I love this movie! It taught us about the importance of mental health. Joy just wanting Riley just be happy, but denying her a chance to be sad just only make things worse. So she learned that letting out your feelings makes your mind balanced and find your inner peace.
Riley needed to be sad because she experiencing quite a traumatic change but she was supressing sadness to be her parents happy kid. This is expressed in the film with Joy constantly constraining Sadness and eventually both of them were gone from Rileys mind for a period of time.
"Your childhood wasn't that bad. I'vee seen it. " the WORST thing you can say to anyone that is telling you about the sadness they have felt. He clearly couldn't relate. Sorry you felt so sad as a kid. "Had to pretend to be happy" says a lot ❤
I think, the reason why Sadness was the only one able to change the memory into sadness, is because Riley in this was feeling sad and like, real sadness. She needs to feel that way to balance the joy and happiness Joy has been controlling and giving her. Sometimes, we need to feel sad to balance the emotions leading to real happiness. Sadness brings sympathy and understanding, at times more than just pure joy all the time(or I should say, TOXIC POSITIVITY).

When people get so mad with sadness and look at her as the villain... The story is about sadness trying to come out because of Riley's situation. It was natural to feel that emotion.. undergoing changes due to moving to a different place, seeing things would never be the same again since they moved to a different place. It's normal to remember those memories feeling sad. But she was being repressed because they thought that Riley should always be happy. She wasn't allowed to feel sadness when she actually needed to cry. Which of course isn't healthy. Not facing emotions and allowing to feel it fully isn't healthy.
Ye the most likely reason sadness can turn other memories blue is because of her being supressed and sadness always being present or needing to be present before-hand.

Commentators keep coming down on Sadness, but the real villain is Joy because she expects Riley to be happy all the time. But that's not good. We need sadness because sadness helps us to deal with hard times and it helps us to empathize with other people, which is why the mother's main emotion was Sadness (Empathy). Like when Bing Bong's rocket was destroyed. Joy wanted to pretend like everything was okay, but Sadness helped Bing Bong deal with the loss and it made him feel better, and then there's the memory of Riley feeling bad because she missed the winning shot which caused her team to lose the championship. Joy finally realized how important Sadness is when she said "Mom, dad, the team- they came to help because of Sadness". The point is, we all have these emotions for a reason, and they all have a purpose in our lives, including Sadness.
Prehaps Pixars most relatable story to everyone. We've all at some point gone through a transitional period that is hard to adjust to and it does a good job of telling that way through anthropromorphic emotions inside Rileys head. I absolutely love this movie and can't wait for you guys to react to the sequel when it comes to streaming!
