Gerber Lockdown Drive - Gerber almost gets it right.....Again!

  • Gerber has a history of coming out with some fairly innovative multi tools in the last few years. Unfortunately, they seem to fall a bit short of the mark with their newer products. I wish I could say that the new Lockdown Drive bucks that trend, but I feel Gerber has let us down yet again.

Great video Ben. Thanks for sharing.
While I wont pretend to be a MT engineer, i wish we could have a new generation of MTs with the design creativity Gerber but the quality control of Leatherman.
LM has seemed a bit lackluster in their designs, as of late. And Gerber seems to address this, but with some build quality issues

IMO, first and foremost in tool design should be quality.

I have owned this for a little while now and it’s actually pretty good… I haven’t had it close on me while being used to drive something. The tabs for the other tools are just fine after you use it a couple of times. I find that it’s easy to carry and very useful so far. Could it be better…? Of course it could but for what it is, I find it more than satisfactory. Just my two cents.

Been waiting for this review, but i unfortunately had the impression the tool would be a let down. I'm surprised to see they decided to call it the 'Lockdown' and yet fail to provide a locking driver, and those thumb tabs are just obnoxious. It seems like Gerber have no appreciation for customer feedback.

This was made when the Armbar came out (videos of it have existed since 2018) they just released it a year later (same with the Armbar slim). They have yet to do a rendition for any of the tools from the Armbar, lockdown series.

Agreed. It's like they fire their r&d department when its 87% done and then make an almost well designed thing as cheaply as possible. You're absolutely right about it helping their bottom line if they put in that little extra effort. If the quality was even close to Leatherman I would probably own all of those you've shown, but as is no thank you.

  • @Genesis992

I bought this and the pry. They’re so close it’s frustrating!
I think the drive and pry should have been one tool. The Pry with a 1/4” receiver in between both halves of the tool on the inside of the pry/bottle opener
I modded my pry to fit the Leatherman ratchet extension in the center of the pry tool and it’s not bad after adjusting the scales to improve access to the thumb studs

3:33 I edc an Armbar Drive. I use the screwdriver pretty regularly, and I have never once had it fold up on me during use. It's designed so that the tip of the screwdriver is past the centerline of the pivot, and that's what keeps it from folding.
I know people complain about it a lot, but to me at least, it's a non-issue. Maybe it's just a difference in the way we grip the driver as we turn it?

@@badboy-gn8fu My Gerber was from a PX around the time they started making them. I think at the time they were entirely USA made, today I am pretty sure they are assembled in the US with global supply.
As for made in china...yeah, zero government oversight and regulation of production makes for some terrible quality products.
The Mp800 is literally battle-tested and has been heavily used by me on an array of automotive, aircraft, electronic, home-utility, and camping projects as well as general EDC uses like cutting loose threads, chopping off an annoying growth on my thumb, cutting a sandwich, etc. It remains perfectly functional without ever having been torn down and oiled. I think I sharpened the knife two or three times and I have multiple jig-blades for it's attachment point that see work.
The Wave+ is very nice and has seen some minor civilian trials, but I have not put it through any real paces as it is my wearing-a-tux-carry (if I want something light and clean). It is produced in Portland, OR with minimal imported parts, whatever that means.
I know this is a bit more than your "ehRMaghERd CHiiiNa" non sequitur disserves as a response, but I feel that two minutes of googling production locations on my part is worth it to get some real information out there.

Everyone at Gerber is drunk. If there's one thing I know that makes a Gerber a Gerber product is the complete lack of build quality. The tolerances on this are unacceptable. The pocket clip is crooked, seriously. My Gerber armbar drive is used often, but the driver not locking was a huge complaint by everyone...so they updated it to a slim version, and it still doesn't lock. They're all drunk over there. I think every engineer there should have to build a house using a non locking driver till they've been bitten enough times by it randomly folding on them that some sort of pain memory forces them to make better design decisions. Rant over.

I am surprised that gerber doesn’t t listen to reviewer video to refine the armbar and such .......amazing are they so rich ....to not follow the complaint of users
Because ideas are good but you can t make perfection at first attempt

SOG, Getber and Leatherman all have piss poor quality in 2021. The only brand that has maintained quality over the years is Victorinox.
The last few Gerber and Leatherman multitools I’ve bought were laughably bad. Probably because I’m used to buying higher end knives these days.

Gerber was more concern with the cosmetics than practicality with this tool...probably had a fashion designer on the R&D team.
    Really disappointed with this design.

I can tell you are trying to be fair in your review but the disappointment in your voice is obvious, and justifiably so. If price is the objective then perhaps fewer tools of a higher quality is the answer. Then the consumer could mix and match tools to suit his needs. It would be nice to see a company produce a set of tools that compliment each other with no overlap and let the buyer decide how much hardware he wants to carry.

When it comes to MTs, Gerber seems to be its own worst enemy, which is a shame really. The company makes some top notch knives. Perhaps they should just stick to that.

Guys behind these gerber tools are idiots. Its very promising but theyre not listening to their consumers. Its a waste of money for now. Maybe the next models would be worth it.

Gerbers quality has fallen even since they start building in China. Inferior metals, mechanics and gimic tools that are just junk. So I'm a SOG guy all they way!

OMG, what a piece of shitte, so poorly made and finished, parts and casing is so uneven.
Nobody who can afford a basic victorinox should buy this.
    Design sense :
It looks like it was designed by Gerber China, crazy ideas, crazy sizes, crazy weighting, stupid tabs...
All we wanted was a locking arm bar drive...
This is how you take an OK company concept and show people you can still break it.
It's the 'homer mobile' of the multi tool world. Just an ugly piece of shitte.

The story of the Gerber company, all that profit saved by Chinese manufacturing, lost by lack of designing anything without a fatal flaw.
