Damn I forgot about tv lol. I’ve been seeing it online, so I know it’s pretty saturated. This doesn’t bode well. Unless this was going to be an amazing film, venom isn’t Batman or Spider-Man. I’d put him above ant man if it was a marvel project lol

I think a key difference between horror and other genres is that a bad horror movie can still be a load of fun. You could say the same thing about an action spectacle, but those can't be made on such a limited budget.

With regard to Lon asking about the crazy shots for the climbing movie, my guess would be drones.
Mythbusters was one of the first shows I've noticed that did that. They attach Go-Pros or other high quality, small-sized camera to drones and they get those high-elevation, crazy sweeping shots that were previously only achievable with helicopters using drones.
Maybe they did the same thing for these small-budget documentary pics?

    Steps to Profit:
    1. Make a cliche but low budget horror film with a wide release and ad campaign
    2. Get trashed by critics and cinemascore
    3. Get a return of 5x the budget

Also, is Dan's 31 Days of Halloween list online anywhere? I'd be really interested to see what you're planning to see this month. I don't have a lot of plans set in stone, but I'm hoping to see movies every day as well. I started off today with Alone in the Dark (1982), which was a lot of crazy fun. :)

The reason why Horror is such a safe bet is because horror is universal and goes back to the earliest days of our evolution. Everyone is afraid of something and fear is a survival tool that triggers a fight or flight response. By watching horror in a safe environment, we are able to confront our fears and strengthen of survival skills. Horror is my favorite genre and I believe that it's the BEST genre cause it's the only genre of film aside from fantasy and to some extent, sci-fi where the creative possibilities are literally endless. As Dan said, horror is cheap to make and you don't even haf to have a budget to make a horror film. You pretty much need a video camera, some people willing to act, some Halloween costumes you have lying around, a small location such as a house or forest, a computer for editing and your passion and creativity. A good example is if you need blood but can't afford makeup, just use ketchup! Horror is a great genre to start out in and some of the best film directors like Peter Jackson started out making horror movies.

  • @brentage5000

Lon is so right at 17:08. One of the few movies to keep me up terrified at night, The Grudge (2004), suffered from being a remake, a Japanese adaptation, AND a horror movie. Despite that, it made its budget back a few times over. The main reason that I can see for that (and like Mama, another movie I loved) is that unlike a lot of films before it, it was a slow burn that let you get to know and sympathize with the characters. That, I think, is the key -- making the audience care for the people before putting them in Hell.

Isn't it a bad sign when there's an embargo on movie reviews?

    • @karutacowboy7477
      @karutacowboy7477 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Not really, I think they're in place for marketing purposes like they don't want a review out too early so if someone were to recommend the movie, the person who takes the recommendation doesn't have to wait long to see it. But yeah, it can also be used to hold off bad reviews if they expect their movie to be poorly received. Though I think Cinema Score and word of mouth from the people close to us has more of an effect on box office yields.

    • @charlmane1995

Staying with horror movies: how different are the legs on horror movies that open in the 6 weeks before Halloween compared to the normal earn-out for movies of the same Cinema Score? Seems like they would have a longer tail and wind up earning more than is otherwise expected.

I'm really curious to see how Venom does. I imagine the budget would have to be huge on this, because the marketing has been all over for this movie. I feel like the movie is either going to flop hard on opening weekend, or make a ton of money opening weekend, but have no legs to continue forward, while still being a moderately successful film for Sony. I can't see a world where this movie makes a huge profit.

I’m guessing that romance, comedy, drama, and sci-fi all rely on culture-specific values and inside-culture-jokes that don’t translate as well into other cultures. But since horror appeals to the instinctual fears (supernatural forces, death, pain etc.) that all humanity faces, no matter your cultural background, it has the potential to be thrilling and engaging. And each movie can provide that familiar rush of adrenaline, and make you question again: Can you face your fears? Hence, why horror seems to be the most consistently profitable (compared to budget) both domestically and internationally.
Also, a lower budget could represent a closer-to-home feel, as if the things on screen could really be happening to you or your family; whereas if you have a big budget, shiny, overdone film, it becomes that much more difficult to suspend your disbelief and immerse yourself into the movie’s world.

I HAVE CRACKED THE FORMULA GUYS!!!
The reason people keep watching shitty horror movies again and again is deep rooted in human psychology.
Just like in horror movies the humans cant stop themselves from going into the dark room or follow the strange noises, turning back, switching on the lights blah blah blah... people in real life also cant resist themselves from going to see horror movies in hordes no matter how the quality is. Its something you cant just look away from.

I don't really go nuts for horror movies, but "Don't Breathe" is one of the best movies I've ever seen. Like it's in my top ten. Sadly, it was overlooked by "Get Out" because "Get Out" had that extra layer of the race-related theme. Both are good, but "Don't Breathe" is way more tense.

I feel like Venom will be a couple of steps above hot garbage. Not as crappy as both seasons of Iron Fist but definitely not great. I hope I'm wrong. But, I'm still going to wait for this to come out on Netflix. Why? Because as ubiquitous as the marketing has been, they completely messed up on the first impression of the Venom character. Instead of making him menacing, they made him sound like an unfunny, low rent Deadpool with a messed up voicebox. It might come in #1 next week but "A Star is Born" will be a close 2nd. And could be a surprise #1. I can honestly say I've heard more people state ASIB is a "day one" than Venom in recent weeks.

I don't think they'll do a review for that given it's based on a show most of them don't watch. The best bet would be Emma and/or Joe (they went to the premiere in L.A.) but she's not on Screen Junkies enough to do anime content for them. That and it only played just above 500 screens here so it wasn't big enough to gain more attention for non-anime people. It'd be cool though! I'd love if someone did a review of it, I loved it too!

On Deadline on September 13th, they had tracking for Venom at 60-70 mil and Star is Born at 25 mil+. I would bet that Venom will still be number one next weekend but that it will make closer to 60 mil or even lower and Star is Born will make much more then they think in the 30-40 mil range. Star is Born has had close to universal positive praise/reviews and Gaga's fanbase seems bigger then tracking would have you believe, whereas I think people seem to be bracing for Venom to be bad. It's more fun to watch horror movies in the cinema with friends. I never watch horror at home.
Some critics say it didn't have a good story or world building but it didn't need to be an Oscar movie to be scary. Critics are too analytical or philosophical. Audience just need to feel it.

Depends on the politics you look at, I guess. If you count stuff like the Purge movies, those are very political. And you do get a lot of horror movies that tackle interesting ideas, though those ones may not be as political, necessarily. Stuff like Get Out dealt with racism, etc.

Searching movie is one of the movies I walked into and was amazed how entertaining it was followed. Simple favour wasn’t that good compared to Searching.
But the gross for these two movies tells us otherwise, but why!??
Please don’t tell me we get to see more of Blake’ and Ana’ skin and nothing in Searching.

both actually have made around the same amount, a simple favour has only made a million more and cos its a more recent release will make more but its not a hammering by any means, also whilst both are sorta in the mystery/thriller genre they are different tonally

I think they made a lot of good points but people always seem to forget the marketing budget for most movies is between 20 to 30 million and isn’t usually included in the production budget. Plus the theaters pretty much split the box office with the production company.
