  • The old church at Affane is an archetypal Board of First Fruits Church, built in 1819 to serve the Church of Ireland parishioners of the area around Affane and Villierstown. The Board of First Fruits was an institution set up to build and improve churches throughout Ireland in the 18th and early part of the 19th century, well over 700 churches were built or adapted during the board’s lifetime. Affane church has a very simple design with a single-bay three-stage entrance tower on its west side, it cost £500 to construct at the time. The graveyard that surrounds the church has a large number of attractive tombs, headstones and mausoleums, mostly dating from 1820 to 1920, indicating that there was a large Protestant community in the local area in the 18th and 19th century. Affane Church is certainly one of the most atmospheric ruins I have visited over the past number of years, amplified by nature’s relentless encroachment on the graves and markers of those now forgotten.

My Grand Mother told me we all die two times. The first is physical death and the second is when there is no one left who remembers and loves you. I think that is so true. RIP grandmother I miss and love you. she was 95 when she passed in 2020. ❤

Thank you! When I was a child I disciplined with horror stories. I became afraid of human remains. In my 30s I read every book on the subject that I thought was relevant and became comfortable around death after a few years. Death is inevitable and fascinating. I really liked the books embalmers wrote. I even worked in a funeral home by myself cleaning and painting for a week. I think our society makes us afraid because they hide it. I would bet that those that are bones and dust would not mind. "Take a good look, as I am you shall be". I think the dead have a great sense of humor.

I was on the live chat, but I had to watch it again because I was at a restaurant and couldn't fully watch it. I must say, this is probably one of the most interesting graveyards so far and I'm glad you returned. The part I like best is the older area that had all of the wrought iron railings, that was very cool! The carving on some of those headstones is so detailed and amazing that they have held up so well over time. And also, I like bones (yes, I'm a little odd) I think I've mentioned before to either you or Sue that I'm a physical therapist asst. and I have 20 years experience with bones...and, yes, those were femur bones in the one crypt, and I also saw part of a pelvic bone. AWESOME VIDEO GV!!!

Valentine married Ruth Godolphin, the family who imported the famous line of Godolphin Arabians- whom all our thoroughbred racehorses are descended from. The Godolphin family also married Churchills- and I am sure that is familiar to all. His wife was of more historical importance than he, and her name never mentioned.
Those tall pink flowers are Purple Loosetrife. Tinctures of which are said to be a calmative and ease grief. The bulbs were planted on purpose at one time and they spread throughout the fenced area. In actuality tinctures of loosestrife have vitamin C, so good for scurvy.

Blessings and Hello! here from the U.S.A, I am always intrigued, interested and enlightened by your searches, findings and facts of Churches, Chapels and resting places of Ireland's deseased. So we'll done, as if I'm there traveling and discovering along in your presence. This episode particularly interested and moved me. Those poor forgotten in death, neglected, abandoned, without names, dates, or only rocks for markers; it's saddening yet a bit hopeful, and I'll mention why.
Perhaps it's possible to gather area volunteers and include a Director of the grounds, to clear this graveyard of the numerous trees, underbrush and ground cover to save the memorials from further damages and dislocation, uncover hidden, undiscovered burials and to recover the burial ground's landscape as close as it would have been ages ago, or at best, up to present day respect, dignity and standards. It's so saddening to see such neglect and abject forgotteness of those from that area in Ireland and the lives and times they had and endured there, as a life spent or sacrificed. The ruins of the Church should be supported from further ruination, clearing the overgrowth there too. It's worthy of designation and the distinction of being a historic and culturally significant landmark of Irish faith, worship and a mortal remains resting place. May this come to be, and so, inspired by this episode I penned:
May a blessing come, May this be done, For sake of ages past, In wake of Time to last, For those of God once begotten, Souls and mem'ries ne'er forgotten; By earth and ether comes life's demise, As death and angels close our eyes, Reflect your own, This path to follow, Those before and after, Leave mortal trails of sorrow, yet-The Word doth promise fairer fields of joy, As true to heart, Your faith employ, From all your cares, Sweet rest you'll find, En-earthed, in heaven, by love divine, Of mound or mark, Then all is hushed, Lain aside, as ashe and dust. . . .
A blessing come, may this be done, For sake of ages now or past, In wake of Time at last, For those of Christ, alike in vision, Tombs known or unknown, each called "Be 'Risen!" Lo-Into sacred yards enter, be still as you go, Hear yet an other stillness, all shall come to know, Stay awhile and know their rest, Gently pause and reverence death, Acquaint a moment with life's deceased, pray- Stay awhile and know their peace, An Holy peace, as savèd souls unfettered! Christ's blessèd peace eternal now, in life as in death, The Savior Divine and Interceptor. . . .

Wonderful video. Thanks for your time and information on this interesting graveyard. It is not offensive to me at all. I remember walking into the Houston, Texas museum and not even 40 feet inside and my daughter is telling me there is a dead man in the room with her stepfather. Well it was a Mummy. You could see parts 9f the body even his missing toe. I was not amused at all about my daughter's nightmare that very night. Now to me Mummy's are intrusive. They have been removed from where they were interred. When you show something it is done with respect. You do not remove anything. I will keep on watching.

the top of tombs being not on top of the tombs, could it not be grave robbers or maybe even earth quakes or tremors, but the reason I think not, is the tomb stone lids are not broken but placed besides the grave, which makes me think maybe grave robbers or something like that. They took the top off thinking the coffin would be inside the tomb, but they might not have realized the coffin is below the tomb chest buried at about 2 meters. They probably did that, as opportunists thinking it was going to be easy pickings. It is strange how most of the deaths are the late 1800's, maybe most of them died of the famine or other illnesses?

The grounds of Affane Old Church of Ireland, as seen from above, appears to be woodland and the video shows "Yew", "Sycamore"* and "Common Laurel" to be the main components of the 'woodland'. The multi-stem evergreen shrub "Common Laurel" or "Cherry Laurel" (Prunus laurocerasus), was introduced to the British Isles in about 1576 and is now naturalised throughout the UK and Ireland. The cherry like fruit of the "Common Laurel" germinate freely and grow in almost any soil except shallow, chalk soils. The video shows that attempts are being made in the churchyard to manage the growth of laurels and self-set trees, by cutting them to ground level. I would assume that this work is being carried out by volunteers, in favour of returning the grounds to a wildflower meadow with mown grass paths. Given the isolated rural location of the church and lack of facilities, it is commendable to get folks to carry out such unpaid conservation works. The churchyard doubtless serves today as a wildlife conservation area and may be utilized as an area to teach conservation and woodland skills. Obviously the clearance of the laurels and self-set trees impacting on memorials is a priority when working to a Conservation Management Plan. Cleaning privately owned headstones and monuments is another issue best left to those with the requisite conservation skills, as the soft stone of some monuments and inscriptions thereon could easily be damaged by the application of inappropriate methods. [Note* Those viewing the video from the US, should understand that invasive "Sycamore" (Acer pseudoplatanus) is a maple and not to be confused with the "Buttonwood" or "American Sycamore" (Platanus occidentalis), which is a difficult tree to cultivate and establish in the UK and Ireland.]

regarding the fallen tops, I have an idea about that. what I'm thinking is freezing water combined with wind and uneven settling causes them to slip off. you may or may not be familiar with the desert traveling stones that leave trails for no apparent reason. there is a reason, and it has to do with water ice and wind. I suspect something like that here.

I’m thinking that the crumpled coffin in the crypt probably got filled with water and the weight made it crumple like that

There is a lot of history in old cemetery's. That is how I found my relatives in America and I found that my grandparents came from Ireland(Wheelers) France(Perry's) Germany(Batzel's) and also Britain. It goes back to the 1600's. That one you found the couple who both passed in 1939 do you think they died together in a tragic accident or disease? We honor our dead and they should be remembered. I love that old church. Many people attended that church back then and probably buried there.

I think the chest tomb tops come off because of people moving them (for unknown reasons). For the crypt of Catherine Clarke I wonder what happened to the casket or was her body just wrapped in a shroud? Sad that she died so young!
The view of the crypt at the end was fascinating. Sad to see water infiltration damaging the coffins. Thank you!

@@GraveVisitations how do you plan to organize this? This issue seems to be common in the South and it is a serious 🧐 problem. I would like to join you, please let me know. Who is the Mayor of this town? My goodness!!!! There is a group of people who mow lawns for free. Not sure if they would want to do a cemetery and in case they would agree these remain will have to be picked up and the tombs recemented and power washed . Christ have mercy!!!!
