    I damaged the spindle lock gear in the same way on my Turncrafter. Thank you for showing how you repaired yours. I love this lathe and was really peeved at myself for damaging it.

    Great video! I found it because I need to change my indexing gear on this same model lathe. All the teeth are damaged from using it to lock the spindle for removing the chuck. I was using the rubber band wrenches to try to remove the chuck with mix results. Finally I took off the spindle hand wheel and drilled a hole in the rim to fit the knockout bar and can now use that as a lever and the chuck key on the chuck, pushing in opposite directions. Works great!

      Bruce Metzdorf hi, glad you liked the video. I have not needed to replace the gear since this video. Good idea drilling the hole. I was thinking of bringing the plastic gear to a metal shop and having them make a steel one. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it my friend. Take care.

    I have a very similar lathe to this one. The spindle lock knob lifts up and gets turned to change from lock and unlock. The problem I have is that for some reason the knob (maybe pin inside) doesn't go down all the way. Almost as if the pin is maybe missing a hole in which it should go dowm, Any ideas what the problem might be? Any way to get the knob off to get to the spring and locking mechanism?

      Hi Philip, thanks for commenting. If you lathe is like the one in the video, the pin is most likely getting hung-up on the gear inside. The pin goes in between the gear teeth inside. I would check this out to see if the gear is aligned so that the pin can drop in between the gear teeth. It could also be that the teeth on the gear are all broken off. Psi sells a replacement gear that is metal rather than the original plastic one. Hope that helps, thanks for watching.

    Stew came across your video love it. Question when looking down spindle shaft should it be straight or the inner hole off ? I also have a psi commander love it just seems to be running ruff when turning pens

    • @spwoodart
      @spwoodart  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I would say the the inner hole of the shaft should be straight. It could cause balancing issues and vibration. If it’s under 3 years, it should be under warranty. PSI would send you a new head spindle. I would also check your bar for the pen mandrel to insure it’s not bent. Thanks for watching and hope that helps.

    Great job! I have to admit, I'm not very good at keeping up with regular maintenance, but when I do, it really does make a huge difference. I really appreciate that you went into as much detail as you did. (this has been a good reminder to me that I have to grease my bearings soon... like, today!) lol :)
    Cheers!

      Thank you Jerry, I appreciate it. I still think about looking at the camera lens all the time during filming since you gave me that tip. I'm glad the video will help. I try and maintenance my lathe all the time, I feel It makes a big difference in turning, but I know what you mean, mine was over due as well; plus, I really needed to fix the spindle lock. Thanks for watching my friend.

      I've noticed the change. :) Now I feel like you are talking directly to me, rather than to some invisible interviewer. hahaha :D Great stuff! Keep up the good work, and keep the videos coming my friend! Happy turning!

      +Jerry Paul thank you. I'm always trying to improve my videos, so any of your feed back is helpful. I appreciate it. Oh, by the way, I really liked your crab apple bud vase. I've always wanted to try crab apple. I had a crab apple tree in my back yard growing up. Cheers!

      Thanks Spyros! I'm glad to help if I can. :)
      It is a beautiful wood to turn, but it warps and twists quite a lot. You can expect cracking too, but in my opinion, the rich grain makes up for any so-called 'flaw'. It smells good when you turn it too.

    Just discovered your channel.
    Good video - I have the 12" Turncrafter and have also discovered that those teeth aren't really to be a spindle lock. Haven't tried to repair it yet - but at least I can see from your example that it's possible.

      Hi, thanks for watching. It's a nice little lathe but the plastic teeth kind-of-stink. Though, I've gotten use to not using it as a chuck lock. Live and learn. Lol. Cheers!

    Thanks so much for your video. I also had all the teeth break off the gear on my lathe. It probably shouldn't be used as a spindle lock, though the instructions do call it that (as well as an indexing knob). I think I will look for a metal gear to replace it. Do you know if PSI sells metal replacements, or just the plastic ones?

    • @spwoodart
      @spwoodart  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      William Weiler Hi, I feel your pain my friend. However, you are in luck, PSI does make a metal gear now. I put one on my lathe and it’s so much better, no more broken teeth. Just give them a call. Thanks for watching.

    How do you recommend getting the chuck off when it is stuck? I have already broken several teeth and the chuck won't budge. Thank you.

    • @spwoodart
      @spwoodart  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patti TIchenor hi, great question. I feel your pain. I have two ways I use to loosen a stuck chuck. 1: I use two rubber strap clamps (like the ones to remove oil filters) and I put one around the chuck and the other one around the hand wheel crank. Then I push one and pull the other. 2: The other way is to use a vise grip. I put cloth over the spindle index ring and over the lathe bed so I don't scratch the lathe bed or spindle. I then clamp the vise around the spindle (index ring on my lathe). I turn the chuck hard and let the vise grip handle stop on the lathe bed. Hope that helps.

      @@spwoodart I know this is really old, but after scouring the internet for a week, and spending a couple hours on the phone with PSI, the vice grip solution finally worked. I litterally broke all the teeth of the gear trying to use the spindle lock at the direction of PSI to remove the default faceplate that was really stuck on there. Thanks!

      joshua stark Hi Joshua, I have another video on removing a stick chuck. Check it out. Hope you got it off? It’s a good idea to replace the plastic teeth great for a metal one, PSI has them.

    Great Video! I have the same lathe and have the same problem with the spindle lock gear. I am have a difficult time finding where to buy a replacement online. Would you happen to have a link to the gear or contact information for whom I need to contact for a replacement? Thank you in advance.

    • @spwoodart
      @spwoodart  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bob Perrone hey, thank you. You should watch my latest video, I change the gear to a metal one. You can get a replacement gear at Pen State Industries. Phone: 1 (800) 377-7297. You can order the parts online you have to call and talk with the tech parts department and they will give you the part number, then you can buy it over the phone from them. Opt for the steel gear, it's about $12 plus shipping. Thanks for watching.

    Hello How do you change your Belt speed? By taking the hand wheel off?
    I just purchased one and find that taking the hand wheel off every time is a pain.
    Do you have a easier way?Thanks For the video. Anthony

      Anthony Maida Hi Anthony, I don’t change my belt on my lathe. I modified my lathe to run on one belt setting. My lathe goes from 500 to 4000 without a belt change. Watch my other video on lathe repair, I show how I make the modification. Thanks for watching.

    actually the bearings of your lathe are sealed for life , what youve done with adding grease is to turning it to a dust colectors!!! συγνωμη πατριωτη αλλα επρεπε να στο πω!!!

    • @spwoodart
      @spwoodart  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Harris Dendromiris hey thanks for watching and don't be sorry, it's a good tip. However, it's not intirely accurate. If you don't lubricate your sealed bearings they will dry out from the heat, eventually. By using the right grease for your bearing, it will prolong its life. I notice a major difference and I have never had an issue with dust on the bearings. I put a thin layer on both side forcing the grease the best I can into the seals. You can also take the seals off or soak them warm grease. I've hear of some using vacuum pots as well. Using the wrong grease can make the grease hard and cause issues. Still, good to note the bearings are sealed and I should have mentioned that in the video. I often think of things after I've already posted a video. I know this topic is debatable, and I'm no machinist, but I for one are of the mindset, that a lubricated bearing will last far longer than a bearing not being touched. Thanks again for watching and take care my friend.
