  • Modern life and technology have given us this ability to stack and pack more into our lives than we can physically handle and I think what feels even worse than that is that all of this distraction and busyness keeps us from doing the things that are meaningful. I think especially as women a lot of us are really stuck in survival mode and the worst part is that it can be kind of a paradox where you're stuck and you don't know how to get out even though sometimes ending survival mode is a lot simpler than it sounds.

YAAAAS! But I think what really took it to the next level was my mindset shift. I wasn’t just trying to get rid of things I didn’t want or need. I was determined to trust that I could live well (thrive) with less! But the tangibility of decluttering brought that new mindset into reality.

I would say I’m in the middle of exiting survival mode. :) Thanks to decluttering. it’s a huge process, we have so much stuff. But I realized *I* don’t want it. It was fear that held onto stuff, not me. That was a powerful realization. Having less stuff absolutely makes you feel better. My goal is to clean less and ironically right now I’m “cleaning” way more right now to be able to clean less. But that consists of tons of decluttering and organizing, not actual cleaning

I just want to tell you how refreshing it is to hear you talk about your faith. I love Jesus too and following his example of being unhurried and simple has been of great help to me. Unfortunate circumstances led me to have to be both mom and dad to my three son’s from the time they were 8 (twins) and 13. I had to be the home maker and the breadwinner. Women are not meant to do the role of the woman and the man. We can’t and we shouldn’t be held to that expectation. I think this is a problem in our society. Great video Madi.

Also, you don't have to toss them! ❤ You can always repurpose them to be rags for cleaning and other useful things so they don't go to waste! That's what I'm doing now. People back then were really great about making use out of everything until it literally wasn't possible to reuse for a different purpose. Saves sooo much money in the long run! 🎉😊

its really easy to just identify with the men in the stories, and I totally do that too because of the cultural difference for men and women at that time but I agree it really is powerful to consider how out of the way God goes to love and meet the women of the Bible.

Hey, thanks for this. I have seen a little bit of your content before and have enjoyed it. I am very much on a decluttering journey after raising 3 kids. (!!!) 2 are still at home working on launching but are adults and this place is chaos. Anyway, I wanted to say, though I do not share the same faith as you, you have a nice manner of speaking about yours that recommends it so much more than I sometimes see. It can be easy to forget there are Christians out there who are actually striving to be good people when the loudest voices tend to be the hateful ones. Thank you for adding your soft voice to the mix.

Wow. This was great. I felt so convicted by step 1 that my jaw literally dropped. 😂
I've suspected this to be true, but your explanation helped put the logic (or lack thereof) into words. Thank you for this!
And your theory on holding onto things "just in case"! How it's really just saying "I believe I will have regrets in the future. I can't trust myself. I am the kind of person who will have regrets." I mean WOW. Eye-opening.
So so good to hear this right now. Was literally just having a randomly super anxious day, prayed about it, came to TH-cam for a distraction and this video was on my home page. ❤ No distraction necessary now!
And you're so right, doing something good for myself in those anxious moments feels so wrong when you're listening to the lies your mind is telling you. "You're a failure. You don't deserve to be treated to something nice. Why would you need a break right now? What have you accomplished today to earn that?" UGH. But as you said, those are all related to scarcity and survival. Like "there's no time to shave my legs or give myself a pedicure! I've already lost so much time curled up in a ball today!", and I am not experiencing a crisis in my life, so I don't need to treat life that way. I am allowed to enjoy my life! It is safe enough to relax and smile!
Last thing I swear. The author of "The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry" has a great one-season podcast with another Christian author called "Fight Hustle End Hurry" with some life-changing lessons in there! I like to give it a re-listen once or twice a year.

    Love your videos.
I’ve purged an entire apartment and clothing! The difference when I wear natural fibers is amazing. I bought a pair of merino wool pajamas, I just air them out in the morning and can wear them for a week between washes since they are self cleaning. During the day I wear a cashmere sweat suit. I also wash once a week. I looove dresses but find that the styles I like are polyester so I purchased some patterns and plan to sew my copies of my favorite dresses with merino or organic cotton fabrics.
I got rid of all of my plastic yoga leggings and plastic Rothy’s shoes.
Whne I wear my natural fibers I feel cozy and comfy.

I've yoyo'd with minimalism for most of my life. I just want to get off the hamster wheel lately. I've loved Jennifer Scott's 10 item wardrobe for a decade now but I keep stuff "just in case" because I've moved 20x in the past 10 years. I've had to get rid of everything so many times and it didn't always feel like it was my choice. Lord willing, I'm done moving around so I'm letting go of the coping mechanism of holding on to stuff for comfort and having familiar things around for that same reason. My family has always been minimal and lived in small spaces but I know we have too much for us right now. It's totally related to my mindset of survival mode, thanks so much for this video! 🤗✨🌴🌅🌺

I decluttered alot, got plants, going to start recycling, thinking I can handle more kids soon, less tv, trying to cook more eat out less, etc but now extra depressed because idk balance its always 0 or 100. So since I don't look like you (short hair, lots of tattoos from past) or can't match cause we cant/don't want to go too natural and slow as yall that I feel like I don't fit into "crunchy" life and "slow living" and feel like giving up and resorting back to old ways. So overwhelmed that even feeling like quitting college and back to struggling to connect with my toddler. Missing my pug we once had, yours is so cute and calm. I'm not exactly religious as well. I'm a sahm and won't be working for a few years but probably plan on elementary and working when older. I'm on medication for my diagnoses that I need rn. I'm very encouraged and inspired that you're here and are getting value from my videos- never feel like you have to look like me or do all the same things I do, just want to inspire you to be the truest version of YOU. xo

Hope you don’t mind me commenting. I’m a bit like you. I don’t seem to fit either! I’m all or nothing too, but am trying to change that because it’s sets me up to fail. I decided to try and make changes one at a time. I realised I could give my all to one thing at a time and not everything all at once. If that makes sense! Once I’ve established this new way, I move on to the next. I think the sooner we accept we’re all a bit different and no one size fits all we will be happier. I’ve realised it’s about finding what works and is perfect for me. Not trying to fit the mould of what we deem to be perfect. I wish you happiness.😊

Also so funny that you brought up the 10 item wardrobe again because at the beginning I was thinking if you ever get time I’d love to see yet another one of those (and/or for the kids now that they’re older - cuz I need the inspo and motivation so bad for my kids closet hahaha!) … in all your spare time 😂…. Thanks for all the time and thought put into this! Every one gives me a little bit more courage to live a little slower/simpler even as a well seasoned mama. Much love to you and the fam! ❤

I really related to you talking about living in fear. Man this is were I am everyday and it robs me of so many beautiful moments. My fear effects all my actions. I loved that you talked about God coming to visit women in our everyday simple tasks. It gives me hope to change, and live a more peaceful and present life.

I used to be a minor prepper. It was expensive, even with the little I would have prepped. It was constant worrying...do I have enough? Is it going to last? When does it expire? And then my family, opening things when other things were already open. UGH!!!!! We survived 2020 on very little. In fact, I emptied each room during that time, painted and decluttered about 30% of each room. I have about 40 items in my wardrobe, but I work FT, and I also do photography, hiking, yoga and I volunteer at the animal shelter. I do have to have a few things for each but it's not excessive and often, it over laps. Right now, I am getting set to move out of this house and into around 700 square feet. I have emptied 2 rooms and I am using the rest of the rooms to figure out how to utilized what I have in 700 square feet. More to purge but it's fun and it's freeeeeeeinnnnngggggg!

I used water and vinegar to clean my kitchen today and threw away the bleach. Just nervous cause we cook meat most days. Do I mop with just vinegar and dish soap? Do yiu still recommend Dr bronners? You mentioned a brand but it's too pricey for me to justify 😅😂 Wanting to try to make small and safer changes but I threw my old dish soap and dishwasher pods away and don't know what to get now haha Seventh generation? Thank you!! You bring so much light to my days and I'm not a perfect match but I can tell I'm going the right direction. I also paused college so I can focus on me and my family rn after seeing your videos of decluttering the load and taking summers off. I have bigger priorities rn I can now see better

Letting out emotions... one of my favourite ways if I'm very pissed is.... ripping up a cardboard box. or three. Seriously, the sound of the ripping and the phsyical aspect of destroying something into as tiny/big pieces as you want, with or without making vocal sounds is a spiritual practice everyone should know about.

Took me an age! Wow is it difficult?!😮 I started off with so many items. Hundreds. It was the hardest part of declutterring I found….but the most rewarding. I’m now down to fifteen autumn/winter items, but could actually let some more go being truthful. I had major anxiety for weeks after each bag of stuff went. It was only as I finished and a couple of weeks passed that that constant nagging feeling of unease of letting stuff go went. Then I felt like a weight had been lifted. I now absolutely love what I’ve done. I’ve even just sorted a spring/summer wardrobe already! Twelve items of clothing. You are doing really well to keep on. The feeling when you get there is so worth it. Enjoy! 😊

My favorite thing she mentioned was the setting in which God met women verses how he met men in the Bible. He does have a tenderness in how he reaches out to us. You can expect him in the ordinary: at a table, waking up, moping the floor, folding the laundry, driving home. We don’t need to go far. He is just looking at the heart. He said, seek me with all of your heart and you will find me. Sometimes, all the strength we have to give is opening our eyes and keeping them open to wake up, and making the effort to pray. Like meeting us with breakfast in bed, he meets us there. We may not even know what to say, but he understands our heart turned to him. He understands speaking in tongues and it is said to strengthen us.

My other favorite thing she said as that, as women, we live hurried lives. It is such a freedom to hear that shouldn’t be the case and that Jesus was never in a hurry. How can you love, if you are hurried? Having less on the schedule and less stuff to care for would help with that, but I think the take away is,” be focused on loving people, not focused on helping them necessarily be done in the quicker amount of time. Savor people God has given in my
life. Yes, don’t be a sloth, but stop long enough to really appreciate and hear people.” It’s about people, not the goal.

I wear it to all the funerals and weddings I go to. I am sure people have noticed, but no one has said anything yet. It is simple and lovely and has lasted me several years now.
