    Auto start stop is available for 2020 as a software update to place it on the home screen.

    Here's a question. I'm sitting in my outback either the engine is running or my key fob is with me. I'll like to open the rear hatch... I push the button and I get 3 beeps. Oh, I have to unlock the doors to open the trunk. Seems to me, if I can reach the button on the dashboard, it should not require all doors be unlocked and just unlock the hatch. After all, I could climb over the seats and access the cargo area that way. (This pertains to my 2016 Outback. I'm hoping the 6th gen. has 'fixed' this 'problem'.

      Makes sense. In this case, it is a safety feature. Subaru is kind of obsessed with safety, to a fault some argue. However, that obsession is what makes the Subaru one of the safest cars on the road.

    Great vid series - keep them coming! I wonder if Subaru will offer factory installed "dash cam" recording as an option. As it is, if you want a dash cam for security on the road (front and rear recording) one has to go to Best Buy or similar to have a professional installation. You can buy the mounted dash cams but then this becomes a space clutter issue. I hope Subaru offers this option soon!

    You can now turn off '20 - '22 Outback Auto Start/Stop with the "A" button on the first screen - simple and fast. Auto Start/Stop still bugging you? Buy & install (10 minutes) the Auto Stop Eliminator. You can then turn ASS off and keep it off unless YOU choose to turn it back on.

    2020 Limited owner. I love the car but there are some annoying features. I’m glad the auto start button is front and center now. It needs a proximity feature to turn it off near home. Shuts down when I pull up to garage and when maneuvering within it. Next is heated seats need rocker switches back. Facial recognition still is weak. Lane keep needs improvement and stay hands off longer or work like GM’s system does. Should be software to do that.

    Auto start-stop is a button on the home screen on my 2021 Onyx XT. I guess enough people complained about it that they made it on the top.

    Have not purchased a Subaru..yet. but while test driving a Touring xt outback over the weekend I tried a few things. You can change the radio station. Change the source.. xm fm etc.. change the temperature settings all with the voice button. Press the voice button and say. Set temperature to 72. Or change to xm the message. I'm sure there are plenty of other things that can be done via voice. I have a 2019 Ram with the 12inch uconnect and it does lots more stuff than you can imagine. I can press the voice button and say set Passenger temperature to 71 and it will only change the passenger side temp.

      Finally, this wonderful feature has been noticed. Thank you REDNECKINVEGAS. Strong work. One does not need to divert attention away from the road or touch the screen to make the cool screen functions work. Most dealer salespeople appear to have no idea that the voice activated control exists and that it can control most of the screen functions.

    Thank you! I generally watch your fantastic Videos thru my Smart TV, so I don't have a keyboard, or ability to leave a comment while viewing. A couple of nights ago, I got more caught up with your videos, and your Dealership Mode & Factory Mode Videos were very helpful. I compared what yours showed, vs. mine. Like yours, in the status screen, mine shows GPS as Green/OK. But, the next screens -- System Sensor Check, and GNSS Information -- show all blank on mine, except for the mm/dd/yyyy, and Greenwich Time. Nothing under GNSS Reception Numbers, or Statuses. And, none of the Satellites showing any connection info -- all blank. But, thanx to YOU, I know at least know why my Nav Map is showing me as being in Manhattan! I am over 2 hrs from the nearest Subaru Dealership. I will bring up this issue, and your tips, to the Dealership, when I take it in for my first 6 mos. check-up, etc, toward the end of March. But, I wanted to give you a HUGE SHOUT OUT of THANKS!!! It was truly thoughtful that you took your valuable time to research the various Subaru Software issues. And, especially, the specific issue that I am having with the NAV Map. I heard back within two days from Subaru Help, regarding my email to them about my problem. They recommended a Factory Reset. I did that. It cleared out all of my customizations (radio presets, which on/off systems I wanted, etc.. ), all of which were no problem to re-establish. But, the Factory Reset did nothing to resolve the Nav Map issue. Ive tried many times to uninstall/reinstall the Surbaru Starlink App, hoping that it would re-communicate/configure the Map, once it connected again. Of, course, no luck. By the way, I also called TomTom Support, and they only suggested that I contact Subaru, (which, by then, I had done so, twice).
    Anyway, thank you for your tremendous help & responsiveness. If I knew how to turn on/ reset the proper fuse, I'd do so! LOL! But, I did take comfort in knowing that I'm not the only one having that issue.
    , as
    I enjoy your videos -- all of them, super helpful, and informative, and very well done! I appreciate the service that you are performing for the Outback 2020 Community, non gratis. In your Common Questions video, I recognized several of the things that you brought up, as being commonly known. Again, glad I'm not the only one!
    Keep up the excellent work, Ryan! And, again -- THANK YOU!
    Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year to you, and yours.

    • @SubaruOwnerTips

      Thanks! I appreciate the compliment. Sounds like you may have the PDI fuse in the wrong place. I've heard so many stories from owners indicating that Subaru retailers are not getting the pre-delivery inspection done correctly. This happened to me. There are 67 areas they need to check. I would take it back and very firmly expect them to perform the entire PDI again. As I stated, if they missed one of the most important PDI items (the fuse) they very likely missed several others. They should make it right and prove to you everything was done properly. You might even ask them to perform the PDI in front of you, or ask them to show you the PDI checklist from the 2020MY Service Manual so you can follow along. There are 38 pages of steps they need to follow. It isn't a quick operation, which may be why so many retailers skip it.
      There are some special cases that can occur when moving the delivery fuse. It is best left to the service department to do this. If an issue does come up, it would be best if they were the ones to cause it. Otherwise they may not honor a warranty claim.

    BTW, you mention at about 8:20 in that the RH defrost button will keep the AutoStop/Start feature from activating . It should be noted that the Front Defroster button (on the LH side of the screen) also deactivates the feature and does not time out.

    • @SubaruOwnerTips
      @SubaruOwnerTips  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great point. You can set the electronic defrost/deice to also not turn off, though there are limitations. You must be moving the vehicle above 9mph, for example, or it still still shut off after 15 minutes.

    You are a wealth of information! Thank you for spending your hard-earned money to purchase the Subaru Tech Tips edition and sharing them with us. I do have a question: The lane centering eyesight feature in my 2020 OB Touring XT hugs the centerline (uncomfortably so) in left turns and the shoulder line in right turns. It also ping-pongs a bit on straight aways. Have you heard of similar complaints? I asked my Subaru service department and was told the system will "learn" my driving style and adjust accordingly. REALLY?!

    • @SubaruOwnerTips
      @SubaruOwnerTips  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      At freeway speeds I notice some slight ping-pong in some cases. It will also hug either the right or left side of the lane. Lane Centering is a very complicated feature that the manual doesn't begin to properly cover. I would love to make a video about it. I've studied detailed information about its operation and have much to share. Sadly, it looks like I will need access to a closed driving course to demonstrate its special modes. I'm also going to need a second vehicle. It wouldn't be safe to try to film all these modes while driving, even with an assistant.
      I'm hoping one of the bigger Subaru channels or big-time reviewers with the right equipment & knowledge can make a comprehensive review of LKA/Lane Centering. It will for sure push the limits of my capability as 'a guy with an iPhone.' There may be additional information that Subaru experts will know about the system. I've not heard about it learning driving styles. Maybe it does that, but I can't find any evidence suggesting that is the case. I've also not experienced it "getting better."

      @@SubaruOwnerTips Listen, "a guy with an iPhone," you are doing a fantastic job and providing much needed tutorials, on a brand new OB, on a brand new platform, with a brand new infotainment system. I applaud your enthusiasm and desire to study, learn and teach. I, for one, would welcome an in-depth video, or a series, to cover LKA/Lane Centering. I certainly understand the logistics of such an endeavor.

    Start/stop feature will cause oil starvation and premature wear of the turbo bearings.
    Shut off = inadequate/falling to 0 oil pressure.
    Restart = dry firing with 0 oil pressure.
    Repeted cycles = count on premature turbo failure.

    A question about the information screen. In my 2020 Onyx XT the screen seem changes from the favorite widgets screen (with engine oil temp) to the Nav screen with the crossing streets all by itself, without any input from anyone, when starting the car. Is that normal? Is there a way to make the favorite widgets screen the default screen? Thanks.

    To comment on the issue of adjusting the infotainment volume not adjusting and it adjusting the notification volume. There's another way to quickly fix this that I've found. Within android auto similar to what you said, click on the microphone button in android auto (This pulls up the google assistant verses the car assistant) then you can click anywhere on the screen and it'll cancel. This is much faster then waiting to the on board assistant then saying cancel.

    Anyone else have the radio sound go dead while driving? No stations would work. I twisted volume control and the volume indicator would display and go up and down, but no sound. I rebooted system by holding volume button down, don't let go until it restarts. Radio then worked, but not very happy it happened at 40 miles on the odometer.

      The batteries that come with the OB aren't fantastic. Look in to a good AGM battery from Costco when the factory one finally dies. This will really help as the OB has quite a bit of electrical load from many systems. The starter has been tested to be reliable for something like 100,000 cycles. It also has over 100 signals and sensors to help the Auto Start Stop feature work. Many people find it annoying, but the amount of engineering put in to the system to enhance its longevity is impressive. I've studied it in detail.

    Why can’t the AVH (auto vehicle hold) be left on permanently. It shuts off whenever I turn off the ignition. And I have to turn it on again every time I get into the car. It’s a feature I use every time I drive. In my 2016 Subaru Outback I could leave it permanently on.

    • @ofcbob6391
      @ofcbob6391 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm hearing that AVH is tied to the auto stop/start function (which most all drivers hate, are you listening auto makers?)

    • @SubaruOwnerTips
      @SubaruOwnerTips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      AVH resets for safety reasons. There are various situations in which you don't want the braking system to behave in an unexpected way. There is no telling who may drive your car. A valet driver, tow truck driver, mechanic, and so on. The car always resets to a known state. There is the possibility an aftermarket device can override this behavior, but it would involve a small modification to the vehicle.

    Here’s a turn signal tip (“One-Touch Lane Changer):
    That feature only gives three blinks. I guess I’m not that aggressive; I’d like five or six blinks to change lanes or get off the freeway.
    My first choice would be to set this to six blinks instead of the three. But, alas, among the myriad of settings in this car, we can’t adjust this one. BUT I accidentally figured out that swiping the turn signal lever twice will give you five blinks. Not six. Five.

    I just bought a 2021 Outback Onyx Edition 2 weeks ago. Love the car and all, but I'm having a random issue that I just can't figure out. Maybe someone can help me???
    When I play Pandora via my Android phone and Bluetooth (in other words, the phone is NOT plugged into the car via USB and Android Auto), the music will randomly go silent. The song progress bar/counter continues to progress as though the song is still playing, and I can skip and pause the song, though the sound still doesn't play. This seems to always occur near the end of a song (though I don't know if this is just coincidence).
    The only way to temporarily remedy the problwm is to disconnect and reconnect bluetooth or reset the car's infotainment by holding the power/mute button for 10s. After that, I can get a few more minutes to hours before the issue randomly occurs again.
    Other notes: I have plenty of data on my phone plan, Pandora is set to play "standard" quality over data, and when the issue occurs, I'm not traveling through data dead zones. Also, when I use Android Auto + Pandora, I don't seem to have the issue, but I dom't always want to pull my big phone out of my pocket and plug it into my car just to listen to music.
    Can anyone help me? This is extremely annoying!

    I’m 67. That may explain why I’m bugged by high tech, high cost, and eventually wallet draining repair/maintenance on new cars. Many of which features owners seem to feel are a nuisance at least, annoyance and worst, and more than a few can’t seem to figure out. I suppose lane assist is a must if your eyes are always on a screen. My ‘06 Legacy wagon has been nearly trouble free for 180,000 miles. I have a spouse more than willing/able to tell me if/when I’m about to veer out of my lane. My car is showing signs of wanting a replacement. If Subaru offered a basic model with fewer bells and whistles I’d be in. I believe auto stop/start is a trick manufacturers employ to meet fuel efficiency standards by averaging the fuel used during the short times an engine is not running. I’m sure that feature alone would drive me nuts. Other than that, no complaints.

    • @HB-nb6pf
      @HB-nb6pf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SubaruOwnerTips I did find the answer since I asked you. On iOS, open bluetooth settings (once paired with Subaru), tap the info button for Subaru ('i' with a circle around it). If your iOS device is paired, an option will appear to "allow notifications". Turn that ON. This solved my problem.
      Now the only problem I have left is that for some reason, any time I am paired (every time I drive), Subaru wants to automatically play whatever music streaming app I was last playing, or if nothing had been streaming, it auto-plays from my Music App, even if I haven't been listening to Music. I cannot figure out how to stop this, and neither can the internet tubes. If you come up with a resolve for that one, I'd love to hear it, but chances are, it's going to be a software update.

    how do you turn of the RAB on a 2021 Outback? I'm getting false readings due to my bike rack

    Ryan have you downloaded the newest computer update that allows you to turn off Auto Start/Stop one page earlier on the monitor? The "other" tab-push is gone/after touching the car icon, the first page now has the turn off. I appreciate this feature as I turn it off 95% of the time, it just doesn't make sense in my traffic load to use it. I received this download at the dealership/service department, as I was having a several computer quirks ... all has been well since the new computer update. My 2020 Outback just has 2150 miles on it and the update was completed at 1500 miles.

      Additionally, this update changes your car play / radio display - it separates them, I am used to this now, I wasn't fond of this change at first.

      If you have an Onyx or Touring, there is a button near the drive selector and the front view will be displayed on the screen.

    I think the album art turning back into a generic icon explanation from Subaru is more a case of, "Uh oh. We have a software flaw. When drivers start moving, the display does this weird thing where it replaces the album artwork with the generic mountain icon. What should we do?" "Well, how much will it cost us to fix it?" "I dunno. Probably a few thousand dollars to debug the code." "Absolutely not. Just document the flaw as a feature, and problem solved."

    • @SubaruOwnerTips
      @SubaruOwnerTips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is changed in the latest software update. The album art no longer changes.

    I appreciate your videos! One question I have is in my 2017 outback, if I were on let's say the phone screen, I could go back to the radio screen by holding the tune know. In the 2020 it looks like when you hold the tune knob it takes you to the EQ settings, which I thought was strange, but do you know f a shortcut to get back to the radio screen from any other screen?

    • @SubaruOwnerTips
      @SubaruOwnerTips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not aware of a shortcut like that. I usually control the radio using the steering wheel controls, so maybe there is a way and I've just not gone looking for it. If you find out how, let us know.

    To me, it doesn't make sense to turn on a defroster to disable auto start. On my 2020 Outback Limited, I turn on AVH (Auto Vehicle Hold), which I want anyway, and it disables Auto Start

    • @SubaruOwnerTips
      @SubaruOwnerTips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I went and tested this. I thought I had before, and AVH was still causing Auto Start Stop to fire. However, I tried it tonight and it didn't. Seems like a good work-around, or there is something more complex going on and needs more testing.

    One of the biggest problems with Subaru's auto start/stop is that it is so much rougher than other makes. You can really feel the engine shudder when it restarts. I have a question about the system. Instead of going through the menus to turn it off, can you use a voice command after hitting the button on the steering wheel? If so, that would seem to be a lot less distracting and take fewer steps than navigating menus.

    • @SubaruOwnerTips
      @SubaruOwnerTips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I cannot get a voice command to turn it off. Good idea, though.

    Have you, or has anyone reading these comments, had any issue with the 2020 models tail lights getting condensed moisture on the inside? Upon Googling, it looks like there are a few people with this issue. Some say it's an issue that Subaru should fix, others say NBD. I contacted my dealer, they told me it's been an issue on many past models but has never caused problems like light burnout, but that it's "probably" covered under warranty. Thoughts?

    • @SubaruOwnerTips
      @SubaruOwnerTips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've not had an issue like that. What does your Subaru retailer say? Keep us posted.

    Ryan, can I turn on high beams manually and will blue light display? Thank you

    • @SubaruOwnerTips
      @SubaruOwnerTips  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You sure can. Put the lights in to manual "ON" mode (not on "AUTO"). Then, push the light stalk forward (similar to many other vehicles). It will then turn on the high beams. Just remember to turn off your headlights manually as well. If you do that in "AUTO" mode, it will use the Eyesight cameras to decide when to turn on the high beams and turn them off automatically. It works really well in very dark areas like long stretches of county or state highways. It doesn't work very well if there are lots of bright lights from street signs and other things. I use both methods depending on driving conditions.

    I understand the reasons for the auto start and stop function but I have not seen or read anything that lets me feel better about wear and tear on the engine starter. This seems that this add a lot of wear on the starter and if it goes bad after the 36,000 mile warranty is it covered by Subaru? If you are doing a lot of stop and go driving or in heavy traffic, this can place the same amount of starter use in a day that you would only get in a year.

    • @SubaruOwnerTips
      @SubaruOwnerTips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @SubaruOwnerTips
      @SubaruOwnerTips  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the same issue, and kept setting them. Eventually it "remembered" all my settings. It seems to do it both by driver profile, and by source. You have to set each one. After setting each one, I've only had the settings reset to zero one time, and restarting the car brought them back.

      When in reverse, with the rear view camera up, you'll notice an indicator labeled "RAB." Press and hold this button to turn reverse auto breaking on and off. Don't forget to turn it back on after removing the bike rack. The habit of keeping it on is a big part of the safety of the system.

    As for not being able to long-press the voice command button to access Siri through Bluetooth, even my little 2017 compact car I had before this Outback worked with Siri this way. So, I'm not buying Subaru's explanation. I think they rushed this product and decided just to leave all the flaws baked in and make claims to try to explain them away as anything other than flaws.

    • @SubaruOwnerTips
