Thank you for watching our mollies. I really like mollies and we'll be doing more videos of them and the progress toward restoring our strains. Charles
Thanks for the video. I really admire your persistence. I think it would be really easy to give up on that strain of mollies after you lost the original breeders.
I wonder if there may have been some differences in pH between the two houses that caused the breeding issues. Assuming the light and temps were the same, that's about the only other major difference I can think may cause issues. Cheers from North Florida!
The two greenhouses have a common well source. Also, I check water parameters fairly frequently and pH and hardness are essentially the same. But who knows what happened in the aftermath of the Texas Winter Storm. Charles
Charles this was very interesting. Any idea why they are called “wag”? What makes them a “wag”? What is the difference between sail fin, high fin and variatus? I absolutely love platys and really enjoy your videos and wealth of knowledge that you freely share! Thank you!
I think "wag" comes from the black caudal (tailfin) wagging as the fish swims. Sailfin and Hifin in swords and platies is a dominant gene (properly allele). The characteristic was first found by Ms. Simpson in swordtails and was transferred to platies via hybridization. Molly sailfins are entirely different, requiring multiple genes. I'll cover this in a future molly video. Charles
We very rarely buy new breeders since quarantine is complicated in recirculating systems like our greenhouses. We quarantine for a long, long time (and test with some of our fish) in outside vats. That means we can only get new stock in the spring and fall when outside temperatures are neither too hot nor too cold. Charles
We keep mollies in hard, alkaline water (pH above 8). They are fed 50% protein food that we buy in bulk from Cargill. It is also critical, especially with sailfin mollies, to keep ammonia and nitrite at zero. The shortfin mollies tolerate ammonia a bit better. Charles
Have you put out a request of your customers if someone has the strain can they give you some back? Of course you would pay for them but you would get them back.
I have not. I'll have Susie check previous retail sales to see if anyone has them. Most of our sales are wholesale to shops so we don't know who got the fish. Charles
Poaching Mollies. I love your stories about gorilla fish keeping 😂. Very interesting about the leaf litter causing infertility and in my opinion completely plausible. Also wild to hear that about the mesquite leaves! Could the ground water be contaminated with jettisoned cartel product?… I appreciate your videos. God speed
I'm sure the statute of limitations has expired on that expedition. I'm thinking of setting up some leaf tests with some fish next summer when it's warm enough to keep fish outside off system. Charles
These are beautiful fish! Looking forward to watching your progress in this line.
Thank you. We will post videos of our other strains and any progress toward restoral to their previous beauty.
Charles
I enjoy your videos explaining how you choose your breeders.
Thank you. Selecting breeders and seeing the results is my favorite part of the hobby.
Charles
Nicest molly I've ever seen!
Thank you. I hope to restore both the Gold Wags and Gold Freckles back to their previous beauty.
Charles
Mollie's were a lot of we older peoples first fish. I love mollie's. Thanks for the up date !
Thank you for watching our mollies. I really like mollies and we'll be doing more videos of them and the progress toward restoring our strains.
Charles
Those are awesome
Thank you. I can't wait to restore this line to its prior beauty.
Charles
Awesome. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for watching.
Charles
I think thats cool that the gold line of your Molly's all get there gold color from the one gold male years ago
@Justinclay-x3n It's fun to keep a line of fish going so long.
Charles
Fascinating as always. Thanks for the video .
Thank you for watching. We'll do more molly videos soon.
Charles
I love your Science moments. your just the best sir. 👍
Thank you. I'm a science geek so there'll be more of that in future videos.
Charles
I only kept Mollies once, many years ago. These are gorgeous! I am a fan of the Wag varieties 😊
I also like the wag color pattern especially on a gold bodied fish.
Charles

Susie (wife and business partner) says I'm bull headed stubborn. I like persistent better.
Charles
Outstanding Beauty!! 😅👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you.
Charles
I wish you all the luck because those things were gorgeous.
Thank you. With time we will restore the strain.

Very nice!!
Thank you. Wait until the strain is restored.

Hi Charles. Do you ever buy new breeder fish, to put into a existing breeder coloni?
We very rarely buy new breeders since quarantine is complicated in recirculating systems like our greenhouses. We quarantine for a long, long time (and test with some of our fish) in outside vats. That means we can only get new stock in the spring and fall when outside temperatures are neither too hot nor too cold.

@ thx for the answer. That makes good sense.
@@KentAJDK I'm here to answer questions.
Charles
Nice looking fish,
How do you keep your mollies nice and healthy some of mine seem to get sunken bellies
