Unfortantly for the lovely Psy he was considered a 'one hit wonder' and funny meem he never saw any growth of his career in the West. Most people didn't even know he was Korean. I feel really sorry for him as he's such a sweet guy.
even bts have had many mixed feelings about the "kpop/idols" title. In their early years they pretty much resented that title. Rm and Suga were popular underground rappers and jhope was a popular street dancer before bts, but after joining bts they werent seen as real rappers or real street dancers anymore. Bts who were a hip hop group werent seen as a hiphop group. Since rap line were popular before debut you would assume that would bring in fans right? it was the opposite, everyone turned on them. It got so bad hip hop music critics were inviting bts on their shows only to insult them the entire time on national tv, rappers from big companies were directly dissing bts in songs, bts were bullied by their seniors. All of this was solely based on that they were kpop. The rap line talked about this MANY times in their songs. in 2017, bts released idol where they talk about how they dont care anymore whether people call them idols, artists or whatever. what matters is they love themselves and their music and will continue doing what they do. Over the years they've definitely become more acceptable of the kpop title, but it still doesnt erase the fact they struggled A LOT because of that title
Yes, labeling them as Kpop was more like their shackles both figuratively & mentally. Thanks to Kpop, they were looked down on, mocked & ridiculed, never acknowledged as an artist, and ostracized by the people of the genre you love the most (hip-hop). Kpop never contributed to any of their success, they were parasites sucking BTS dry, what's worse is that, the more BTS grew, Kpop grew too. And till this day BTS never gets properly credited for making Kpop global, not to mention any major label can't wait to replace them. MBC literally said "HYBE (the biggest label in Kpop) was built by SEVENTEEN" The disrespect was just too much!
@rafaelsmith5737 if anything, having the kpop label was a detriment in their global expansion. When BTS came onto the scene, the whole idea of kpop in the west was it being all manufactured performers/songs made by government-backed soulless corporations or a hilarious/weird fad with little substance beyond being fun/pretty to look at. It didn't help the previous attempts of other grps to market to the west had terrible English lyrics in their marketed songs or that the more popular songs were largely seen as silly at surface-level. At most, past attempts helped to create a niche following, which I liken to early western anime fans. And bc they had no real legacy to build off of, BTS had to bear the brunt of burden in carving a path of true artistic consideration/acknowledgement/success through the xenophobic, racist attacks from an industry already predisposed to work against them and determined to not take anything kpop or "boy band" seriously. And it was the same industry that labeled them a boy band. No one else did before that.
@@em5522 You're basically saying if the Kpop Industry didn't attempt to target the Western Market in the first place, BTS wouldn't have faced such unfair treatment entering the Western Market. So are you implying that not only Kpop is a huge burden & hindrance to BTS, they're also bloody thorns BTS has to step in order to succeed?
@@rafaelsmith5737 I wouldn't quite say that bc they'd still have backlash for being a foreign (Asian) boy band, with all the stigma and racism/xenophobia that comes with all that. It's the same stigma prior grps faced and unfortunately, bolstered these stigma rather than overturn them. Plus, the "dark side of kpop" allegations, the substance-less fad image, and the corporate-only manufactured image wouldn't have been as so cemented to work against them as they did bc of how prior kpop acts moved in the western industry.
@@em5522 you've basically proved my point especially in the 2nd paragraph. West seems to look down on boy bands too, so having a foreign boy band appear out of nowhere is far worse. But you must understand racism isn't just the western problem. Even asian & black people are racist too. South Korea for example is quite racist. They aren't any less worse than the West. So facing xenophobia is given. The only problem I have is just the negative image of Kpop made by the previous failed attempts.
3:07 cultural relevance doest equate to substantial growth for his career, PSY was basically a one hit wonder in US. He was already very famous in Korea, and Gangnam style and couple foollowing tracks probably helped him to cement himself in Korea, but he was a one hit wonder and was treated in US as such, when BTS became major player and because of them you see "kpop category" now in major US award shows. Also Psy was treated as funny character with gag song, noone treated him seriously (i was one of those people tbh) same as Ylvis with viral song What does the Fox say, but difference is that Ylvis were a comedy group In some way psy didn't help to integrate asian culture cause he was seen from the perspective of asans as comic reliefs, especially in US where along with black face characters in movies you saw stupid, funny asians, so in some ways he reinforced those xenophobic stereotypes used in movies etc Though you are correct that he had major hit to put asian artist on a map ofusic industry but Bora doesn't argue that, she says that despite his hit it didn't do very much for him personally and even he said it himself You argue a different point here
Thank you for saying this. Sure Gangnam Style went worldwide but after that one, what happened? Idk if Gentleman was after GS but even that one wasn’t as popular lmao. He was never heard from again in the US or around the world in general.
Exactly, and this is not just an opinion but rather a fact. People viewed Gangnam style as a joke/meme song. Most people didn't even know it was PSY's song or even that it was a kpop song to begin with.
26:34 exactly, it is on idol imdustry, they made it with their "family" thing, stanning groups from same label etc. and when bts became bigger than whole kpopcindustry now it turned into: stanning anyone whocis not bts. By the way they are secretly listen to bts, cause somehow they always have bts in their Spotify wrapped 🤷 You will never find people saying: i am stanning artist from Columbia records...this is pure kpop mentality
Kpop is idol music. Korean pop includes more like indie music or even traditional korean music. Most of the general audience especially older generation do not listen to kpop which is heavily influenced by west because its nothing like their set classic korean pop music
Heck even like college student in sk don’t listen to much kpop. (I have heard this from many Koreans as well. Once Koreans reach a certain age it is seems as “too old” to listen to them, in a lot of their minds)
30:23 it’s really not, k-pop artists might do as a genre pop so it’s korean pop but k-pop and korean pop are different things, there are korean pop artists who are not k-pop, and k-pop is not even a term from korea
I even tried to stan multiple groups such as gidle, svt,txt and even twice but except from being funny their discography wasn't strong enough to make me listen to any of them daily, so obviously I wouldn't make post about them so how can the journalist know if I give a chance to other group???
I'm pretty much a rock enjoyer too, BTS was not my first kpop group but the firt I stanned. Nowadays I take a backseat since I like hearing hard hitting song and the group do less of that. If you're a rock enjoyer, I suggest Stray Kids since they have a ton of strong sounds. My first song from them was My Pace and it hit hard, I recommend Battleground and their last title track too which is Lalalala, there's a rock version too. They do a lot of other genre but I think you may like them. I like Stray kids because like BTS they have a lot of meaningful songs.
Digital monsters are artists like IU and other traditional and classical korea singers who are more popular with the older generation. They often do ballad and trot music. BTS is often competing with a a ballad artist called Lim Young woong in many award categories in korea. His main fanbase are older women. Thats why kpop and korean pop are different In korea. Kpop = idol music like black pink/ateez. Korean pop = digital monsters IU/ lim youngwoong and other soloists. There are also other classifications like k rock and k hiphop. BTS kinda fit into all these categories... bts make hiphop music, came from the idol industry and their competition are these huge korean soloists. Its very difficult to categorise bts in korea, thats why they just call them global pop icons or stars.
yep, k-pop as an industry and title comes with the understanding that this is music from companies that use the idol trainee system. artists like IU do pop music that’s in korean but she’s not considered an “Idol” it may be redundant to some ppl but it makes total sense when u think about it like that
3:04 like others have said, psy has been and still is famous in korea but from the worldwide scale he only had one huge hit and people did not take him seriously, many probably did not even know his name, not his fault but that’s how it was, even he himself has talked about it, he put korea on the map for a moment but it was bts who paved the way for korea staying there, it’s because of bts that k-pop is known worldwide, that there are k-pop categories at award shows, that k-pop groups get opportunities like attending us late night shows and so on
I can see why they would separate kpop and Korean pop. Yes kpop is short for Korean pop but it exists as it's own specific industry bubble with a set status quo, subculture, means of operation among the various networks that keep it alive. The biggest aspect of kpop is that, in order to be a part of it, you MUST enter the Korean idol trainee system and debut within that system. There are pre-set steps to be taken and expected promotional activities to engage in. For Korean pop, you are simply a musician who makes pop music in Korea. No idol trainee system. Just a regular musician doing pop music similar to how it's done in the average music spaces. How they functionn and what is expected and even the sort of music that's produced is different.
I don't think you really paid attention to what she said about PSY. Remember Gangnam Style was 12 yrs ago. There was quite a gap between that and BTS becoming more well-known among the general public in the West
I'm not into KPop but I'm a bts fan. I'm one of those general public who was introduced to KPop by BTS. I tried listening to other KPop groups but I really didn't get the hype.... I'm 49 years old and the message of the songs really matters to me. Only BTS captured my heart.
I don't hate other kpop group but i don't love them either. It's a personal preference. When i started listening to BTS, i tried listening to other group as well (and still do) but their music doesn't speak to me. I'm a melody person. Whatever melody speaks to me, i love it. That is what BTS music did to me.
I recommend listening or reacting to BTS vs. K-POP: a video essay by bby gang mag. he goes over what Kpop and idol music is and where the differents is and how BTS fits in there. you are a joy to watch/listen to 😘🥰💜💜💜
There have been so many BTS collabs with korean artists. Off the top of my head Jimin with Taeyang VIBE, Jimin with Taemin, RM with many korean artists and producers on INDIGO eg WILDFLOWER featured Youjeen of CHERRY FILTER, also Kim Sa Wol and Park Ji yoon. All 3 women are older well respected artists with unique and specific voices. Tablo, Colde also the one you asked about is RMs collab with BALMING TIGER SEXY NUKIM. Balming Tiger is very experimental so right up RMs street. Agust D( Suga) SNOOZE beautiful you should react to it. It has the lead singer of the korean band The Rose Kim Woo Sung( exquisite vocals).. Also with PSI( Gangam Style) on THAT THAT. Too many to list really V was recently on IUs single mv as an actor.
I like you girl..... I tried with all the kpop groups and nothing .. I didn't feel anything ... the music was catchy but soulless ..... empty words without meaning and deep messages .... me now I have accepted that Bts is an anomaly in K pop, there is no such thing as them .. they are magnificent .. they are the best artists not in kpop but in the world
16:24 they can't ignore the beast as you say every article about any kpop group ultimately mentions bts, cause they all try to make them part of the conversation with bts, they try to ride BTS coattails, as well as they need more clicks for the article and without bts in it it won't get clicks as much, cause now you have armys talking about it as well as bts haters commenting on it🤷
for many idols being in a group for some time is just a stepping stone to getting famous and starting a solo career, starting acting etc the group is not their focus, priority or end goal in any way
Song at 29:44 is Balming Tiger - 섹시느낌 SEXY NUKIM ft RM, incase nobody told you yet Edit: link below to song m.th-cam.com/video/E-S75YDYY7I/w-d-xo.html&pp=ygUnQmFsbWluZyBUaWdlciAtIOyEueyLnOuKkOuCjCBTRVhZIE5VS0lN
Oh dear , you definitely need to watch BTS paved the way from Boracity magazine. It will explain the difference between BTS and Psy in the western music industry. Psy is great and did do some great things but was not the gateway to the west for KPoP. IF he was it would not have taken so long for another korean act to break into the US.
but that was only psy's popular song in america. he wasnt a gateway for k pop. k pop was and still is for the most part seen as a niche thing. only popular mostly with those that like k pop.
18:41 exactly, k-pop is not a genre, it’s an industry, yeah their may be similar groups or songs but it is never guaranteed like it is on some level within genres
BTS was forced to come up with their own ways of reaching fans, the K Pop industry tried to block them out, the western industry, was okay with them at first thinking they would go away the way Psy did, but now they are blocking them out to make sure, English speaking artists stay on top. I don't think Psy is a one hit wonder now, but truthfully, I love that song but only knew that one song until recently. I only got to know more about him AFTER watching and listening to BTS. Same with the other groups, I have branched out, listened and watched but there is NOBODY on BTS' level in the west or east, only my opinion, as a group and individually. BTS mastered their crafts; vocals, lyrics, dancing, producing, the whole thing. They don't just count on the one fluent in English, the best dancer(s), company writing all their songs (BTS contributes writing, have from the beginning), their dedication to their fans. BTS broke MANY barriers that other K Pop artists benefit from, some acknowledge this while others proclaim they did it (LOL). BTS, they are proud of their Korean heritage, no doubt about it, but trying to keep them in the K Pop industry alone, not working. The only way this is working in the western industry is by DIRTY play, to keep the English speaking artists on top. The numbers are extremely skewed as well, BTS is constantly sabotaged by TH-cam, Spotify, radio.....
KPOP is the IDOL system, and Korean adults usually older than age 21-22, don't tend to listen to K-Pop. You should read the articles that Boracity showed. There is a difference between IDOL music and POP music in South Korea. K-Pop is IDOL music. Korean Pop Music is Korean Pop Music. Go to 13:28 in the Boracity Magazine video, and read the articles. I did the same and realized why she said that. I remember now. Korean music, no matter the genre, has HAN in it. And BTS are packaged as an IDOL group, but their music has HAN in it. unlike other K-Pop music, but very much like Korean music. That's one of the things that makes them different from other K-Pop groups. *HAN definition generalized (because it can't be translated to English) - It's a mix of sorrow, nostalgia, anger, pain, and hope. It's the emotional journey and state of mind of someone who has been gravely wronged but is powerless in society to take revenge, but decides eventually to cling to the hope of a better future when you overcome your HAN. It colors Korean films, dramas, and especially literature. And, regardless of genre, it's in all true Korean music.* Digital Monsters are artists that bring in a lot of numbers, are popular. That's how they compete with BTS. Like IU, she writes her own music, and she would be considered Pop Music. She is the most popular female pop artist in South Korea. (listen/react to IU - Love Wins All, her new song, and V of BTS acts in the music video)
k-pop is a western born term to describe what in SK is called idol music. so no, kpop and korean pop are not the same. you can watch bby gang's video essay on bts vs. kpop :)
Love your hair. It’s true for me there are other kpop groups I listen to but our 7 amazing artists of BTS I listen to everyday because of their diverse genre’s and my love for V’s R&B and Jazz music. Each member have their own musical n Rap differences that are on another level. Love them all, for their individuality, talents and personalities. They’re just MORE!
As far as my understanding goes, i believe they were referred to as "Digital Monsters" because of their songs excellent performance digitally in music shows and views overall compared to k-pop group with distributed views.
I tried to listen other Kpop groups, I like some songs but none give me what BTS give me - everything and more. Well, is BTS Kpop? Yes and no. They themself have mixed feelings about that. They struggled for years to have a place and to be respected by the Kpop industry, RM and Suga struggled to assume their identity as idols coming from underground. So with their underdogs story, they earned the title of kings of Kpop. BUT, with their artistry freedom and versatility, their epic growth to a world wide recognition, their impact to the music industry as an all, their actual "competition" (big Western artists) they said themself that Kpop is not big enough for them. They are just popstars/rapstars/rockstars... And that's it. Even if you don't know much about the Kpop industry, I find you pretty wise on the subject! Keep going! ^^ (The video was very low and your voice very high. It was a bit uncomfortable)
15:51 noone can monopolize what you are listening to, you are free to choose what you listen if ypu don't live in dictatorship country like N.Korea. so when i hear someone saying: bts monopolies....i genuinely think peoe are mental, cause nooneakes you listen to them😭 (this is my general coment, it is not directed at the author of the video btw, "you" is abstact here)
bts of course support others, give advice etc but it is not their job or responsibility to promote etc others, no-one expects for western artists to do that, same as being a fan, like idk if you are a fan of justin bieber no-one expects you to be a fan of all canadian musicians, so why should an army be a fan of all korean artists?
What other song does the general public know of Psy apart from Gangnam style? Most people call him P.S.Y or the Gangnam style dude. While the song was a big hit, this was only for a season. After that, there was nothing else about him, no other kpop group or music became popular in the US or was seen on the charts or highlighted in the media. Kpop was still niche. BTS however had hit after hit and kept climbing up the charts song by song. At award shows they were placed in categories with western artists because no other kpop groups were on the charts. Today kpop is apart of the western music industry and therefore have a category of its own in award shows. And still thats not really even mainstream because they dont get radio play in the west, including BTS.
I am ARMY and I am a music fan. I listen a lot to BTS and also a lot to other music. Music from all over the world and a variety of genres. I would consider myself very open. There are a few K-pop songs I listen to regularly but overall I do not care for K-pop music. I think the reason there is as has been said : I listen to I do not watch. 💜 Love your reaction.
Not it's not Kpop and Korean pop are not the same thing. South Korea doesn't see kpop as part of Korean Popular music. Korean pop music is made by artist's who are not signed to a Kpop Label.
I don't think I've seen someone on youtube who understands the way we do and also shares my same views that BTS is genuinely so different and that it's not wrong it's just fact. People have different tastes and opinions, but people tend to become disrespectful towards bts and army a lot because it's seen as a "trend?" I don't know the right word, just to be disrespectful. If someone doesn't like their music or whatever that's fine. 😂 😊 I'm happy I've found your channel! 😊
korean pop and k pop are not the same thinkg. its literally separated in korea. they dont call it k pop they call it idol music in korea and k pop everywhere else in the world. like jungkook's solo album done completely in english, even in the us they call it a k pop album when its not. its a pop album sung by a korean citizen, its not k pop
accusing people for gravitating to one group and as you said monopolizing the scene is insane like how about you turn that to the actual groups that fail one way or another to compete with the goat for fan's attention bts are involved in kpop thus armys collide and coexist with kpop spaces all the time. it's not like we dont see, dont try, dont give a chance it's that the attempts are not sustainable
As someone who knew about kpop since 2010 but didn't dive more until i met BTS in 2016 I can't agree more with Boracity Magazine's video. At first I discovered a lot of songs that I actually really liked and I became a fan of many groups bc I like some songs (don't judge me I was kid lol) but through the years I realized that actually MANY off the songs were really similar to each other and I found the new music repetitive. Alao, I realized that in many cases if a song did well later you will get hundreds of songs with the same vibes and concepts.. ldk it was really just trends and the artists didn't have a distinct identity. That's why by the pas of the time I lost interest in all of those groups that I was a fan (maybe I was never but since in kpop they took everything as a group project as a kid I thought you had to 💀) Anyways, now I've been an army for almost 8 years and I still find BTS really special, interesting and unique! and their songs and lyrics are so high quality and meaningful. They literally saved my life in 2018 with the love yourself era bc of their honest messages. 💜
BTS' song 'IDOL' mention in some parts their feelings about all those divided opinions about BTS being kpop or not which was something that the members also struggled with specially Namjoon and Yoongi since they come from an underground rap background and got criticized relentlessly for joining an idol group and they themselves also used to think in the same way. Maybe you didn't catch this really well watching the video but in South Korea, there’s a cultural difference between an idol and an artist. It's an actual thing so yeah... kpop and korean pop ARE considered different in korea, kpop is an industry and they have been following the same steps and rules for years. BTS did not grew up following the kpop regular and common way even tho they trained to debut and participated in some kpop shows to promote their songs to survive + BTS never got the kpop industry help and support it all. Because of all of this the discussion exist. Many armys say that bts isn't kpop and some that they are. The ones that agree that BTS is kpop say that BTS is bigger than kpop. BTS definitely did some things that are part of kpop and promote in that environment but they are bigger bc they went beyond that by themselves. That's when the term "BTS Pop" was introduced and started to being mentioned between armys and even articles. Of course is not a real term but it refers of BTS finding their own ways and being successful without any industry support and of course by getting their own distinct artistic identity. BTS Pop is a way of saying "BTS is kpop but also they are in some way separated from it if you look at their story. BTS are bigger and not necessary need to be labeled to an specific genre or whatever and it's because they are themselves, because they are BTS." (Namjoon also talked about this of being labeled in his first mixtape 'RM' back in 2015 🙌) "You can call me artist You can call me idol Or you can call me anything else I don’t care I’m proud of it I’m free No more irony Because I’ve been me all the time" -IDOL (Sorry if my English is bad)
I've been an army for 3 years already and the whole BTS is or isn't Kpop is still a difficult topic to wrap my head around. I remember watching this insightful essay on the topic if you want more data and explanation on this whole thing: th-cam.com/video/rBsZhHPA7t8/w-d-xo.html I as Boracity explain in the video has try other kpop groups but not stick with any. However I do listen to other korean artists (i don't know if they are or aren't kpop :( If I were to recomend other korean artists that you may like i would suggest: So!YoON! (soloist but she is part of a band too) She has a collab with RM (Smoke Sprite: th-cam.com/video/7xTQJbkwSfs/w-d-xo.html) and I really love her last album, specially (Bad: th-cam.com/video/CwqkvjSVBhg/w-d-xo.html) The Rose (band): I fall in love with their music through Back to Me (www.youtube.com/@theroseofficial/videos) and Wonder (th-cam.com/video/dpGU2WHj3VU/w-d-xo.html) and making my way to their whole discography atm (one of the most popular songs is Sorry: th-cam.com/video/CjNpo3uXkwE/w-d-xo.html (REALLY GOOD)) Note: both these artists write and produce their music too 💜
32:00 Digital Monsters are those artists in S.Korean Industry who always have high Streams in digital platforms [like Melon music & Spotify] and always gets big number of voting. these are the true popular music artists/acts in S.Korea. for example, this year AKMU is gonna be one of the digital monsters.
bts themselves had have trouble with the k-pop label due to the hate they got from k-pop and underground scene both but now they really do not label themselves or care what others say but they also carry the k-pop label proudly, i personally try not to use k-pop with bts because for one they are so beyond anyone else in the industry, bts at this point can do whatever they want without thinking about the industry traditions, and the label is just harmful for them due to award shows (making k-pop categories and snubbing them from other relevant categories), streaming platforms (not including them in relevant genre playlists etc, only k-pop) etc using this label to not recognize bts and their music, this is a quote from rm from last year 'You can get sick of Spotify calling us all K-pop, but it works. It’s a premium label. It’s that guarantee of quality that our grandparents fought for.'
Honestly I do used to watch mv of other kpop groups as well while exploring bts but nothing grabbed my attention except a very few songs like stay with me ost,0×1 lovesong, bite me, types of music while now 70% of my playlist is bts songs.......and now I completely can say other kpop is not my taste bcoz its just visual and loud music with whatever lyrics😂....so now watching these things I'm like make good music instead of calling Armys biased towards bts only💜
BTS was blocked from traditional routes through the Kpop industry. They were forced to innovate and forge their own route. Invent inovative marketing strategies. The continued pushback from the industry is because they forced BTS to do that so BTS is now totally independant so does not feed money back into industry pockets. However in order to protect their other artists from similar treatment to BTS Hybe have recently announced their joint venture with a big american company. Forget which one. . Because most of their other artists do not have a 45 million strong passionate ARMY to even the playing field.
I definitely have no love for Kpop but I’m a proud Army and love BTS so much. I personally don’t call them Kpop because their style can’t even stand in the same category with that genre
No that is not correct. BTS blew up in America cuz America came in knocking on the their door and were invited to an award show nobody wanted even though BigHit never intended for them to go global, all this was confirmed by Suga, they were gonna disband. Said award that BTS won, no kpop fan don wanted it so they never push for their faves to have it even though the kpop grps wanted that award. On the other hand, other kpop acts did have America and Europe in their plans but they tried and failed to chart. They charted once with girls gen grp but they couldn’t make it after that. Some 2nd gen grps tried to tour in Europe and America but played to half empty arenas ARENAS. And the big 3 tried so hard to break thru but they couldn’t. Some only made it to top 70-80 in the charts. BTS has so many number 1s
My top 3 groups is this BTS, Enhypen, Stray Kids, I feel more relatable to these 3 groups more especially BTS, and Enhypen more these two groups got some amazing songs more to me, and they know how to make me laugh more especially BTS, Seventeen are funny groups to and talented Kpop group and I do like some of there songs but SVT doesn't have me hook on to them more like BTS and Enhypen does to me I like BTS & Enhypen because they so unique and different and real about who they are who always use a different concept into something different and fresh into their art and stories In their song sometimes it can be fun cool and other times their songs can be mysterious or tell a story in different many meanful different concepts on many things plus they songs are versatile different and unique, I like Stray Kids drill Hip Hop music and their meanful lyrics to. Plus, There are too many Idols in their Seventeen group, I don't know why but it is, what it is I guess. However BTS is Enhypen, and Stray Kids Seniors in business because BTS been in business way longer than them for 11 yrs so yea, BTS has done it all, they are my top main bias Korean group and Enhypen is my bias wrecker youngest 4 generation group than Stray Kids.
They came from that industry but they are not kpop and the difference between ARMY and fans of other groups of kpop industry is that a lot of ARMY don't come from liking othere groups, we were general public. A lot of us like alternative music: indie, rock and don't like kpop.
Psy was seen as a joke and BP is basically how rich and badass they are and how beautiful (shallow) they are. It’s ok to diss the haters but that is all they have!!!!
Why are you always skipping Bora Citys "Conclusion" Part haha?? pls watch the videos till the end! Nice reaction 💜🙌 I hope we will get to see more bts content without you getting to stressed etc.. 💜 take your time and enjoy the ride.. the boys are genuine amazing people and worth every second 🥺🥰
for me personally i can never understand why i must be a fan of the entire industry or care about others just because i love one group, but this does not mean that i am ignoring korean artists on purpose, i still listen to anything i like, i am only a fan of bts, i was a fan of enhypen for a few months but it never felt the same, now i keep up with enhypen and txt a bit because they seem great and have good music but i am not interested in being a fan, i like music from newjeans but that’s all, and then there are more random like 1-3 songs i listen to from different groups and solo artists, but i am not listening or not listening just because they are korean, and in general music from most groups is just repetitive and uninteresting for me and i am not going to force anything just because i love one group from korea
Sorry i came to say that kpop and "idol music" are expessions that can mean the same for us but in this video they are explaining how things are percieved in kpop industry that also comes generally from the way KOREANS have been consuming music. For koreans 'idol music' is trashy and a product bcs its fabricated, and 'korean pop' is real music that is popular for the artistic or cultural value such as Trot music, Balads etc.. so yeah for them there is a huge difference. Have this in mind when you dive into korean music related stuff
Kpop is coined by the west. In South Korea, the "kpop" that the west is referring to (most of the time at least) is labeled as idol music. Initially BTS was not as massive as they are now. Their massive break was when they broke out in the US pushed by their fans. BTS was only as big as they are now in their home country because of their success in the west. Most ppl in South Korea don't even know or heard of BTS until they won their 2nd bbmas. The standard idol group's growth would be to target their home country first (South Korea), then Japan, then China and the rest of Asia. After getting big in Asia, they would then try and push to the west but most groups don't really reach that stage. One of the biggest misconception about Armys is that "Armys only listen to BTS" which is far from the truth. BTS is from the kpop industry but they are not a typical group that most idol groups are. Armys did try to give other kpop groups a chance but most are left disappointed and have given up for the most part.
when you say kpop is just different from bts and that's the reason you are army only, kpop fans get offended and think you disrespected them no, i just said they are different, it's you who put bts as a standart and imagined your group doesnt meet it lol
kpop does NOT mean korean pop. kpop and korean pop are two different things. kpop = idol music = people who have no artistry korean pop = korean artists who write their music and have artistry. the west is the one who confused everyone and never researched what kpop is so now majority of the world calls every korean artist as kpop regardless of the genre when that is WRONG. its not redundant its important. because putting blackpink and bts or blackpink and iu or hieze on the same level is insulting bts, iu and hieze's artistry. idols are not artists so therefore kpop doesnt represent all korean artists it represents people who become "artists" for fame and not for a passion in music. please go back and read the excerpts here at 30:07 to understand better.
Wow! You are incredibly biased and condescending. Yes, Kpop/idol music is different from general Korean pop, but flatly dismissing all Kpop idols as lacking in artistry is just...kinda gross, to be honest.
@@Maria-uv9pd lmao its not gross cause its the truth and koreans think the same otherwise they would not separate idol and artist. if a idol exists where they have artistry then they are automatically considered a artist not just a mere idol. of course bts arent the only ones but there very few. tell kpop labels to stop picking pretty people who have no talent and tell them to focus on vocal training and dance training and GIVE THEM CREATIVE FREEDOM then maybe idols will be taken seriously. literally watch the video i said the exact same thing boracity said. if you "disagree" youre being delusional cause its based on fact not just a opinion. if koreans go out of their way to make the distinction and WANT non koreans to know said distinction then who are you to say its "gross"
@@tastefullyrics4895 First, I'm not calling Koreans' desire for people to understand the nomenclature of their different branches of popular music gross - I'm calling your complete discrediting of one of those branches gross. I do disagree with you and find it laughable that you think your opinion is fact. Boracity is no special arbiter of truth with respect to Kpop, simply a BTS fan who puts together nice video essays. Also, like any other general population, the Korean listening public doesn't have a special ability to sense "real music." It's not the artistic merit of Kpop that makes it unpopular with the general Korean listener: it's just pigeonholed as unserious music for teens, like virtually every other instance of girl/boy groups worldwide. That perception is bolstered by the age of the performers, the song topics, and the style of marketing. I'm not asking you or anyone else to like the majority of Kpop, but I do protest the biased, broad generalization that Kpop lacks artistry.
While I wouldn’t say other idol don’t have artistry (although I do think it is changing & I think that is also due to BTS influence) but I do think it is important the difference between Kpop=idol music & Korean pop music. Most Korean adults & some young adults stop listening to kpop at a certain age. (From my understanding listening to some Koreans talking about it). It is viewed as “being too old” to be fans/stans of idols. I do think many people in K-pop are very talented but just most of the music isn’t for the general public or doesn’t connect to the general public. Why is it bad to be niche?
Thank you well said there Kpop is not Korean Popular music never has been it's Idol Music. Korean Popular (Pop Music) come's from artist who are not normally signed to A Idol or what the west calls A kpop Label. Korean Pop music artist have complete control over their music they are not manufactured by an industry not put together by an in industry.
I think there's never a right answer for this argument. I am army. A really big army few years ago. I do think bts is special an unlike others kpop group. Because my mind set towards kpop at that time was like a bunch of cute idol, cringe lyrics and aegyo, same vocal tone, same faces. So what made me think that bts is the only different group is mostly because they are all unique in term of faces, talents, and voices. Of course I was biased I admit it. But few years ago, I decided to listen to some other groups. Especially seventeen. I realized that ouh they are unique too? So there are actually other unique group like bts? I'm not saying they are the same. What I'm trying to say they are similar in term of artisty. I read comments here saying that other kpop groups songs are mostly soulless, and are not as diverse as bts. It just you didn't dive into them more. I found many gem after giving some groups a listen. People mostly wouldn't agree because it's an opinion.
If we compare popularity then look at the thing you mentioned about pink venom MV containing the statue of Hindu god 'Lord Ganesha', I'm from India and I'm Hindu as well ans it's just so offending for me to see someone dancing front of god wearing those clothes cuz it's forbidden in our religion we have 1.5B population in our country and 80% of them are Hindus and we're so sensitive when it comes to religion that MV still exists on TH-cam because none of Hindus know about it if they found out that MV will have atleast 200M+ dislikes and reports but at the same time if BTS would've done that then definitely our whole country would've found out about it cuz they are so huge and popular here even though so many people hate them here but still they know what BTS is but about black pink they might have heard their name but never listen to them cuz I personally feel their music is shitty, you can listen to their songs maybe one,two or three time but then those songs starts to irritate you they're just beats,EDM and heavy sound that's it.. is that called music??
Boracity is a little arrogant and sometimes a little bit of but overall I can always appreciate her vids as her data is usually very solid. But she was very right when she said Psy was treated like a weird phenomenon and than dimissed. People often thought he was Chinese even. I'm not even entirely sure you can call "Gangnam Style" K-pop but Korean music. The song has a message but few people know that. BTS members are musicians and while there are more musicians in the industry a lot of them are performers with - in part at least - little power in the development of their discography. Mind you that is changing and there were always exceptions. For example HYBE groups do have control. Stray Kids write almost exclusively their own music. G-Dragon is still famous for his music writing. (G)I-DLE definetly writes part of their music at least. Nevermind that already in the first new decade of this millenia K-pop artist tried to break ito the Western industry. Bang PD worked at first with his good friend JYP. Together they went to the USA in the early 2000s to create synergy with a Western label and were dissmised. Bang was unhappy with JYP leaving his socks lying around the room and they "fought". This - with a grin - is said by Bang was the beginning of him founding his own label Big Hit Entertainment in 2005. (Sidenote: Blackpink had - in the last few years - to cut two of their MVs - once for being direspectfull and doing something you shouldn't with the statue of a God - something that the people of this religion were very angry about but people not in the know where not bothered about at all - but it was definetly safer to do it) But other artists were supposed to too: BOA had an English album, WonderGirls made it unto the HOT100 and went on tour with - I believe - the Jonas Brothers etc. It just had no real impact. BTS didn't specificall target the West untill "Fire" i think but they put everything online and well... Army discovered it and showed it to the world heavily doing the promotions that BTS and Big Hit couldn't. And yes, that was Megan thee Stallion - she did a remix of Butter - even had to sue her label to do it. I think BTS will also make a song/remix of her music when they are back? They usually do exchange work with other artists. The other artist was Coldplay - BTS did a remix of "Fix You" for MTV Unplugged and they have a song together "My Universe" (with a creation documentary) and Chris Martin (and Coldplay) wrote "The Astronaut" for Jin - Jin wrote the Korean lyrics - is on the track with his son and even features as a TV host - also the guitar he gifted Jin is the MV. Jin sang that song live in Buenos Aires at a Coldplay concert - with a movie theater livestream - before entering service. You can watch Suga's Suchwita variety show: among others he had 2 members of TXT and members of Seventeen on it. So was Taemin. There are crossovers - for performances mostly - music is far more often done with with Korean musicians that are not part of the Idol industry like Balming Tiger ("Sexy Nukim (ft. RM of BTS)" was the song you asked for), Epik High, Crush, Youjeen from Cherry Filter etc. Why did you skip the Conclusion? If you like it more intellectual/less agressive I'd try bby gang mag/Eliot Sang: - BTS vs. K-pop (has a good definition of what K-pop even is) - you are wrong about K-pop (because some narratives are just weird) - BTS: More than K-pop (the difference) - How BTS paved the way And as pointed out Korean music has other sections than Idol Music which you call K-pop: K-Hiphop for example or R'n'B or Trot music - watch the first named 2 video essays by bby gang mag to understand what boracity also means. Otherwise "The Rise of Bangtan"-series gives a lot of context and explains so much - it is themed. At the beginning it is a little rough and sometimes a bit too subtle for a beginner but I think as a whole it gets the points across (or people can correct it in the comment or at least explain). The Bonus is also very funny. You nice! Keep going! 💜
you know what ..i really like your reaction but I can't watch till the end coz the screen so small & the volume so low.i can't adjust your voice & the video volume .when i increase my volume ..your voice is too loud & vice versa.sorry for that .its a regret
MBC literally said "HYBE (the biggest label in Kpop) was built by SEVENTEEN"
The disrespect was just too much!
Also Psy was treated as funny character with gag song, noone treated him seriously (i was one of those people tbh) same as Ylvis with viral song What does the Fox say, but difference is that Ylvis were a comedy group
In some way psy didn't help to integrate asian culture cause he was seen from the perspective of asans as comic reliefs, especially in US where along with black face characters in movies you saw stupid, funny asians, so in some ways he reinforced those xenophobic stereotypes used in movies etc
Though you are correct that he had major hit to put asian artist on a map ofusic industry but Bora doesn't argue that, she says that despite his hit it didn't do very much for him personally and even he said it himself
You argue a different point here
Thank you for saying this.
Exactly everyone in my school were saying gangnam style was weird ...and made fun of me saying I listen to "chingchong music" 😪
26:34 exactly, it is on idol imdustry, they made it with their "family" thing, stanning groups from same label etc. and when bts became bigger than whole kpopcindustry now it turned into: stanning anyone whocis not bts. By the way they are secretly listen to bts, cause somehow they always have bts in their Spotify wrapped 🤷
You will never find people saying: i am stanning artist from Columbia records...this is pure kpop mentality
29:43 it's a collab with balming tiger and rm song called sexy nukim
I love the song especially rm's verse and delivery, you should check it out!
Yeah, I listened to a lot of K-pop too...nothing grabbed my attention. Maybe individual songs. I keep listening to BTS, metal and rock...
Same. My holy trinity of bands are BTS, Guns n roses and AC/DC.
Digital monsters are artists like IU and other traditional and classical korea singers who are more popular with the older generation. They often do ballad and trot music.
BTS is often competing with a a ballad artist called Lim Young woong in many award categories in korea. His main fanbase are older women.
Thats why kpop and korean pop are different
In korea.
I didn't feel anything ... the music was catchy but soulless ..... empty words without meaning and deep messages .... me now I have accepted that Bts is an anomaly in K pop, there is no such thing as them .. they are magnificent .. they are the best artists not in kpop but in the world
Soulless that is the word, generic, boring, bad noise (there is good noise in metal) and cringe as heck
16:24 they can't ignore the beast as you say every article about any kpop group ultimately mentions bts, cause they all try to make them part of the conversation with bts, they try to ride BTS coattails, as well as they need more clicks for the article and without bts in it it won't get clicks as much, cause now you have armys talking about it as well as bts haters commenting on it🤷
Digital monsters, when it comes to digital sale there is no group compare to BTS’ digital sales
for many idols being in a group for some time is just a stepping stone to getting famous and starting a solo career, starting acting etc the group is not their focus, priority or end goal in any way
Song at 29:44 is Balming Tiger - 섹시느낌 SEXY NUKIM ft RM, incase
nobody told you yet

And, regardless of genre, it's in all true Korean music.*
Digital Monsters are artists that bring in a lot of numbers, are popular.
Please watch : *Why BTS is Treated UNFAIR in korea* .... you will understand the kpop industry more
As far as my understanding goes, i believe they were referred to as "Digital Monsters" because of their songs excellent performance digitally in music shows and views overall compared to k-pop group with distributed views.
Keep going! ^^
(The video was very low and your voice very high. It was a bit uncomfortable)
Actually if we talk very honest BTS is just so much more than kpop!!!! Their records and achievements in the mainstream will remain unwavering
Girl, you earned my subscription.. love how real you are on your opinions..
I agree. They are not just Kpop...
Love your reaction.
😊 I'm happy I've found your channel! 😊
korean pop and k pop are not the same thinkg. its literally separated in korea. they dont call it k pop they call it idol music in korea and k pop everywhere else in the world. like jungkook's solo album done completely in english, even in the us they call it a k pop album when its not. its a pop album sung by a korean citizen, its not k pop
accusing people for gravitating to one group and as you said monopolizing the scene is insane like how about you turn that to the actual groups that fail one way or another to compete with the goat for fan's attention
bts are involved in kpop thus armys collide and coexist with kpop spaces all the time. it's not like we dont see, dont try, dont give a chance
it's that the attempts are not sustainable
the audio was too low. a little higher for the older Armys lol
BTS are bigger and not necessary need to be labeled to an specific genre or whatever and it's because they are themselves, because they are BTS." (Namjoon also talked about this of being labeled in his first mixtape 'RM' back in 2015 🙌)
"You can call me artist
You can call me idol
Or you can call me anything else
I don’t care
I’m proud of it
I’m free
No more irony
Because I’ve been me all the time"
-IDOL
(Sorry if my English is bad)
I've been an army for 3 years already and the whole BTS is or isn't Kpop is still a difficult topic to wrap my head around. I remember watching this insightful essay on the topic if you want more data and explanation on this whole thing: th-cam.com/video/rBsZhHPA7t8/w-d-xo.html
I as Boracity explain in the video has try other kpop groups but not stick with any. However I do listen to other korean artists (i don't know if they are or aren't kpop :(
If I were to recomend other korean artists that you may like i would suggest:
So!YoON! (soloist but she is part of a band too) She has a collab with RM (Smoke Sprite: th-cam.com/video/7xTQJbkwSfs/w-d-xo.html) and I really love her last album, specially (Bad: th-cam.com/video/CwqkvjSVBhg/w-d-xo.html)
The Rose (band): I fall in love with their music through Back to Me (www.youtube.com/@theroseofficial/videos) and Wonder (th-cam.com/video/dpGU2WHj3VU/w-d-xo.html) and making my way to their whole discography atm (one of the most popular songs is Sorry: th-cam.com/video/CjNpo3uXkwE/w-d-xo.html (REALLY GOOD))
Note: both these artists write and produce their music too 💜

Digital Monsters are those artists in S.Korean Industry who always have high Streams in digital platforms [like Melon music & Spotify] and always gets big number of voting. these are the true popular music artists/acts in S.Korea.
for example, this year AKMU is gonna be one of the digital monsters.
bts themselves had have trouble with the k-pop label due to the hate they got from k-pop and underground scene both but now they really do not label themselves or care what others say but they also carry the k-pop label proudly, i personally try not to use k-pop with bts because for one they are so beyond anyone else in the industry, bts at this point can do whatever they want without thinking about the industry traditions, and the label is just harmful for them due to award shows (making k-pop categories and snubbing them from other relevant categories), streaming platforms (not including them in relevant genre playlists etc, only k-pop) etc using this label to not recognize bts and their music, this is a quote from rm from last year 'You can get sick of Spotify calling us all K-pop, but it works.
Thank you for your nonbiased opinion. Army will always except you
I definitely have no love for Kpop but I’m a proud Army and love BTS so much.
BTS has so many number 1s

trust me Korean Pop is differentiated from K-pop by music critics. there are two types of popular music in S. Korea, idol music & popular music
I have no interest in kpop outside of BTS and trust me I tried. I love the rose though and IU
My top 3 groups is this BTS, Enhypen, Stray Kids, I feel more relatable to these 3 groups more especially BTS, and Enhypen more these two groups got some amazing songs more to me,
and they know how to make
me laugh more especially BTS,
Seventeen are funny groups to
and talented Kpop group and
I do like some of there songs but
SVT doesn't have me hook on to
them more like BTS and Enhypen does to me I like BTS & Enhypen
because they so unique and different and real about who they are who always use a different concept into something different
and fresh into their art and stories
In their song sometimes it can be
fun cool and other times their songs can be mysterious or
tell a story in different many meanful different concepts on
many things plus they songs are versatile different and unique, I like Stray Kids drill Hip Hop music and their meanful lyrics to.
Plus, There are too many Idols in
their Seventeen group, I don't know why but it is, what it is I guess.
However BTS is Enhypen, and
Stray Kids Seniors in business
because BTS been in business
way longer than them for 11 yrs
so yea, BTS has done it all, they
are my top main bias Korean group
and Enhypen is my bias wrecker
youngest 4 generation group than
Stray Kids.
Please react on boracity's bts paved the way 💜 borahae
You are right, BP I have not seen a good lyrical song from them. They have bangers but empty inside, no soul, no nothing
Why are you always skipping Bora Citys "Conclusion" Part haha?? pls watch the videos till the end!
Nice reaction 💜🙌
I hope we will get to see more bts content without you getting to stressed etc.. 💜 take your time and enjoy the ride..
the boys are genuine amazing people and worth every second 🥺🥰
megan did a butter remix with bts
for me personally i can never understand why i must be a fan of the entire industry or care about others just because i love one group, but this does not mean that i am ignoring korean artists on purpose, i still listen to anything i like, i am only a fan of bts, i was a fan of enhypen for a few months but it never felt the same, now i keep up with enhypen and txt a bit because they seem great and have good music but i am not interested in being a fan, i like music from newjeans but that’s all, and then there are more random like 1-3 songs i listen to from different groups and solo artists, but i am not listening or not listening just because they are korean, and in general music from most groups is just repetitive and uninteresting for me and i am not going to force anything just because i love one group from korea
and well of course i listen to music from non-korean artists too
Off topic: you are so cute 🥺 your hair is so pretty.
Army Independence Day is my favorite holiday 💜
Your hair is so pretty. Cool reaction.
when you say kpop is just different from bts and that's the reason you are army only, kpop fans get offended and think you disrespected them
no, i just said they are different, it's you who put bts as a standart and imagined your group doesnt meet it lol
In my last 3 years I have been a BTS army, I don’t like any other group. I do not like any kpop group, only BTS. Me as a heavy metal hard rock fan
Everything Boracity I have seen it
Your reaction is nice keep going 💜
I love psy, but he was a novelty.
kpop does NOT mean korean pop. kpop and korean pop are two different things.
kpop = idol music = people who have no artistry
korean pop = korean artists who write their music and have artistry.
the west is the one who confused everyone and never researched what kpop is so now majority of the world calls every korean artist as kpop regardless of the genre when that is WRONG. its not redundant its important. because putting blackpink and bts or blackpink and iu or hieze on the same level is insulting bts, iu and hieze's artistry.
idols are not artists so therefore kpop doesnt represent all korean artists it represents people who become "artists" for fame and not for a passion in music. please go back and read the excerpts here at 30:07 to understand better.
For future video's can you turn the volume up on the video your watching because it was difficult to hear what the person is saying.
Estas engañandote¡¡ PSY si fué un éxito, pero la mayoria del PG que lo escuchó no sabía que era coreano y no tomaban enserio su canción¡¡
I like bold! 🤟 Let's keep it real! 💜
Also, UDDER PEOPLE! 🤐
Psy music are bangers
(Sidenote: Blackpink had - in the last few years - to cut two of their MVs - once for being direspectfull and doing something you shouldn't with the statue of a God - something that the people of this religion were very angry about but people not in the know where not bothered about at all - but it was definetly safer to do it)
But other artists were supposed to too: BOA had an English album, WonderGirls made it unto the HOT100 and went on tour with - I believe - the Jonas Brothers etc.
If you like it more intellectual/less agressive I'd try bby gang mag/Eliot Sang:
- BTS vs. K-pop (has a good definition of what K-pop even is)
- you are wrong about K-pop (because some narratives are just weird)
- BTS: More than K-pop (the difference)
- How BTS paved the way
And as pointed out Korean music has other sections than Idol Music which you call K-pop: K-Hiphop for example or R'n'B or Trot music - watch the first named 2 video essays by bby gang mag to understand what boracity also means.
You nice! Keep going! 💜
armys*
The video was way to quiet and your voice too loud
ARMY can’t STAND kpop.
you know what ..i really like your reaction but I can't watch till the end coz the screen so small & the volume so low.i can't adjust your voice & the video volume .when i increase my volume ..your voice is too loud & vice versa.sorry for that .its a regret
Noted! Thanks for taking the time to mention it
