Does anyone know the spindle diameter of this lathe? I'm looking for a Reeves pulley with an inside diameter of 24mm. The Reeves spindle pulley on my Delta looks identical to this one, but I don't know the spindle diameter of the Harbor Freight pulley. Delta no longer makes this pulley and I need a good substitute. Thanks
Jake, I have the same lathe! My tp was doing the same as yours, I cured it by addi5a flat washer to increase the clamping pressure on the tp. Great video!
Appears your belt is still slipping causing the noise and vibration. I did a video of a full motor swap on the same lathe earlier this year already but before I did that on mine I had to loosen the motor mount bolts and pull it taught against the belt. Super simple fix and eliminated all vibrations and noise. If it's still bothering you, you may want to give that a try. Thanks for the vids and keep up the good work.
Thank You Jake, I've been thinking about buying this lathe and although I couldn't find the link to your review, I'm glad to see that it looks like you're happy with it. I kept telling myself "if Jake can do that with it then it must be okay!"
Steve Combs Thank you Steve.. the review will be out Thursday. I didn’t want to put 2 videos out on the same day.. I do like so show people that you don’t have to spend a fortune to make cool stuff.. 👍👍👊
Jake, I have the smaller HF lathe and was waxing down my lathe like you suggested. Works better. I have always had a problem with the banjo and tail stock sticking due the clamping washer getting jammed. I just put a light weight spring next to the clamping washer to help hold the washer loose while moving. Works great . Try it sometime.
Man I really like your videos. Very educational. Your not just a look what I can do person. I appreciate how you explain things. I have the same lathe. I'm going to maintain it now. Keep making videos brother. Tyvm
great info jake! ive got that same model lathe, and its done me a good job so far. im going to order a belt because the HF ones are prone to snap, even when brand new, so ive been told.
New to your channel but am loving watching the various videos. I have this same lathe but my motor housing is starting to come loose and I can not safely turn even the smallest of times. Can you show how to possibly make the repair of this nature as I am not that mechanically inclined and not sure what steps to take. Or recommend another video to review before I attempt this fix so I can save from buying a new one. Thanks
The tail stock nut seemed to always work itself loose a little - what I did was set the nut where I wanted it and stuck a rubber washer over the threads to stop the nut from backing off. I used a garden hose washer - easy and cheap!
@@ageriks0n Alan -- I like your suggestion better than Loctite. I'm afraid my tube is too old to be used any more and I'd have to go buy some. Your idea saves that expense and, as you just pointed out, I wouldn't have to clean the parts. Win, win!
I have the same lathe with another company on the lower pulley wheel with the spring mine doesn't move back as easy as yours did when you squeezed the belt together and has ruined the belt any ideas

Hi Jake. Thank you for your videos and good advice! I'm looking at buying a used one of these off Craigslist. Seller is throwing in tools, blanks and lots of other odds & ends, and only charging $245. It's a 3 hour drive from where I live. QUESTION: I need to shorten the legs on the stand. I'm handicapped and will be turning from a sitting position. Are the legs easy to cut with a grinder? Could I take the lathe off the stand and attach it to a short bench? Let me know your thoughts. I've been wanting to turn for the last 2 years but need to overcome some obstacles, mostly monetary. I'm thinking this may be a good deal for me.
I need replacement parts for my lathe. It's just like yours. I need to replace the handles for the tool rest and the tool rest extension arm. Whatever it's called.
That’s Some good maintenance tips for any lathe. I’m going to have to try that rust remover too. By the way I wonder what happened to the bird 🦜😂. Thanks Jake.
I've used a linked belt on several woodworking tools and they reduce vibration noticeably. they may cost 2-3 times what a normal replacement belt does but not very expensive. Also if you added a wood shelf og the bottom of the lathe and put some weight on it I think it would improve things also.
Jack Miller Thanks for watching Jack. I’m going to bolt it to the floor when I get it to it’s permanent location. I’ve seen those belts before, but never tried one, I probably should get one and compare. 👍👍👊
@@JakeThompson If you do try a linked belt, let us know how well it works with the Reeves drive on your HF lathe. The linked belts don't have a standard 'V' shape and I've often wondered if the linked belt's 'odd' shape would prevent the Reeve's variable pulley system from working properly. I say I've wondered about it, but not so much that I've gone out and tried it on my own lathe! Mine's working just fine. Still on it's original belt!
I've had 2 in less than a month, both broke, the cast iron on the tail stock near the locking mechanism.... Sucks because you can't get a similar sized lathe under 2k... And this one's only 400..
Rite Jake, hope your good Dude. Quite often get nicks in my cast tool rest so every once in a while I draw a file along it then use a diamond file (very fine) never thought of using wax on it. TFS, G :)
Another improvement I made to mine HF lathe, besides adding a lower shelf with 200 pounds of sand on it was to take a spare 48 x 18 wire shelf I had laying around, cut away areas for the legs, and place it under the lathe bed. Most of the chips just fall right through. images.globalindustrial.com/images/enlarge/S1436C_01.jpg?t=1268197200000
I do not have that problem with mine and I have one identically to that all I do is I make sure that the screw at the bottom of that is tightened a little bit And it never moves on me it's perfect for me she just gotta know how to use it if you tighten up the boats underneath it it works just a tiny bit
