  • Hey gang, today I’m talking about 25 vegetables that will survive frost in your garden! I talk about those that can take a light frost and those that will survive harder frosts. I also spend some time talking about how you can use row covers, hoop houses, and cold frames to help extend your growing season well into the winter months!

    I'm in 7A and I grow cabbage, collard greens, mustard greens, kale, broccoli, swiss chard, and spinach. They do great through the winter. I might add beets and carrots this year. Your list is great!

      Carrots in the winter are amazing. The cold turns them sweet!

      Do they grow and actually produce when it is so cold? How long do they take to actually grow so that you can harvest your broccoli and heads of cabbage? I am also 7A.

      @@cestmoikim6514 it all depends on the weather. At the very least I should have some collards, cabbage and broccoli by Christmas. However, I've had years when I had some by Thanksgiving. At some point, their growth will slow down but once they start producing the only thing that really stops them is when temps fall below 35 or snow.

      @@farmermarshall Thank you! I plan to build a contraption to cover them to protect them from below-35 temps, and to keep the snow off. Fingers crossed. Is it too late to start carrots now in the ground, or in a large pot?

    I put up a growhousel with 2 layers of plastic an put arches over beds an plastic an has been 30 below no extra heat but sun an spinach, kale , Swiss chard an few other things survive then as it warms up go crazy

      It's good to hear that from someone that gets that cold. We have no issues getting Kale, spinach and Chard to survive the winter in our place, but normally the coldest we ever see is between 0-5. So it's good to know they survive even colder!

      Yes a Cold Frame or even a hoop house will work really well in zone 7a.

    The one thing that guarantees that I do NOT subscribe to a youtubers channel is by having them wasting my time at the beginning of a video telling me to subscribe instead of the actual content I expected to see by the video title headline.

    Hello there, thanks for the good tips. How about tomatoes and Sweet peppers, I plant them middle of July, l am in 🙄zone 5, they have lots of small fruit on them, how do I get them to mature, I took a large garbage plastic bag and tie around the tomAtoe plant. I do not have any of the stuff you mentioned. Would this work.

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can usually get tomatoes and peppers to survive a frost or 2 if you cover them with a fabric row cover or even just a sheet or tarp. But eventually, they will not hold up to the frost any longer, even a couple of nights in a row will do them under.
      You can try stressing the plants by stopping watering them, that may cause the fruit to ripen quicker. Also, you can pick the larger green fruit and bring them inside to ripen. Here's a link to a video I did about that:

      @greenthumb6241 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StoneyAcresGardening You can allso pull up your tomato plants and hang up side down in a frost free place to finish ripening . I'm not sure how well this will work if they are very immature

      Pause, rewind, replay. I already have most seeds he mentioned. Mustard greens and green onions I had growing survived several nights at 14 degrees. But I`m sure the ground was warmer than that.
