Man we have come a long way. I'm 69 and when I first became interested in cameras I would buy the $1.00 Kodak books they would sell. The photographer would show you his picture and explain to you how it was done it was great.

After several years of not being able to commit to buying a camera and taking iPhone only photos, I recently got a great deal on an A7rii with 50mm lens and have been diving in head first. These videos have been the most helpful for someone who is just getting into it but isn't too dumbed down or too much time explaining stuff. Lots of great tips!!

AMAZING VIDEO, watching after you hit 150k :)
    -CHECKLIST:
-BEFORE SHOOTING: Visualize scene in your mind and set composition.
-1: Set White balance, shoot raw to change it later. Auto WB works fine in raw.
-2: Set what exposure shooting mode to use, Aperture priority, shutter priority, manual.
-3: Set Aperture, ask yourself what is the nearest subject in your frame. f11-16 is usually ideal for entire frame in focus. f11 (usually) if all objects are distant.
-4: Set Shutter Speed, what do you want to do with motion in scene if there is any? Freeze it or show it? Fast shutter to freeze, slow shutter to show motion.
-5: Set ISO. Lowest/base ISO for less noise and grain, but raise ISO if you are unable to open aperture or slow down shutter speed since those take priority.
Watch the whole video he explains it so much better! Just thought I'd write out the checklist so you all could screenshot it and refer to it while shooting!

    Two comments from me:
    1) to reduce vibrations first raise the mirror and then release the shutter (camera settings)
    2) details can ALWAYS be recovered from underexposed areas, NEVER from highly overexposed areas.

Part of the process I also consider is "do I need one or more filters" as these also impact on the amount of light hitting the sensor and how much do I want to slow down the water with a NDF or reduce the glare with a circular polariser. As with your other video suggestions, take more shots changing composition with landscape and portrait variations and it never hurts to bracket your shots so you have all bases covered during post-production. Great advice.

Absolutely loving learning from you, Mark! You are clear, concise, patient and honest. Your integrity comes through loud and clear and I plan to view all of your videos. I'm taking notes, but would love to have a list of all you've done. I took a photography class a couple of years ago and learned a lot, though mechanics are not my specialty. It seems that all learning experiencing are finally beginning to gel, just in time, however, as I am on the brink of retirement. I have suddenly become passionate about landscape photography and took my first intentional photography journey to Glacier National Park last month and am, for the first time, very pleased with my work. Thank you for your help! Looking forward to your Wednesday video. What time?

Bit late to the party, so congratulations on nearly trebling you subscribers since making this video, myself included. Excellent advice for a beginner like myself, will try this thought process out as I have often wondered how settings are decided on. I understand the Exposure Triangle quite well but settings can be quite baffling for a beginner, this video helps enormously. For a beginner like myself would you still recommend shooting in RAW despite the fact that I’m not too interested in “post production” at the moment, just want to get competent with using my camera and sharing any reasonable images with friends on social media etc? Keep up the great work Mark, I tune in regularly and I am taking on board all the superb advice 👍

All in all one has to take his time to find the best settings for his camera depending on the location and situation.
Taking test shots is a must until one can figure out what are the best settings for that specific scene.
    Thank you very much

Mark, September was worthy of celebration for me also. For my birthday I finally picked up a 16-35 G Master to top of my A7Rii. I call it my "Denny". I hope it brings me many good things!

Congratulations to reach the 50K subscribers 👏🏼 I'm always happy when I see a new video from you.
I mostly shoot landscape in A-mode, but this also depends (as you mentioned) if there are some dynamic elements as moving leaves. Sometimes it can be tricky if you have strong wind, the trees are shaking but you also have water in your composition and you want make a long exposure. Clouds are also a big topic and how longer exposures can change them and the look of the photo.
And I mostly use ISO 100 (I own the A7R III) when I use the tripod (of course not for astrophotography) and Auto ISO for hand held photos.

Mark ..You are an excellent teacher...whatever i was struggling to learn for a long long time ..you just solved in 15 minutes...truly incredible..Very concise...precise and to the point.I have a suggestion though..Could you please please do a video on long exposure and shutter speed to show the motion of the water...i have been struggling a long time to smoothen the water movement but with no luck.Thank you Mark.

I'm a beginner and have been learning about exposure and the exposure triangle. Through reading and watching TH-cam I have a pretty good grasp of the exposure triangle. Now I've been STRUGGLING with WHERE TO START! This video helped me tremendously in giving me a starting point from which to build on. Thanks Mark, you are producing some great content!
