Before you call Republic of Macedonia - Vardarska (Vardar), inform yourself what it means! In 1929 Yugoslavia was divided in 9 provinces (banovinas). The division happened with purpose to erase ethnic division and reduce ethnic tension. Which is why every province was named after a topographic feature of the area. For example Vardarska Banovina because of the Vardar river, Moravska Banovina (Serbia) because of Morava river etc... Which is why every province was named after a topographic feature of the area. Between 1929 and 1941 as you can see there was no Macedonia, no Serbia or Croatia, no Bosnia, no Montenegro. But in 1945 every state got their nation’s names back as you can see. To sum up Vardarska Banovina was a name of a province in Yugoslavia and not the name of our country which exists +2500 years before Yugoslavia.

Yes that's true beautiful place besides the people who I must say I found very arrogant and unwilling to help me find my way around compared to the Macedonians in Skopje who I found very loving and caring and always offered help when I was lost. Besides that it's is incomparable to any other European countries I have visited especially lake Ohrid and the monastery and also the castle of King Samuil which was breath taking.

we drove there from paris, long road trip, 4 of us yanks. didn't spend too much time in the capital, really not worth it. the countryside though is amazing. so rich in history, old churches and even older ruins. the people are welcoming, never had a problem. we feel we discovered a gem, a last frontier of sorts. can't say enough. must see. many thanks to the people of macedonia for their kindness. we shall return!
