I still say everyone on Venom should just give most of their profits to Tom Hardy because he is really the only reason that movie was so damn fun. The script sucked, the direction sucked, the CGI sucked; it's all due to the power of Tom Hardy that the movie works at all (and I wasn't even a fan of his until this movie). I didn't think Michelle Williams or Reid Scott was bad, but the way their characters were written really didn't do them any favors. Poor Riz Ahmed and Jenny Slate got the shortest end of the stick. I really hope the studio and whoever the writer/director will be of the sequel learns from this movie and just freaking focus on Eddie and Venom in the next movie. And give Woody Harrelson a better wig.

I was young when it came out, but I do remember that it was widely considered a horror movie when it was released...and therefore when it was nominated and won Oscars, it was a big deal because it was one of the few horror movies to win Oscars. There are a lot of movies that made huge amounts of money before Jaws. Gone with the Wind is still the highest grossing movie of all time and it came out decades before Jaws. What makes Jaws the first blockbuster is the way it was released: everywhere, all at once. Before Jaws movies would slowly roll out throughout the country, Jaws broke that mold.

Cruise's Lestat absolutely steals and makes Interview, the parts he is in are all better than the rest of the film, he gives it some life when it is quite flat (though still good). He's absolutely the Lestat from the first book and not the rest of the first trilogy, though, but that's the fault of Rice's retconning him into not a selfish jerk.

You're discussion about how there are many hugely influential horror franchises that didn't make the top grossing lists reminded me of what you said about Dr.Who, 'There are fans of Dr.Who & there are Dr.Who fans.' I think the same can be said of horror. A lot of people (including myself) enjoy horror but don't enjoy horror films that are geared towards pure horror fans. If a film's horror credentials can be set aside but it still has something great to offer, that's when it tips the scales into the mass market.

The problem with your theory of Ghostbusters is that Ghosbusters DOES work if you dial down the comedy, but falls completely apart if you don't treat the horror seriously.
Extreme Ghostbusters is a great cartoon that cranked the horror waaaaaay up, and wasn't all that funny.
Ghostbusters ATC (the 2016 movie) is a bad movie in large part BECAUSE the horror aspects are treated as a joke.
The reboot's two BIG problems were the wrong style of comedy and failing to take the horror seriously.
The original's dry sharp comedy bounces off the genuine horror & creates magic.
The reboot's slapstick improv just blurs into the wacky cartoon ghost junk & becomes meaningless noise.
Ghostbusters as a horror movie is the difference between life and death for that IP.
It just doesn't work without also being treated as actual horror.
So, while the original Ghostbusters IS driven a bit more by the comedy, the horror is actually the more important part.
Is it on the line? Sure. But Ghostbuster is ABSOLUTELY a horror movie.

I would base my decisions on both CONTENT and INTENT. Evil Dead 2 is an interesting one to break down. It's a horror comedy, but if it had to be slotted into one genre- I would say Comedy. now - if I was putting it in a category video store style I would say horror. That's because the first one is for sure more horror and the packaging is more horror. Based on content and intent I would say it's a comedy!

I really like the 1 on 1 structure. It allows each participant to speak without everyone yelling over top of each other. If I want that, I can watch Fox News :)

The longer this show goes on the more Roth's salty-ness rubs off on Dan ... in the best way ^_^

The Mummy is not a horror movie. The story relies on its adventure, not the scares.

I would genuinely love to see a panel of horror & non-horror film people get together to discuss & define "The Ghostbusters Line". If only so that when a great horror movie comes out like Get Out, Hereditary, IT etc we can get less of those shitty think pieces that claim it's not a horror film it's a insert obscurely titled thriller.

What about The Terminator? Is it action/horror or horror/action?

I would say the Fifth sense was more outside that line that any of the others. Its more of a mystery film. Sure it dealt with ghosts but it wasn't like trying to scare you... or at least if it was I was never scared.

I am pretty horror inclusive but I'd never even consider Ghostbusters as horror.

I still can't watch the video portion of the remake because the images are so unsettling. Never watched the original Ringu...can't bring myself to.

I loved 'What ies Beneath' except for that really unsatisfying ending. In that Bathroom Scene
Fords character should have slipped out injuring his head while Pfeiffers character sowly drowns watching him die...
