What is a PC Bang? The Story Behind the East's Gaming Cafés

  • How many times have you left your house to play PC games?
How often have you left the house, where your computer is sitting right there, untouched and pristine, to go play a game on another, publicly available computer, surrounded by other people doing the exact same thing.
PC Bangs and Net Cafes were born in the 90s, and in the West, they didn’t escape the ‘90s - much like Tamagotchis, the Virtual Boy and Devil Sticks.
But PC Bangs are still going strong in South Korea, out-living any number of high-profile ‘90s failures. And not only that, they’re part of the reason why the region is so much better than us at video games.

Since then we have been playing at one of our local pc cafes called Howie's game shack, we would not only play SC2 but overwatch as well. Quality content as always guys.
As a guy who grew up with PC Bangs here in Vietnam, I was surprised that at countries that I visit (quite a few in EU), PC Bangs are nowhere near as popular. I automatically assumed that with the high level of technology and an already developed gaming culture, PC Bangs would be all over the place. However I spent 2 weeks in Germany without finding a single of them.
I did a little research and got a decent answer:
-Compared to the West, console gaming in Vietnam is way behind, because for instance a person in the US could earn about 4-5 times that of a person in Vietnam, but the price for the console and the games stays the same. That means a PlayStation and a few games - which you guys could afford with some savings - are quite a fortune to us.
-However, we can get access to free online games like League, DotA or CS:GO (which actually isn't free but is relatively cheap), and PC Bangs are perfect for after-school games with friends. The connection is better, the PC is stronger and in general, gaming experience there is another level compared to at home. They also serve foods and drinks at a reasonable price and quality, and the hourly price in average is just $0.5.
If anyone remembers the Gigabyte Marines and the Young Generation/Phong Vu Buffalo from the last two League Worlds, yes they were mostly discovered at those pubs and trained to become pros. Our eSports scene is clearly nowhere near Korea's or China's, but we are making steady steps towards the future. Who knows, maybe next year we will get through the group stage..?

Hey could you make a documentary for Slayer's Boxer? He is the first progamer who ever has 'Emperor' title in esports history. Here are the reasons why he is called "The Emperor".
    1. Boxer is the first person who changed people's negative thoughts toward playing a game and finally formalised e-sports pro-scene.
When it'd been only a few years since starcraft released he was on a Korean show as a guest. The show host and other people there made him a joke by calling progamers "addictive" and asking him to give them some cyber money. But he didn't give up and tried to make people know about esports and starcraft. Plus, when he visited the Blue house(like the White house in america) with an invitation from the Korean president he refused to wear a suit but rather put on SKT T1 uniform. It's because he wanted to inform other people of esports on behalf of every progamers.
    2. He is the first star player who mainly contributed to popularising esports in S.Korea. Actually his contribution has made Korea called the home country or the most competitive country in esports.
He was so popular in Korea. It might be more than Faker and other Korean star players. Even the old generations never played or never known of starcraft know Yim Yo-han(Slayer's Boxer). Furthermore, when popularity of starcraft was peak in Korea so there were so much controversials on whether Korea should take esports as other sports, most internationals had no idea what is esports or what is a progamer. (I had some internationals mates in Korea back then and whenever I said about a progamer or esports they were like "you meant programmer? Is that what you said?" Lol but now most people know these meanings. This means his contribution to esports in Korea makes Korea go one-step furthur more than other countries in this field.
From Starcraft to League of Legends there have been many star players like Flash and Faker. When you see Korean starcraft or league of legends pro-league openings you can find that the best player is sat on the chair. The chair refers to a throne for the best player in every year. The owner of the chair has been changed a lot since Korean pro-league begun. Many star players took the seat for a jiffy and had to leave soon. But the title called "Emperor" is given to only one person and that's Slayer's Boxer as Pele, the emperor of football and Michael Jordan, the emperor of basketball.

Do you guys ask each time you source a clip from a different channel/media outlet or do you get blanket permission from the creators? Or is it more of a fair use thing that you credit the clips in the video saying 'courtesy of' and they dont have to give permission? Im just curious because the amount of clips and creators you guys use. Its cool to see how many channels that are people I watch end up in your videos. And as always, amazing job. I'm in love with your content.

So as the home of LOL season 2 Champion TPA, Taiwan. We used to have tons of PC cafe. It's not about the internet coverage. It's all about playing with friends at the same place, like basketball. Esport is like any other kind of sport. People get hyped and more communicative. Discord is great but man... Those were good old days.

I don't know about any other western countries, but Greece is absolutely filled with net cafes, they became especially popular after the economic crysis at 2k11. In my city (Salonika) which is roughly 1 million people i can safely say there are 30-40 known net cafes swarmed with people.

@A$AP I don;'t know what the standards are in these countries, but i can say i'm pretty satisfied when i can pay like 5 euros for 3-4 hours and game on a PC with RTX 2080 and i7-8700k. Internet connections are solid in these places too (200 mbps) , unlike internet connections we get in our homes (50 mbps max).

As a korean, here's why we got so many net cafes aroumd east but not in west side.
Simple cultural reason. Eastern people prioritized bonds with family and friends because of saying of the old chinese dudes back in B.C.
So as you know, we only study till death. But think what happend when internet and pc started to show up.
We needed to have our own break time with our school mates away from our family's shits.
And that was the start of what we call 'pc bang boom' now.

At my country, Spain which is probably the most avanced European country relating to e-sports leagues and culture, we have a couple of PC Bangs per city and we have a chain of PC Bangs called Elite. I do attend a couple of this sites per month at my local city (Zaragoza), one is the typical PC Bangs which has survived from the 90s era and the other is a more modern PC Bang and I agree with that PC Bangs are social centres, I tens to go with a couple of friends and spend all the afternoon playing with them and it's not the same as playing at home due to them being physically with you. Also, my Internet at home is shit
