I found this regarding zippers: "The product debuted at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, but it didn't have much success. The modern zipper was eventually designed in 1913 by Gideon Sundback. He worked at the Universal Fastener Company in Hoboken, New Jersey. Sundback received a patent for his “Separable Fastener” in 1917."
I'm leaning heavily towards a stolen purse dump. If that purse was buried with someone in an old mausoleum, there would be mold and discoloration as the body goes through the putrefaction process and stains the coffin fabrics and anything inside and the zipper would be extremely rusty or rusted away. If you Google "antique purse 1800s" the images show purses that fasten at the top with a snap. The red one there is tightly stitched and the zipper is on the side like a side pocket for a modern purse. I think it was pushed through the window/vent on the backside that had the tree branch in it. The location of the purse bears this out from looking where it landed.

@@SerenitySueGraveyards @SMLE, I respectfully disagree and doubt it's a stolen purse. I reckon the purse was left (with coins in) by a relative many years or generations later (laid by the coffin). Some of us Irish Catholics do such things. I doubt we will ever know. Best wishes SMLE. Great video Sue, thank you.

I would go back & try to retrieve it with some long handled grabbers. It probably has an ID in it & that is why it was thrown in there. Would be an interesting find.

It seems to have a lot of people from belgium in the mausoleum.

Oh, Bless you Sue & GV for the many bumpy, wet, overgrown cemeteries you have made your way through so that we can get a glimpse of history!…not to mention an occasional “sit down” in wet, mucky grass! With each video you do- So many questions gallop through my head! Why did these families bury their loved ones in mausoleums…in wood coffins ( which were the only material available unless they used stone)…knowing that they would disintegrate over time and knowing that family members would not be around to do upkeep? It’s amazing to see the intricate headstones and crosses, etc used to honor a family member who has passed-but unless someone is buried in the ground to become one with the soil-how does it make sense to make these elaborate towering monuments only to see them fall apart or become unreadable??
