    In this week’s episode, we discuss 5 simple steps for perfectly focused landscape photos. Understanding how to focus and where to focus in order to get your entire scene perfectly sharp is arguably the most difficult aspect of landscape photography. How many times have you taken a photo and focused on the background only to find the foreground is out of focus, or focused on the foreground only to find that your background is now out of focus? That's the problem we'll solve today with these 5 super simple steps.
    I've heard focusing techniques and best practices explained many times, some are articulated very well and others have left my heard spinning. I'm hoping this video will easily explain the multiple different focusing approaches that you can apply to your landscape photography. The three focusing techniques discussed in this video will solve the vast majority of all focusing situations you may encounter while on-location, but there are certain situations that require a technique called "Focus Stacking", here's a link to a video I made on this very topic:
    Focus Stacking Video • The FASTEST WAY to FOC...
    Regardless what type of photography you're into, the camera focus tips and settings discussed here can be applied to any genre of photography. So understanding how to get perfectly focused landscape photos will also enable you to do the same across various other types of photography as well!
    If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below - I guarantee I'll get back to ya.
    Thanks for watching everyone!

    Mark, your channel has quickly become one of my favorites. Not only is the info great, but very practical and presented in an easy to follow format. Plus I like that you jump right into things instead of having some obnoxious intro music and animation sequence. I also appreciate the overall aesthetic of your work space, information pacing, tone, lighting, etc. Just an overall good experience with someone who is actually relatable. Keep up the good work

    New drinking game, watch this video and take a shot each time Mark says "ultimately". Just kidding Mark. I only recently came across your channel and it has already become my favorite photography channel. I cant stand long drawn out and annoying intros, ridiculous music and dizzying b-roll. You get right to business and I like that. Your explanations and examples are easy to understand, you speak clearly and don't use made up words. I learn a lot each time I watch one of your videos. Thank you for the time and effort you put in to them.

    Another tip for aging eyes is to use a magnifying loupe in addition to the max magnification your cameras manual focusing aids can provide. I use this extensively for astro-landscapes to get pin-point focus on the stars.

    I've been using Nikons for sixty years. When I use a current Nikon the first thing I do is determine how to set if for manual focus, aperture, and shutter speed. This is essential! Yes i use automatic modes when appropriate. And I always shoot many combinations so that I have something to work with on the computer in Lightroom.

    About the camera strap flapping I want to leave a tip. I am not a fan of strap removal: usually I mix handheld and tripod shooting and I want my camera strap for carrying the camera. What I do to reduce strap flapping is to tie it to the tripod legs or below the ball head with velcro bands, I leave these on the tripod legs for transportation. I used rubber bands first, but velcro gives me more flexibility and lasts longer.

    Another spot on video! The hardest part of landscape photography for me is finding good light. It's so hard when you are on vacation with the family doing the site seeing thing during the harsh daylight and coming away with any keepers. I often go out alone early or late for that very reason but it's always a crap shoot when you are at a famous landmark hoping for that killer morning or evening light and often turns out to be boring and gray. Sometimes I feel my trip was kind of a waste if I don't come home with some shots I feel I could hang on the wall. Then again, I consider it fun bonding time with the family so it's a win win either way you look at it...

  • @Greatdome99
    @Greatdome99 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good stuff.
    Regarding depth of field, older manual focus lenses had depth of field scales which made focusing far easier. Since autofocus lenses don't rotate much, a depth of field scale would be very tiny. I wish cameras had built-in depth of field readouts. . .
    Regarding ISO: Though higher ISOs degrade image, setting lenses wide open is worse. Seems better to set f-stop and shutter speed, then adjust ISO (though this is pretty awkward on most cameras). A photo set at ISO 400 at f11 is far sharper than at ISO 100 at f4, especially with slow zoom lenses--if depth of field is not an issue. It's a three-way compromise.
