I would recommend the CGP Grey videos on voting systems for a detailed (though not long) description but the TLDR is that the FPTP system results in a 2 party system and doesn't allow people to vote for who they actually want. Aside from FPTP the electoral collage, right wing bias, systematic gerrymandering, bigotry, misinformation and much more further weakens American 'democracy' which is why the US is considered a flawed democracy rather than a full democracy.
