My late husband was the gardener. I just prepared and age what he grew so I knew NOTHING about gardening. Dumb of me!
3 years ago I decided I wanted that great grew-it-yourself taste back. So I decided to set up raised beds. It was awful! Some success, too much failure. I think I did everything wrong one can do wrong.
Thanks to TH-camrs like you who are willing to share you talent and knowledge, today I have far more success in the garden than failure and LOVE the great flavors! THANK YOU FOR SHARING WITH US!!

Firstly, let me say that I am so sorry for your loss. Secondly, if I can make a few simple suggestions about heading out into virgin places and making it easy and fun. Peaceful, and a place to both forget and remember. I don't know the degree of your physical ability, but that makes a difference, Have you decided how long you intend to make yourplace, ==yourplace.? Size of your garden.... what you have raised for fruits and vegetables in the past few years.... your location (or zone) makes a difference. I'm in Zone 4, but that really doesn't make much difference. Sometimes age and physical. Most additions to upgrade a garden requires allocation of money. ...do you have a pre determined budget? I only grow organic, heirloom stuff. I collect and use all my own seeds, ....pick, perserve, ferment and can as much as I am able. My garden is about 60 feet long and 15 feet wide. My grocery bill is very low. Give me a shout any time. Dennis... I'm 71.

Spring sucked here in northern Nevada this year. 50+ mph winds, snow the end of May, mixed with 85° days, no rain.... Toms and peppers still not in the ground till this week. But this video is a reminder all is not lost, and maybe, just maybe, we will have a long, decent fall, filled with veg we planted now. Gardening is for optimists, right? So thanks for that. :)

As someone who lives in zone 9, now is the time to prep the garden for the second round of crops. It's hot as hell here but if timed correctly, we can get two crops of corn, beans, potatoes, etc. Makes the mosquitoes bearable.

😂 I’m so happy you mentioned zones and frost dates. I live in the Canadian Rocky Mountains and I’m always amazed by how many people watch TH-cam Gardening videos (mostly American and British) and think they’re going to apply them here. We have a severely short growing season, and not only is when we plant limited, so is what we grow. In the ‘real’ world of zones 2 & 3, one has to look at growing completely differently. I plant some crops in the fall, use Northern Permaculture techniques, and anything/everything gets started either inside or out in the greenhouse. Cover crops are the best secondary crops here, as well as some herbs and medicinal weeds.

Your video is timely for folks like myself who, for a variety of reasons, are late this year. Primarily, the heavy rains washed away many heirloom seeds.
Incidentally, I have grown various types of lettuce in summer, in troughs, placing them along the S and S-E wall. Dappled sunlight keeps away the harshness of summer sun, and they do well.

I just planted potatoes (July 3rd) here in TN. They will be ready to dig in October. My fall plantings of broccoli and snow peas are usually better than my early spring plantings. The broccoli are tiny seedlings under lights right now. I'll put them out in a month or so. As long as you keep the snow peas wet, they don't seem to be bothered by the summer heat.

I am loving these videos you are doing! I recently found your channel and I have wanted to have a garden for a long time but each year comes and goes and I never get it done. It seemed so overwhelming. But I finally got one started this year! I did get a late start but I'm so proud that I have food planted that my family can eat. I have been keeping a very close eye on them, going out and checking several times a day to see if anything has started to develop 😂. 2 days ago I saw there were several tiny tomatoes on one of my plants. I couldn't believe it haha. Your videos have been very helpful. I appreciate them so much!

The San Diego Seed Co. has found great success growing Great Lakes Head Lettuce in the heat. Because it's tightly folded into a head it stays crisp and sweet. I grew it last year in Aurora, Oregon zone 8b and we had record breaking heat last Summer. This lettuce did fine. I tried the lettuce you named ( I did a lot of research first before purchasing lettuce seed for 2021) I didn't like the taste of the "Summer Lettuce" and the price for the seed was a bit much. I also grow Winter Density every Fall.

Thanks for the info! I'm not much for head lettuce but it's good to hear about other varieties. Of the 5 summer lettuces I listed I've only tasted 2, Nevada and muir. I quite like Nevada and we have grown it every year for about 10 years now. Muir is okay. I am currently growing the other 3 so I will let you know what I think in about a month.

First year gardening. My garden is 35ft by 50 ft. So far I grew squad, yellow green and the white. Broccoli, tomatoes, carrots, cabbage, jalapeno,, bell peppers, I tried lettuce and that was a fail. Green onions, radishes, spinach, and green beans. Oh corn too.
My family always said I had a green thumb. Tbh I don't I just water 🤣

Hey Rick, so I got cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower started, germination only took 3 days. But now they are all 3-4 inches tall, and really leggy. It’s been above 100* and will be for a while according to the forecast. So do I need to get them out of the starting tray and into pots? Also how deep should I plant them, do I burry part of the stem? I’ve never had anything take off like this before.
