    What's your favorite type of light to photograph?

    • @DavidSenteno
      @DavidSenteno 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mark Denney I like the ending edge of blue hour and just the end of golden hour, but I'll shoot any light if I like a composition. I'm scheduling trips now to work on foggy, moody, scenes with hopefully some light beams. Something new for the Panda.

      David Senteno Sunbeams are amazing! I’m always on the lookout for them.

      Nice video again!.... I like both golden hour and blue hour.... golden hour is more suitable for landscapes, blue hour is great for cityscapes....

      Excellent video! It got my creative juices flowing. Now, I wanna do some juxtaposing portraits of my wife and landscape at blue hour. I'm thinking with a speedlite umbrella for a Rembrandt or a split light with the blue hour casting on her other side. We have a beautiful bridge near us. I think I'll use that for the backdrop. Thanks!

    Seasons play a part. In summer in Scotland, the blue hour lasts from 10pm to 2am and is fantastic for cityscapes. In winter, the golden hour in Scotland is lengthy both in the morning and late afternoon, but the blue hour is very short. So for me its about how I can practically shoot to the maximum. Right now is tough (late August) because the morning golden and blue hours are at 4.30am to 6am (still too early for me) and then we get 10 hours of flat/dull light (ok, useful for waterfalls) before getting a fairly brief golden/blue hour at 8-9pm. Winter is great because you can shoot from 8am through to 4pm and mostly in blue hour and golden hour conditions. As an overall rule, I like the golden hour most and the morning blue hour (so quit out there)

    To me.. the most important aspect or rather quality of a landscape photo.. is composition.
    If the composition is really werid or off.. doesnt matter what light it's shot in.. the photo is still bad.. to me at least.
    Light comes second. At least to me. I often notice composition first then light.

    • @MarkDenneyPhoto
      @MarkDenneyPhoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sgpork Yep either composition or light - no doubt those are the two most important.

      I’m a newbie in photography but I enjoy landscape at the moment. I did notice that composition play a huge role. It will provide a huge impact if the composition is perfect. But unfortunately, I also struggle how to compose correctly. Thankfully this channel is helping me.
      I also agree that light is the other important key to landscape photography as well.

    I have a saying in photography that cameras are actually light capture machines ...yes they capture the light and the sensor creates the image
    So I’m looking at light and then think composition and how I can use that light ....cameras are light capture machines and it’s really helped me improve photography

  • @vacanechaser

    great examples of the different light. my problem is sometimes not leaving the yellow or orange tones in the foreground or on the subject and trying to "correct" it. great content as always

    • @whafrog
      @whafrog 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also tend to switch over to B&W, but I don't consider it "stuck". I often prefer that time of day for the contrast. Golden hour is nice, *if* that's what you want, but it's not the be-all-end-all, and frankly can be kind of boring. There is plenty of shooting to do at any time of day!

    • @GeorgeLoch

      I look for details in the shady areas. We usually think of landscape photos as grand vistas, but those landscapes are made up of small intricacies that have their own beauty.

    Hey Mark, loving your videos. One thing that would be SUPER helpful would be timestamps (either in the description or a pinned comment) to various parts of your videos. As a noobie, if I want to go back and rewatch, say, just the portion on flat lighting, I have to spend a while hopping around until I can find it. For rewatching purposes, timestamps would be amazing! Cheers, and thanks for all the great info.

    Bright bursts of light through heavy cloud cover and then through tree canopies can give you awesome bright highlights in certain areas with shadows on other bits. If you are lucky enough to get the light hitting the right areas it can make some great images. It's probably the hardest to pull off too as everything aligning is pretty rare.

    • @MarkDenneyPhoto
      @MarkDenneyPhoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely and if you can throw a bit of fog on top of that, pure magic! Love those types of conditions.

    • @RamaSivamani
      @RamaSivamani 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah this is why overnight storms are exciting. Then you may get the storm ending and the storm starting to break up around sunrise so you get really amazing light with the early morning sun starting to come through some of the gaps in the clouds. Same can be said about day time storms that break and start to dissipate around sunset but I find that day time storms tend to be less likely for that to happen compared to an overnight storm.

    I think my favourite time of shooting is midday on a broken cloudy day. The magic for me is capturing a scene where the cloud shadows cover parts of the landscape allowing you to use the shadows and sunlight to pick out parts of the scene and nature does the highlighting for you.

    Thanks for another very useful video, Mark. My favorite sky is the evening transition from blue hour to astro twilight when the sky becomes a deep indigo and a few bright stars dot the sky. The morning sky just doesn't have the same hues that the evening sky does here in the high desert. How is it back east, does the blue hour sky differ from morning to night?
    Nice photos, Mark. When you zoomed in to show detail, I thought you must have upgraded to the a7Riv. I had to look at your profile where I saw that you went for the Riii instead (same as I shoot with). I'm impressed with how much detail it appears you get out of it.

    Awesome! I typically like going for the blue/golden hour in the morning. However, it definitely takes some discipline. Tried getting up early for sunrise while I was in Florida over the weekend. After the 2nd day of rain I gave up on it. Not even one good evening golden hour either. Oh well, maybe next time I'm down. I will definitely be trying to get some more backlit photos, as I've never really played around with that.

Growing up in Massachusetts, this is my favorite time of year for landscape. The colors are typically brilliant especially when the clouds are in. Thank you, I always enjoy watching your videos. For me although I do like the morning and the sunset light, I realize that I am most active during the rest of the day. So I must work with what I have, so I consider it would be a waste not to take photos during the day. There are times and angles that work very well even during noon time. The only one that I don't like, frankly is when the sky is overcast with a uniform white layer of clouds, indistinguishable. But even that won't stop me from pressing the button.

      Yeah those days where the sky as no texture or detail in it can be hard especially if your image has a large portion of the sky it's dependent on.

    I am loving all aspects of blue hour and Golden hour even if I haven't 100% figured it out yet. Sometimes I hit composition and fail at light and the other way around! We get so much brutal sun up here, sometimes I have a tough time trying to find a good time and place to shoot from! I hit a couple almost pre blue hour photos that the sun was just lighting up the horizon and caught some amazing silhouette mountain photos I was actually pretty happy with.

      I know what you mean - sometimes it's hard to get every aspect of a great photo to happen at one time.

    I love golden hour. Really super video. Images are awesome. Is the image snow on the tree (backlight) taken using bracketing? I didn't get that kind of image. Either it is totally black or sun clouds etc are washed out. I like that image especially, nice golden dews appears on the edge of the snow. Great man...

      Many thanks Ravi! That was actually a single image exposed for the sunburst - I was able to pull the rest of the detail out of the shadows.

    Thanks Mark, great video. It was a very concise, easy to follow explanation of the many scenarios. My largest struggle has been predicting the light and the place to be based on that. I use Photopills and TPE but if I don't have a specific plan for the sun, it's hard to decide if it should be in the frame, towards my back etc. Also, facing North or South always seems like a hard one to predict. I think the Golden Gate Bridge image you showed was a great example of the latter, but I'd love to hear more on your thoughts for these situations.

      Thanks John - really appreciate it! I might make individual videos focusing on each of the 4 types of light covered here for additional detail.

    Another quite interesting video. But you forgot to mention "no sunlight at all", also known as night photography. 😅 It's one of my favorites. If the sky is clear. On the other hand, it might not be the most common light situation for most photographers.

    • @MarkDenneyPhoto
      @MarkDenneyPhoto  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great to hear - thank you! I was going to add in night, but then figured darkness is actually the absence of light and opted to keep it out of this one:)

    Thank you so much for this video Mark! As with all your videos, this one was so helpful. I have two favorites, blue and golden light. However, I plan on going out more during flat light during this late summer and early fall. This video really helped encourage me to try some new lighting. Have a great week!

    Good explanation and some great examples of photos in each type of light that you referenced. I've always kind of stayed away from the cloudy flat light. Your explanation gave me some encouragement to get out and do some photography during that lighting. Also, your photographs of the creek in WVA and the Golden Gate with the foreground flowers were superb.

    Just a note on the length of blue and golden hour, it really depends on your latitude and season. In the winter up north here, golden hour lasts most of the day; in the summer, blue hour is definitely more than an hour...
