I ride horses occasionally at the ranch my cousin and aunt work at and have gone to horse camp since I was three, I’m 12 now but didn’t go the past two years, my dream is to be a barrel racer but I’m pretty much a beginner and I probably know more than these people
Loved the fat lady that tried to do the same, knowing perfectly well she can not doge quick enough and the old man in the blue shirt that acted unaware that there was a loose horse. Everyone here was clueless and stupid.
@@ginalarson6370 idk what stable or coach these people have but the first time I went to a stable it was drilled into me that you do not run, scream or jump infront of a horse. All the people that were chasing it and the audience members that were shreaking should be barred from the event. Theres another video of a heavy horse hitch losing control, they had a ring full of the hitches and the situation was under control within a minute because everyone remained calm.
The announcer hasn't a clue. If she had instructed the drivers to lead the horses out of the arena instead of sitting in the center of it, so many accidents could have been prevented.
As a prey animal, the horse has a very intense flight instinct; and keen aversion to being eaten!!! With the crowd screaming and people running around after it, the horse naturally saw a goblin around every piece/person in the ring/arena. The announcer's instructions for everyone to go to the inside was very prudent because a spooked, fast moving horse will naturally tend to run wide.
Yeah the guy stood in front of the horse what did he expect to happen. It stop? No that horse isn’t afraid to run him over and that’s exactly what happen
It looked like the horse was scared of his driver, primarily by the bucking. Not to mention the man was horrifically pulling on the bit. He displays a lot of of signs that he is either; extremely untrained and wasn't prepared properly for the show, or he was abused behind the scenes. It might be both cases.
@@staceyevans2315 Apparently the horse was 16 and had been doing these competitions for years already and was known for his good manners. So probably a switch to a new, awful trainer. Or maybe he was in pain. Horses show subtle signs that they're in pain, but when those signs get ignored, they become bigger (bucking, rearing, etc)
What would I do? I would do everything except for what these people did! -don’t grab at a spooked horse -don’t throw yourself in front of the horse -don’t grab its reins/bridle -DO remove all people/animals from the room -DO stay out of the horses way -DO let the horse run itself out
I don't know how people can jump in the path of a scared horse. I had a similar experience once. One of our horses broke lose and ran through the stable area. It came straight towards me - I waited calmly in its way, but only as long as I was sure it could stop. As I saw that it would not slow down I moved out of its way - safety first. Even if I would have wanted to wait it out I could not have done it. It is so scary to see a cantering horse running towards oneself ...

I have never owned horses. I´ve riddin one only once in my life, didn´t like it. In fact, where I come from, we eat horse steaks. But even I recognized that these people were all reacting dumb as can be ...
I have owned horses since I was born I've written them yeah I'm just going to go stand in front of the horse and he'll stop no that panicked horse is going to run right through you because he knows he's bigger than you like serious. Some people are just dum.
I grew up riding a dealing with horses my whole life. Training your horse well was instilled in me and the importance of it. And how I needed to know what to do in any situation. Calm and a steady tone is vital. And if you’re somewhere where a horse goes into panic mode, keep your eye on the horse and have a plan. Don’t just sit in one open targeted spot, get out of the line of fire. And allow the minimum amount of people handle the horse. Less is better. I was also taught that when I’m training my horse to develop a control trigger that will make your horse stop in any situation. It’s a combination of whatever signal you develop between you and your horse and your ability to immediately convince them that they’re safe and ok. Because that’s their mindset regarding you, they’re protecting and taking care of you, they need to the same from their rider. Happy Trails folks.

Horse shows are generally recorded, so if not this guy it would have been someone else. It's actually smart to keep recording if you're not in danger and can't help because there may be insurance questions.

My trainer was there. She said that many of the people in the audience were unfamiliar with horses, and the yelling made things much worse than it should have been. She also said she wished more people did what our division does when one of the show horses gets upset and starts panicking- everyone on the sidelines quietly but firmly says, “Whoa!” Much more effective.
After the fracas started, every single one of those problems was caused by people running around shouting and waving arms or shirts or throwing ropes etc.
+Kimberley Hill The horse ran to the middle of the ring because the other horses were there. They are herd animals and stick close. That is why the second runaway heads for the exit when the other horses leave the ring. Safety together.

The moment the first horse freaked out they should have removed all other horses and people from the ring and let the horse run itself out. Especially as the silly creatures seem to have a habit of careening into each other, most likely caused by the limits that blinders place on their vision. The announcer seemed to be the only one with any sense. At least she tried.

@@brendaclark3085 Your comment is contradictory and non-sensical. So, let's look at this from a 'money' perspective. Attempting to stop a panicking horse, especially one with blinders has a high probability of resulting in human injury, especially if the horse runs over someone, which one did. So that's doctor and/or funeral bills. Not removing all other horses from the ring means that the Panicking horse will do exactly as shown in the video and cause more horses to panic by running into them. So now, not only is there the issue of one expensive horse fatally injuring itself, but several. Panicking horses with blinders constantly careen into into other objects, so in not removing all other horses from the ring, they leave objects for the panicking horse to crash into, leading to more injury not only to the original Panicking horse, but to the other horses and people. So, if they had removed all other horses from the ring immediately, only one horse would have been panicing, and there would have been less for it to crash into and injure itself on. If they had allowed it to run itself out instead of attempting to grab it the horse would have eventually calmed down and stopped. Due to the blinders the horse could not see what was grabbing at it only that something was and that is why it kept running, because the people attempting to catch it kept on sending it into higher levels of panic. The reason the horse paniced so much was because it couldn't see. It was running from the unknown. Had it not had blinders, firstly, it would not have kept on running into everything and injuring itself, and secondly, after it realised there was nothing after it, it would have calmed down albeit slowly. Also, in case you didn't notice, the horse that went down at the end was not the original runner, but the 3rd or 4th. Had all horses been removed from the ring at the start, the last would not have started to panic. Basically, everything I suggested *lowers* the probability of injury and therefore expenses, not only to the original Panicing horse, but to everything else in that ring. So which of us, exactly, lacks logic and understanding?

Again, this question does assume an experience working with horses... @thread: listen again. The announcer dors suggest they "let him run it out" and eventually to have the other horses evacuated. Not what I would have suggested but not my rodeo.
@@brendaclark3085 I am aware that the announcer eventually made the suggestion, but much would have been prevented had the call been made earlier. They would not have been able to evacuate the horses quickly, or all at once, however there is a window of time between the Panicking horse running past the gate and coming back around to the gate in which one could remove one, maybe two horses from the ring at a time. It would require some timing and care, but would be the best option. Leaving the horses within the ring presents more danger than getting them out safely.
Not sure why this was recommended to me now, 10 years later, but as someone who rode and worked with Arabians, trying to grab that horse and yanking on it was the worst possible idea. It would have riled the horse further. The announcer was doing the best she could- get all of the calm horses in one spot and clear(a corner would have been preferable, but most were in the center already). Then my recommendation would have been: trainers form a barrier between the spooked horse and the others with arms out in a T pose like a fence, then let the spooked horse calm itself in the remainder of the arena. It may have taken a couple minutes, but it would have been fine. The horse was trying to bob and weave away from everyone trying to grab it, and in its' panicked and blindered state, that wasn't something it could do effectively, causing the crashing. And for the love of all things good in the world, people, please don't scream at an equestrian event when something goes wrong? Call for help, maybe, but screaming just scares the horses more! BUT REALLY, JUST LISTEN TO THE ANNOUNCER.
All horses in the center and people make a rope hand??????? Did you watch the video a horse spooked that bad n running with a sulky at a chain of people would never of stopped that or any horse in a situation like that there would of just been allot more casualties nothing was stopping that horse only itself in time!!! How many people and other horses and cards did they already knock down??? Silence and stillness was the only thing that would of stopped it and remember a horse feels safest near its herd so evacuation should of been instant
Kate D I saw a pretty bad mess with pulling ponies once. They spooked, jerked the hitch out of the helpers hands, took off bucking and one pony jumped over both sets of traces and went down. Took 20 minutes to untangle.

I have to give kudos to the announcer who seemed to be the only one who had any sort of sense in this situation. I expect professional trainers/riders/handlers to have been smarter than this. Chasing a 1000lb spooked horse with blinders on in an attempt to catch it... really? She was right to tell them to let the horse just run it out and to keep the horse on the outside of the ring. Everything she did here was correct. Too bad these people lost all their marbles in a dangerous crisis.

Screaming woah and flapping your arms at the horses isn't going to help the situation. They should have just let the horses run off their steam instead of making so much noise. I am glad they finally got things under control.
these are horse people? They were pissing ME off and I can't imagine how they kept aggravating those stressed out horses. They should've gotten all the people and horses out immediately, dimmed the lights and let the first horse quiet down. The second horse is probably traumatized as well.

Technically the proper term is driving harness. Anything you put on a horse is called tack. Tack is the general term. Just like anything you put on your body is called "clothes".
To get any of these horses back into a bike is going to take a very long time and tons of patience. That's if the horses show any willingness at all to having a bike behind them again. These horses just might have to be turned into riding horses be use of this trauma.
For those of you concerned about the horses, I found this elsewhere: chucksiemon 1 year ago All the horses were okay,,no serious injuries....actually the last horse running loose was National Champion Driving that same year.... 1 year ago That was Bob Hart - he tried to lasso the horse but missed. The horse went down when it tripped on the harness leathers hanging on the ground. Just happended to be at the same time.... I think it was fine - it was tangled in the harness which is why it fell down. I didn't hear of any horses having more than a few scratches. The first horse is Hizberry Best who I believe was 16 years old at the time and had competed for years and is well known for his good manners. They aren't sure what happened here, but this is a classic example of how even the most bombproof horse can spook. After this accident he was taken out of driving totally. This video was posted originally at ablackhorse and there is an explanation about it there.

Thank you so much for telling how it went. I worked with horses for 13 or 14 years, and I still get anxious when seeing things like this (but unlike these people, I know keeping your cool is the most important rule despite your fears).
That's good news! Saw this video for first time today and don't know where to start with my feelings. But first....what was with that guy w/the hat yanking on the reins?? Extremely obvious he's hurting the horse's mouth and the horse is rebelling. Also extremely obvious the guy is clueless about horses and doesn't know what he's doing. I hope the organizers/organization has learned to pull these accidents-going-to-happen-in-a-few-minutes out of the ring before disaster strikes. When the one horse runs through the other side of the ring center, some guy grabs the left rein which yanks the horse's head hard left but the horse is still running and right into another cart/rider/horse. If that horse had been left alone it probably would not have crashed, but since it was running blind it was bound to crash. Very few people in the ring have much horse experience, very obvious by their actions. You should not be in the ring if you don't have to be. What's with people sitting in lawn chairs in the center? I grew up out West with horses and had the help of my grandfather and dad learning about horses. So when I see urbanites mixed in with horses there's a 50-50 chance of a problem because they are clueless. If you're going to be around horses, spend the extra money to learn about horses from someone who knows what they are doing. You'll have a much more positive experience in the long run.
Thank you for adding this.....I was just in tears watching these poor horses and couldn't tell at the end if that horse was ok after having fallen. What a horror. Just this year a similar thing happened at Devon Show. in PA....the horse leaped the out gate still in harness having broken away from the cart. Thank God no one was hurt neither was the horse......but this stuff happens to the best and it's heart breaking.
Wtf! The people trying to help were literally spooking the horse even more. Getting in the horses way, waving their arms everywhere, trying to grab the equipment on the horse, like seriously. This shows how unprofessional and how unprepared they were if a situation like this ever came up.
Correct me if I'm wrong because I've only been working with horses for a month but shouldn't you do what the announcer says and let the horse calm down/run out of steam on its own.
I was just worried that when so much was in the horses way (buggies, humans, etc etc) that the horses were going to fall and break a leg. I hope that last horse was fine afterwards? The video didn't wait long enough to see it stand back up. Horses are such beautiful creatures.

Yes everyone should have stayed in the center instead of spread out like tat! The only reason the horse started running into the crowded center was to get away from the idiots trying to block it everywhere else! Let it run, calm himself down, then attempt to catch him. Every horse that was run over was run over because of the people trying to catch the terrified horse and scaring him more. Every person he dodged every person he ran over, every horse and cart he hit, sent him into a tailspin of more fear!

why people would think that moving to the outside of the arena, chasing the horses (most of whom have blinders), yelling and jumping and waving all about would help anything absolutely baffles me. if a horse spooks and you fall off, keep calm, move to the MIDDLE of the arena, and let the horse just run a bit. it'll only calm down if YOU calm down. i honestly don't understand how people think chasing it around while it's already frightened will help anything.

The judge was literally the only person who knew what the hell to do. If they didn’t have her that would be even more of a disaster then it already was. People SCREAMING all over the place is NOT going to resolve anything. Just let them run and they will run out of energy. Waving your hands at them and getting ran over by them is only going to spook them more. They should have brought all the other horses out while the first one spooked so he could just run out of energy and it wouldn’t be so traumatic.
Right after the announcer says Let it run... It CRASHES into another horse. (Yes, I saw the guy pull its head to the side) Let it run isn't the answer. Too bad they don't keep a horse at these events that's trained to stop runaways.
The drivers are amateur drivers, and no one was incompetent except the people in the stands screaming. Horse was apparently stung coming in the gate, may have been high even before then of course.
Not one driver had the presence of mind to drop the quick connect, leave the cart in the center and exit the arena with their horse, when this first started. All those coats flapping and towels but no one can figure out how to use a blindfold. The horses still under control could have been blinded and led to the gate as the run away went past. Not one single person has a sharp knife to cut away the harness? A harness can be repaired a broken leg can not. Chasing, flapping arms, all that was counter productive and served only to cause the original horse to come off the rail and hit more horses and vehicles. Just going to the center of the ring to allow the runaway to just run out of gas, and removing one horse at a time. This requires cool heads and a clear understanding of what a panicked horse will do.

16gmailcom Of course the chestnut that started the whole debacle had no business in the ring at all. 0:23 it was PLAIN to anyone with any savvy at all that this was going to end badly. Unfortunately not everyone could see this. At 1:13 that groom in the white hat should know it was safer out of the ring than in it and get the horse out the nearest gate. (this is called situational awareness) The runaway passes him again at 1:45 and he isn't 50 feet from a gate! How many wrecks have to happen before he catches his snap? A horse with blinders in a panic running like the hounds of hell are after him is not looking for a heard to join. Flight instinct has kicked in and until the adrenalin burns up a bit he's going to run. The clearly unsavvy people on the rail shooing the horse off the rail are to blame for about 60% of this nightmare. And the announcer waited WAY too long to order them out.
There are no quick connects on these harnesses, the tugs are wrapped around the shafts, and straps off the surcingle are wrapped in figure 8 to secure them, and may also be run through leather keepers attached to the shaft as well. It is not a simple matter to get a cart or buggy loose hitched like we hitch.
TheSaddler55 EXACTLY! You get 10 points! I saw quick hitches in the harness racing catalogs 20 years ago and used them on a pony cart for just park driving, just a safety feature. These folks have these highly bred excitable horses and no quick hitch? That takes real forethought there. I also carry a razor sharp pocket knife with me every time I mess with a horse at all. I have had to cut a few straps and ropes but it has worked out way better than not cutting them. Even a Girl Scout knows to "be prepared."
I feel so bad for the horses. All of them should have been immediately unhooked and no one should have been screaming. Lots of mistakes that made this whole thing get out of hand

They should of got off the carriages, and taken the horses out of the carriages. If you can't take the horse out in under a minute you shouldn't be driving. I can usually do it in about 30 seconds
Ahh found the first comment here with a smidgen of sense!! I’ve said for years that the risk assessment should advise that if one horse is in a panic then all others should be removed from their buggies and all taken out of the ring. An arena like this one is ideal as all “calm” horses can leave by one gate and the panicked horse guided to the opposite holding ring, much smaller and easier to catch there.
Idiots - shouting, running at the horse, trying to grab the reins - a perfect formula for a disaster! Then it spooked 2 others!!! Only the commentator knew what to do - move everyone to the centre, drivers out and hold their horses heads, no shouting, and let the horses run - they will eventually stop!
Virginia Fry someone who was there commented and said they (the people running at the horse) were mostly trying to keep him on the outside of the arena, but I saw a few people take a grab at the reigns of the first horse for sure. Apparently the first horse was stung by a handful of bees when he was entering the arena, and that’s when he started kicking and eventually running. This situation is just scary and sad. The whole time I was watching it I just kept thinking, “there’s no way a horse acting normally wouldn’t have stopped by now...”

The fact that those people thought that a horse WITH BLINDERS ON and obviously loosing its shit would see them with their hands up and be like, “oh, maybe I should stop since all these dudes are waving more things at me that are probably going to cause me pain” I understand that apparently this was a freak thing that has never happened before; and I also understand that hindsight is 20/20.. But anytime I have my horse around a larger group of other animals/people I’m always thinking what I’d do if my horse spooked, or if another one were to, or if someone did something stupid (I’ve had people slap my horses butt before, but since I wasn’t giving any other signal for my horse to move he only flinched and sidestepped away).. I’m just glad no one was hurt too badly 😭🙅🏼♀️

I once stopped a cantering herd bound horse by standing calmly in his way with my arms out in a T, making a nickering noise and saying, "Woah buddy it's alright, calm down and we'll get you to ur friends." He slowed downa nd let me catch him. But this is a different situation. I was alone in a pasture without idiots.

@@makaylam947 No, it's not to scare the animal, it's to get it to stop and think. We had a barrel horse that slipped and fell running to first barrel (him and the rider are fine.) He got up and ran the entire arena, scared at what had happened. Yes, you can let them run it out, but that can get dangerous. All it took for him to stop was someone literally threw a jacket in front of his face. It made him stop and they were able to grab him and calm him down. They do that for the horse to stop and calm down. The only problem with these driving horses where that they had the carts on them so they thought something was chasing them so it was harder for them to get out of their fight or flight response and realize their humans where there to keep them safe.

When they are bolting like that, they revert to natural instinct which is to trample anything that gets in their way until they are back to something thats comforting and familiar. Which you'll find isn't a human. It'd be their paddock or stable back home. There is no amount of bond or horsemanship that could have helped this. They were too panicked
TheNonMakeupGuru Nope, it can be a human. Personally I stopped 2 bolting horses, both times a mere approach was enough after they ran two rounds and the initial shock faded. Saw other people getting a hold of bolting horses too, and once a new horse ran towards the next horse in sight - in that case it was my horse, another time it just ran towards the paddocks. You'd be surprised what a bond some people can have with their horses.

I do understand very well the type of bond you can have with a horse. But i can tell you that in this situation they will stay in that panicked state with so much noise going on around them and so much crap hitting their legs. As someone who has knowledge about what happened during this class, I must say that the comments on this video are dripping with ignorance. First of all, 'we need a medic please' was for the paraplegic woman. It was her horse that was spooked last. She fell from her cart. Enough said. The man that was seen 'run over' was perfectly fine. At most, he had minor injuries. He was the most injured out of anyone. Yes, this is a trama that these horses will never recover from. None of these horses were ever driven again, I'm sure. That being said, NONE of them were put down either. It is absolutely ridiculous that any of you would actually believe that! That horse that fell down at the end got tangled up in all his equipment, that is why he tripped, and why they held him down. Just after this video ended, they succeeded in getting all the tack off him, and he was allowed to stand up, and they calmly walked him out of the arena. He wasn't even limping. None were badly injured due to this. Nobody was. That is a fact. It is also a fact that I had never seen anything like this before in my 15+ years with the Arabian horse. I haven't seen anything like this since then either. I am a third gen. equestrian to boot, and even my grandma hadn't seen anything quite like this before when I showed her the video. Someone mentioned that this happens with the gaited horses all the time. I can't speak for them, but Arabians are NOT gaited. Don't confuse Arabs with those that use the horrific practices found in gaited horse showing. The first horse panicked due to a beehive found near the entrance. The horse was stung multiple times on the belly, thus causing the initial spook. The people in the arena were stunned at what was happening and were trying to keep the horse on the rail, away from the rest of the horses. Horses are herd animals. The spooked horse wanted to join those in the center, thus why the handlers were yelling and waving their arms. Unfortunately, the horse was so panicked that it was still trying to get to the other horses, thus causing that domino effect. People, there was no 'calming' the horses in this situation. They were scared, in a big echoing arena, and something was chasing them. They wanted to be with their buddies in the center of the arena, but in doing so, they would only slam their carts into the other horses. That being said, could this have been handled better? Yes. Of course, it could have. But there is a saying, 'hindsight is 20/20'. They were acting in the moment, and as I have already pointed out, this was not something that any of them had ever seen before or could have predicted would happen. How do you prepare for something that you never expect to happen? On a final note, I have nothing to say for the shrieking audience. They really should have shut up. I hope this clears a few things up.

The day horses are soured because one of their own decides to run amock near them is the day they forget they are horses and instead believe they are people and ne3d a Xanax to get out of bed. Thanks for common sense comment. Sadly those that have never worked with harness classes have not got a clue as to how they are hooked to the cart or buggy. Sad to read comments too that haven't got a clue.
i'm not even half way through and there's so many things wrong already, the person speaking clearly knew what to do but what did the workers do,do the exact opposite of what they said, also after you've got them don't jump on the horse or try to catch it with a rope like no, i swear to god people own horses and work with them but don't actually know what to do in situations like this.
This is not the only event where a spooked horse was not properly taken care, when watching the video all I could think of was "is it just me or do these people only drive horses because they're filthy rich?"
Idkkk I’m not familiar with “rich people” driving horses- it’s usually just really weird people. The people we foxhunt with are loaded and have excellent horsemanship.
Once I saw a horse just start running & bucking at a horse show once; turns out it was reacting to a wasp stinging it.🤔➡️Just saw another commenter explain that that first horse was indeed stung by a wasp. Should always inspect rings & barns for wasps nests they are everywhere. This whole travesty could have been avoided if ring had been inspected & wasp nest gotten rid of before hand.
I liked how the announcer tried to stay calm and keep everyone else calm. She was doing the right thing... They should have let the horses just run it out - they'd eventually tire..instead of jumping out at them every 10 seconds. Probably scared em shitless.

A scared horse is a dangerous horse. These horses who are running out of control believe in their hearts they are running for their lives. When a horse is this scared they will run thru fences even over humans. They will do what ever it takes to get away from what they see a horrible danger. I couldn't believe these men trying to catch these horses. Again, when horses are in fear of their lives no one can catch them unless they allow themselves to be caught. What I see in this video is several running horses scared for their lives and several men trying to catch the scared horses. These horses are running over people and object which are directly in front of them because they can't see anything directly in front of them. This is just due to their normal anatomy. Then put blinders on the poor horse and they can't see to their sides. Normally a horse will tilt his head a little to the side to see anything in front of him. What I see in the video is one of the most dangerous situation a human can be in when it come to horses. How best to handle this situation was almost exactly what was done: have all the horses who are still under control come into the middle of the arena. Have the drivers get out of the carts and then unhook the horses from the carts. Then make a human chain around the horses and drivers but have the human chain talk loud enough for the out of control horses to hear them. This should help the horses know where the humans are. Normally horses do not want to run over humans or other horses. Now try to get the audience to be as silent as possible. Finally you just have to let these frightened horses run until they realize there is no danger. Unfortunately the horse may still injure themselves or have a stroke of a heart attack. All said I think all involved in this video did their best to keep everyone involved safe, including the poor horses.
Absolutely, I saw way too many handlers spread out all over trying to catch each horse instead of protecting those in the center. They would have run themselves out on the rail if they were kept out there.
Just curious - when my horse gets away from me, I squat down and he comes to me. I'm not really all that experienced and I didn't teach him to do this. He just does it. Does that work for others?

I don't know how people manage to get their bodies to do that. If I see horses running at me and I am not sure if they will stop, my body reacts on its own (and moves out of the way) ... The only horse against whom I would stand my ground is my own - as long as I am sure she is still playing (she does run towards me sometimes to provoke a reaction).

Your right they just get abuse and there's nothing to we can do about it but hear and or look at it happening. Like it must not be illegal cause can you see people abusing hoses all the time and they don't get in trouble, but if it's a dog they will go to jail. I worked for a 'gaited' horse trainer for @ a year. This 'scene' is common, happening in at least one class per show. Never have I feared for my life more than standing in the warm up arenas at gaited shows. The people are downright dangerous and belong nowhere near any horse! I've worked in the horse business for more than 25 years, and have been to every type of show, event, etc. but I'd NEVER work around/with gaited' idiots again! *I realized that my poor experiences have caused me to generalize all gaited trainers as 'idiots'. This was completely unfair of me and I sincerely apologize to those of you who 'get it right'.
These are Morgan horse and they have a more chance of being scared then any other type of horses, but my point to tell you is they're unprepared for what is coming I mean this unexpected and the horses reaction of the everyone waving their hands frightened the horse
Wow... ok.. first off.. if your horse bucks once.. something is wrong.. in other words STOP. Get hands on your horse, remove the carriage and walk off. Secondly, the more people that chase a horse the faster it will run. You want to keep the horses away from the outer edge but you don't want to crowd them together. Horses naturally run to other horses, keeping a group of horses too close especially with carriages attached, can result in chaos. Roping the horse was a bad idea... he could have killed the horse. Normally horses will stop after they've run themselves down... white coats also do not help! Do not ever carry your coat in your arm if you are going to chase after a horse, it is weird and it is a predator. White coats should be removed and put away.. white equals SCARY! What made the horse run were the ropes and initially the carriage being drug behind it.. horses are afraid of things they cannot see and I don't know if anyone has noticed or not, but a horse can't exactly turn his head and look behind him. AKA there is a scary thing chasing me and I can't see it... spooky thing, plus me equals RUN.
+Uryusgirlfriend I agree with pretty much all of this, except, with carriage driving it's really hard to stop a horse after it's 'bucked once.' No emergency dismount and you're almost more in danger (and the horse) out of the cart with a horse that's stopped but ready to explode than you are in the cart. I wish we could have seen what had started the initial buckfreakout, but I doubt the rider could have really stopped the horse. I ride and drive and I find driving much harder in bad situations and really cumbersome. The horse I am most anxious about working with is a MINIATURE horse with a bolting problem under carriage. It's really scary and because of the length of the reins and the cart, you can't really choke up on the reins or pully them around if they are completely white eyed freaking out. THAT SAID, I would NEVER bring this one mini into a competition setting - and I'm going out on a limb and guessing this is not the first time the initial bolting horse has acted out. There is no excuse to bring a bolting carriage horse into a show, unlike a spooky jumper or whatever where the worst thing that happens is you go ass over teakettle because you didn't work with your horse enough.

+Erdbeer Panda I don't mean to say what you stated was wrong, but I just wanted to point out a thing or two. The reins are tight because that can actually be a better way to control a horse when they act out. Just like with kids, they may need a hard hand. Also, USEF and AHA have many regulations set up to where none of the horses are being truly hurt in the show ring. What the competitors do out of it, I have no idea. But if there is cruelty shown, they are asked to leave, fined, or arrested depending on the severity. I'm not sure how familiar you are with Arabian horses; their necks are built to easily do that, their tail is high because they are naturally missing a few vertebrae (which happened thousands of years ago), and the reins have to be extremely tight to block breathing. The reins control the bit in the horses mouth, not necessarily the entire nose. Arabians also have a large amount of naval cavity to enable powerful breathing capability. The walking isn't unnatural. If the horse doesn't like it and it isn't abused, it won't do it. The head is high because it is an Arabian; it can have its head literally anywhere possible. There wasn't any cruelty shown in the beginning of the video. The horse acted out because it didn't like what it was doing, something spooked it, or any number of reasons having to do with the horse, not necessarily the rider (though he could have had something to do with it, I don't know). I don't want to be rude or anything, just thought I'd explain everything :)
The horse that spooked in the first place was stung by a wasp or another animal which made him freak out. Also in the middle of the arena you can see a woman sitting on her cart and not getting out. I've seen people commenting how this woman was being stupid. They don't know what really happened though. That woman was disabled and people were trying to protect her since she couldn't do anything. I know everything could have been handled better but people should dig deeper for information before actually commenting 😊
Pretty idiotic. But the announcer was like " do this its ok do that" really calmly. Now THAT is a true PRO who knows what they're doing!!! Next time something goes wrong keep calm!
I don't understand that once they realized that taking the rest of the horses to the middle was not safe they didn't remove the horses from the arena one by one. At the very least remove the carts and harnesses so if another of the horses does spook it won't be as dangerous for the horse because they don't have a cart and harness to trip on.
+Daniella Kiewicz The horses were running too fast to catch them. They did remove them from the arena. That part just wasn't shown as the video focused on the two that were running wild.
I think the judge did an admirable job handling the situation. When the audience got lout, she told them to be quiet. When it looked like the middle wasn't safe, she said to get the horses out.

remarkable comments. a 1000 lb horse who has decided to panic and then sets off a chain reaction of panic as it bumps into and upends other carts is a force to be reconned with. Trying to keep it on the rail seemed to be a reasonable approach until the horse came into the center on it's own (as horses do at the end of every class) and perpetuated more mayhem inadvertently. The folks who took off their horse's harnesses were the fastest thinkers, thus reducing the potential for more cataclysm. One poor woman had no "header"was a sitting duck as the runaway took out her cart and launched her horse into an additional panic. Too bad she couldn't have asked for help unhitching, that seemed like the best way to minimize the catastrophe. but things happen fast, and horses in a panic don't think reasonably ( much like some folks who comment on youtube vids). The folks who held down the horse at the end assured that the horse would not get up to resume it's panicked run and perpetuate injury to itself and others. They all did the best they could. This could have turned out far worse, as it was it was heartbreaking to see horses and people get injured because one horse entered a class bucking and control was never resumed.
I agree with you. Horse people on YT always assume they would do better than in the video, but they are thinking with a mind that is unclouded by the adrenaline of the moment. It's arrogant, really. I think they did the best they could with the panic at the time.
It takes a long time to develop the ability to not panic in a situation like that. Many years of dangerous situations. And while you might be able to stay calm, other people might not.
One thing that I noticed about the people who held the second horse down. They were not only trying to control the panicked horse, but we're also removing the tack. And perhaps some horse people who comment on TH-cam are experienced enough that they WOULD act in any given situation the way they comment. You don't know another person's life experience. Regardless, I believe a person should not have horses if they don't have an understanding of them, or take the time to build a relationship with the animal.
what I would do is: 1. stay calm 2. don't start running 3. don't scream 4. just let the horses run until they calm down 5. DONT TROW A ROPE IN FRONT OF THE HORSE, THE HORSE COULD BREAKS HIS/HER NECK OR HIS/HER LEGS!!!! And if you didn't know your horse and know how he/she reacts JUST DONT PARTICIPATE!!!! Don't think of your horse as just an animal, think of your horse as you partner. I really don't know how these people can even have their own horse.

I am a horse person and can’t even imagine being in a situation like this. I would bring the other horses to the middle and remove the carts once the person was off. I would then consider walking the other horses out in hand.
Sarah Côté You cannot safely unhitch these harnesses in a quick manner. They aren't hooked to a single tree you can just drop from. Tugs come from the breast collar and are wrapped around the shafts and then secured to the buggy/cart and they have to be coiled up, and the shafts are buckled down with a figure 8 wrap around them that comes off of the surcingle and those have to be coiled up. The lines are also very long so you have to coil them up as well. And you can't just walk horse out of the shafts either.

@@ginalarson6370 idk what stable or coach these people have but the first time I went to a stable it was drilled into me that you do not run, scream or jump infront of a horse. All the people that were chasing it and the audience members that were shreaking should be barred from the event. Theres another video of a heavy horse hitch losing control, they had a ring full of the hitches and the situation was under control within a minute because everyone remained calm.

As a prey animal, the horse has a very intense flight instinct; and keen aversion to being eaten!!! With the crowd screaming and people running around after it, the horse naturally saw a goblin around every piece/person in the ring/arena. The announcer's instructions for everyone to go to the inside was very prudent because a spooked, fast moving horse will naturally tend to run wide.

It looked like the horse was scared of his driver, primarily by the bucking. Not to mention the man was horrifically pulling on the bit. He displays a lot of of signs that he is either; extremely untrained and wasn't prepared properly for the show, or he was abused behind the scenes. It might be both cases.
@@staceyevans2315 Apparently the horse was 16 and had been doing these competitions for years already and was known for his good manners. So probably a switch to a new, awful trainer. Or maybe he was in pain. Horses show subtle signs that they're in pain, but when those signs get ignored, they become bigger (bucking, rearing, etc)
What would I do? I would do everything except for what these people did!

I don't know how people can jump in the path of a scared horse. I had a similar experience once. One of our horses broke lose and ran through the stable area. It came straight towards me - I waited calmly in its way, but only as long as I was sure it could stop. As I saw that it would not slow down I moved out of its way - safety first. Even if I would have wanted to wait it out I could not have done it. It is so scary to see a cantering horse running towards oneself ...

I grew up riding a dealing with horses my whole life. Training your horse well was instilled in me and the importance of it. And how I needed to know what to do in any situation. Calm and a steady tone is vital. And if you’re somewhere where a horse goes into panic mode, keep your eye on the horse and have a plan. Don’t just sit in one open targeted spot, get out of the line of fire. And allow the minimum amount of people handle the horse. Less is better. I was also taught that when I’m training my horse to develop a control trigger that will make your horse stop in any situation. It’s a combination of whatever signal you develop between you and your horse and your ability to immediately convince them that they’re safe and ok. Because that’s their mindset regarding you, they’re protecting and taking care of you, they need to the same from their rider. Happy Trails folks.

Horse shows are generally recorded, so if not this guy it would have been someone else. It's actually smart to keep recording if you're not in danger and can't help because there may be insurance questions.

My trainer was there. She said that many of the people in the audience were unfamiliar with horses, and the yelling made things much worse than it should have been. She also said she wished more people did what our division does when one of the show horses gets upset and starts panicking- everyone on the sidelines quietly but firmly says, “Whoa!” Much more effective.

Especially as the silly creatures seem to have a habit of careening into each other, most likely caused by the limits that blinders place on their vision. So, let's look at this from a 'money' perspective. Attempting to stop a panicking horse, especially one with blinders has a high probability of resulting in human injury, especially if the horse runs over someone, which one did. So that's doctor and/or funeral bills. Not removing all other horses from the ring means that the Panicking horse will do exactly as shown in the video and cause more horses to panic by running into them. So now, not only is there the issue of one expensive horse fatally injuring itself, but several. Panicking horses with blinders constantly careen into into other objects, so in not removing all other horses from the ring, they leave objects for the panicking horse to crash into, leading to more injury not only to the original Panicking horse, but to the other horses and people. So, if they had removed all other horses from the ring immediately, only one horse would have been panicing, and there would have been less for it to crash into and injure itself on. If they had allowed it to run itself out instead of attempting to grab it the horse would have eventually calmed down and stopped. Due to the blinders the horse could not see what was grabbing at it only that something was and that is why it kept running, because the people attempting to catch it kept on sending it into higher levels of panic. The reason the horse paniced so much was because it couldn't see. It was running from the unknown. Had it not had blinders, firstly, it would not have kept on running into everything and injuring itself, and secondly, after it realised there was nothing after it, it would have calmed down albeit slowly. Also, in case you didn't notice, the horse that went down at the end was not the original runner, but the 3rd or 4th. Had all horses been removed from the ring at the start, the last would not have started to panic.
Basically, everything I suggested *lowers* the probability of injury and therefore expenses, not only to the original Panicing horse, but to everything else in that ring. So which of us, exactly, lacks logic and understanding?

@@brendaclark3085 I am aware that the announcer eventually made the suggestion, but much would have been prevented had the call been made earlier. They would not have been able to evacuate the horses quickly, or all at once, however there is a window of time between the Panicking horse running past the gate and coming back around to the gate in which one could remove one, maybe two horses from the ring at a time. It would require some timing and care, but would be the best option. Leaving the horses within the ring presents more danger than getting them out safely.

Not sure why this was recommended to me now, 10 years later, but as someone who rode and worked with Arabians, trying to grab that horse and yanking on it was the worst possible idea. It would have riled the horse further. The announcer was doing the best she could- get all of the calm horses in one spot and clear(a corner would have been preferable, but most were in the center already). Then my recommendation would have been: trainers form a barrier between the spooked horse and the others with arms out in a T pose like a fence, then let the spooked horse calm itself in the remainder of the arena. It may have taken a couple minutes, but it would have been fine. The horse was trying to bob and weave away from everyone trying to grab it, and in its' panicked and blindered state, that wasn't something it could do effectively, causing the crashing.
And for the love of all things good in the world, people, please don't scream at an equestrian event when something goes wrong? Call for help, maybe, but screaming just scares the horses more! BUT REALLY, JUST LISTEN TO THE ANNOUNCER.

I saw a pretty bad mess with pulling ponies once. They spooked, jerked the hitch out of the helpers hands, took off bucking and one pony jumped over both sets of traces and went down. Took 20 minutes to untangle.

I have to give kudos to the announcer who seemed to be the only one who had any sort of sense in this situation. I expect professional trainers/riders/handlers to have been smarter than this. Chasing a 1000lb spooked horse with blinders on in an attempt to catch it... really? She was right to tell them to let the horse just run it out and to keep the horse on the outside of the ring. Everything she did here was correct. Too bad these people lost all their marbles in a dangerous crisis.

Technically the proper term is driving harness. Anything you put on a horse is called tack. Tack is the general term. Just like anything you put on your body is called "clothes".
To get any of these horses back into a bike is going to take a very long time and tons of patience. That's if the horses show any willingness at all to having a bike behind them again. These horses just might have to be turned into riding horses be use of this trauma.

That was Bob Hart - he tried to lasso the horse but missed. The horse went down when it tripped on the harness leathers hanging on the ground. Just happended to be at the same time....
I think it was fine - it was tangled in the harness which is why it fell down. I didn't hear of any horses having more than a few scratches.
The first horse is Hizberry Best who I believe was 16 years old at the time and had competed for years and is well known for his good manners. They aren't sure what happened here, but this is a classic example of how even the most bombproof horse can spook. After this accident he was taken out of driving totally.

Thank you so much for telling how it went. I worked with horses for 13 or 14 years, and I still get anxious when seeing things like this (but unlike these people, I know keeping your cool is the most important rule despite your fears).
That's good news! Saw this video for first time today and don't know where to start with my feelings. But first....what was with that guy w/the hat yanking on the reins?? Extremely obvious he's hurting the horse's mouth and the horse is rebelling. Also extremely obvious the guy is clueless about horses and doesn't know what he's doing. I hope the organizers/organization has learned to pull these accidents-going-to-happen-in-a-few-minutes out of the ring before disaster strikes.
When the one horse runs through the other side of the ring center, some guy grabs the left rein which yanks the horse's head hard left but the horse is still running and right into another cart/rider/horse. If that horse had been left alone it probably would not have crashed, but since it was running blind it was bound to crash.
Very few people in the ring have much horse experience, very obvious by their actions. You should not be in the ring if you don't have to be. What's with people sitting in lawn chairs in the center? I grew up out West with horses and had the help of my grandfather and dad learning about horses. So when I see urbanites mixed in with horses there's a 50-50 chance of a problem because they are clueless. If you're going to be around horses, spend the extra money to learn about horses from someone who knows what they are doing. You'll have a much more positive experience in the long run.

Just this year a similar thing happened at Devon Show. in PA....the horse leaped the out gate still in harness having broken away from the cart. Thank God no one was hurt neither was the horse......but this stuff happens to the best and it's heart breaking.

The judge was literally the only person who knew what the hell to do. If they didn’t have her that would be even more of a disaster then it already was. People SCREAMING all over the place is NOT going to resolve anything. Just let them run and they will run out of energy. Waving your hands at them and getting ran over by them is only going to spook them more. They should have brought all the other horses out while the first one spooked so he could just run out of energy and it wouldn’t be so traumatic.

Not one driver had the presence of mind to drop the quick connect, leave the cart in the center and exit the arena with their horse, when this first started. All those coats flapping and towels but no one can figure out how to use a blindfold. The horses still under control could have been blinded and led to the gate as the run away went past. Not one single person has a sharp knife to cut away the harness? A harness can be repaired a broken leg can not.
Chasing, flapping arms, all that was counter productive and served only to cause the original horse to come off the rail and hit more horses and vehicles. Just going to the center of the ring to allow the runaway to just run out of gas, and removing one horse at a time. This requires cool heads and a clear understanding of what a panicked horse will do.
FINALLY someone agrees that this IS NOT the horse's fault the reason why it carried out so long is because THE STUPID HUMANS scared the poor horse :(

At 1:13 that groom in the white hat should know it was safer out of the ring than in it and get the horse out the nearest gate. (this is called situational awareness) The runaway passes him again at 1:45 and he isn't 50 feet from a gate! How many wrecks have to happen before he catches his snap?
A horse with blinders in a panic running like the hounds of hell are after him is not looking for a heard to join. Flight instinct has kicked in and until the adrenalin burns up a bit he's going to run. The clearly unsavvy people on the rail shooing the horse off the rail are to blame for about 60% of this nightmare. And the announcer waited WAY too long to order them out.
There are no quick connects on these harnesses, the tugs are wrapped around the shafts, and straps off the surcingle are wrapped in figure 8 to secure them, and may also be run through leather keepers attached to the shaft as well.
It is not a simple matter to get a cart or buggy loose hitched like we hitch.

I saw quick hitches in the harness racing catalogs 20 years ago and used them on a pony cart for just park driving, just a safety feature.
These folks have these highly bred excitable horses and no quick hitch? That takes real forethought there.
I also carry a razor sharp pocket knife with me every time I mess with a horse at all. I have had to cut a few straps and ropes but it has worked out way better than not cutting them.

Ahh found the first comment here with a smidgen of sense!! I’ve said for years that the risk assessment should advise that if one horse is in a panic then all others should be removed from their buggies and all taken out of the ring. An arena like this one is ideal as all “calm” horses can leave by one gate and the panicked horse guided to the opposite holding ring, much smaller and easier to catch there.

Virginia Fry someone who was there commented and said they (the people running at the horse) were mostly trying to keep him on the outside of the arena, but I saw a few people take a grab at the reigns of the first horse for sure. Apparently the first horse was stung by a handful of bees when he was entering the arena, and that’s when he started kicking and eventually running. This situation is just scary and sad. The whole time I was watching it I just kept thinking, “there’s no way a horse acting normally wouldn’t have stopped by now...”

@@makaylam947 No, it's not to scare the animal, it's to get it to stop and think. We had a barrel horse that slipped and fell running to first barrel (him and the rider are fine.) He got up and ran the entire arena, scared at what had happened. Yes, you can let them run it out, but that can get dangerous. All it took for him to stop was someone literally threw a jacket in front of his face. It made him stop and they were able to grab him and calm him down. They do that for the horse to stop and calm down. The only problem with these driving horses where that they had the carts on them so they thought something was chasing them so it was harder for them to get out of their fight or flight response and realize their humans where there to keep them safe.

When they are bolting like that, they revert to natural instinct which is to trample anything that gets in their way until they are back to something thats comforting and familiar. Which you'll find isn't a human. It'd be their paddock or stable back home. There is no amount of bond or horsemanship that could have helped this. They were too panicked
TheNonMakeupGuru Nope, it can be a human. Personally I stopped 2 bolting horses, both times a mere approach was enough after they ran two rounds and the initial shock faded. Saw other people getting a hold of bolting horses too, and once a new horse ran towards the next horse in sight - in that case it was my horse, another time it just ran towards the paddocks. You'd be surprised what a bond some people can have with their horses.

I do understand very well the type of bond you can have with a horse. But i can tell you that in this situation they will stay in that panicked state with so much noise going on around them and so much crap hitting their legs. As someone who has knowledge about what happened during this class, I must say that the comments on this video are dripping with ignorance. First of all, 'we need a medic please' was for the paraplegic woman. It was her horse that was spooked last. She fell from her cart. Enough said. The man that was seen 'run over' was perfectly fine. At most, he had minor injuries. He was the most injured out of anyone.
Yes, this is a trama that these horses will never recover from. None of these horses were ever driven again, I'm sure. That being said, NONE of them were put down either. It is absolutely ridiculous that any of you would actually believe that! That horse that fell down at the end got tangled up in all his equipment, that is why he tripped, and why they held him down. Just after this video ended, they succeeded in getting all the tack off him, and he was allowed to stand up, and they calmly walked him out of the arena. He wasn't even limping.
None were badly injured due to this. Nobody was. That is a fact. It is also a fact that I had never seen anything like this before in my 15+ years with the Arabian horse. I haven't seen anything like this since then either. I am a third gen. equestrian to boot, and even my grandma hadn't seen anything quite like this before when I showed her the video. Someone mentioned that this happens with the gaited horses all the time. I can't speak for them, but Arabians are NOT gaited. Don't confuse Arabs with those that use the horrific practices found in gaited horse showing.
The first horse panicked due to a beehive found near the entrance. The horse was stung multiple times on the belly, thus causing the initial spook. The people in the arena were stunned at what was happening and were trying to keep the horse on the rail, away from the rest of the horses. Horses are herd animals. The spooked horse wanted to join those in the center, thus why the handlers were yelling and waving their arms. Unfortunately, the horse was so panicked that it was still trying to get to the other horses, thus causing that domino effect.
People, there was no 'calming' the horses in this situation. They were scared, in a big echoing arena, and something was chasing them. They wanted to be with their buddies in the center of the arena, but in doing so, they would only slam their carts into the other horses.
That being said, could this have been handled better? Yes. Of course, it could have. But there is a saying, 'hindsight is 20/20'. They were acting in the moment, and as I have already pointed out, this was not something that any of them had ever seen before or could have predicted would happen. How do you prepare for something that you never expect to happen?
On a final note, I have nothing to say for the shrieking audience. They really should have shut up.

Once I saw a horse just start running & bucking at a horse show once; turns out it was reacting to a wasp stinging it.🤔➡️Just saw another commenter explain that that first horse was indeed stung by a wasp. Should always inspect rings & barns for wasps nests they are everywhere. This whole travesty could have been avoided if ring had been inspected & wasp nest gotten rid of before hand.
I liked how the announcer tried to stay calm and keep everyone else calm. She was doing the right thing... They should have let the horses just run it out - they'd eventually tire..instead of jumping out at them every 10 seconds. Probably scared em shitless.

Trouble is that until they do tire from running, the chance of injury would be great.
Horse will panic and eventually may try jumping end gate too, and good way to get everyone in there killed.

A scared horse is a dangerous horse. These horses who are running out of control believe in their hearts they are running for their lives. When a horse is this scared they will run thru fences even over humans. They will do what ever it takes to get away from what they see a horrible danger. I couldn't believe these men trying to catch these horses. Again, when horses are in fear of their lives no one can catch them unless they allow themselves to be caught. What I see in this video is several running horses scared for their lives and several men trying to catch the scared horses. These horses are running over people and object which are directly in front of them because they can't see anything directly in front of them. This is just due to their normal anatomy. Then put blinders on the poor horse and they can't see to their sides. Normally a horse will tilt his head a little to the side to see anything in front of him. What I see in the video is one of the most dangerous situation a human can be in when it come to horses. How best to handle this situation was almost exactly what was done: have all the horses who are still under control come into the middle of the arena. Have the drivers get out of the carts and then unhook the horses from the carts. Then make a human chain around the horses and drivers but have the human chain talk loud enough for the out of control horses to hear them. This should help the horses know where the humans are. Normally horses do not want to run over humans or other horses. Now try to get the audience to be as silent as possible. Finally you just have to let these frightened horses run until they realize there is no danger. Unfortunately the horse may still injure themselves or have a stroke of a heart attack. All said I think all involved in this video did their best to keep everyone involved safe, including the poor horses.

I don't know how people manage to get their bodies to do that. If I see horses running at me and I am not sure if they will stop, my body reacts on its own (and moves out of the way) ... The only horse against whom I would stand my ground is my own - as long as I am sure she is still playing (she does run towards me sometimes to provoke a reaction).

I worked for a 'gaited' horse trainer for @ a year. This 'scene' is common, happening in at least one class per show. Never have I feared for my life more than standing in the warm up arenas at gaited shows. The people are downright dangerous and belong nowhere near any horse!
I've worked in the horse business for more than 25 years, and have been to every type of show, event, etc. but I'd NEVER work around/with gaited' idiots again!
*I realized that my poor experiences have caused me to generalize all gaited trainers as 'idiots'. This was completely unfair of me and I sincerely apologize to those of you who 'get it right'.

Wow... ok.. first off.. if your horse bucks once.. something is wrong.. in other words STOP. Get hands on your horse, remove the carriage and walk off. Secondly, the more people that chase a horse the faster it will run. You want to keep the horses away from the outer edge but you don't want to crowd them together. Horses naturally run to other horses, keeping a group of horses too close especially with carriages attached, can result in chaos. Roping the horse was a bad idea... he could have killed the horse. Normally horses will stop after they've run themselves down... white coats also do not help! Do not ever carry your coat in your arm if you are going to chase after a horse, it is weird and it is a predator. White coats should be removed and put away.. white equals SCARY! What made the horse run were the ropes and initially the carriage being drug behind it.. horses are afraid of things they cannot see and I don't know if anyone has noticed or not, but a horse can't exactly turn his head and look behind him. AKA there is a scary thing chasing me and I can't see it... spooky thing, plus me equals RUN.
+Uryusgirlfriend I agree with pretty much all of this, except, with carriage driving it's really hard to stop a horse after it's 'bucked once.' No emergency dismount and you're almost more in danger (and the horse) out of the cart with a horse that's stopped but ready to explode than you are in the cart. I wish we could have seen what had started the initial buckfreakout, but I doubt the rider could have really stopped the horse. I ride and drive and I find driving much harder in bad situations and really cumbersome. The horse I am most anxious about working with is a MINIATURE horse with a bolting problem under carriage. It's really scary and because of the length of the reins and the cart, you can't really choke up on the reins or pully them around if they are completely white eyed freaking out. THAT SAID, I would NEVER bring this one mini into a competition setting - and I'm going out on a limb and guessing this is not the first time the initial bolting horse has acted out. There is no excuse to bring a bolting carriage horse into a show, unlike a spooky jumper or whatever where the worst thing that happens is you go ass over teakettle because you didn't work with your horse enough.

+Erdbeer Panda I don't mean to say what you stated was wrong, but I just wanted to point out a thing or two. The reins are tight because that can actually be a better way to control a horse when they act out. Just like with kids, they may need a hard hand. Also, USEF and AHA have many regulations set up to where none of the horses are being truly hurt in the show ring. What the competitors do out of it, I have no idea. But if there is cruelty shown, they are asked to leave, fined, or arrested depending on the severity. I'm not sure how familiar you are with Arabian horses; their necks are built to easily do that, their tail is high because they are naturally missing a few vertebrae (which happened thousands of years ago), and the reins have to be extremely tight to block breathing. The reins control the bit in the horses mouth, not necessarily the entire nose. Arabians also have a large amount of naval cavity to enable powerful breathing capability. The walking isn't unnatural. If the horse doesn't like it and it isn't abused, it won't do it. The head is high because it is an Arabian; it can have its head literally anywhere possible. There wasn't any cruelty shown in the beginning of the video. The horse acted out because it didn't like what it was doing, something spooked it, or any number of reasons having to do with the horse, not necessarily the rider (though he could have had something to do with it, I don't know).

The horse that spooked in the first place was stung by a wasp or another animal which made him freak out. Also in the middle of the arena you can see a woman sitting on her cart and not getting out. I've seen people commenting how this woman was being stupid. They don't know what really happened though. That woman was disabled and people were trying to protect her since she couldn't do anything. I know everything could have been handled better but people should dig deeper for information before actually commenting 😊

I don't understand that once they realized that taking the rest of the horses to the middle was not safe they didn't remove the horses from the arena one by one. At the very least remove the carts and harnesses so if another of the horses does spook it won't be as dangerous for the horse because they don't have a cart and harness to trip on.

I think the judge did an admirable job handling the situation. When the audience got lout, she told them to be quiet. When it looked like the middle wasn't safe, she said to get the horses out.
Harness & carts can take time to remove properly, especially with the panic going on
Add to that, if running horses see the open gate, they would make a mad dash for it.....

remarkable comments. a 1000 lb horse who has decided to panic and then sets off a chain reaction of panic as it bumps into and upends other carts is a force to be reconned with. Trying to keep it on the rail seemed to be a reasonable approach until the horse came into the center on it's own (as horses do at the end of every class) and perpetuated more mayhem inadvertently. The folks who took off their horse's harnesses were the fastest thinkers, thus reducing the potential for more cataclysm. One poor woman had no "header"was a sitting duck as the runaway took out her cart and launched her horse into an additional panic. Too bad she couldn't have asked for help unhitching, that seemed like the best way to minimize the catastrophe. but things happen fast, and horses in a panic don't think reasonably ( much like some folks who comment on youtube vids). The folks who held down the horse at the end assured that the horse would not get up to resume it's panicked run and perpetuate injury to itself and others. They all did the best they could. This could have turned out far worse, as it was it was heartbreaking to see horses and people get injured because one horse entered a class bucking and control was never resumed.

I agree with you. Horse people on YT always assume they would do better than in the video, but they are thinking with a mind that is unclouded by the adrenaline of the moment. It's arrogant, really. I think they did the best they could with the panic at the time.
It takes a long time to develop the ability to not panic in a situation like that. Many years of dangerous situations. And while you might be able to stay calm, other people might not.
One thing that I noticed about the people who held the second horse down. They were not only trying to control the panicked horse, but we're also removing the tack.
And perhaps some horse people who comment on TH-cam are experienced enough that they WOULD act in any given situation the way they comment. You don't know another person's life experience.
Regardless, I believe a person should not have horses if they don't have an understanding of them, or take the time to build a relationship with the animal.
what I would do is:
1. stay calm
2. don't start running
3. don't scream
4. just let the horses run until they calm down
5. DONT TROW A ROPE IN FRONT OF THE HORSE, THE HORSE COULD BREAKS HIS/HER NECK OR HIS/HER LEGS!!!!
And if you didn't know your horse and know how he/she reacts JUST DONT PARTICIPATE!!!!

Sarah Côté You cannot safely unhitch these harnesses in a quick manner. They aren't hooked to a single tree you can just drop from. Tugs come from the breast collar and are wrapped around the shafts and then secured to the buggy/cart and they have to be coiled up, and the shafts are buckled down with a figure 8 wrap around them that comes off of the surcingle and those have to be coiled up. The lines are also very long so you have to coil them up as well. And you can't just walk horse out of the shafts either.
GOOD IDEA. ALL THE HORSES GOT SPOOKED OVER THAT ONE HORSE WITH A PROBLEM.
