As a viewer of Mr. Karan, I was waiting for the interview to begin soon after Mr. Karan's Pre-interview clip which we see in all his interviews (where he talks about subscribing etc and his journey of interviewing people from various fields). And soon after getting on the highway for a 54 Kms drive one way, I began the video on my car screen. To my surprise there were young children playing so beautifully for a good length of the total video (I am music teacher). Had heard Mr. Zubin's name but never paid much attention to his works. I will do so now. I appreciate Karan trying to keep the elderly Mr. Zubin occupied in the interview with questions. The introduction by Karan was also nice. It was nice to hear the stories that Mr. Zubin had to tell.
I loved to hear how he had class mates from so many religions and never felt anything different. This touched me.
I grew in a Catholic dominated village, practicing a bit different form of Christianity. I studied in a catholic school with 10-15 out of the total 200-300 (don't remember the exact number from 1993-2001) students were Hindus and Muslims and the rest were Catholics and myself a Christian. One Friday of the month we used to attend a service at the church next to our school and I think it was followed in all schools in my state that were part of the village church. Our principal was the Priest of the church and headmaster could be anyone-Hindu or Christian. Our Hindu and Muslim students attended the service with love and respect (or let's say they attended as innocents). My Catholic teachers were a bit mad at me because I followed Christianity in a bit different way. They did insult me also. But nothing was said to my Hindu and Muslim school mates. I took part in the church readings also and singing.
None of them were forced to follow Christianity.
The bond in the village was so great that though there were few Hindu families in the village, they made such beautiful difference when it came to Ganesh Chaturthi and Diwali or Rakshabandan etc. We were united. We never felt different. My first friend was a Hindu.
Growing up in my late teens and early 20s I made best friends with many Hindu classmates and college boys and Muslims too. The bond was friendship. They bowed down to every Cross and Chapel and church. And I used to wait for the 'prashad' outside the temple when the Hindu friends went for a quick visit to a small temple. Their festivals were complete only when Christians and Muslim friends came and ate. And so was for our Muslim friends on Eid. I admit that I did not go and bow down to any Hindu gods but these boys did. Hinduism is so tolerant and respects all other religions. They do not mind bowing to any other deity or religious figure. I respected my Hindu friends by avoiding beef when we were having snacks or eating in restaurants. Ohhh….those days… 19 years back…I made more Hindu and Muslim friends than Christians.
But I really feel and see so much difference since 2014. We feel hurt and offended by so many things now.
The concern of Mr. Zubin for his Muslim friend is a concern for many in India.
But good Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhist and others will always do everything to keep the beauty of 'Unity in Diversity' in our beautiful country.

I wish there was more interaction on music and his career. If it is not Mr Thapar’s forte, there should be someone who can take on the task. Increasingly, we seem to be running out of time. Zubin Mehta is a remarkable musician but he looks old and frail. His music making in Israel and Vienna has been remarkable as was his early maturity in Los Angeles. His Mahler has been rightly praised to the skies along with his wonderful recordings of Italian opera. While, his recordings of core German repertoire has not been distinctive, he is one of best accompanists ever. He said he has never done Parsifal…he has not done many cycles of symphonies either. No Mahler cycle on record, no Bruckner. A much underrated Tchaikovsky cycle in Los Angeles on Decca. Some wonderful Dvorak recordings which have left us lamenting the lack of at least a mini cycle of the mature Dvorak symphonies. His Brahms recordings in New York and Israel have not stood the test of time though they continue to communicate with great warmth if not with sufficient bite. He is a great conductor of much of the Romantic repertoire. I pray that he has a long Indian summer ahead.

In 1967, Zubin took the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Andre Watts to Tehran, Iran for two concerts. I was able to finagle a ticket to the second concert. The ticket was given to me at the gate by a Russian mother and daughter who had an extra one due to the father's illness that night. The young girl and I exchanged many many smiles during the concert at the end of which I couldn't decide whether I had fallen in love with the girl or the music. I never saw the girl again but nourished the love for classical music and have loved and enjoyed it ever since. That was 56 years ago. Thank you maestro.

Quite shameful to use this interview to try to draw Mr Zubin Mehta to express an opinion on the political state of India. And not enough on his music... his concerts... And Karan loves to hear the sound of his own voice and doesn't give the person being interviewed a chance to express his opinions. Finally, he got caught out with many inaccuracies as he was relying on the biography of Mr Mehta without verifying the facts. Last interview of Mr Karan Thapar that I am going to watch. And for the record, I'm not a fan of any political party in India.

Dear people in the comments troubled by the alleged political tenor of the interview, understand that zubin Mehta in his answers is bringing to you an image of India, of Bombay, of people which the present government is actively whitewashing. Its a slice of history the curent dispensation is proactively obliterating and so Thapar's questions, even with their political tenor, are germane to this discussion. If you like this conversation, I suggest deep down you also aspire for arts beyond boundaries of all kinds (doesn't matter how many Indians are there in Mehta's orchestra).Embrace that side of yourself for your benefit and for ours and for this great country
