Yes to all of these things!!!! The shock that people get when I tell them we don’t own a tv😂 Some people say it’s “unrealistic” to raise a child without a tv and no one can actually spend that much time with their children. But I look at my one year old and I’ve never been happier with her and my husband! She is the happiest baby and we are so close, I love playing with her and she loves cooking and cleaning with me!
Wow this is so lovely! So precious ❤️ I wish I had tuned in to this lifestyle when my kids were even younger. I had no access to the internet then and I didn’t know about anything other than mainstream lifestyle. But I have been doing my best to simplify and redirect my life and my home back towards my true values. We only have Netflix at home but I would love to live without a tv. Sometimes I unplug it and take it away for a few weeks, I guess that’s better than nothing! You sound like you are having such a happy loving wonderful life , every blessing to you ❤️
Yes! We already do all these things and actually got rid of our TV about 2 months ago. It was the BEST decision we ever made. It’s life changing and you see the whole world differently.
Agreed. I went without a TV for a while, and now that I have one again it's for movie night and occasionally video games when socialising. Although documentaries and podcasts on the laptop are still an enjoyable distraction, for better and worse.
Yes! I have 8 kids, we homeschool, and so many people can't believe that our kids don't watch TV, play video games, have cell phones, or even get on the computer. We do have once a week family movie nights together, but we do so many outdoor activities, and we have a small farm. My kids use their imagination and are so close to each other. It's nice to have so much time to spend together!
We got rid of our TV as well and opted for a projector, so that when we do watch something together, it feels more special and also you're not "tempted" to binge watching...🤗
I'm so glad you're passionate about homeschooling! We lived in an old neighborhood when my kids were going up. They played outside, in every season, We spent all day at the library. I wanted them to love learning! And reading! My daughter would bring home a stack of books and I wouldn't see her until dinner. In the 90's everyone was so concerned about socializing. Lol I would be stop in the store and ask my my children weren't in school. One now is a professor of nursing with a masters degree, she also is neuroscience manager in a hospital, she started college at 16. My son has a computer science and engineering degree. He didn't find his passion until a little later. Why is there set rules or timetables? Let kids learn how and what they're interested in. Then they'll love it! Whatever you do, don't worry if you're doing enough. I love being a minimalist! Why spend time cleaning a trinket when you could be at the beach?
Mom of 3 boys. We haven’t owned a tv for 8 years! Our neighbors think it’s the coolest thing that our kids are always running around using their imaginations outdoors. We call them 90’s kids living in 2023. 😂 I am a minimalist but I am also starting to try and implement slow living into our home. I think I’ve watched nearly every video of yours at this point. You truly inspiring my girl! Thank you Thank you!
As a small TH-camr with a full-time job, who also plans to homeschool, I need all the slow living tips I can get! I LOVE that you share the message of slow living WITH kids. There are many channels on this topic, but you’re the first I’ve come across that has children. Subbed! 😊
My husband and I got rid of all our social media a few years ago. And we no longer have WiFi, just our phone services. And it really has let out unnecessary stress and freed up so much wasted time on social media.
Hi! Can you make a video (or point me to it) about how to handle the daily/weekly chores when you're out and about a bunch with the kids? My kids LOVE playing outside and i support that. But then i feel like I'm constantly behind on dishes/laundry/cleaning etc. Thank you!
Obsessed with your vids!! Stumbled across your content 2 days ago. Since then I’ve done 14 hrs of decluttering. Done a huge toy sort for my 3 y/o. Swapped out some of her plastic toys for better textures like pottery in the play kitchen and a shell sensory container. Repotted a plant and rooted it’s off cuts and replaced my plastic plant inside with real cuttings. Had a bath, sat in the sun, burned a foot of paperwork. Feel so much mentally lighter. ❤ Video idea: favourite books
I feel like it was so much easier to live a slow life when my kids were younger. Now I have to work from home and they're older. We still homeschool and they all want to be involved in activities like sports and theatre and co-op. It ends up being SO much running around it's just a season of life but it's definitely harder to live life at a slow pace right now.
I love all of these! I am trying to live a slower life with my kids! Thank you for sharing! I read a book and had to stop, it was so discouraging, saying we had to do more as moms! 🤦♀️
We have no TV the last 5 and a half years (my girl is 7 and my boy 11) They do watch cartoons sometimes on one computer that we own. No tablets, no phones, no Xbox etc. Yes, you become a busier mum but you spend more time outdoors and children's performance at school is great too. No regrets at all. ☺️
Good day to you. I hope I am not disturbing. I rarely comment on anything, or anyone, but lately, I have been a bit more brave, and started to reach out to others. I just wanted to tell you that you remind me, so much, of myself. I am probably a dozen years, or more, older than you, but, your philosophy on life, your minimalist ways, your child rearing techniques, and your hilarious sense of humor, is like going back in time for me, and looking in a mirror. I am far from perfect, but, I must tell you, a bit boastfully, haha, that my children, as well as my husband, are as close to perfect as you can get, and, I think that is from not only homeschooling, and cherishing every day, learning, creating, living, and loving, but also connecting to each other, free from so much of what “bogs” down most of us. You and your family seem the same as mine. My husband and I have always put strength in living in the moment, and keeping out the superficial and harsh aspects of what life could be. Our children have embraced what my husband and I held most dear, which is doing things, creating things, living in the here and now. My oldest is 25, and he learned at home, focusing on his passions, and now, he is a photographer and blues guitarist. My daughter, 23, is a fine artist, painting, as well as doing digital art, as, she was free to be who she was meant to be. Our middle son, who is 18, is a musician, with a passion and a drive that is unbeatable. He is on his senior year, and is interning at a music production studio. Yes, he is driven, but, he is also such a sweet and giving soul, and told us he would love to live with us forever. Haha. And, lastly, my youngest son, has such support from his loving family, that he feels the need to end his high school years, in another country. He is my analytical guy, my computer scientist, who feels he can do good, in a foreign school, learning from others, just like him. I only tell you these things, as a way to tell you, that you are living a most beautiful life, and, your family looks happier, and more “put together” than more traditional families. I think you are doing a beautiful job. Keep doing what you are doing. What a beautiful life you have.
@@MadisunGray You are most welcome! Again, I rarely come out of my shell, and when I do, I usually sing what I have to say, and post it, and have two people watch it. Haha. Hence, the name, Musical Emily. But, I made myself come out, because I felt it important enough to tell you that what you are doing, how you are living, what you are teaching your precious children, as well as yourself and your husband, is so beneficial, so healthy, and so pure. You are doing a wonderful job. I wish you and your family all the best. Take care. As a side note, please excuse any grammar or spelling errors in my writing, as, I am really nervous, and keep making mistakes. Haha. Best wishes to you!
I agree and love your Chanel. But for me there is a big question, I live in Switzerland and here we are trained waking up early (too early don’t like it after 40 years lol). But my point is public school is preparing our kids to life that seems ok for most… so it seems important to be realistic about the society where they live. But I think it’s very cultural too… exciting questions. But hard to apply for all the tips.. keep watching you and learn more from you experience!
I’m due on august 12th 2023 which is 3 days from now and I hope I learn how to navigate my aspirations as far career goes, work life, and being a new mom. I get depressed thinking about how demanding life is and how I’ll spend lots of time away from my Son in order to make money and move up in life. I really want to Be present in all of his important moments.
I LOVE slow living with my kids even today with them being teens. Staying at home with them was not easy but it was what was best. Homeschooling was fun until covid when all the co-ops we went to shut down, other than the music lessons they took (which went virtual for a while). I love spending time in nature with my boys. I look forward to homeschooling the baby in my womb (and hopefully will have another child for him to grow up with like my two older boys have had in one another). We haven't had TV channels ever. . .even when we got married nearly 19 years ago. We do have netflix, but it is interesting how little my sons even want to watch movies. I grew up a movie fanatic and enjoy watching them still. My favorite thing to do with my sons has been going to the lake multiple times a week in the summertime. I don't know if I want to do that with an infant this summer (baby due in early June), but my mom and mother-in-law is going to take them to the lake still. I hope I can go on lots of walks with them. I don't do well in the cold so I am inside the whole time in our little place when it is cold. It is difficult to find things to do. I used to just read to my sons for hours and hours. I read A Christmas Carol to them over the winter. They still like being read to. hehe.
Do you unschool? I have a 5 and 4 year old and an unschooling them. I’ve read most of the books you’ve listed and they led us where we are now and we absolutely love it.
Totally awesome that you unschool! We plan to unschooled well! I feel like it gives the kids opportunity to shine in their true gifts/talents/interests! I'm also a fan of Waldorf school!
Hi I’m loving your Chanel ! I am wanting to make a switch to this style of lifestyle and was curious how do you handle switching from tons of toys and target runs to getting rid of all the plastic toys and when at target and they see toys?
I'm just another mom with these same values and I have started my girl out on more wood/Montessori and Waldorf toys but I'd say you can do it the same way you can with detoxing your home from bad ingredients. You don't have to go cold turkey. You can start by getting rid of the items your kids don't play with much and selling or donating them on marketplace. If you do sell them then you can use that money to replace them with longer lasting more educational toys or books. Then you can also teach your kids about giving and let them choose 5-10+ toys they want to donate to a child in need. For birthdays and Christmas you can ask friends and family to donate to experiences like a trip to the aquarium or a play or a new bike or something your child can use outdoors. For our daughters first birthday we are going to buy bicycles and a bike trailer so she can enjoy the outdoors with us. We've got some amazing bike trails where we live and we want her to get outside more because its so good for kids and she love nature. If the kids see the toys at the store you just need to remind them that they have toys at home and that you guys are helping save the planet or something. It might be a learning curve for them to wean from the want to consume new things but if you can show them the value in a fun way it could be easier. Let them know they are helping by not always getting new toys. I think teaching them self control in a world that tries to get us to buy everything is super important.
I would add to try to cut down on the target shopping trips--the fewer toys they see on shelves, the less they'll ask for them! this is most important when kids are really young, like under age 6, and have that inborn need for novelty. Once they get a little older, it's easier to talk to them rationally and teach them about saving money for the things they really want!
Hello! You mentioned allowing your kids to watch shows on your laptop. Do you own a TV? I honestly would like to pack mine up and put it in a box for a year and see what happens.
