Victorinox Hiker vs. Gerber Armbar Trade

  • I had such a great time comparing these 2 products. Because both of them are very high quality. I'm sure that you will be very happy. Whether you get the Victorinox Hiker or the Gerber Qrmbar Trade. The Victorinox Hiker has a better saw, and it is lighter and less expensive than the Gerber Armbar Trade in its red-scaled configuration. The Gerber Armbar Trade, in the other hand, one-ups the Victorinox Hiker with a better driver, and it also has a pocket clip and a hammer.

    I never cared much for the Gerber line. I think the SAK wins in your comparison. Love your videos, thanks for taking the time to create them.

      Thank you, John! The Victorinox is definitely a better deal financially. And I could see a lot more difference in the saw function when I watched the video than I felt while I was using it. And although I still like the hammer, it is less useful than I thought Because it's kind of clumsy to use! So as much as I have enjoyed using this tool, the Victorinox wins for me, too.

    Hmmm, it’s like the SAK figured it out and it works so smoothly for it’s intended task. IMO, the Gerber is more gimmicky; it works too but Victorinox wins by a land slide.

      Unless you're looking for a tool with a good driver. The SAK Phillips is useless. I'll never understand why they even include it.

      I have to admit that I am a fan of the inline Phillips on my Swiss champ. I would almost always pick a cork. Screw over AT handle Phillips. But I recently watched a video that suggested to me. I may be wrong. If you watch to the last portion of the video, you'll see a comparison that convinced me that for the right person a back layer Phillips might be the right choice.

      @@thevineclimber for someone that once in a great while randomly needs to turn one screw and they have all day to mess with it, like in that video, I would agree. But I would never rely on it on a daily, or weekly or even monthly basis. I would say the same about the saw on the Gerber trade. I just need a knife and screwdriver, daily. So I carry the Gerber drive slim. Its a little to small for my hands so I have a Gerber trade on order. I likely won't ever use any of the other "tools" on it.

    I prefer the Victorinox because it’s far less regulated people friendly too and I really like the tweezers. I think the camper is better than the hiker because the corkscrew is more useful for knots ☺️

      @grovesy333 Hey Grovesy! I can't believe it took me five months to respond to you!!!?!! It IS far less regulated because the blade does not lock. I like the tweezers, too. I also prefer the camper, but I wanted to compare to the hiker to have more similar toolsets. It is just such a good deal, with known quality and high reliability. It is hard to mess with a classic!!

    Good comparison between the 2. My choice would be the Victorinox Hiker.
    Also, I don't like pocket clips on pocket knives. They just never felt comfortable when holding the knife in my hand, especially if you're using the pocket knife for long periods of time.

    Hi Anne !!!
    Fantastic video !!!
    From my personal experience, Gerber blades don't hold an edge as well as SAKs
    I tested the Gerber against both my fieldmaster & Walker & in my opinion SKA is a far superior knife. Same for the saw. If I had to depend on one knife to survive with !!! SKA hands down.
    Thank You

      Years ago Gerber knives were very good. They use (as far as I know) 7cr17mov steel or 420J Chinese steel which is a cheap budget steel. Not sure what steel the armbar uses but the one we have has poor edge retention.
      I stay away from Gerber knives.

Just started recently carrying the Hiker a few weeks ago when getting a special scale version from Smokey Mountain Knife Works. It's the Big Foot scales, bought it with the camper. Starting to get a pretty decent collection of SAKs and when I got my Field Master a few days ago I thought I'd swap out the Hiker for EDC, but I haven't been able so swap, I just love my Hiker, great knife!

    This was a wonderful comparison! If I was forced to chose between the two, I'm going Victorinox all day. The saw blades on a Vic, to me, are just about perfect. They cut in both directions efficiently, and are wicked easy to sharpen. And the bottle opener was no contest, IMO. The blade is what really gets me, though. The geometry and shape on Victorinox blades carve wood like nobody's business in my experience, and I've never had that same performance from a Gerber blade. Hope you have a great weekend, Anne!

    On the Victorinox, the saw can be an extension for the awl - making a bigger hole. On the Gerber, this is impossible, as the saw tip is the farther thing from pointy.
    The only Gerber I use is the Dime. Back when it cost $15, and there was no Nextool Mini Sailor, this was the best alternative for the Leatherman Squirt.
    My husband had a Gerber Strongarm, but we can't find it. That was a pretty good hefty knife.
    Nice video.

    • @thevineclimber
      @thevineclimber  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Zoe! Thanks for the comment! You make an excellent point about the tools being used together to accomplish different tasks, and that is something I really did not think of considering. There is also the possibility of extending the saw by using the awl and can opener to attach it to a stick. This would also not be easy on the Gerber. I love your fresh and better perspectives on things.
      The Strong Arm looks like a cool knife. I had to look it up.
      I do not have a dime yet because I have not found one at a good price. I hear that's a pretty reasonable option for people.

    First, excellent video. Second the victorinox is better as the fit and finish is excellent and the saw when it cuts the the kerf, the top of the saw is thinner than the cutting part which means its less likely to get caught in the kerf. Gerber had quality at one point but armbar isnt there. Youre right about the armbar which has better driver options. Thanks for the video and vinny is a fun dog!

    • @thevineclimber
      @thevineclimber  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi! Thank you so much for your nice comments and compliments. I can't believe I missed another opportunity to use the word "kerf" in a video!!
      When I was actually sawing the vine, I didn't really notice the difference, but when I went back and looked at it later, I realized that I was struggling a lot more with the Gerber saw.
      In a lot of respects in this tool is about the saw. If you didn't need the saw, you would have gotten an armbar slim cut or whatever that doesn't have a saw. So it's all about the saw. On the other hand if what you really need is the driver and it would be nuce to have a saw, then the Gerber tool is probably better for you.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I have a Hiker as my dedicated whittling knife. The saw cuts the pieces I want, the two blades are easy to sharpen. Got tweezers if I get a splinter. The hold is very comfortable for long periods of time, a pocket clip would just be in my way and hurt my hand after a while. A locking blade would also not be legal for me to carry in Australia.

    Victorinox all the way. I also dislike pocket clips, they always cause hot spots. There are several options for the SAK, clip attached to the key ring, lanyard, pouch. For me you also need at least the scissors as well as the saw, and I like the metal saw/file also (Ranger). Gets a little thicker, but worth it.

    • @thevineclimber
      @thevineclimber  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh, yes, the Huntsman would be a worthy competitor here also, because it's not much bigger, and you get the scissors. Yes, I never used this saw enough for the pocket clip to become a problem, so I couldn't say about that. But the Victorinox saw is delightful...

    Gerber is evolving, with some good innovative designs, for sure 🪛
    I reviewed the Armbar myself a while ago, and I liked it overall.
    However, for me, the Hiker still wins, especially with the Super SAK Saw, which I use a lot, which has better Ergo's, and so is the best value, overall 😉

      Yes, Victorinox wins for me, too, especoddly since I use the saw a lot more than the drivers. Even if they were identical, the price difference - $38 vs $23 US - would push us toward the Victorinox.

    With roughly that tool set I'd probably pick an alox Farmer for light outdoor tasks. Bit sturdier for prying, a good awl, etc and much easier to find than the Harvester. And going back to one of your earlier videos it'd be worth painting it a bright colour to make it easily spotted on the ground. Gerber QC is often a bit off-putting and in all cases I'd rather have a separate Philips screwdriver, even with the option to use bits. But for most outdoor screws flathead is more common, at least over here.

    • @thevineclimber
      @thevineclimber  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Hello Doctor! I hadn't really considered the farmer as what the Gerber Armbar Trade was aiming at! But clearly you're right, it's the same toolset. Interesting!! The Farmer and the Gerber are actually a bit closer with the metal scales or handles and no toothpick or tweezers. Also, an interesting point about most outdoor screws being flathead. I haven't thought to look at that. All of the chainsaws have a flat head screw (that I can think of).

    Gerber saw works great at removing fishhooks or even a line guide kinda like a SAK anglers fork ended "fish-scaler tool" if you want to skip or have 'lost' a costly pliers multitool.
    I find in comparison the Gerber is less gimmicky having all the tools coming out from the one side in the same orientation with hammer poll. I just use them mainly for arboury work to tighten other tools, add attachments, and occasionally a micro saw while using it as a general-purpose knife.
    The Gerber lacks finesse but feels more 'bomb proof' (can dishwasher clean) and I LOVE the orange.
    Further the Gerber can do work places like Canada with Robertson bits if you travel for work or even live places that use things like hex bits more and more everyday.

  • @simonh6371
    @simonh6371 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Cool scales Anne. I'm not surprised that the Hiker won as far as the saw is concerned, Vic saws are probably the best mt saws. I do like 1/4 in bit drivers but find it a bit incongruous on a tool with a saw, is it an outdoor or urban/work tool? The name implies a work tool and I know some tradesmen find SAK and Leatherman saws good for cutting through drywall but this seems the wrong shape for that.
    I laughed when Finn joined the vid, he's lovely. He was probably wondering who you were talking to. It must be puzzling for dogs when we talk on our phones or to cameras as they understand that we talk to communicate, but they can't see anyone else there, and sense that we are not talking to them. Then again we used to hold the landline receiver to our dog so she could hear if someone she knew was talking and they would call her name, and she would react. So I think dogs are smart enough to figure out how phones work.

      Lol thank you, from me, the knives, the watch, and the butterball! I also prefer the Victorinox. It's beautiful and practical while still being a classic, as you said. And it's also less expensive. Where's the down side? I guess the lack of a pocket clip, and the fact that it does not match some people's' style. I think it's good Gerber is giving it a run... a little competition will probably help both companies! Thanks for watching!

      And now for the embarrassing answer: I use my phone. Z fold 4. I do my video editing on it with Lumafusion, too. I got it because the fold out screen works well with web forms and larger documents for work, but now I use it for everything. I don't even have a microphone.

    My money'd go to the Hiker. I already know how much I enjoy using those Victorinox saws, and while I don't have this specific Armbar I know I've very quickly exhausted myself with my Leatherman OHT's similarly short little wood saw that only cuts on the pull stroke. That Armbar bit driver does look handy though.
    I do happen to own three Armbars, but all of them are Armbar Corks. I almost never drink wine but the charm and ingenuity of those things has me considering picking up the bottle more often 😉. They've got a leverage system for the corkscrew that seems a lot more practical to me than what you get on an average Victorinox. The included scissors aren't so great though, I tend to just use the knife instead whenever possible. They also tend to arrive nail-breaking stiff. Definitely not the same quality you get from Victorinox but I enjoy the clever engineering.

    Hi Anne, nice video as always! No doubt the gerber is a wonderful piece of engineering and i like it a lot, but the Victorinox is much more appealing to all users. The Gerber looks more aggresive, like a law enforcement tool, on the other hand, the victorinox looks more like a explorer/edc tool.
    I personally do not like any 91 mm wood saw, because they are straight, thin and tend to bend under stress. The woodsaw from the Outrider is slightly thicker with a curved profile, making the cutting process easier due to the lenght and shape. Just my 2c.
    Greetings from Denmark!

      Hello, C. F.! What an interesting post? Yes, I think you have characterized the appearance of the Gerber well; it does look more aggressive and like a law enforcement tool.

    Have you notices the back tools on the Gerber are to loose

    • @thevineclimber
      @thevineclimber  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm gonna say they are definitely looser than my Swiss champ. I know that the long screwdriver is going to be easier to close because you get more leverage on it when you push on the end of the screwdriver, as compared to the flat screwdriver/cap lifter. I also feel more secure using my Phillips driver on the Swiss champ as compared to the screwdriver on the armbar trade.
      BUT i also have not had the screwdriver collapse on me. And yet I have REALLY tested the screwdrivers on the champ, and i have not done as much testing on the armbar trade.
      I think this is a long answer to a short question. But while I have not personally had that problem, if you are going to be putting it to heavy use, I would probably look elsewhere. If you're going to be using it for regular daily household tasks, to me, it's totally fine for that. It gets a lot of style points from me.

    I am a bit surprised about your cap lifter vedict. Maybe it's just me, but the Gerber seemed to need way more effort and didn't get it off the first try.
    That aside (i haven't used the cap lifter for it's intended purposes for years.) i think we had the discussion already about a "hammer" like that.
    Anyways, to me such a hammer, just like with the Leatherman Signal, just asks for hand injuries.
    Slipping off of the intended "target" and most likely injuring the fingers.
    And it 's not as effective as a real hammer, even if it weighs less than the Multitool. One could think there is an actual reason why hammers have a handle and are shaped that way for thousands of years.🤡😁
    The bit holder looks actually quite good, but it only has one doubleheaded bit with it... The 12 year old Leatherman Skeletool (no idea what suffix) i have, has a bitholder that is minimal worse (because it can only use the flat Leatherman ones, and it isn't usable while the MT is folded) but it has 2 double sided bits, one in the holder and one in the handle. Which makes it more usefull i think.
    My problem with pocket clips is, that i destroy leather steering wheels of cars with them. (not just with them, but also with keys or even rivets on jeans and snap buttons and metal zips of winter jackets....the way i get out of a car involves turning my hip and so most of the time my right hip comes very close or in contact with the steering wheel.)
    And of course i would choose the Victorinox. (But i am not much into fancy designed scales, i am boring in that regard and prefer the nylon or the standard red scales)
