing and layout. The written instructions on the video are really helpful too! I still mostly knit with my yarn in my right hand, but have at least attempted putting it in my left for a couple rows ( just because I am such a visual learner ) ! Not feeling completely comfortable with that yet but I am at least trying which is something I didn't do before! THank you!! 😊

I'm quite late to this party, but would love to know how to knit as loosely as you do, Barbara. Many of my problems in knitting come because my stitches are so tight. Fighting them can cause them to fly off of the needles! Thanks for another quality video. Am starting this shawl today.
I don't know if any of these suggestions will be relevant but hey, it's the internet LOL. If you aren't using metal needles you might want to try them. Compared to the average knitter, I am actually a fairly tight knitter. I have to use metal needles with pointy tips and when I knit someone else's pattern I tend to have to go up a needle size or two. Changing the needle size might also help you.
But a third thing that I have found common among people who complain that their stitches are tight is that they are unintentionally knitting twisted stitches. You might want to check out this video: th-cam.com/video/OWGHpsYYXEY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=JGjbDPN6hgS1KgW5 Twisted stitches starts at 17:26

Good morning Barbara, look what popped up when I turned on my computer at work this morning! Somethings are just ment to be. You are so amazing and thank you for making this pattern up, I feel like you did it just for me and it is beautiful. It's hard not to share with others what we love. Wish I didn't have to work today.
Haven't given up yet but after two hrs I put it down so Easter projects get ready. Plan to pick it up tomorrow night. I did get through row 3 several times then ripped it out and started over again. Happy Easter.
Well it has been a week of still trying to get this lace version. Last night I though finally I got it but this morning there has to be something I've done wrong since there are times when the stitches at the end of the row don't work out to the 6 I need. So this yarn is looking like it's about thrashed and I am ready to toss the whole thing. Of course the needles I am using are the crappiest you can imagine and I ordered a set of 4.5m last night. I thought you had a gmail email that I might send a picture I took of this *^*&^ and if you have a minute or more you might be able to see what keeps going wrong. Thank you. Still watching this video over & over so it's good there isn't a charge for each time I hit replay, I'd be broke and I also bought the cheat sheet which I really thought was a big help. Still loving your shows. hugs

Been looking for and easy shawl with lots of pazzazz and I think I have found it. Summer kitting and a Christmas present for a classy lady. Dark blue with a little silver glitter I think. Her favorite combination and fancy enough to wear formal or casual.

Hey, just wanted tolet you know that I cast on a shawl with these instructions in a beautiful pink color from Mad Tosh and I reallyy didn't ccnnect the two until I was knitting it. The colorway is "Barbara Deserved Better" lol A really pretty pink. Using the Work Sock base which is 400 yards and to me looks like a DK. I will say its knitting up fast!

My hand is healed enough to do this very uncomplicated shawl. Thanks Barbara...at least I will try haha. When you design enough of these easy peasy patterns then maybe a soft cover book with all of them would be handy.I like something I can hold in my hands even though I purchase the patterns .
That is an interesting idea, I'm not sure how I would go about that. Publishing is such a complex thing and getting something printed hard-copy is crazy expensive. But I'll never say never.
What gave me the idea was that I have a few Leisure Arts booklets that are 11x8 and contains 40 pages which also includes the copyright and publishing information pages. I love working with that size. Well thanks for answering my question!
I think there are some services that one you have the layout done, they will take care of the printing/mailing on a print-on-demand basis. I think amazon has one and I've seen some others.

It depends on what weight your yarn is, but 540 meters should make a decent sized shawl even in lace weight yarn.

Question about your comment regarding use of stockinette with lace as edge or with alternating rows of stockinette and lace: how do you do the increases without doing the lace pattern to make the shawl grow ? Do you just keep the 4 increases within the first six and last six stitches and do the rest in stockinette ? Do you begin the lace two row pattern on a right side row wherever you want ?
The increases are the edge, the lace does not make it grow at all. The increases and decreases in the lace section cancel each other out. So the part that comes after the * and then says repeat from *, at that point you simply knit instead of doing what is in the repeated section. Yes, you can begin the lace pattern on any right side row you want.
Hi Barbara, you make this pattern look very “not scary” for a semi-beginner. 😊 Here’s a silly question...generally speaking, how do you tell which is the right side and which is the wrong side of a project? I know to put a locking marker on the right side once you know which one it is, but say you’re stitching along and have done a few rows and decide to put the marker on...is there an easy trick to know which is the right and wrong side?
It is easier if you are working stockinette than garter. If you are working in garter it can be nearly impossible to tell, the locking stitch marker is your best friend. With stockinette you look at which side has the "knit" stitch and which side shows the "purl" bump. The bump is on the wrong side. If you are knitting reverse stockinette then the bump would be the right side. As you can see - it really depends on the pattern.

In this pattern the long tail at the very begining , left to work in at the end , is on the RIGHT side of your work when knitting. When it's on the LEFT side when you are purling , that is the WRONG side of your work.

Mel Mack If you use 5 mm for worsted then I think that’s a good place to start for a shawl in DK. You want a good, open drape so the shawl will hang well. Depending on your tension a 4.5 might work too.

I am glad you like the pattern. The slipped stitch edge is purely decorative, it does not make it stretchier - in fact it makes it a teeny bit tighter - but that is good because it caused the edge to curl up more into a crescent If you don't want to mess with the slipped stitch you can simply knit the first and last stitch of the WS rows instead.
Hey Barbara, love this pattern, but if I hadn't watched the video would not have known to slip knit or purl wise on the slipped stitches. I did not purchase the pattern just used the one in your description box below video, think you should check your pattern out to see if it was placed in the pattern itself, if not that would make a big difference in the results, I would think. Just letting you know. Thank you for the pattern and thank you for sharing and as always love, laughter and happy crafting.
In all of my patterns I define and provide instructions for any abbreviation that I use. While it is standard to assume that a stitch is slipped purlwise unless instructed otherwise, I include this clarification in the definition of the abbreviation.

You will need to swatch to figure out what size needle you like with your yarn. I have knit fingering weight shawls with 4s, 5s, and 6s. It all depends on the yarn and what you are going for.

Hello Barbara. I think that you are a very nice and fun person to be around. I really appreciate this lace shawl, and I really want to make it. It's easy to follow; however, I'm having a small problem with the one where you end up with 6 stitches. I know how to do that particular row, where it's the 6-row repeat, yet at the last of where you have 6 stitches, I'm ending up with 5. What am I doing wrong?
Patrice Cooper I’d love to help you but I’m confused as to the question you are asking. Is it a different video/pattern. For this video/pattern the initial cast on is 9 and it’s just a 2 row repeat. So I’m not sure what you are referring to. If you could clarify I can try to help.

The neckline is tight on purpose, that is what pulls it up into the crescent shape. If you want it otherwise you’ll have to experiment! Have fun!

Oncycle Yes. For this pattern the cast-on needs to be 9. It is possible to start with other CO numbers, but it is dependent on what you are doing in the body of the shawl.
Hi Barbara. Thank you so much for this video. You’ve made it so easy to understand except for the ladder-like row at the neck edge for which I don’t see a pattern. Am I missing something?
Those are a result of the edge increases on both the right and wrong sides. They should appear as you work subsequent rows.
Hi Barbara, I would like to try knitting this crescent shawl. After I make my swatch and know what size needles I want, I’ll purchase circular needles. What length cord would you suggest I get to make sure I have enough room on them? Thank you!
The longest one you can find/afford! You can always use longer cords to
magic loop smaller circumferences but you cannot stretch a cord to make
it longer. For crescent shaped shawls, the final rows get pretty long
and you need a cord in at least the 40 inch range.
I love ❤️ this simple lace crescent shawl. I have a question about “slip 1 with yarn in front. “ What does that stitch do to the shawl? I’m having challenges understanding that technique.
It simply produces a pretty edge. If you don't like working the slip stitch you can simply substitute a knit stitch and have a perfectly lovely garter edge.

Thank you so much for all of your kind words. Where to start depends entirely on your experience level with lace. The mittens were designed for someone to try out the mosaic by itself. Next in complexity would be the Lozengy scarf where there is very simple mosaic and separate lace. Believe it or not Love Child is fairly straightforward if you are a shawl knitter. Where I would not start would be Fractured Helix, Ves, or the Quatrefoil hat.
I'm going to try this, being a beginner I get confused with the yarn overs, Barbara do you have to do the yarn over to add a stitch, or can a stitch be added a different way?
