I wonder if the course designers actually tried this out for themselves before deciding that this was the absolute best course they could come up with.
Top horses and riders shouldn't find themselves struggling so much over the same obstacle.
If the fence in the first video was moved back a stride or two so the horse had time to see it and prepare themselves, fewer incidents would have happened, I think.

Just dumb luck that another horse or rider wasn't killed. It should be exceedingly rare to have serious falls and rotational falls, yet in evening, it's almost expected. I stopped doing 3 day at 16 when my friend's horse was killed at a water jump in front of me. No one should be ok with rising their horse's life with every outing. I have done high-level SJ since my teens, and while accidents still happen, they are few and far between.

I will always say cross country is one of the hardest jumping events because of how dangerous it is. All the jumps are solid but these are great horses with great riders. The course designers really needed to think this out before putting riders through it. There’s a difference between making it difficult and making it ten times as dangerous. Feels almost like their waiting for horses and riders to fail to get more amusement rather then challenge them technically.

I will never understand how people expect horses to 100% nail these jumps everytime especially because of the height, length and the material is very hard. It's very clear to see that the course designer didn't put any thought into this and that we should make them try to jump all of these jumps on horse back. For example at 0:33, the horse and rider could've both been killed jumping that big and long ass jump. This is fucking ridiculous.

Why are people in the comments getting so butthurt over this? These horses are treated like the athletes they are, you people always seem to scream "horses have feelings too, horses are like us." Yet when they're put in a situation where an athlete can have an accident you people go nuts. I agree that this course was made badly but these animals and riders are a team and when accidents happen it isn't any of their fault. Why don't you guys react this way when a football player falls or breaks a leg? I swear, yeah horses are beautiful but if you want them to be treated like us than here ya go.

Too tougher course for top horses tells me something should be done about rethinking the fences. I for one think the skinnys and corner fences should be banned. I certainly wouldn't risk my horse to ride at Burghley or any other event where the course designers are asking too much of horse and rider.

The reason that I dont like xc is that most people only care to win. they dont care about the horses well being and push them to do almost impossible things. Also the course designer was horrible in this video. They set the jump up almost impossibly..

The horses were all struggling with the same obstacles over and over, I don't think the course was properly designed because they should not make them struggle like this over the same jumps

Great sport but the human death toll in this sport in Australia even small is a negative for horse and rider. All obstacles should be collapsible on impact so as to prevent injury to horse and rider.

When 10 out of 10 Horses don't take the jump, there's something wrong with the set-up and how the Horse perceives that jump. The angle is off, the sun and/or the glare or shadow - who knows but this is a bad job of it.

Riders should start refusing to participate in trials that have even ONE dangerous obstacle. The horses are telling them: this is too dangerous, I won’t even try it. I would never risk the safety (and life) of my horse to compete in the cross country events.
