Inside John Derian’s Enchanting Seaside Home in Cape Cod | Design Notes

- John Derian welcomes us into his magical ‘old world’ house in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It was a rainy day in Provincetown, Massachusetts, when the designer John Derian first saw what would eventually become his house, an 18th-century Greek Revival number in the centre of town.
Built in 1789 for a sea captain who could keep on eye on happenings at sea from the front windows, the house was then extended backwards in the 19th century, which has now been transformed into a small shop for John's dreamy homewares. As a result of this evolutionary process, there are plenty of attractive quirks to the architecture and decoration, from the faded 20th-century wallpapers to the seashell and horsehair plasterwork. Watch the full episode of ‘Design Notes’ as we tour John Derian’s seaside sanctuary.

Finally! Someone who is confident enough to live with beautiful history!
You make an excellent point!!
When the video started, I thought they were showing us the “before” photos and I got tears in my eyes that anyone would get rid of it. By the end I was crying tears of joy.
Your house is my idea of a dream house. Thanks for keeping it just the way it is.
Most of us would have fixed it up, but I respect his decision not to and it's charming. He really is the King of Decoupage! I love his work.
I think he did fix up major parts of it - like the '70s bathroom he mentioned.
What a kind, thoughtful and creative man. It is inspiring when a home is the direct reflection of its owner/tenant.
Beautiful house and respective owner. It's lovely to see people thrive in their element. He clearly loves and respects his home.
John Derian’s shop in NYC is as amazing as this house, he is totally authentic, and has created his own beautiful world, which is the most difficult thing to do. Thank you for the tour….
I love Provincetown and have visited John Derian’s shop several times without realizing that he lives in the building. It feels like a lovely little sanctuary for odd and beautiful objects you’ll never see anywhere else. How marvelous that he and the house found each other. He honors its history and treats it with such respect and gratitude. Thanks for this glimpse of his home and the sources of his inspiration.
His Christmas shop in NYC is amazing!
I’ve never loved a house more than this one. I watch at least 2 home tours a day, adding up to thousands I’m sure! This is so utterly charming.
hands down this is one of the most gorgeous homes I have ever seen ..............a testament to the owner and owners past .....perfection
I wish we had more of this type of care for the old houses, it’s so authentic & beautiful.
👏 Bravo for not murdering this home's history and character. ❤ The wallpaper fragments are an evolving work of art - time ticking to appreciation in a functional building. 👍from 🇬🇧
Simply outstanding that he's been able to maintain the integrity of that home. Good for him.
I absolutely love that he didn’t do any major renovations!! So many beautiful historic homes in this country are being renovated, and they often lose the things that make them unique in the process. I have so much respect for anyone that recognizes the beauty in old homes and chooses to preserve them even if that means foregoing some modern conveniences.
Best home tour by far. Exceptional taste of homeowner
John Derian is very interesting, his home reflects who he truly is…beautiful. He’s a collector and it definitely shows.
I love this one especially, it feels like a proper lived in home and one that isn't afraid of it looking old and wonderfu
Just beautiful. Thank you so much for inviting us in. ❤
I wouldn’t change a thing.
Loved his atheistic. So glad he kept the originality of the home.
@user-zk5rt3gb3e Thank you, Karen
Maybe he’s an atheist
Great vacation house. Perfectly imperfect.
It is so sweet that he actually thanks his house whenever he leaves it.
Love John Derian. He matches well to his home.
What a treat. Very welcoming, calm. I am a fan of decoupage, especially his. A home that maintained the charm of decades and was ready for him to work his magic.
There is something very heartening about leaving an old home as is. Most of us can't do it, but this talented gentleman has done it really well! Thank you for this lovely tour! ❤
John Derian just has the magic touch for a home like this.
I would want to paint and update a little more but then I don't have his magic touch.
Lovely.
What a stunning house. I am so pleased that you have kept everything. It speaks history and I imagine that you can sit and imagine so many events in the house. Utterly beautiful.
Wow what a magical home
The most charming house I have ever seen!! this is what real talent gets you!!
A dreamy home even without costly renovations! If I lived even remotely nearby I would be John's customer to his shop and I would beg him to have a small glimpse of his home.
Best house …..integrity and nuance and so very personal
I've seen this house many times and I just adore it.
What a charming man and a charming house
I love this so so so much! Thank you DESIGN NOTES!!!
The house is magical no doubt and this guy was clearly meant for the house. The fact that he didn't renovate or really update the home speaks volumes. Nice to see someone who loves and respects his home.
I always knew that John Derian would be a fascinating person, because his work is so very fascinating!!
Absolutely charming. This makes my heart go pitter patter.
I could watch it over and over again. Thank you..⛵️🐚 Just beautiful...🌊 beautifully decorated with all the seaside ocean 🐚decorations and pretty creamy white furniture....🌊 I love old houses
Charming nostalgic whimsical person and house. Thank you for sharing! 😊
I have always loved this house in Provincetown and wondered what it was like inside. Thank you for showing the interior. It is fantastic.
I love your world. Thank you for sharing!
This was my absolute favorite house - ever! Perfect 🩷🐚🧡🏡.
I could not spend more than 10-minutes in that home, but am very glad to know that its owner enjoys it just as it is.
ABSOLUTELY STUNNING❤
One word ...........charming
This is really lovely. It shows he has a deeper love and connection to his home, treating its flaws and characteristics as human.
Always nice to see Mr. Derian.
A lovely home. It's everything I see when visiting his shops in the East Village, NYC. I even did a quick video of it around Halloween time. So much charm and personality.
John has fully embraced this house just as it is and in doing so has kept the history in such a unique way - fascinating ❤❤❤
Perfect in its wabi-sabi-ness! Love, love, love.
it's beautiful. total respect for him and his good taste.
This is pure beauty
I somehow found John's work and this amazing home years ago, and it was such a pleasure to watch this video and see it featured on one of my favorite magazine's youtube channel! This house is a treasure, and I'm glad you are preserving this history and showing us how incredibly gorgeous age can be.
Oh my... what a stunning story! I'm really glad that John kept the house's old style... it's so full of "spirit", it seems to have it's own personality, with a true lifetime story. I really loved the video!
This house is everything. Lived in and loved, what more do you need.
Match made in ..paradise! This house, and John's collection and taste, were destined to be together.
Those soft furnishings!
I have friends who live down the street from you. I’ve been to your shop many times. It’s always been one of my favorite homes on Commercial Street !
Whimsical and charming. It’s simply beautiful!
OOOOOOOOOOOOOh! This past Saturday in Provincetown, I saw the shop sign and was I drawn to it but also so confused, but I kept looking at the sign for some reason, trying to understand, perhaps was it an interior design business or a shop. And now I see the same shop sign this video! Such a missed treasure! Will visit next time!
When I die and 'go to heaven' this is what it will feel like. Thanks for the preview!
Lovely house. Thank you for the video
Really, … good for you. So lovely. So Cape-ie too. ❤ I love where we live! thank you to your house and you.
One of the most enjoyable episodes and nicest houses featured in your channel to me personally. Thank you
How wonderful to find a spot to enjoy and hang out where you grew up. A lovely place to think on old memories and create new.
Wow! Truly beautiful, the VW is the cherry on top 😍
I love the history in this home.
Love that you are embracing its age. Sally Quinn took the same approach with Grey Gardens. I do the same with my 1890 Queen Anne. Regards from Indiana!
I love John Derian's aesthetic and I treasure his books.
That's how I've always wanted to live. John has done a good deed by that house it's just magnificent.
Perfection! Thank you for sharing your home ~ truly inspiring! 😍👏🏻
Beautiful film H&G.
wow incredible place yet again
I love the old and chippiness of it all......so comfy and cozy.
I love and talk to my house too. When ever I was away it would call out for me - and I’d send it reiki too, which I know has healed some of its wounds ❤️
I love John. I think he is just fabulous. He inspires me to do what I want.
Perfectly imperfect! Love it.
💜💜💜 👌🏻House & Garden always shows the best houses wish it was showing for longer not just seven minutes 😏
Utterly charming, I could spend hours looking at all the incredible detail. Thank you for showing us around 😊
Well, that is unusual…in a good way! That house must love you, John Derian!
Isn't it amazing how each home has different stories to tell? 😍
So beautiful! Always so happy to see a video from you guys, they are so thoughtfully made
What a wonderful home ..
I love this. Just cool to see someone keeping the history of the interior.
Greetings from Amsterdam finally I see someone with the same taste for decorating ❤️❤️❤️✋
So beautiful, what a different aspect, allowing a house to reflect its history. We usually love to change things and yet this home was waiting for you. It has a creepy feel, kind of making you look into the past. 😊
Lovely tour!
Third owner?! How wonderful! The house did find him…he’s perfect to take care of it…love the house and that round island…
What a beautiful story.
The wallpapers are, indeed, beautiful! Never took them down, at this point, they’re historic as the house itself.
I love this H&G. I wish that they make a video once a week!😔
Absolutely honestly I have never seen a house or interiors I love more. It's my heart's house. I'm embarking on a new design for a tiny urban apt, but this video is going to be my aesthetic goal anyway.
My favorite so far! I would have done the same thing to a resting home. Beautiful and inspiring!
I want to visit his shop….he is so stinking cool….Thankyou for sharing your home with us…hugs carolyn from Columbus Georgia
❤Thank you x this is one of my favourite houses shown on this channel x
Why did this home tour make me emotional?! Stunning house that made me feel a little envious of his friends that get to hang out there in those rooms and with its owner. 🐚🦞❤
Entrancing is the perfect description. Plus the Target Mushroom pillow sighting!
I admire the courage it took to leave the original patina intact. So beautiful.
Love love love these videos, more please!
What a super cool house and interior. I love everything about it. On another note, The house was built in 1789, George Washington took his oath of office as the first President of the United States. Amazing!
Great space. Love the well worn fabrics and colors. Thanks for the tour.
I do not know this man but I love him so much
This seems so comfortable! I love the wallpaper fragments, especially the blue; I love the verdure pattern so much.
Beautiful house!!! I love it
