    Dennis, your videos are a HUGE help cleaning my reels. Thank you !!
    A tip for you for the spring and click pin for the Shimano Tekota 500 reel that you hate.
    Find a really thin and small straight screw driver. Usually in eye glasses repair kits.
    That screw driver will fit inside the hole in the shaft where the spring sits.
    Screw the star drag onto the shaft enough to get the threads started.
    Place the spring and click pin into the hole in the shaft.
    Slide the screw driver into the hole, it will fit into the groove on the click pin.
    I use a small pair of needle nose pliers to compress the pin and spring.
    Hold the pin down with the screw driver. Finish screwing on the star drag and BAM.....Jeds a millionaire...that easy. Pull the screw driver out and finish up.
    It’s really easy. No stress.
    Hope this helps you.
    Thanks again for the great videos !

      Thanks John. Another alternative that I have been using lately is to use the last shim washer that goes under the star adjuster to wedge the assembly in place. When you tighten the star adjuster down, it pushes the washer off and sets the assembly correctly.

    Great video! I just got a Tekota 300...no line counter...just a regular 300. I'm somewhat familiar with the inner workings, since I've worked on my Tekota 600 before. Well, I just got this 300 today, and the spool is very stiff feeling. Out of gear, it will not spin freely...maybe 3/4 or 1 full revolution at best. In gear, it cranks very stiffly as a result. When the clicker is engaged, it just gets ridiculously stiff to crank. I tore the whole thing down, and cleaned, greased, and oiled everything. It's maybe 10% better...maybe. Still unacceptable for a fairly new reel. It's not brand new, but pretty close. The inside is immaculate. ...just too much grease. I "thought" I cleaned and oiled the spool bearings pretty well...as well as the worm gear/level wind, but it's still really stiff. Any ideas or tips? Thanks so much!

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      This almost sounds like the spool is out of true. That can happen when line gets trapped inside and the angler pulls on it to try and free the jam. The reel frame may also be out of square. These are possible causes, but may not be the issue. It could also be a bent pawl in the level wind.
      Here are a few things I would try:
      1) Remover the spool. Reassemble the reel without it. Do the gears turn free and easy? If not, the problem is most likely in the gears. I would check for small pieces of broken line that may be inhibiting the free movement. Sounds like you already did this with the cleaning, but may be worth a check.
      2) Remove the Pawl from the level wind guide, so that the line guide slides back and forth without effort. Spin the worm gear to make sure it turns easily. If it does not, remove the worm gear, reinstall the spool and see if the reel spins right. This is really a process of elimination. It is something in the moving parts or frame. Give these a try and let me know how it goes. In the end, you may need to replace the spool, but don't go to that expense until you are sure it is not another issue - Thanks for asking - Dennis

    Hi Dennis 😀 I have taken apart my tekota 800 several times today. Everything is working except the anti reverse. I hear it trying to engage but it doesn't lock up. Part number 303 on the schematic seem to free float and not stay attached to the gear. Thanks for the help! Joe

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joe - there should be two prongs at the end of the A/R dog part number 303. Those prongs get spread over the toothed ratchet gear under the main gear. One prong goes on the top side and the other on the bottom of that piece. If it still doesn't work, the prongs may be damaged or spread to far apart to get the right friction. If they are too far apart, you can find the ends with a pliers to help bring them close. They do not need to be bent to the point of touching each other, just enough to grip the ratchet. It sounds like your has both prongs riding under it as apposed to being spread on it. - Dennis

    Never understood this design either and it really is a pain. I own 2 of the Tekota 800’s now but used to own more of them in other sizes. They’re great reels I run wire on the 2 I have left and the spools are very resilient but that spring makes no sense.

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have found an alternative way to compress the spring that works as well or better than the toothpick. You load all but the last shim on the gear sleeve. Then put the "Rocket" spring in the hole and creep the last shim down until the spring compresses and is held in place. Once that is steady, tighten the stag adjuster and when the adjuster meets the shim, it moves it down and loads the spring! Try that next time you have the reel apart - Thanks for viewing - Dennis

    • @2ndChanceTackle

      Bill - I have since found a second way to reinstall the spring. Insert the spring in the hole and take the last gear sleeve washer and press it down until it holds the spring in as a wedge. Then use the drag adjuster knob. Screw it down. When it connects with and pushes down on the washer it will set the click spring!. I think you are right though. Either way, the design is frightful and sinister - Dennis

      That little rocket spring is problematic. I found you can also wedge the spring in with the last tension washer the goes on the stack before the star adjuster and that the spring will set once you tighten down the star. If you know that quirk, then the reel is a good product, and you noted and worth having if you do a lot of heat drop fishing.

    Very helpful video. I have two of these reels. Worked on both recently. One looked and works great. The other was not in good shape and is hard to reel. I’m thinking it is the bearings. The outer bearing looks ok but the roller clutch bearing looks bad. How do you remove the roller clutch bearing?

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The roller clutch bearing is pushed through the back of the side plate. You may want to hit this bearing with penetrating oil or WD40 a few times and see if it frees up the movement. Make sure you re-oil the bearing after the treatment and before you re-install.
      To push the bearing through, remove the other internal gear side parts and then sit the side plate on your work bench face side up. You can then reach inside the gear shaft hole and can tap it out with a flat blade screw driver or punch to loosen and remove it. If you have been spraying the penetrating oil, it should have enough slip to come out easily. Thanks for asking - Dennis

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  ปีที่แล้ว

      My guess is that you installed the roller clutch (AKA A/R instant anti-revers bearing) upside down. There are two A/R stops on this reel. One is the A/R pawl, that is a back up to the primary A/r which is the roller clutch. That is a one way clutch and when it is upside down, it is going to prevent you from going forward, while the pawl is going to prevent it from going backwards, so you will be stuck Try flipping the clutch and see if that restores your reel operation - Dennis

    The problem I am having is the front plate is not wanting to freely come off the reel.
    I have removed all relevant screws but the plate seems stuck down near the shaft, in the area where the two rivets (for lack of better term) are.

    • @2ndChanceTackle

      Have you removed the handle and drag assembly? You need to do that in order to remove the side plate. If you have already done that, then you may have some build up of stuff around the seal. A rental tap tap with a small rubber mallet / hammer usually can free it if that is the case. - Dennis

Reinsert the pawl and tighten the cap. It needs to completely seal. if it sticks and the line guide does not move, back off the cal a little, song the reel and retighten. • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try backing off the pawl and see if the problem with the handle operation is still there. If it works OK, you may have a bent tooth on the pawl. If that is the case, the pawl may need to be replaced. Also, check the tracks on the worm gear. If any are scared or appear rough, then the worm gear may be the culprit. When checking, note if the operation is tight at a certain area of the worm gear. If it consistently fails in that area, that is where to look for the problem. - Dennis

Use the last tension washer on the gear sleeve to wedge the spring into the hole and leave it there holding firm in the wedge position. Then install the drag adjuster.
