    I use a dumb phone, it fits in my pocket, no broken screen, dropped it many times, fits in my tool belt at work, and if I lose it or some how break it, it cheap to replace, so why are they dumb? sounds smart to me.

      I would be out of buisness within 2 weeks if I attempted to switch to a "non smart phone". Key is to add a watch to it that doesnt need to be tethered via bluetooth. You can still get make and accept calls and you dont have to worry about losing a phone, pulling it out, or any of that nonsense. Plus if you do have any emails or notifications they will go to the watch. But I also bought 4 prepaid phones with rollover minutes (60 mins each that never expire) and activated them, charged battery to 100 percent, then turned them off and stuck them in glove boxes of each car with a car charger. I paid 220 bucks for all 4 phones (3g) that are the size of a small bic lighter and 60 min calling card for each. Saftey first.

      @@fabjonjon Well my little flip phone does have BT, I use a ear peace that I can accept calls, don't get me wrong , flip phones are lousy on texting, and other things, like writing down information, I use a smart phone in my truck that can connect to my flip phone, but only use it in my truck, smart phones are just to delicate for most construction sites.
      A pencil and frame work are great for writing down information, and a pencil does not need to be recharged :)
      Stay safe out their, nothing like hitting your hands with a hammer early on a cold morning as your BT shouts at you, and your aim is put off for a mili second. :)

      Nokia responded and said that no, the 8110 will NOT work with a USB-Ethernet adapter. SIGH! Well, that's annoying. They did, however, say that they would forward my question on to the techies as a feature request - which is nice!

    Hi, first time I've checked out your reviews. Impressed. The presentation was thoughtful, clear, informative. It gave me quite a lot to think about which I appreciate. Well done you.
    The limitation of the direction / selection 'blob' that you found so irritating is one of two things about the phone that make me a little dubious about using it. The other one is the prehistoric numeric keypad - press twice for a, press three times for b, etc. I can imagine going full on Hulk at using it.
    A look at the interior, cover off, for the phone to show what size SIM card etc would be used would have helped.
    Appreciate your time and expertise, thank you for the review.
    Take care, keep safe

    Wow! Great video! Thank you so much for sharing your insights into these phones. I am going to be in the market for another phone in the not too distant future and have been wondering if I would find anything I like. My phone of choice is always the flip phone, so I will be watching for the Nokia 2720. Also, I guess I need to do some self educating... always thought a smart phone was one that could access the Internet. So now need to get an understanding of the difference. One thing I DO know... I want nothing to do with 5G. Thanks again!!!

    • @ScottiesTech
      @ScottiesTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Don't worry, you're not the only one who is confused by all this stuff, because it IS confusing. In short, a smartphone does calling and texting and can run apps and access the internet. Dumbphones were more for just calling and sending text messages. But now with dumbphones running KaiOS, dumbphones are quasi-smart... You can install apps that do stuff, you can access the internet, and you can do normal phone stuff. But dumbphones are less powerful than smartphones (computational power). Of course, if you don't want any of the fancy "smarter" stuff, just don't use it, and Bob's your uncle. Piece of cake, right? ;)

    I have watched your videos and am looking at the Nokia 800 Tough OR the Cat B35 phones.
    I think these are using UK chargers so I would need a charging adapters. 110- 220 volts.
    Do you know if Nokia 800 Tough OR the Cat B35 will work in CANADA?

    KaiOS with some Google features; wouldn't that mean that this "dumb phone" is still smart enough to rope people into their corrals of privacy-deprived, data-compromised consumers? To me, one of the primary reasons for not using a smartphone is to improve one's privacy and security by unplugging from google,amazon,and social media (besides, in many cases, reclaiming time for more meaningful pursuits). At 67 and a long-time smartphone user, I'm in the process of selecting a basic flip phone so I can better protect my data and personal privacy, as well as simplfying my lifestyle. Am I understanding correctly that KaiOS is simply a slower, narrower gateway to the problems I'm trying to shut the door to as much as possible?
    Thanks, Scott -- great channel!

      That's a good question. From what I can tell, they are definitely more secure than your average smartphone. On the other hand, that security seems to be more about securing your data from hacking and such, and not necessarily from preventing tracking data and the like from getting into Google's hands. So, in the end I'm not sure.

    I enjoyed your video. Nokia mobile phones are excellent. I have the 3310 (a remake of their old design) and really like it. It is tough, and it snaps back together easily if accidentally dropped. I prefer it's simplicity over the "smart" phones most people use today. I think the slider phone you reviewed is very similar. I can't wait to see the new flip-phone that's soon to be released. Small mobile phones are so much easier to carry and don't need a WiFi connection to get text messages, or to use different features that "smart" phones have. I still have concerns about Google's involvement with the company. They are just too big and powerful, in my opinion. Also, can "Duck, Duck, Go" or Quant be installed on these phones instead of Google (for search)? I suppose they can be used in addition to Google as the operating system is kaiOS, right? Anyway, keep up the good work. p.s. - what do you think about apple iphones (for touch-screen)?

    • @ScottiesTech
      @ScottiesTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The KaiOS app store has 130+ apps, but no DuckDuckGo as of yet as far as I could tell. Of course, you can always use the browser and search via DuckDuckGo. I'm also a bit hesitant still about Google's involvement, because they always try to vacuum up data. On the other hand, one doesn't have to use those apps, they can be more or less blocked, and the apps that are there are just basically web pages (like PWAs) as opposed to "real" Android apps. So, at this point, it looks to me like the possibility for exploitation is fairly low. That may change in the future, but we'll see.

      The default apps cannot be uninstalled without a bit of hacking: sites.google.com/view/bananahackers/customizations/uninstalling-pre-installed-apps

    • @ScottiesTech
      @ScottiesTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dumbphones don't need to have WiFi, but in order to work as cell phones at all, they must be 2G, 3G, 4G, or 5G. Those G's just refer to a particular generation of cell phone tech. There's a lot of confusion out there about this though, mostly because some equipment makers and service providers refer to WiFi as 2.4G or 5G, which that's actually 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, which refers to the frequency used. But wait, there's more! WiFi also has it's own generational versions... although those are usually labeled WiFi 5, WiFi 6, etc... But I've seen the "G" added in there, as well. It's enough to make you go cross-eyed!

    Having some trouble updating my nokia 8110, every time i try to update my OS or software as they call it, it tells me there are no new updates, tried to restart the phone to factory settings, restarting the phone a number of times but still no succes.

    • @ScottiesTech
      @ScottiesTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's a setting in there for downloading updates over WiFi only, or also over the cell data connection. I changed mine to WiFi + cell data, and it was able to grab the latest update okay. If that's not it, I'm not sure what the problem is...

    • @ScottiesTech
      @ScottiesTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Franchement, sauf le fait que l'iPod ne peut pas connecter au réseau téléphonique, c'est presque la même chose qu'une smartphone. Il y a même des capteurs
      comme une gyroscope à trois axes et une accéléromètre. Donc, la possibilité de voir vos données aspirées par "le gouv" est assez élevé. La grande différence, c'est que l'iPod n'est pas toujours connecté à l'internet chaque seconde. Alors, c'est un peut plus "safe", surtout si vous le mettez en "mode avion" si vous n’êtes pas chez vous. Comme ça, au moins il n'y a plus de tracking en temps réel.

    I use speech-to-text when sending SMS text messages. Does LaiOS have speech-to-text functionality for its SMS messaging?

    • @ScottiesTech
      @ScottiesTech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure what happened to my first reply... Yes, you can use Google Assistant for text-to-speech. On the messaging screen, or anywhere else there's a text input box, press and hold the big "center" button on the keypad for a bit, and GA will pop up and write whatever you speak. Of course, that means it's all being fed through Google, but since you don't have to enter your Google Account or e-mail or anything else to use it, there is at least a bit more privacy.
